    Orji: I’m not leaving PDP

Senator Theodore Orji (Abia Central), has debunked insinuations that he planned to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying “I have no intention of jettisoning my relationship with the party, not now, not tomorrow. I love my party”.
Orji stressed that those jittery with the rumour, including former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Stanley Ohajuruka, who claimed he (Orji) would not be welcomed to the All Progressives Congress (APC), were mere rabble rousers.
He said Ohajuruka was only trying to draw attention to himself and “draw me out so that I may join issues with him and his like, but I will not give them that privilege”.
Ohajuruka went on social media to say APC would not welcome the former governor into its fold.
Orji said: “Let me tell you, if I decide to leave my party, the party I will join will be very happy because of my antecedent.
“I have a track record of success as a civil servant, and in politics, I have electoral value, unlike those who are spent forces in all ramifications of their lives. So don’t mind them, they just want me to notice them”.
Orji insisted that majority of those from the Southeast, leaving or have left the PDP, were doing so for personal reasons. He noted that Nigerians can serve Nigeria irrespective of political inclination.
“Those who are leaving the party, citing party problems as a reason, are not sincere, which is most uncharitable, especially when majority of them have benefitted hugely from it”.

  • Ex- Gombe military governor Orji joins APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State at the weekend lost one of its top shots, Group Captain Joe Orji (rtd), to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Orji, who was Gombe State military governor, was registered at Ward 3, Nenwe, Aninri Local Government by APC’s National Vice Chairman, South East, Emma Eneukwu and the state chairman, Ben Nwoye.

Orji said he dumped the PDP because of injustice and impunity in the party.

He expressed confidence in the Federal Government’s ability to tackle the  economic and political challenges confronting Nigeria.

The former PDP man said his decision was taken after he critically studied the programme and policies of the ruling party.

Eneukwu described Orji as a “political caterpillar”, who will join forces with other progressives and democrats to wrestle power from PDP in 2019.

Nwoye saluted his courage for identifying with the party of progressives.

  • Orji kicks off constituency projects in Abia

The senator representing Abia Central senatorial district at the National Assembly, Senator Theodore Orji, has commenced work on several of his constituency projects designed to address various infrastructural challenges affecting his constituents.

The constituencies projects are part of his campaign promises made to his constituents that if elected to reprint them at the National Assembly that he will do all in his powers to lift the living standard of his people.

According to a statement by his Media Adviser, Don Norman Obinna the constituency projects are spread evenly within the six Local Governments that make-up Abia Central Senatorial District – Isiala Ngwa North/South, Umuahia North/South, Osisioma and Ikwuano.

Orji berates Ohajurka over comment on projects

Former Abia State governor and senator representing Abia Central, Theodore Orji, has urged former Speaker Stanley Ohajuruka to leave politics for acting.

The senator said the former Speaker would be better in Nollywood than in politics because of what he called his comical disposition to issues.

Orji was responding to Ohajuruka’s alleged statement that the former governor was taking credit for the rehabilitation of Ikot Ekpene-Umuahia highway, a Federal road, when it was being repaired by Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The former governor, in company of the member representing Ikwuano-Umuahia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Sam Onuigbo, went to the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), to plead for the rehabilitation of the road.

The Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has begun work on the road.

Orji told Ohajuruka that since he was good at acting, he should take a course in comedy under popular comdians.

A statement by his Media Adviser, Don Norman Obinna, said Ohajuruka’s media attack on Orji was a comic affair which should not be taken serious by right-thinking persons.

The statement reads: “Former governor of Abia State, Senator Theodore Orji, has waved aside the Abia ex-Speaker Stanley Ohajuruka’s media attacks on him, saying they are comic jokes from a social misfit meant to amuse like minds.

“I advise that rather than waste energy and time in politics, Ohajuruka should pursue a career in comedy as his utterances suggest that he will do extremely well in that field.

“It is comical that Ohajuruka hid under politics to speak about the constituency he stagnated for four years at the National Assembly, as its representative, with his uneventful representation that attracted no project or single bill.

“The Umuahia/Ikot-Ekpene Federal highway was in deplorable state when Ohajuruka was Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency representative. Why was he unable to attract the attention of the Federal Government to it throughout his abysmal four years at the National Assembly?

“It is a shame and failure on his part that what he could not achieve in his dull four years at the National Assembly I accomplished in my 20 months at the Red Chambers”.

“It is even more comical that despite serving as lawmaker both in state and federal levels, Ohajuruka still finds it difficult to place a clear distinction between the executive oversights and that of a legislator.

