•Eagles star  plays for 69 mins

SUPER EAGLES forward Osaze Odemwingie was very useful for his English Premiership side West Brom as he helped them to a 4-2 away victory over hard-fighting Sunderland.

Osaze played for 69 minutes before manager Steve Clark substituted him in a game that appeared very tough.

Though the Nigerian did not score, but his assists in the Baggies opener proved much threat to Sunderland.

West Brom moved up to third in the Premier League table after recording a fourth successive win in the top flight for the first time since 1980.

Zoltan Gera curled them ahead and it was 2-0 by half-time as Simon Mignolet fumbled and Shane Long tapped in.

Craig Gardner’s free-kick gave the home side hope, before Romelu Lukaku stroked in West Brom’s third from the spot.

Stephane Sessegnon converted a rebound late on in a tense finale but Marc-Antoine Fortune sealed it on the break.

SUPER EAGLES boss, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, has made further clarifications over reports in the media, quoting him as saying that West Brom striker, Peter Osaze Odemwengie, has said he will not play again for the national team.

Keshi said Monday at the Bolton White Apartment camp of the national team, that his thoughts may have been misinterpreted, as the light skinned striker merely told him he was frustrated at the manner he had been treated in the past and fears a repeat, which he assured him will not arise.

“What he told me was that after fighting so hard to qualify Nigeria for the South Africa 2010 World Cup, he was dumped on the bench when the tournament proper started and that he fears a repeat following the manner he was substituted in the qualifier against Rwanda in Kigali, which was under me. Well, I told him that if I had my way all the players who featured in that match should have been substituted but I had only three substitutions to make because we played poorly in the encounter.

“He told me he understands my position and that he is now ready to return to the national team fold. We actually spoke for over one hour on Sunday (November 4), so there is actually nothing amiss about Osaze. He has said he will join others to come and fight for a shirt and that is the new rule in the national team,” Keshi said.

Earlier on Sunday, team psychologist, Dr Robinson Okosun, has spent several minutes talking to Osaze on the news making the rounds and the former Bendel Insurance of Benin star said he remains one of the pillars of the national teams, who still has at least five years of active football to play and cannot at this point abandon the Super Eagles.

“I want to win something with the national team and I think there can’t be a better time to achieve that than now,” he declared.

Similarly, 22 players out of the 24 invited to camp sweated it out on Monday evening as the national team resumed preparation for the match against Venezuela in the United States on November 14. Only Rangers International’s Ejike Uzoenyi and Kano Pillars’ Gambo Mohammed who was part of the team that won a four-club invitational tourney in Niger Republic were still being expected.

“We are happy at the turn out of players, the next step for them is to show that they can displace those based abroad and pick shirts not only for the friendly against Venezuela but the Nations Cup in South Africa and we are here to offer them the platform to prove themselves,” Keshi declared before Monday evening training in Abuja.

    Keshi lists Anichebe, Osaze

Nigeria striking duo of Victor Anichebe and Peter Osaze Odemwingie have been listed in the squad to face Venezuela in an international friendly in November.

Supersport.com can report that Nigeria head coach, Stephen Keshi has included the two England-based forwards in his team for the friendly.

The Super Eagles’ coach also included some new names in the team, according to a member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Committee, Paul Bassey.

But the nation’s football federation is yet to rubber stamp Keshi’s programme in preparation for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

“It is still unofficial though but Keshi has made a name of players available for the friendly match against Venezuela next month. Among the players named are Victor Anichebe and Osaze Odemwingie. Both of them were part of the team before now and that is understandable.

“There are also some new names in the list. The time between now and the Nations Cup is too short for trying out new players. But the NFF technical committee will meet on this,” said Bassey on a radio show monitored in Lagos.

Keshi has also been reported to be keen on handing Newcastle United forward, Shola Ameobi and Nedum Onuoha opportunities to battle for AFCON places.

5 reasons why Eagles snubbed Osaze

Osaze Odemwingie was again overlooked by Nigeria for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. MTNFootball.com compiles reasons why the West Bromwich Albion striker is not about to return to the Eagles nest soon.

    1. ‘Osas’ has refused to maintain a cordial relationship with the coach Stephen Keshi-led technical crew. ‘The Big Boss’ admitted he has tried to reach the outspoken striker on phone, but with very little success that he has since declared that the former Lille star is not ready to return to the national team.

    2. Many fans have still not forgiven him for the Eagles failure to qualify for the 2012 AFCON. He was so dismal in front of goal against Guinea in Abuja last October so much so that Eagles then coach Samson Siasia would later say that on hind sight he should not have played the striker especially after he had previously fallen out with him.

    3. He is no longer on fire in the English Premier League as he has scored only two goals in four matches thus far. And the form of Victor Moses on the right wing and the effectiveness of the likes of Brown Ideye and Emmanuel Emenike as top strikers now mean he is no longer missed.

    4. He is currently serving out a three-match ban after he kicked a Fulham player during last weekend’s EPL fixture. Team officials reason that he will not be match fit in time for the Liberia match on October 13 in Calabar.

    5. Besides his bust-ups with several Eagles coaches, from Amodu to Lars Lagerback, Osaze has also “slugged it out” with several of the Eagles key men including skipper Joseph Yobo. This cannot be good for any team’s dressing room.
