Osimhen features in FIFA’s no racism campaign

At the 74th FIFA Congress in Bangkok on May 17, 2024, a global gesture to combat racist abuse in football was unanimously approved.

The “No Racism” gesture, which involves crossing arms at the wrists, will be introduced at the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup Colombia 2024™.

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen and renowned retired Italian referee Pierluigi Collina were featured in a campaign photo promoting the initiative.

The gesture will be integrated into the existing three-step procedure for addressing racism. Players, referees, and team officials will use the gesture to alert the referee to racist abuse.

The first step involves stopping the match. If abuse persists, the second step requires suspending the match and evacuating the field.

If necessary, the final step involves abandoning the match altogether. The “No Racism” gesture will be adopted across all FIFA competitions and incorporated into the mandatory three-step procedure for all FIFA Member Associations, ensuring its global implementation.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized the importance of collective action against racism, stating, “Implementing the ‘No Racism’ gesture at the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup 2024™ is a crucial step in empowering players worldwide. We are eager to see this initiative adopted globally.” FIFA’s zero-tolerance policy against discrimination has led to extensive consultations with players worldwide, reflecting a strong commitment to change and inclusivity in football.

  • Great debate: Who is better, Osimhen or  Lookman?

Great debate: Who is better, Osimhen or  Lookman?

Former Super Eagles’ Head Coach, Jose Peseiro  may have stirred the hornet’s nest  following his  declaration  that Atalanta striker Ademola Lookman is far ‘better’ technically than  African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen. But a sizeable  number of football aficionados only took a middle  course as they do not want to be drawn into the trending debate, writes TUNDE LIADI…

The duo of Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen remain the biggest stars in the current Super Eagles squad. Lookman plays as a forward (majorly left wing) with Atalanta while Victor Osimhen is an out-an-out striker with Napoli.

They both played  in the Italian Serie A  and  were instrumental  to the Super Eagles; runners-up  finish  at 2023 AFCON-suffering an agonizing 2-1 defeat to the hosts,  Cote d’Ivoire in the finale match.

Two seasons ago, Osimhen made history with Napoli, scoring 26 goals in 32 league games to lead Partenopei to their first Scudetto in 33 years. Not only that, the 25-year-old (ranked 8th overall) also became the first Nigerian player to make the top 10 of the FIFA Men’s Ballon d’Or list. For his exploits with Napoli, Osimhen was awarded the African Footballer of the Year, becoming the first Nigerian in over two decades to wear the continental crown since Kanu Nwankwo back in 1999.

The numbers did dwindle a bit in the following season, where he bagged 17 goals in 32 games in an injury-ravaged campaign but  he is regarded as one of the best strikers in European  football at present.

Lookman on the other hand, enjoyed a stellar campaign last season when he helped Atalanta end a 60-year trophy drought with their 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the final of the UEFA Europa League.

The former Everton player bagged a hat-trick in the final to help Atalanta defeat Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen and he’s already been tipped as one of the  contenders for the African Footballer of the Year award.

But  the  man who led Nigeria at the AFCON tournament, Jose  Peseiro recently  made the headlines  in an interview with Sports Italia, claiming  Lookman  has an edge over  Osimhen as far as  technical ability is concerned.

“Ademola is more technical than Osimhen, more inclined to create the game, and who is now also scoring. He is performing very well this year. He grew up with (Atalanta manager) Gian Piero Gasperini, now he is always playing, and we are happy with him. high level, he too can aspire to do great things,” the Portuguese coach said.

He continued: “It’s no coincidence that they’ve both grown this year. This is because they’re both within a good system of play. Atalanta and Napoli want the ball, they want to play and attack. In these conditions, players get excited like this. Italian football has changed a lot in the last few years.”

Yet many keen followers of the Super Eagles  are won’t agree with Peseiro’s postulations  with many  saying  both players are good in their  respective rights.

“What I can   say is that both players are doing very well in their different positions and it is not ideal to compare two players who are playing in different positions,” Niger Tornadoes’ Assistant coach, Aliko Mustapha,  told NationSport.

“I will say Lookman is very exceptional in the wing and he is a terror whenever he holds the ball. You can hardly hold him down because he fights for almost everything.

“ I will say he had a good last season and the icing on the cake was the three goals he got In the final of the UEFA Europa League.

“I will be surprised if he is not among the frontrunners for the  2024 CAF Player of the Year because he worked for it last season.”

He said of  the Napoli’s striker : “Osimhen too had a decent season last year despite being slowed down by injuries. But he is someone who offers his more than 100 percent even daring injury to achieve his targets. What he did in February during the AFCON  as the only person in the attack,  is a rare  thing to do.”