“Ohajuruka’s statement that I ‘should stop taking credit for President Muhammadu Buhari’s project’ in reference to the ongoing maintenance/repair of some failed sections of the Umuahia/Ikot-Ekpene federal highway has given him insight on the extent of damage solitariness can cause in a life of an individual.

“Let me refer Ohajuruka to the statement made by Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) representative, Mr. Abraham Akange who represented the FG at the flag-off ceremony of the road.

“Let me repeat what Akange, Government’s decision to fix the highway was due to the pressure from the National Assembly members from Abia State, especially Sen. Orji and Sam  Onuigbo.

“Their pressure on FERMA and the Federal Ministry of Works for the rehabilitation of the road was so tense that an emergency meeting had to be convened by the minister, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, in Abuja where the plan for the palliative work was unveiled and ratified.

Orji denies getting pension from Abia govt

Former Abia State Governor Theodore Orji has denied receiving pension from the state.

In a statement by his Media Adviser, Eddie Onuzutike, the former governor said the report was false.

Orji said his name was included among past governors and deputies to get pensions.

The statement reads: “Let it be known to all and sundry that T. A. Orji is not drawing any such funds from Abia State, knowing the implications of such act.

“As a man who went through the rungs of the civil service ladder – from Administrative Officer to Permanent Secretary – he is aware of the code guiding retirement of officers and so would not violate same.

“It is an avowed code and the journalistic maxim that when in doubt, one should not publish. This is still applicable and should be judiciously adhered to. Reporters and media houses should investigate properly before publishing.

“In the case above, the medium is hereby advised to apologise for the huge embarrassment from the error and desist from such publications to avoid unnecessary legal actions applicable to such misleading information.”

Orji is senator in exile, says Abia ex-Speaker

A former Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Stanley Ohajuruka, has said former governor and senator representing Abia Central, Theodore Orji, has not given his constituents effective representation.

The former lawmaker described Orji as a senator in exile.

Addressing reporters in Umuahia, the state capital, Ohajuruka said Abia Central was unfortunate to have voted for Orji.

The former speaker accused the former governor of not doing anything to impact on the lives of his people since he got to the Senate.

He said: “Look at the kind of senator we have here in Orji. Can we say we are having an effective representation in the Senate? We don’t have effective representation in the Senate. I stand to be corrected.”

Ohajuruka, who was also a member of the House of Representatives, recalled that he attracted 63 projects to Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency when he was in the House.

The former lawmaker said it was unfortunate that Orji had not attracted a single project to his senatorial zone since he went to the Senate.

He said: “How many projects can the present senator (Orji) tell us he has attracted to the people of Abia Central? Has he ever invited anyone from the area for a senatorial meeting? Where is the senatorial office? Does he have any? If you can find any, you tell us.”

    NUJ honours lawmaker, Orji

The Abia State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents chapel has held its press week, honouring the immdeiate past governor of the state Theodore Orji and two other leaders in the state.

The two other honorees were Hon Uko Ndukwe Nkole, a member of House of Representatives for Arochukwu/Ohafia federal constituency and Chris Odinaka Igwe, a community developer and businessman.

The Press Week had the theme: ‘The Imperatives of Equity and Fairness: A Case Study of Abia State’.

Orji, now a senator representing Abia Central, was honoured for his role in the election of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, a development viewed as historical because no one from Abia South had governed the state.

Hon Nkole was honoured for his various community development activities which he started long before his people wooed him into active politics and so voted him in 2015 into the federal house which he has never relented since going into the federal House of Representatives, while Igwe was specially selected for among others, partnering the state government in constructing a community road for which he, according to the state governor Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, paid  40% of the cost and establishing a cashew processing plant at his community.

The keynote address was delivered by the Speaker of the state House of Assembly Rt Hon Martins Azubuike with the topic derived from the theme of the Press Week, saying that equity is derived from a concept of social justice and represents a belief the people.

Azubuike said that there are some things which people should have, that there are basic needs that should be fulfilled, that burdens and rewards should not be spread too divergently across the community and that policies should be directed with impartiality, fairness and justice towards these ends.

The Abia Speaker said, “Equity is the quality of being fair, unbiased and just and involves ensuring that everyone has access to the resources, opportunities, power and responsibility they need to reach their full, healthy potentials as well as making changes so that unfair differences may be understood and addressed”.

“Equity as a concept is also fundamental to sustainable development and well entrenched in international law and universal declaration of human rights”.

The occasion which was chaired by the State Works Commissioner a journalist and immediate past member of the House of Representatives Hon Eziuche Ubani said that Abia state has not gotten to where it ought to be in the community of states in the area of development despite that it has the right people piloting its affairs.

