How to achieve real development, by Osifo, others

For the country to achieve real development as planned, the government must pursue a quantum leap in growth.

Nigeria must also make efforts to address its challenge of over-dependence on oil revenue as a critical step to reducing its rising public debt profile.

Trade Union Congress (TUC) President-General, Festus Osifo, stated these during the TUC Southwest Summit 2025 in Lagos, with the theme: “Collaborate to transform: Building capacity for regional excellence and workers’ welfare”.

He said the country must not be looking for moderate growth; instead it needs a quantum leap; a growth rate that is much higher than population growth rate.

Osifo said unless Nigeria’s leaders adopt more proactive and resourceful approaches, the country would remain trapped in a cycle of inadequate budgets, deteriorating infrastructure, and wasted opportunities.

Rather than depending on crude oil production as the mainstay, Osifo urged the government and political leaders to harness or cultivate the nation’s enormous natural resources for improved revenue for national development.

He bemoaned this year’s N50 trillion national budget, describing it as too low – below $30 billion, when converted to the United States dollar (USD), and compared to budgets of other nations abroad.

He blamed the inability to harness the nation’s potential natural resources to improve the revenue on laziness of the political leaders.

Osifo stressed that Nigeria is a country with vast potential natural resources but left unharnessed.

He cited Netherlands, a country with smaller landmasses and fewer natural resources, saying that despite being an island with small size, it generated more money from agriculture, 10 times the money Nigeria generated from crude production

He said: “Nigeria has a budget of slightly above N50 trillion. We should never allow the trillions of Naira to keep confusing us, because across the world. There is a common denominator with which we carry our currency, and that is the USD.

“The value of our budget in USD terms in the last 10 years is somewhere around $35 billion.

“So, why are we really concerned about this? In Nigeria, we have huge potential. We have no business of having a low budget of $30 to $35 billion.

“But the reason we have that size of budget is because we are largely dependent on crude production. Most of the governments, not all, but the majority of them fold their arms. If you go to some rural local government areas, you will not even see the local government chairman until 20th to 23rd of the month when allocations will be shared.’’.

He stated  that the country would need an estimated $120billion to construct its federal road network, a sum that is roughly four times the size of its yearly budget.

The union leader described the gap between Nigeria’s infrastructure needs and available resources as alarming, accusing much of the political leadership of lacking the vision and innovation required to revive the economy.

“We stated over and over again that sometime in 2013, that a study was done that if we construct the entire federal roads in Nigeria, it’s going to cost $120 billion.

So, if we construct our entire roads at the cost of $120 billion, and the size of our budget one year is about $30 billion. That means we are going to need four times our budget to construct our road without paying salaries, without attending to education, without looking at healthcare, without paying pension.

“Four times our budget is what we need to construct our road alone,” he said.

He criticised successive governments for failing to diversify the economy in any meaningful way despite Nigeria’s vast opportunities in agriculture and solid minerals.

According to him, the chronic underfunding of infrastructure is not only due to low revenue generation but also stems from weak political leadership.

“Most of our political heads are relatively lazy. In some rural councils, you will not see the chairman until allocations arrive. We cannot continue with leaders who wait for monthly allocations before doing anything. They must think beyond the obvious and work for the people,” he added.

He said the theme of the conference was apt, urging members of TUC to take each topic seriously.

“We believe in learning, we believe in unlearning, and we believe in relearning, because that is the only way, as humans, we can grow. That is why, since we came on board, one of the things we’ve done is a strong partnership with Lagos Business School, where we have trained our head members. Almost all of them attended the training.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said Nigeria’s embassies must “buckle up” to promote exports, woo investors, and support FDI inflows.

Represented by the Commissioner for Establishment and Training, Afolabi Ayantayo, he reaffirmed Lagos’ commitment to fair pay, safe workplaces, and joint action with labour to address inflation, cost of living, and economic diversification.

He said: “Lagos State is proud to partner labour unions, employers and stakeholders in this important mission. We understand just how crucial workers are to the heartbeat of our economy. Your hard work, skills and determination are the pillars upon which our progress rests.”

“Collaboration is key. We must invest in skills development, fair wages, and policies that address inflation and the rising cost of living.

“In Lagos, we are committed to workers’ welfare and timely salary payments, but we also recognise the need to push productivity and innovation.”