Speaking in the  same vein, former Akwa United attacker, Akarandut Orok, noted there was no basis for the comparison because both players are doing well in their own peculiar position.

“It is just normal to fall in love with both players because their brand of football is unique but I am not just comfortable with the comparison because they are both good in their positions and they have something positive to contribute to the Super Eagles and their respective clubs,” Akarandut Orok said. “The comparison is not ideal and it is just like saying who is the better player between William Troost Ekong and Victor Osimhen?

“ They are playing in the different positions and have different skills. Lookman can unknot any defence with his football skills and artistry while Osimhen is a born fighter.”

Former Plateau United Technical Director , Ahmed Ibrahim , disclosed that both players still have years ahead of them and should be allowed to blossom than creating unnecessary tension between the two players.

“Everyone is entitled to his opinion but I want to state that both players are doing well and should be commended. I am cut for all these comparisons. The two players are still growing and should be left to continue to grow. Unhealthy comparison won’t do them any good,” Ibrahim, otherwise called Coach Bros,  noted

But  former  Nigeria international Bolaji Douglas aligned  his  thoughts  with that of Jose Peseiro but with a caveat.

He said Osimhen is a born striker but  lacks the finesse and skills to do more with football besides scoring, adding that the Napoli attacker needs to improve in that area of the game to become a complete player.

The erstwhile  BCC Lions player,  noted that Lookman does not have the bullish attributes of Osimhen , adding  that the former Everton winger makes up for that deficiency with his skills and trickery to unknot defence.

He said: “Osimhen is a beast when it comes to the physical aspect of the game, a very hard worker and a hustler, but lacks the finesse for the finer details which Ademola has.

“Osimhen handling of the ball looks ragged and could do with some finesse, I remember when young Rashidi Yekini first came to limelight and even of recent , Didier Drogba. Their games lack the finesse and that fine technical details, which they compensate for by their sheer strength and the ability to score goals.

“This is where Ademola and many other players who don’t have the strength and size tend to compensate for their lack of those attributes. They rely on their technical finesse, skills and agility. Ademola uses the ball better and will offer more tactical outlet than Osimhen.”

Douglas lamented the underutilization of Lookman in the Super Eagles whose only direct tactics make Osimhen thrives more than the ex- RB Leipzig winger.

“But at the end of the day if you ask me , who the team will miss most if not on the field, it would be Osimhen,” Douglas continued. “I say this because so far we have not tried to play to Ademola’s strength, we do not have the midfielders to make that work, rather what we have is a route , direct attack football which suits someone like Osimhen who has the strength to battle for 90 minutes posing a menace to the opponent.

“But in a more technically and tactically balanced team, Ademola’s role will become more apparent and Osimhen’s less prominent but still needed regardless,” he stated.

Frank Edoho advises Osimhen to snub Chelsea for Saudi mega deal

Media personality, Frank Edoho, has urged Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen, to reject Chelsea’s advances and accept a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli.

As the summer transfer window draws to a close, Osimhen finds himself at a career crossroads, with Chelsea and Al Ahli vying for his signature.

While Chelsea offers the allure of top-tier European football, Al Ahli has tabled a staggering N52.9b per annum deal, sparking a frenzy among Nigerian fans and pundits.

Edoho, a hardcore fan of Chelsea, known for his candid opinions, took to Twitter to advise Osimhen to prioritize financial security over European glamour.

“As a Chelsea fan, of course, I would want to see @victorosimhen9 at Chelsea but as a Nigerian, I’d say, ”Victor, are you nuts? Take the damned money and go to Saudi”, he wrote.

Edoho reasons that Osimhen risks facing immense pressure and uncertainty at Chelsea, which could impact his career trajectory.

“If he comes to Chelsea or PSG, and he doesn’t hit those numbers anymore, he’ll start getting offers from Bournemouth next season,” Edoho wrote.

    Osimhen : Saudi’s Al-Ahli  table new  N52.9b per-annum  deal

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is reportedly considering a new offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, despite recent advances from Premier League outfit Chelsea.

According to reports from Sky Sport Italia, Al-Ahli have presented a second offer to the Nigerian centre-forward. Gianluca Di Marzio claimed that the Saudi Pro League outfit are willing to offer Osimhen a four-year contract worth €30m (about N52,969,243,890.00) in wages per season.

Reports over the weekend suggested that Al-Ahli were prepared to offer Napoli €70m to sign Osimhen, almost half of the €130m release clause in his contract.