In a speech, the National Vice President for the Southeast Zone Comrade Chris Isiguzo, said, “The Southeast zone of the country has been landlocked and additionally heightened by the menace of herdsmen”.

“There are no [passable] roads now from Onitsha to Enugu, Enugu to Port Harcourt, Umuahia to Ikot Ekpene, Enugu to Abakaliki, Owerri to PH, Owerri to Okigwe, Aba to Ikot Ekpene.”

Isiguzo called on the federal government to quickly declare a state of emergency on the Southeast roads and urged the governors from the zone to find a solution to infrastructural decay in the region.

  • Abia: Why PDP will never support Ogah -Orji

Abia: Why PDP will never support Ogah -Orji

In this interview, Samson Orji, a former commissioner and leader of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, explains to Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu, why PDP and some other leaders in the state are against Uche Ogah’s moves to claim Abia governorship seat.  Excerpts

You have been a major player in Abia State politics. What we are witnessing now in the state politics is giving everyone concern. Given your deep experience both as a lawmaker and in the executive aim of the of the state government, right from the days of former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu and the immediate past Governor Theodore Ahamefule Orji, when you served as commissioner for commence and industries, what would you say is the problem? What is happening in Abia?

The problem, I think, is that somebody wants to become popular even though for a wrong reason. Somebody wants to be known for the wrong reasons. This is because it is unimaginable how somebody will attempt to be an elected governor without first contesting in an election. I suppose what you are asking is about the young man, Uche Ogah, who is laying claims to the governorship seat of Abia State, who wants to hijack the governorship seat through the back door, isn’t it?

What I am saying is that there is argument over who is the governorship candidate of PDP, because it seems settled that PDP won the election. Now after winning the election, three people are laying separate claims to be the right candidate. Why do we have to have this problem in Abia State?

Yes, just as I said earlier, the problem is that Uche Ogah wanted to be popular and has in fact achieved that aim of being popular, but we all know it is for the wrong reasons. In years to come, decades to come, people are going to point to him, refer to him sarcastically as the guy who made desperate attempt and failed because he is never going to succeed.

Now, let me say this clearly that you cannot become a governor when you never contested in a governorship election. People have put up their opinions concerning what is happening in Abia State but the truth remains that the political party, PDP, conducted its primaries and followed the processes and this young man participated in the primaries and he lost out. So, when he lost out, what we expected him to do was to join hands with whoever that emerged the candidate of the party, in this case, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, and help to build the party, go for the election and wait until it comes to us.

Until it comes to us! How do you  mean until it comes to us? Who are these us?

The Abia North! I am from Abia North like Uche Ogah and that’s why I am qualified to speak to you on this issue. There are moral issues here and there are legal issues. There are issues that bother on equity and there are political issues! None of these balances to the favour of Ogah. None! If you come to the equity part of it, we have what is called Abia Charter of Equity. If you go through the charter, the following fathers of the state agreed that power will rotate between the Old Bende Division and the old Abia Division. Old Bende Division is now made up of Abia North Senatorial Zone and half of Abia Central, while Old Aba Division is now made up of Abia South and half of Abia Central. We stated it with Ogbonnaya Onu from Old Bende before the creation of Ebonyi State. Then, Orji Uzor Kalu from Igbere, also in Old Bende, ruled for eight years. After him, Theodore Orji, from Abia Central, the part that is also from Old Bende, took over and ruled for another eight years. That is 16 straight years after Onu. Equity therefore demands that Old Aba Division, made up of the Ngwa Clan and the Ukwa people should be allowed to govern. But Ogah did not want to wait; instead of waiting, he decided that he has a faster method; he decided to overrule the decision of the majority of the founding fathers of Abia State as reflected in the Charter that power should rotate.

But there was even a bigger opponent than Uche Ogah. That was Alex Otti, who the whole big shots in Nigeria knew. They gave him money, gave him everything to emerge but because of this same factor; that it was not the turn of Abia North: Alex Otti is from my local government, even though he claims to come from a local government in the south, but this very local government is still in the central, and God knows that the cries of some of us, I call it the real men of Abia North, when issues of this nature come up, it is time to separate the real men from the boys. The boys are people like Uche Ogah, who have not attained political puberty; because if he had, he would have seen the wisdom in allowing the south, made up of Ukwa Ngwa, to take a shot; he would have seen the need to support them. When Ikpeazu finishes his tenure, when it rotates back, anybody from Abia North can now vie. Uche is still a young man. He is probably 10 years younger than me.

You must have equity on your side first. We are not yet as civilized as America where one family can continue to govern. The reason for zoning, you have seen at the centre. Amongst all, it helps to develop all the areas and gives all a sense of belonging.

