    • Senator: APC will liberate Abia in 2027

Former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu yesterday said that time is running out for the administration of Governor Alex Otti.

Kalu assured that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will liberate the state in 2027.

He wondered by Governor Alex Otti is fíxated on the Labour Party (LP), which he described as a sinking ship, at a time the wave of progressive politics is sweeping across the Southeast.

Kalu said Otti is waging war against the opposition instead of focusing on the development of the state.

He said: “I would like to advise Governor Otti to quit the confrontation and govern because time is running out. He should stop descending into petty name-calling. Abia deserves leaders who build, not those who burn bridges. The APC is coming, not as conquerors, but as liberators from mediocrity.”

Kalu, who represents Abia North District in the Senate, said in a statement by his media aide, Sunday Maduka, that the governor’s vitriolic outburst, diatribe, and invectives smacked of political desperation.

He condemned Otti’s intolerance of opposition, saying that it is gutter politics and an attempt to deflect from his inadequacies.

Kalu pointed out that the governor has been waging war at him because of his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC), support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid and commitment to bolstering APC’s presence in Abia State ahead of 2027.

He said: “This is not “war,” as Otti’s propagandists twist it, but a legitimate political expression in a democracy. Governor Otti, in his hubris-fuelled response, resorted to personal insults, diagnosing imaginary ‘challenges’ like ‘information deficiency syndrome’ and accusing me of disgraceful conduct.

“Such language is unbecoming of a governor, and sadly reveals a man who is insecure in his seat, and haunted by the ghosts of his own political fragility.”

Kalu said the governor’s attack is hypocritical, pointing out that a leader who rode into office on the LP’s coattails suddenly forgot that politics is about competition and not coronation.

Kalu accuses Otti of political desperation, sure of APC’s victory in 2027

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North) has accused Governor Alex Otti of what he described as a “vitriolic and desperate political attack.”

The senator accused Otti of descending into personal insults rather than focusing on governance, warning that such antics would not derail his commitment to strengthening the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement by Head of Media, Senator Kalu Media Office, Sunday Maduka,
Kalu said the Governor’s comments reflect insecurity and a fear of the APC’s rising influence in the state.

He described Otti’s attacks as a “shameful spectacle” and a diversion from the administration’s failures to deliver on promises to the people of Abia.

Kalu stated: “His diatribe, which is laced with invectives and drips with political desperation, against me for simply affirming my unwavering loyalty to APC, is nothing short of a shameful spectacle. This is not governance. It is gutter politics at its lowest. It is a frantic attempt by an administration to deflect from its own inadequacies.

“The exercise of my fundamental right as a loyal party man and patriot, and the expression of my commitment to bolstering APC’s presence in Abia State ahead of 2027, including supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election and ensuring a strong APC governorship candidate, is not a crime. In doing these, I am fulfilling my duty to my party and the people of Abia State.”

Kalu further urged Otti to focus on addressing pressing issues such as healthcare, youth unemployment, and security rather than engage in petty political confrontations.

He insisted that Abians are discerning voters who will judge leaders based on performance and not invective-laden propaganda, adding: “I remain undeterred in my commitment to the APC. This is not personal ambition but a dedication to Nigeria’s unity and prosperity.

“Otti’s negativity will only strengthen my resolve to mobilise every resource legally, ethically, and vigorously, to ensure APC’s triumph in 2027. If he chooses to stay in his sinking Labour Party ship, so be it; we will fight on the field of ideas, policies, and people power.”

I will deliver Abia to APC in 2027, says Kalu

The senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has promised to use his clout to deliver Abia State to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.

Kalu spoke at Ekoli in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State during his nnual New Year visit to the Ebonyi State APC Chairman, Chief Stanley Okoro-Emegha.

The former Abia State governor said he would deploy all his resources to ensure that the APC wrests power from the ruling Labour Party (LP) in Abia State.

“I will support President Bola Tinubu and the APC governorship candidate in the elections.

“I will put my heart on the field to ensure that the APC wins a landslide in Abia State, at the election.