Why cash-and-carry democracy will slide into authoritarian govt, by Osifo

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the September 21, election in Edo state, Dr. Isaiah Osifo, stated that cash-and-carry democracy would slide into authoritarian government or degenerate into a revolution if the alienation of the citizens continued unchecked.

He spoke as the guest lecturer at the 16th anniversary of The Reliance Newspaper, with headquarters in Benin, and being published by Sir Ralph Okhiria.

Osifo, a former two-time chairman of Uhunmwonde local government council of Edo, and ex-chief of Staff to former Edo governor, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, spoke on “Democracy in Africa: The Roles of Moneybags in the Nigerian Politics.”

The governorship candidate said: “Moneybags are in politics for business, to make a profit, not for service.

“The citizens must know and be vigilant to identify those that are in politics for service, and those that are in politics to take the resources of the state for their personal use.

“A people or an organization that emphasizes money, over good character, is bound to fail.”

Osifo also called on Edo residents and other Nigerians to know and be vigilant, to identify persons that were in politics to take resources of the state for their personal use.

Okhiria, in his welcome address, noted that the newspaper had maintained consistency in its editorial content, dishing out factual and unbiased news to its teeming readers, while expressing gratitude to all the eminent personalities that honoured him at the colourful anniversary.

  • New minimum wage announcement on May Day not feasible, says TUC president

New minimum wage announcement on May Day not feasible, says TUC president

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) President, Mr Festus Osifo, has said that the much-awaited new minimum wage may not be announced on May 1.

Osifo  said this while speaking with newsmen on Friday in Abuja.

”The negociation by the Tripartite Committee is still on going. If you remember, the TUC earlier submitted N447, 000 as the new minimum wage but we have harmonised our figure with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) .

“It is now N615,000. Regarding the when for the new minimum wage, the committee is still working.

“So, certainly, May 1, will not work for the pronouncement of the new minimum wage. Except if the Federal Government wants  to pay the minimum wage of N500, 000 to workers,”he said.

He  however  said that the N615,000 demanded by the organised labour is not sacrosanct.

”The government also has its markup and so conversations and negotiations will start and end somewhere, ‘he said.

He also noted that before organised labour arrived at that amount, a proper study was conducted.

”If you look at the N615. 000, you will think that the amount is right but at about the time we did that computation, a  dollar was about N1, 700.

”I am hopeful that the committee will meet after May 1,” he said.

NAN reports that the 37-member tripartite committee on minimum wage set up by the Federal Government  to continue further negotiations and consultations on the new minimum wage.

The National Minimum Wage Committee is chaired by former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Bukar Aji, with other members drawn from the Federal Government and State Governments, the Private Sector as well as the Organised Labour.

Vice President Kashim Shettima said the setting up of the minimum wage review committee is a reaffirmation of President Bola Tinubu’s desire to motivate the nation’s workforce which he describes as the cornerstone of the administration

Shettima notes that though decisions made to salvage the economy remain inevitable, the Federal government is not oblivious of the short-term implications, assuring Nigerians of better days ahead

He urged the committee to be diligent and consult widely in arriving at a fair and decent wage that can alleviate the sufferings of the people.

  • Osifo defects from PDP, promises 15m votes for APC

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, Stanley Osifo, who defected to the ruling party a day to the eve of the postponed presidential election, has promised to deliver 15 million votes to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking to the press in Lagos, he stressed that his supporters nationwide are in support of his decision. He said: “I have consulted widely with my supporters nationwide and we saw the need to support the re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari. This is to officially announce my defection to the All Progressives Congress.”

He explained that his movement was not necessitated by issues in PDP, but for the consistency in the fight against corruption by the ruling party, maintaining that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration has demonstrated its commitment to the infrastructural development of the country, adding that the railway project that suffered decades of setback has received life.

Buhari should play politics to succeed, says Osifo

Eddy Osifo, a lawyer, is former Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources in the defunct Bendel State. In this interview with Osagie Otabor in Benin, the Edo State capital, he speaks on the crisis in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and how President Muhammadu Buhari can succeed in office.