The argument Ogah is making is that he is second in the PDP primaries and that if PDP’s candidate is having issues, just like what happened in Kogi State, instead of power leaving PDP, let the aspirant that came second in the primaries take it. Now, Ogah is still a PDP member, why are you people, PDP leaders, so much against him?

The Kogi you just made reference to is different. Why?  The man died. He didn’t need an appeal on any matter. Abubakar died after the election. Now, Uche Ogah went to court, trying to exploit the provisions of the Electoral Act, where it said one can go to court in a pre-election matter; that is considering that the tax issue was a pre-election matter because the jurisdiction was not rested on the tribunal; it was rested on the ordinary court and they gave him judgment. Now, let us assume the judgment was given in a fair manner; the question is, assuming the judgment was to execute Okezie Ikpeazu, so the next day, will you execute him? What happens to the 21 days allowed by law to seek redress if you think that this court presided over by one man did not hear you fairly? Appeal cases are usually heard by three persons, four persons or more. Even if Okezie  Ikpeazu was not a governor, the law allows him to file an appeal against the judgment to say it was not heard properly, or I do not agree with the judgment. They said no. This is the aspect where even people who are not lawyers are saying, no, there must be something else. Why won’t they allow a man, who is a governor, to exercise his right of appeal? After the appeal court, he still has the right to go to the Supreme Court. Why is Ogah so much in haste? Is it not because what he hatched was a civilian coup?

By giving an order to swear him in immediately, the judge gave what they call consequential order, which he has no powers to give, since his is not an election petition tribunal. He could have said something like this: the tax is faulty; you were not qualified to contest for that election. INEC is therefore advised to do this or that, or INEC should be advised to conduct another election. As a judge, he should know the law, the amendment of the law; he should know that the Supreme Court has changed the precedent set by the Amaechi’s case when it ruled that when a party fields a candidate, the party is only a vehicle, a platform; that the people voted for the candidate they saw sitting on the platform; that the people were more interested in who sat on the platform; so, knowing about that latest supreme court judgment, I will not just reject that Abuja judgment, I will also resist Uche Ogah from being sworn in. It’s just like me seeing a man killing a fellow citizen by the roadside and moving in to save him, though I am not a law reinforcement agent. That is why people are against Uche Ogah per se.

So you expect the Appeal Court to change the judgment in favour of Ikpeazu?

Yes! The Appeal Court will change the ruling for so many reasons. Let me tell you one. Many people discussing this matter assumed that the judgment was right. But that judgment was not right at all. How? How can you convict me on forgery when the maker of the document, especially when the maker of the document comes to testify that he is the maker of the document?

But Ogah’s allegation was false information in his tax clearance form, not presentation of forged tax document?

The fact is that they are accusing him of providing false information on oath. This is perjury and the position of the law is that in a case of perjury, the standard of proof must be that of criminal case and that is proof beyond all reasonable doubt. In other words, it must be treated as if he had accused him of forgery. This was not done in Abuja, unlike the same case in Owerri where the court told Nwosu to prove his case. Because I know the Court of Appeal will be diligent, I know it will rule against the Abuja Federal High Court’s ruling.

Now, what if the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court uphold the ruling of the Abuja High Court? If these happen, how will it impact on the politics of Abia?

The two superior courts can’t uphold that ruling. So, I don’t even want to imagine how such development will impact on Abia but I know it would be too catastrophic. However, think it is impossible.

The worst case scenario is if the Supreme Court says, you are not qualified to have been elected in the first place, what they will do, because we are under rule of law, is to go to the spirit behind the letters and ask INEC to conduct a fresh election in Abia State. That is the worst case scenario. They can’t say Uche Ogah go and take the seat. It is the law that guides the judgment of courts.

Some say Okezie Ikpeazu is not fully supported by top leaders in Abia South because they feel he was the choice of former Governor T.A. Orji and not the true choice of Ukwa Ngwa stakeholders?

Senator Theodore was brought by Dr. Orji Uzor. Everybody, including me, was against Theodore for being brought by Orji Uzor. But when the chips were down, we decided to give him a chance; let’s see who he is. This vehicle has been used. God will always use human instrumentality. Now, if you don’t like Ikpeaza, not because of his person, but because of who brought him, it is important to realize that there is nowhere he would have emerged without that support. It is happening everywhere including the United States of America. Ikpeazu is their son. They have to support him.

  • Ikpeazu, Orji task children on education, commitment

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has challenged children to study hard and equip themselves and prepare properly to take hold of the future as leaders of the next generation.

The Abia governor in his message to children advised Abia children to shun all forms of vices and negative influences and focus their energy towards becoming great ambassadors of the state and illustrious sons and daughters of their community.