“The incumbent governor, Dr. Alex Otti, is my friend but I am not discussing politics, only the total victory of the APC in the elections,” he said.

He urged governors to secure their states and not leave such a task to President Tinubu.

“When I was Abia governor, I ensured total security of lives and properties.

“There were no cases of kidnapping, among other crimes, in Abia. This was at a period when other states were grappling with heightened insecurity.

“The governors should emulate Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, who has ensured adequate peace and security in the state,” he said.

Kalu noted that he conceived his annual New Year visit to the Ebonyi APC chairman due to his long-standing loyalty to him.

“He is an embodiment of loyalty and is someone you can trust with your life.

“I raised him as a child, even when his father was alive, and he was part of the success stories I recorded as a governor.

“When I handed him over to former Ebonyi State governor, Senator David Umahi, I urged him to give his principal 100 per cent loyalty and he has transferred such virtue to the incumbent governor, Nwifuru,” he said.

Tinubu battling political sabotage, not security failure — Kalu alleges

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has blamed Nigeria’s worsening insecurity on what he described as “political sabotage” targeted at undermining President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Sunday, the former Abia State governor dismissed claims that the President is overwhelmed by the security crisis, insisting that powerful interests are deliberately sponsoring violence to discredit the administration.

Kalu said, “This insecurity is politically instigated. People are sponsoring attacks because they want Tinubu to fail. They did the same to former President Jonathan. It is all about 2027.”

Kalu maintained that Tinubu is fully engaged with security agencies and receives intelligence reports unavailable to lawmakers.

“The President is working day and night. Leadership is not a bed of roses,” he said, citing the suspension of the President’s scheduled engagements on Sunday as evidence of his hands-on approach.

The Senator expressed confidence that recently abducted schoolchildren would be rescued, assuring that “service chiefs have gone fully on duty” and that security agencies are tracking down the perpetrators.

Kalu argued that tackling insecurity cannot rest solely on the Federal Government, insisting that many state governments have failed to deploy the powers already available to them.

He recalled his own experience in Abia State, saying he established the Bakassi Vigilante outfit which, according to him, “drove criminals away” and restored safety in Aba.

“If most of these states want to declare a state of emergency and send me there for six months, I will keep it peaceful. I know what to do,” he said.

Pressed to name those allegedly sponsoring insecurity, Kalu declined.

“I can’t mention names. The intelligence community is on it. If they feel it’s necessary to identify them, they will,” he said.

On calls for state police, the Senator reminded Nigerians that constitutional amendments require the concurrence of two-thirds of state assemblies.

“In the 9th Senate, we tried but the states did not approve it. You can’t blame the National Assembly,” he said.

Kalu also addressed the conviction and sentencing of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, saying while the separatist leader must answer for alleged incitement that led to deaths and destruction, the matter ultimately requires a political resolution.

“Kanu incited people and people died. But emotions will not solve this. The Igbo nation should move from confrontation to negotiation,” he said.

He disclosed ongoing engagements with federal authorities to explore a non-judicial resolution, adding that he had previously pushed for Kanu’s bail in 2017 during the Buhari administration.

Kalu condemned attacks on Justice James Omotosho, saying aggrieved parties should follow the appellate process.

“Justice Omotosho is just a messenger of the court. If you are not satisfied, you appeal. Insulting a judge is unacceptable,” he warned.

He confirmed that Kanu’s legal team has already filed an appeal and said his own intervention would remain strictly political.

Kalu disclosed that the National Assembly is holding continuous consultations on the security situation.

“I just left the Senate President’s office. We are working, even on Sundays. We will hand our resolutions to the security agencies,” he said.

Abia North 2027: APC chieftain tells ex-Deputy Gov to drop ambition, back Senator Kalu

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Edward Kalu Okocha, has commended the immediate past Deputy Governor Hon Ude Oko Chukwu, on his recent defection to the ruling Labour Party (LP) but urged him not to seek the Abia North Senatorial seat in 2027.

In a statement on Sunday in Ameke Abiriba, Okocha described Oko Chukwu’s defection as a bold and strategic step, noting that his decision to join Governor Alex Otti’s Labour Party underscores his commitment to the progress of Abia State and Abia North Senatorial Zone in particular.

