Edo 2024: PDP stakeholders tip SSG Ogie as Ighodalo’s running mate

…party’s leaders move to stop Shaibu’s impeachment

The incumbent Secretary to the Edo State Government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie, has been tipped as the running mate to the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo, Asue Ighodalo.

Ogie, a lawyer, hails from Benin Kingdom in Edo South Senatorial District while Ighodalo is an indigene of Ewohimi in Edo Central Senatorial District.

Ogie, formerly Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s Commissioner for Works, is receiving support from Governor Godwin Obaseki of the PDP.

This backing comes as the Edo South senatorial district holds the largest voting population, followed by the Edo North senatorial district, with the Edo Central senatorial district having the least voting strength.

Our reporter gathered in Benin from reliable sources in the Government House of Edo state that the Chief of Staff to Obaseki, Osaigbovo Iyoha, was initially considered as Ighodalo’s running mate, but he was later dropped, and replaced with Ogie, a more experienced, but very-quiet and highly-cerebral politician, for him (Ogie) to effectively strategise with the Lagos-based lawyer (Ighodalo) on how to win the crucial election.

It was also learnt by our reporter that the impeachment move against Edo Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, who hails from Edo North senatorial district, might be dropped, given the intervention of PDP leaders across Nigeria.

The Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Shaibu, Ebomhiana Musa, assured that efforts were on to resolve the disagreement, with chieftains of the main opposition party (PDP) in the country stepping in, to ensure a quick resolution, ahead of the commencement of campaigns on April 24, and the crucial governorship election on September 21 this year.

Edo deputy governor’s impeachment plot was attributed to his last year’s suit at the Federal High Court (FHC), Abuja that was later withdrawn, based on the intervention of prominent Nigerians, for peace to reign in the South-south state.

Shaibu was also to be removed for allegedly not keeping official secrets, and for allegation of perjury, thereby prompting 21 of 24 Edo lawmakers, who belong to the governing PDP in Edo, and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party (LP), to sign the impeachment notice that was released at Wednesday’s plenary.

“Our focus is on Edo people, developing the state and making life better for the overall well-being of Edo people.

“My administration has done well by fulfilling my electioneering promises; We have built institutions and restored law and order in the state.

“We are not owing our civil servants; we will pay August salary on the 20th due to the holidays.”

According to him, pensioners no longer demonstrate in the state because their entitlements are paid when due while civil servants receive their salaries on the 26th of every month.

He added that the dream of the administration was to make the state the economic hub of the nation.

As more investors indicate interest in the Benin Industrial Park project, the Edo State Government has initiated a parley with stakeholders in the communities hosting the project, to remove any community-related encumbrances and set the stage for a hitch-free development of the park.

“There is also a N3billion Export Development Fund available for capacity development for entrepreneurs in the non-oil sector,” Executive Director, Business Development, Hon. • Massive turnout in Edo council polls

Massive turnout in Edo council polls

There was massive turnout of voters in Saturday’s local government elections held across the 18 local government areas despite the boycott by the Peoples Democratic Party.

Ten other political parties participated in the elections.

Sensitive materials arrive some polling units like Ward five in Uromi, Esan North East local government.

Voting started in many polling units as early as 8am.

Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Agriculture, Prince Joe Okojie, who voted at about 10am at Uromi Girls Primary School said the massive turnout was a reflection of the peoples’ trust in the APC led Government.

Prince Okojie noted the non-participation of the PDP in the election was a sign of the final defeat of the PDP.

Okojie said the people want a replication of Obaseki’s wake and see performance at the local level.

Governor Godwin Obaseki who spoke after he voted at about 12.30 pm, the election was peaceful. He said many supporters of the PDP have defected to the ruling APC in almost all units and wards across the state.

Obaseki stated that the opposition PDP was no longer existing in the state.

His words, “I think it is logical because every politicians aspires from his unit and if you do not give him the opportunity he will seek it from outside. So that was what happened. We can confidently say that the opposition party is none existence in Edo State.

“This is a precursor to 2019, Edo State as you see it is on lock down for APC. So may be the contest will be outside Edo State but Edo State is an APC state.

“What has happened is that the councillors themselves, the candidates, have gone out to mobilize people. I had challenged them that the votes they obtained in their election must be bigger than mine when I ran for election.

“I have been monitoring the distribution of materials since morning, reports reaching me says that things have gone on smoothly”.

At Iyamho in Etsako West Local Government Area, immediate past Governor of the state, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole,  said the local elections was a confirmation of the final liquidation of the PDP in the state.

“You can see people are celebrating democracy at the grassroots. They are more interested in local elections because that is the man they can see everyday. You can see people are keen to vote.

“With this election, We have just completed the liquidation of the PDP. There is no further proof of that liquidation other than that they have on their own admitted to defeat. They don’t regard the people who vote for them at the grassroots. They have my sympathy. This was the promise that from a party that used to arrogantly rig people out and ask you to go to court.

“We have demystified them and enthrenched one man one vote which is an area they don’t have competence. They are not used to voting, they are used to writing results. It shows for them they are ready to spend in the big elections. That they are not interested in the elections for local people reveal their character. I feel fullfiled that in my lifetime, the PDP surrendered without a blow.

“Their going to court was an excuse to their members that the are alive.”

At Ologbosere Primary School voting centre, Ikpoba-Okha Ward 7, with 39 units, the turn out of voters was impressive, just as it was at Itohan Secondary School voting centre, Ikpoba-Okha Ward 6.

Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie and Hon Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma described the election as peaceful and urged those remaining in the PDP to join the APC.

Ogie said the late jurist led the way and cleared the path for other Edo-born jurists, such as the late Justice Omorose Akpata and Justice Samson Uwaifo, to bring honour to the Edo people.

He said while Edo people were mourning Obaseki they were comforted that he lived long enough to see his family continue its record of distinguished public service by producing the current governor of the state.
