    JUST IN: OSIEC presents certificate of return to elected Osun LG chairmen 

    The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) on Sunday presented Certificates of Return to elected chairmen across the state, following the controversial local government election held on Saturday.

    Despite warnings from the Federal Government and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) against conducting the polls, OSIEC proceeded with the exercise.

    In a video announcement on Saturday night, OSIEC Chairman declared that all seats were won by candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

    Confirming the development in a statement, OSIEC’s Information Officer, Sadiat Isiaka, said the commission officially presented Certificates of Return to the newly elected chairmen.

    She said: “The OSSIEC Chairman congratulated the elected chairmen on their victory, just as he urged them to be good ambassadors of democracy both in conduct and service to the people.”

    The swearing ceremony will be conducted for the newly elected executives at the Osun State Government House, Oke-Fia, Osogbo.

    The Chairman of Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC), Hashim Abioye, has slammed the leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC) over its claims that the commission is frustrating moves to rectify issues on candidates’ credentials.

    The Nation reports that APC claimed that OSEIC, after issuing 47-hour ultimatum to rectify issues on its candidates in nine councils, shut the office to frustrate parties participating in local government poll billed for February 22, 2025.

    Contrary to the claims, Abioye, speaking with The Nation on the phone, berated APC for peddling falsehood against the commission.

    He said: “We have been most transparent and open in line with global best practices. At no time has OSEIC shut its doors against any individual, let alone a political party or its accredited representative.

    “On the issue of nomination, I magnanimously gave forms to some parties, one of which was the APC, which was given over 250 forms on credit.”

    Abioye added that the commission had been living up to its responsibilities and had not left anyone in the dark through his efforts and other officials’.

    The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) has given political parties a 48-hour ultimatum to address issues concerning their candidates’ eligibility for the upcoming local government election on February 22, 2025.

    Parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Action Peoples Party (APP), and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were found to have committed infractions in their candidate nominations during the screening process.

    OSIEC Chairman, Barrister Hashim Abioye, revealed this in Osogbo, stating that a verification committee was established to assess party submissions, checking candidates’ eligibility based on criteria such as age, tax compliance, and academic qualifications.

    He said: “We have written to the affected political parties so as for their affected candidates to remedy whatever is remediable within the next 48 hours.”

    “Some political parties, notably the APC, APM, and APP ran afoul of the provisions and procedures regarding the substitution of candidates in seven local government areas. We urge them all to do so within 48 hours.”

    Despite the verdict of the Supreme Court on local government financial autonomy, the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) has declared that the state is not under any pressure to conduct the LG election hurriedly.

    The chairman of OSIEC, Hashim Abioye speaking with The Nation on Monday, July 15, said: “Commission is under no pressure and legal hindrance to go ahead with its already scheduled timetable/activities for the conduct of local government elections in February 2025.

    “Notice of election goes to the very root of the election. Any defect in the notice will knock off the election as it will lack any valid foundational basis. 

    “The notice we have given was in line with the law. Both the Electoral Act, 2022, and OSSIEC Law, 2022 provide for at least 360 days before the date of the election. This we have done since February 2024. We are therefore in good stead to go ahead with our activities.”

    He added that the tenure of the caretaker committee appointed by the governor will lapse in August 2024 and expressed doubt if their tenure would be extended.