Ikpeazu warned that parents and the educational institutions that mentor children will be failing in their responsibility if they do not focus attention on developing children that will have the capacity to right the wrongs of the past and change the world.

In a related development, the immediate past governor of Abia State, Senator Theodore Ahamefule Orji, has reaffirmed his commitment towards the wellbeing of the Nigerian children and also pledged to continue to invest in their future.

Orji’s pledge was contained in a press statement to mark this year’s Children’s Day celebration, signed by his Media Adviser, Mr. Don Norman Obinna, and made available to newsmen in Umuahia.

Orji who is the senator representing Abia Central said, “As future leaders whose shoulders lay the greatness of our country Nigeria, we shall not relent but strive to initiate actions that will benefit and promote children’s welfare, mutual exchange and understanding and the way we can achieve these is by exposing the children to modern education.

A nation reproduces its species by investing in the future of her children through education and the only way I know that a child can become a human being is through socialization and socialization in this contemporary age is done through the exposure of the child to the modern educational system.”

He maintained that education is the pivot with which development activities revolve and enjoined parents not to encourage hawking among their underage children but to endeavor to send them to school as that remains the best legacy they will give to them.

He urged both federal and state governments to ensure the proper implementation of the 6-3-3-4 educational system which provides students in senior secondary class opportunity for vocational studies.

Orji said by ensuring the full implementation of the system, it will help to reduce the alarming rate of unemployment in Nigeria as students will graduate to become employers of labour rather than remain unemployed after graduation.

The former Abia governor said his concern for the future leaders of the country made him to introduce a scholarship scheme that will produce 240 graduates as well as empowerment programmes.

He added that the programme has seen the donation of various vocational items to thousands of young people and school leavers in his constituency, Abia Central Senatorial District, in his 365 days in the Red Chambers of the National Assembly.

  • Orji gives farming a push

    Orji gives farming a push

Former Abia State Governor Theodore Orji has provided farming inputs for growers in his constituency.

Orji, who now represents Abia Central District at the Senate, gave out fertiliser-spraying tools to farmers as he concluded the first phase of his constituency outreach.

Speaking at the ceremony in Umuahia, he said he was simply demonstrating why his people sent him to the Senate, adding that he hoped beneficiaries would make judicious use of the equipment.

He said, “This item is fertiliser-spraying equipment which is used to spray the farm with liquid fertiliser instead of the normal hand application of fertiliser.”

The senator told the farmers to try the implement out on their farms to see if they work well, in which case, they should request for more.

Orji said, “Those who will get any of the several empowerment items should use them judiciously, while those who may not get should wait for another outreach.

“This programme is a continuous exercise, as there will be more empowerment programmes from me,” Senator Orji said.

He noted that he is at the senate for their own good and that whenever anything comes out from the National Assembly which is meant for them, he will be there to get their own for them without any delay.

The senator explained the essence of the programme, for which he set up a committee.

He said, “I charged [the committee members] to go to the rural areas to get those who are really in need of the items and will make use of them and not those who will get them and turn around the next day to  sell them.”

Earlier in his speech the chairman of the ceremony, Chief Uzodinma Okpara said that they are not surprised that their senator is empowering the people of his constituency, as he had done the same while he was the governor of the state.

Okpara, the son of the late Premier of the defunct Eastern Nigeria recalled that while Orji was the governor he brought security, peace and political stability to the state, “which were the several reasons we decided to send him to the Senate”.

He charged those who will benefit from the empowerment programme to make good use of the items to enable them to be self dependent and also help them to ensure that their families are well fed.

In their various speeches Chief Allen Nwachukwu who spoke for Isiala Ngwa North and South and Osisioma council areas said that within the few months Orji has been at the senate, “He is doing this, then when he stays four years and more there will be a tremendous change in our  areas”.

Col Austin Akobundu (rtd), who spoke for Umuahia North and South and Ikwuano council areas, described Orji as a senator very dear to their hearts and assured his people that more good things are still on the way with Orji as their senator.

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu described Orji as the pillar of democracy and equity in the state, stressing that his political ingenuity led to his emergence as the governor of the state.

Ikpeazu who was represented by Chief Henry Ikoh, Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, said Orji’s empowerment programme is not a surprise to him.

“It is part of dividends of democracy and I urge the beneficiaries to make good use of the items,” he said.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Samuel Enyeribe thanked the senator for the gesture of which the physically challenged also benefitted.

Some of the items given out to the people included two buses, 15  wheelchairs, 15 motorcycles, 21  sewing machines, 100 fertiliser spraying machines, eight tricycles, 21 grinding machines and 20 power generating sets.
