  • World Orphans’ Day: Yayi, Bamidele donate N24m

World Orphans’ Day: Yayi, Bamidele donate N24m

As the world celebrates World Orphans’ Day today (November 13), two senators – Chairman of Senate Committee on Appropriations, Solomon Adeola, popularly called Yayi (APC, Ogun West) and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele – have donated N24 million to 13 orphanage homes in Abuja and Nassarawa State for their upkeep.

Senator Adeola’s wife, Mrs. Temitope Adeola, made the donation through her non-government organization (NG), CHADASH, dedicated to widows and orphans.

The two All Progressives Party (APC) senators donated N12 million each to the orphanages.

Bamidele made an additional donation of N5 million to CHADASH and other senators made various pledges to the NGO.

The benefiting orphanages include Gifted and Talented Orphanage, Facado Orphanage, Cherry Field Orphanage, Christ Bethel Orphanage, Dynasty Orphanage, and JKS Orphanage.

Others are: Shining Star Orphanage, Queen Esther Orphanage, Maratha Care Children Home, Osaze Orphanage, Desired Orphanage, Purity Rose Orphanage and Gifted and Talented Home in Nasarawa State.

Adeola, who described himself as an orphan, having lost both parents, said there are many challenges and difficulties confronting orphans in the society.

The Ogun west senator noted that like himself, orphans usually do not have biological parents to stand up for them when it matters.

“I want to encourage all of us to be our brother’s keeper in assisting orphans to properly fit into the society. I recall that even in the political field, I suffered discrimination as an orphan as some disputed my state of origin for political vindictiveness. My parents were not there to assert my indigeneship of Ogun State.

“I am sure the children before us are all Nigerians with various needs. Nothing must stop us from making them useful and productive members of the society,” he said.

Expressing doubt about the official estimated figure of 17 million orphans in Nigeria, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations said the number would be in the region of 50 million nationwide.

A statement by his Media Adviser, Chief Kayode Odunaro, said Senator Adeola promised to always participate in any effort – whether at government or private level – to address the challenges that orphans face in the society.

Speaking as the guest of honour of the event, which started with a keep fit and awareness kilometre walk around Maitama, Abuja, Bamidele noted that with the number of orphans in Nigeria outnumbering the population of many countries in Africa and elsewhere, there should be proper government policies to address the needs of the orphans, besides private efforts by humanitarian and charitable individuals and organisations.

He hailed Senator Adeola and his wife for always giving back to the society in various ways.

The Senate Leader described Senator Adeola as a giver, even among his colleagues in the National Assembly, being the “go to” man when anyone is in need.

In her welcome address at the event, tagged: “Caring for the Uncared For,” Mrs. Adeola, who was the first to celebrate the World Orphans Day in Nigeria with her NGO, said CHADASH focused its attention mainly on widows and orphans.

She said beyond giving funds and materials to orphans, individuals also need to donate/volunteer services and skills for orphans to improve their chances of competing in the society.

  • NGO lifts 2,400 IDPs, orphans in Kaduna

A Kaduna-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Arrida Relief Foundation, has distributed foodstuff to 2,400 people, including the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), orphans, People Living With Disabilities and People Living With HIV/AIDS.

Presenting the items, the founder of the foundation, Hajia Rabi Salisu Ibrahim, said the donation is aimed at alleviating the suffering of the less privileged.

She said the foundation which started in 2002 as her family’s way of reaching out to the needy, is now getting relief materials from bigger organisations like the Sultanate Council and the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) for onward distribution to the less privileged.

She said: “What we just witnessed today is the opening of our Ramadan lecture and reach out to the needy in our society. This is the 9th edition of the programme and after today, we will be going from one community to the other. We will go to Rigasa, Ungwar Dosa and others.

“I started this foundation with my husband, with just five bags of rice. But, today we distribute up to a trailer of rice. This is because we now get support from organisations like the NCS, the Sultanate Council and Kaduna State Government.

“Today, we have given foodstuff like, rice, vegetable oil, clothes and mosquito coil to 2,400 people. Initially, we packaged for 2,000 people, but we got about 400 extra people.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that thousands of the beneficiaries converged on Deputy Governor’s residence located at at Albarkawa area, Gusau in the early hours of Saturday to receive the items.

Speaking to newsmen after the distribution of the items, Wakkala said the gesture was aimed at assisting the needy in the Holy month of Ramadan.

“You know, this is an annual programme. In every Ramadan I provide this assistance to various categories of the needy. This is my own personal assistance to them to enable them celebrate the forthcoming Eid-il-Fitr celebrations in happy mood.

  • Dickson marks 53rd birthday with orphans

Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson has promised to pay the National Economic Council (NECO) and West African Examination Council (WAEC) examinations fees for 49 inmates.

The governor said this when he visited the Okaka Prisons in Yenagoa, where he interacted with inmates preparing for the examinations.