He, however, cautioned the former Deputy Governor against allowing the excitement of his new political chapter to push him into contesting the Senate seat, stressing that Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has already positioned Abia North favourably through quality representation and seniority in the National Assembly.

“Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has been doing an outstanding job in the Senate, bringing meaningful projects and empowerment to our zone. His legislative experience and seniority make him a strong contender for principal positions, including the Senate Presidency, which would be a game-changer for our people,” Okocha stated.

The APC chieftain drew from political history, recalling how he supported Oko Chukwu’s third-term bid in the Abia State House of Assembly in 2010, despite opposition from some quarters.

According to him, that strategic decision later paid off as Oko Chukwu went on to facilitate key projects such as the skill acquisition centre in Abiriba and eventually rose to the position of Deputy Governor.

“This same strategic thinking is needed today. As we look towards 2027, Abia North stands to benefit more by rallying round Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for re-election, thereby positioning him for greater responsibilities in the Senate. That is the path to unlocking more development and opportunities for our people,” Okocha added.

While congratulating Oko Chukwu once again, Okocha appealed to him to prioritise the collective progress of Abia North Senatorial Zone by supporting Senator Kalu’s re-election bid in 2027.

COSEYL backs Kalu’s re-election to Senate

The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), the apex sociopolitical youth movement in South East geopolitical zone, has thrown its full weight behind the 2027 senatorial ambition of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, describing him as the “people’s choice” whose third-term bid is founded on unmatched performance and grassroots development.

At a briefing , the group endorsed Senator Kalu’s return to the Red Chamber, stating that the people of Abia North have “unequivocally” made their position known, with wide-scale support for the former governor’s legislative comeback.

COSEYL, in a statement jointly signed by the President General, COSEYL, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, and Comrade Okey Nwaoru, Publicity Secretary, COSEYL, said the endorsement is not a mere political routine but a reflection of a senator whose track record in public office has made visible impacts in rural communities, towns, and cities within Abia North.

“The good people of Abia North Senatorial District have spoken clearly and boldly. They have endorsed Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for a third term in the Senate because of his consistent delivery of democratic dividends,” Comrade Goodluck Ibem declared.

The group noted that Kalu has redefined legislative representation through his direct interface with the grassroots, economic empowerment programs, road constructions, and interventions across critical sectors like education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

COSEYL left no loopholes in slamming individuals who tagged themselves as “Ohafia Stakeholders,” who recently issued a communiqué denouncing Senator Kalu’s third-term bid, describing them as “disgruntled elements” pursuing selfish political agendas.

“We are compelled to respond to the ill-advised and self-serving communiqué issued by a group parading themselves as ‘Ohafia Stakeholders.’ Let it be on record that these individuals do not speak for the collective will of the Ohafia people. Their views are not only unpopular but misleading and should be disregarded entirely,” the group said.

The youth coalition further warned against allowing divisive politics to derail the progress Abia North has witnessed under Kalu’s watch. It urged the people of the zone, particularly Ohafia, to remain united and not fall prey to opportunists who have no grassroots support or electoral credibility.

“Their communiqué does not represent the true voice of Ohafia. These people are known for political mischief and have no electoral relevance in their wards, let alone in Ohafia as a whole. The real stakeholders—the market women, traditional rulers, youth groups, artisans, and community leaders—are solidly behind Senator Kalu,” Comrade Ibem emphasized.

The group recalled Senator Kalu’s track record from Government House to the Nation’s apex Red Chamber, saying:

“Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is a former governor of Abia State and current Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission.

Senate Committee Chairman on Southeast Development Commission (SEDC) Orji Uzor Kalu has rejected call by Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF) to run for president in 2027.

Kalu, in a statement yesterday by his media office, said he would not participate in the race since he had “publicly endorsed President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for re-election”.

NYLF had urged Kalu to run with either the Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, or the Governor of Adamawa State, Umar Fintiri, as running mate.