How do you see the current face off between the Executive and the Senate?
The APC as a party appears to be in government only and not in politics. If they are in politics, some of them who grew wings in the National Assembly wouldn’t have been able to do so. Because the APC is not in politics, it created a discounted tune between the executive and the legislature. If the APC were in politiccs, they would have known how to deal with the situation. The situation is not legal, it is political. I am particularly pissed by the rejection of Magu because Nigerains have never had it so good, in terms of recovery of of stolen properties of the federal government, particularly money before this time. The average Nigerian is in support of Magu and if there is a referadum between Magu and those legislature, Magu will defect them. Magu has not been caught stealing. He has only been blamed for some ethical conduct like he lives in luxury. One of them was that he took a first class flight to the hajj. That is not luxury. A person of his status is entitled to take first class flight. When I was Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources in Bendel State, I took Fisrt Class flight to Brazil, USA and Isreal. Whenyou are in certain position, you are entitiled to some things. Magu has not been caught in an act of stealing  or colloding with looters. They would have alleged more serious things. They have a right of rejection and the President has a right of renomination. But, the President should pay some attention to politics. It appears he has abandoned his party and the party has become weakened in that process. He should dedicate 40 per cent of his time to politics and 60 per cent to governance and for all Nigerians. The President is from a political party. He must nurture the party and strengthen it.
Why is it that the fight in the Senate is more from the APC Senators?
Those APC senators are the ones fighting anti-corruption crusade. Corruption is fighting back through the lawmakers. The President should not listen to such demands. They want to blackmail him. I do not see why people who belong to the same party are not supporting the ideology and programme of that party. If the APC is strong and really faces politics, such peole should not be reelected. If it were in our time, we will make their constituency hot for them and there is a way of doing it. If you make their constituency ask them question; whether they are representing Nigeria or their own interest. They are representing their own interest and not Nigeria.
What is your assessment of Obaseki administration?
He has shown that he is a very enlightened and sophisticated governor. There are areas he has touched, which were neglected by his predecessor. For example, the issue of technical education. All these theoretical things are responsible for graduates going from street to street without jobs. Obaseki is tackling the problem headlong and also tarring adjoining roads. We are observing him and he is making statements, which shown aggression against poverty and squalor in the state.
Will Obaseki succeed in his action by separating politics from governance?
He wil not succeed. If he does that, his political powers will be eroded. He must give 40 per cent of his attention to politics and he must keep making the party stronger and stronger so that when the party talks, nobody else can talk senseless things, unless you talk sensible things. In the party I belonged to which was led by Awolowo, when Awolowo tables a programme he will listn to your views, if your views are too selfish he will know and make you feel ashamed from superior arguments. Obaseki must not separate politics from governance. Politicians are not the selfish people we take them to be in this country. It is the dirty people who call it a dirty game. It is the most honourable thing. That is why you are called honourable when you win election. They are now turning it from honourable to dishonourable. They are to be despicably honest and not acquiring riches and personal wealth. That is what Buhari is returning it back to. Obaseki can succeed if he is not personally interested in wealth. That is the first cardinal principle of any ruler. That will make him not to be bias in taking decision. I see them distributing chickens to women to encourage them in farming. If they can do it to men, it will be a good thing. I see Obaseki as a versatile man. The indication he has showned show that he will succeed
Will Buhari succeed as a President?
He will suceeed with his economic policy. The only place he is lacking is his political policies or refusing to turn the APC into an idealogiccal group. If you hate wealth to the extent of not using it for yourself, the party you lead should be that nobody who loves personal wealth would like to enter such party. Many people want to live simple lives than those who want to acquire primitive wealth. I said Buhari will succeed because you will disover that all contractors that abandon projects across the country have returned to site. He has paid the mobilisation fee for the second Niger Bridge that eluded previous governments for 16 years. When he was away, everything was going on smoothly as if he was around. From all indications, Buhari is bound to succeed.
What do say about the Senate and the Custom boss?
It should be properly investigated by an independent body and not the Senate. The Senate should not continue to be their own judge in their own cause. If they continue to do that, they will have no respect for their belief in the rule of law or democracy. If there is an allegation that vehicles were imported without adequate payment, it should be investigated by another body and not the senate. We cannot believe that they are not bias.

    Omorede Osifo savours new marriage

There is no better way to deal with the ill fortunes of life than self-introspection after a faulty step. After a series of heartbreaks, former Edo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Omorede Osifo, appears to have found happiness again.

It will be recalled that some time back, she was like one in deep romance with ill-luck after she was relieved of her job as commissioner. But rather than despair, she dealt with the disappointment the best way she could, tightened her belt and moved on with her life. Today, the good times are back.

Osifo recently found her soul mate in popular Edo businessman, Ken Marshall, and has since got married to him in a low-key celebration.