Dickson’s media aide Fidelis Soriwei said the governor and his wife, Rachel, earlier visited and donated items to the Gloryland Motherless Children’s Home at Opolo, as part of activities marking his 52nd birthday.

At Okaka, the governor emphasised the importance of education in building a virile society. He noted that prisons played reformative roles, and not a breeding ground for criminals.

He thanked the state Comptroller of Prisons, Shiabua Uche, and workers, for their professionalism and alertness.

Dickson, who assured the prison authorities of the government’s support, stressed the need for the Ministry of Justice and other stakeholders to improve on delivery of justice.

His words: “The government has been of immense support to this prison complex, and we will continue to do more. We supported the completion of this facility. Today, I have gone round and seen things for myself, and I have made assessments. We have a clear area we need to do more. And as we get back, the Prison Services should expect more.

“I am delighted at the enthusiasm and support displayed by inmates. I assure them that they mean a lot to us, though they are spending time in prison. We will confer with you to ensure that their burden is made lighter as the law permits. There are a few things I will take up with the Department of Justice and Court System.”

While celebrating with the special children, Dickson encouraged them not to despair as God had blessed them with potential for greatness.

He urged parents and other agents of socialisation to inculcate in children positive values to help them take responsibility with a view to building a better society.

“If from my humble background, hard work and God’s grace and mercy, I rose to this level, nothing stops any of these children from becoming great personalities in life.

“We pray that our children should be more successful than us, and that is how we can leave behind a greater Bayelsa. It is when every family, local government and state does this that we can have a great country.”

Commissioner for Women and Children’s Affairs Mrs. Martha Jenakumo thanked Dickson and his wife for identifying with the orphanage and other less-privileged.

Mrs. Jenakumo also thanked the governor for approving the regularisation of employment status of casual workers of Gloryland Children’s Home and giving scholarship to some of the children.

  • Foundation empowers 230 widows, orphans

No fewer than 230 widows and orphans were empowered in five vocational skills by the Rose of Sharon Foundation in its second edition of youth empowerment programmes.

Held at the Multipurpose Hall, Yaba College Technology, Lagos, the training, which lasted about two hours, included wig making, fancy slippers making for both males and females, shea butter processing for export, perfume making and processed black soap making for skin improvement.

This was a follow up to the previous editions that focused on employability skills, basic components of Curriculum Vitae writing and how to chase job. This year’s edition was aimed at empowering the youth on vocational skills, which would serve as an alternative to white collar job.

The empowerment is one of the foundation’s efforts towards promoting the welfare of widows and orphans, especially to prepare the youth for entrepreneurship.

According to founder, Rose of Sharon Foundation and business tycoon, Mrs Folorunsho Alakija, entrepreneurship is good for the continent to enable it develop.

She noted that the rest of the world had been saturated with  entrepreneurial skills because they have been able to provide what the people need to live while African countries have barely changed their challenges to opportunities due to the inability to face challenges. This, she said, is why most of African countries are still waiting for development.

Mrs Alakija added that Africa is blessed with resources, such as manpower, weather and the population, adding thatthese are good for industrial growth.

She stressed that Africans need to key into opportunities and turn them around to make big changes for individual development and give back to the society.

According to her, millions of graduates are not employed due to their failure to identify opportunities and that tapping into opportunities like the empowerment programme will go a long way in developing the country. “Everything needed for the production is available locally. It’s embellishment and packagingthat are the only things require for theirproduction,” she said.

Mrs Alakija, however, admonished the youth to imbibe the principles of determination, perseverance, being focused and have the ideology of being successful.

“You are advised to be on the look out and see what competition about what you are doing is available so that you will be able to see the area you need to improve and you can begin to take yourself through to the next level. I am not going to tell you that it is easy. By all means, nothing comes easy but don’t run away at the first bus stop of a challenge you come across; forge on and look at the light at the end of the tunnel because that is where you are going and don’t turn back until you get there.

“If you don’t want to remain where you are, you need to put all the ingredients you need in place to be able to get to that location so that you will be able to say at the end of it that I have succeeded and I will continue to take myself to as many levels I can.”

Mrs Alakija noted that the foundation will not stop at empowering the youth alone but will take it as a responsibility to organise a forum to enlighten the participants on how to manage the business and other things to accompany the skill acquisition.

All the products made during the programmes will be exhibited during the 10th anniversary of the foundation in June when more empowerment items will be given.

Speaking on Own your future, be your own boss: the alternative job founder Sheroes Global Mrs Yemi Adenuga charged the youth not to let their circumstances stop them from doing what they want to do.

According to her,Africa is one of the best places to be an entrepreneur and one of the best ways to do that is the desire to solve problems and not let money be the only drive, add-ing that the problem facing the country is the quest to make money without solving a problem.

She noted that as an entrepreneur, there must be a problem in the society, and that solving it would be the major drive to success. She advised against  relying on one source of income.