The forum, made up of 40 Northern groups, made the call after a visit on former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

NYLF, which named Obasanjo as its patron, added that Labour Party(LP) presidential candidate for the 2023 general election  Peter Obi was also its preferred presidential candidate.

But Kalu, in a statement by George Maduka, said President Tinubu needed all encouragement on his ongoing economic reforms.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC) and representative of Abia North Senatorial District, has rejected calls by the Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF) to contest the 2027 presidential election.

The Northern coalition, consisting of 40 youth groups, had urged Kalu to run for president with either Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal or Adamawa State Governor Umar Fintiri as his running mate.

The appeal was made after a courtesy visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where Obasanjo was named the group’s patron.

During the visit, NYLF President Comrade Eliot Afiyo listed Kalu and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as the coalition’s preferred contenders for the 2027 race, while suggesting Governors Lawal and Fintiri as potential vice-presidential candidates.

However, in a statement signed by his media aide, George Maduka, Kalu distanced himself from any presidential ambition, reiterating that his position on the 2027 election remains unchanged.

UPDATED: Alleged N7.1bn Fraud: Kalu fails to stop FG’s appeal against his acquittal

A former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu failed on Friday in a bid to stop the federal government from appealling the September 29, 2021 judgment by Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja stopping his prosecution on a N7.1billion money laundering charge.

In two rulings on Friday, a three-member panel of the appellate court rejected the objection by Kalu and his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited to the application for leave to appeal out of time filed by the Fed Govt through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Kalu and Slok had argued, among others that the Court of Appeal, having delivered a judgment on March 6, 2024 striking out an earlier appeal by the Fed Govt, the court had become functus officio and could not longer take any further steps on the case.

Justice Ishaq Sanni, who read the rulings on Friday, noted that the March 6, 2024 judgment did not determine the substance of the appeal and thus, was not a judgment given on the merit.

Justice Sanni held that the Court of Appeal, in the March 6, 2024 judgment only struck out the appeal on the grounds that the record of appeal was not properly certified, because the official of the Federal High Court, who certified the record did not include his or her designation.

He held that since the March 6 , 2024 judgment was delivered after the three months allowed an aggrieved party to appeal, the Fed Govt was in order to have filed its application for extension of time to appeal.

Justice Sanni proceeded to issue an order extending the time within which the Fed Govt should file a notice of appeal against the September 29 judgment of the Federal High Court.

He also ordered the Fed Govt to file its notice of within 14 days.

The rulings were on the applications marked: CA/ABJ/PRE/ROA/CV/430MI/2024 (FRN v. Orji Uzo Kalu and two others) and CA/ABJ/PRE/ROA/CV/431MI/2024 )FRN v. Slok Nigeria Limited and two others.

By the Friday’s ruling, the Fed Govt is expected to file fresh notice of appeal to challenge the September 29, 2021 judgment by Justice Ekwo, prohibiting the Fed Govt from further prosecuting Kalu and Slok following an earlier judgment of the Supreme Court voiding the proceedings leading to their earlier trial and conviction.

Kalu was charged and tried with Slok and a former Account Director in Abia State Government House, Ude Jones Udeogu, for their alleged complicity in diverting the N7.1b from Abia State’s coffers.

The three were convicted and, while Kalu and Udeogu were sentenced to 12 and 10 years imprisonment, Slok was wound up.

But, upon an appeal by Udeogu, the Supreme Court, in a judgment on May 8, 2020, set aside their trial and conviction on the grounds the trial judge, who was elevated to the Court of Appeal, ought not to have continued to hear the case.

In the judgment given in an appeal, marked: SC/62C/2019 filed by Udeogu, the Supreme Court ordered a retrial in the case.

Although Kalu and Slok were not appellants in the appeal by Udeogu, they (Kalu and Slok) later tendered the judgment before a Federal High Court in Lagos and the court applied the judgment to them and set them free.

But, when the prosecuting agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) applied for a retrial, Kalu and Slok sued to challenge the move to retry them.

They argued among others, that a retrial would subject them to double jeopardy, having earlier been tried and convicted on the same charge, an argument Justice Ekwo upheld in his September 29, 2021 judgment.