“You should be proud of what you do,whatever you think as an idea you need to start now. Because as you are thinking about that idea, someone somewhere is also thinking about it.Use it to your betterment because if you decide today, no one will stop you. Ask questions around, use whatever you have positively. If it is an idea, throw it out and work towards it. Let people suggest different things to you and you pick best of it because the business you are going to do is for the people, therefore you should find out what people need,” she added.

Project Director National Youth Summit Nigeria Ambassador Utchay Odims, who spoke on youth entrepreneurship as solution to unemployment, stated that waiting for white collar jobs will impoverished the country while entrepreneurship is the best solution to its problem.

He, however, admonished the youth to follow their passion as the master of their life and make their life a valuable asset and not be discouraged achieving their purpose. He also added that self-determination is the key to attain success in life and avoid pride and greed to rule their life.

Dignitaries who attended the occasion included Flourished Africa founder, Mrs Kehide Okoroafor,  Yomi Otunbela Foundation founder, Otunba Yemi Otunbela, Toyin Alausa Foundation founder, Mrs Oluwatoyin Alausa, and So Rich International Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr Yemi Eniola.

The outgoing year witnessed a broadening of empowerment opportunities and advocacy  for indigent women and their families, Mrs Alakija said while receiving groups of cultural dance troupes.

She said the Enterprise Development and Skills Acquisition Programme presented a wide range of  opportunities to the participants to enable them increase their earning opportunities. She praised their high entrepreneurship, especially with the acquisition of skills in various commercial fields.

Wife of Lagos State governor Mrs Bolanle Ambode, who was the special guest, said the season was one of love to share, especially with people in special conditions “that do not permit the physical presence of their darling husbands and their beloved parents”.

Citing Jeremiah 1:5, she urged them never to lose hope of good tidings, noting that God would be available to meet their needs.

“God has you in His plan as women without husbands and as children without parents. He knows you like the palm of His hands and because He never makes mistake concerning anything that happens in our lives, His plan and purpose for you must materialise,” she said.

Ambode also commended the efforts of the Rose of Sharon Foundation for its untiring support to improve the conditions of these persons in all areas of life.

Orphans, IDP camps children stole show at Dogara’s high profile birthday bash

Orphans and children in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps are in for a good time this year. All thanks to the N250m realized at the 50th birthday bash of House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara.

The week-long event began with novelty football matches between his friends in the public and private sectors. In the match between the Senators and members of the House of Representatives, which ended in a goal apiece, Senate President Bukola Saraki equalised through a mysterious penalty kick to cancel out the earlier goal scored by the Speaker. There was also another match between the Speaker’s side and the private sector captained by industrialist Aliko Dangote.

The final leg of the Abuja event included a church service, witnessed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. It also included visits to 19 orphanage homes, where food items, toiletries, beddings as well as beverages and dried fish were distributed to the children.  At Treasure Orphanage Foundation and Abuja Children’s Home in Karu, a suburb of Abuja, Dogara told the children not to despair or dwell too much on the circumstances that placed them where they found themselves today.

Dogara assured the children that the proceeds of the birthday programme, including the launch of his autobiography authored by Dele Momodu would be donated to the less privileged. He urged the authorities and the well-to-do in the country to give back to the society.

He said: “We are here in response to the higher call of duty to support the less fortunate and less privilege in society. For the young people who are in this Home, I want to encourage you that there is no one who can stop you from rising to the top, only you can stop yourselves. All you need is discipline, the gift, the talent; time and opportunity are equally given to all of us by God. The circumstances of your birth or the situation in which you find yourself do not change the fact that God Has deposited talent in us. There are people who were in similar positions before now and have gone to accomplish so much. With God, discipline and focus, you don’t need anyone because as you are destined by God, He will provide for you.”

At the reception held at the prestigious International Conference Center (ICC), Abuja on Boxing Day, where ‘A reed made Flint’ was also launched, not less than N250m was realised. The exquisitely decorated hall witnessed the assemblage of movers and shakers of the Nigerian society and there was no dull moment throughout the evening with star gospel artistes Panam Percy Paul and Tope Alabi providing inspirational songs. The duo of Sam and Song blew everyone away with their brand of comedy at the event chaired by Saraki.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who wrote the Forward of the autobiography that was reviewed by Reuben Abati, in his goodwill message, said Dogara was a dependable ally, while revealing that when he assumed office, one of his greatest desires was to be blessed with men of impeccable characters to steer the country right.

“Dogara is a fulfillment of that desire,” Buhari said.  He was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha.

The guest list boasted of former First Lady Mariyam Abacha, Governors Aminu Tambuwa (Sokoto), Muhammed Abubakar (Bauchi), Nasarawa State Deputy Governor Silas Agara and Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu. The event was also attended by former Speakers Dimeji Bankole and Patricia Etteh.

Dogara revealed that Dangote Foundation Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have promised to partner him in his pet project of catering for the less privileged.