The player and his agent are now evaluating the offer and considering their best steps. Napoli remain adamant that they will close a sale before the end of the transfer window later this week.

Despite this new development, both Chelsea and PSG remain interested in securing Osimhen’s services. Chelsea, in particular, has ramped up their efforts in recent hours and is reportedly preparing to submit an offer to Napoli before the transfer window closes on Friday.

Napoli, for their part, are hopeful of finalizing the deal with Al-Ahli. However, the final decision rests with Osimhen and his representatives, who are carefully evaluating all offers without ruling out any options.

A source close to the negotiations stated:  “Osimhen and his agent will assess all offers and every situation without precluding anyone. The player is now open to the possibility of moving to Saudi Arabia, but Chelsea and PSG’s interest adds an interesting dynamic to the situation.”

Agent knocks Napoli over Saudi offers for  Osimhen

The agent of Serie A and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has revealed that he will not accept a move to Saudi Arabia and that he isn’t a ‘package’ who can be sent far away from Italy.

The Partenopei are  reportedly open to selling Osimhen to Al Ahli and the Saudi club would be open to meeting their demands for the Nigerian as well.

While Osimhen is still not keen on the move to Saudi, his agent Roberto Calenda has made it quite clear that they would not accept the move and wants to stay in Europe.

“Osimhen is a Napoli player, with a contract recently renewed to our mutual satisfaction. He made history in blue and when there were important offers (this year too) we always accepted the club’s decisions.

“As I have already said, he is not a package to be sent far away to make room for new prophets. Victor was elected African footballer of the year, eighth in the Ballon d’Or, he still has a lot to say in Europe. Respect and balance are needed.”

Meanwhile,  respected  transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, claimed both Napoli  are at crossroads over the unending transfer saga as options  are dwindling  for the Nigeria international.

Calciomercato also claimed that despite holding a €130 million release clause and commanding a hefty €11 million annual salary, concrete offers from top European clubs like PSG, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United have not materialized.

The only official bid has come from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli, reportedly around €70 million, which Napoli is willing to accept.

Osimhen, however, has rejected the Saudi offer, holding out hope for a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

With the transfer windows in Italy, France, and England closing on August 30th, time is running out for a European move. The Chelsea option, which could have involved a swap deal with Lukaku, has also fallen through due to wage concerns.

If no European club makes a move, Osimhen may be forced to reconsider the Saudi Arabian offer, as their transfer window remains open until September 2nd . Should he stay at Napoli beyond the European deadline, the club faces a dilemma: reintegrate him into the squad or keep him sidelined. Currently, the latter seems more likely, with Osimhen considered outside the club’s project.

Osimhen mulls Saudi  offers ahead of transfer deadline

Nigeria international  striker  Victor Osimhen is reportedly  considering a transfer to Saudi Arabia if after Deadline Day he is still at Napoli.

According to Sky Sports , Chelsea are considering other options outside Osimhen because of his high salary, which he has said he will not reduce.

PSG are expected to make a late bid for the Napoli, but should he still be a Napoli player by Friday midnight, he could decide to take the cash from Saudi Arabia, according to Sky Sports.

Sky Sports has reported that Saudi Arabia deal makers are targeting Osimhen and that initial contacts have been made again in the last few hours.

Al Ahli, Al Hilal and most lately Al Qadsiah have contacted the Super Eagles star.

The television channel said that the oil-rich kingdom may not be the player’s first choice, but he will hold on until the European transfer market closes Friday midnight to decide on such a move.

The Saudis have not agreed a transfer fee with Napoli but this is not expected to be much of a problem.

The transfer window in Saudi Arabia is open until October 6.

In a related development, PSG are expected to come back for Osimhen with an official offer tabled to Napoli with the Transfer Deadline Day on Friday on the horizon.

However, Il Mattino newspaper said the offer by the French club will be “low-ball”.

“PSG – with whom he (Osimhen) has had an agreement for some time – will make an offer (lowering the fateful 130 Million Euros clause set last December) only in the last days of the (transfer) market,” reported Il Mattino.

Osimhen has already agreed with PSG a five-year contract and an annual salary of 14 Million Euros.

The stumbling block is the release clause of 130 Million Euros, which PSG want to be reviewed downwards considerably.

  • PSG cancel interests in Lookman, Osimhen

PSG cancel interests in Lookman, Osimhen

French giants, Paris Saint-Germain, have reportedly cooled-off the interests at signing  Atalanta striker Ademola Lookman  as well  his  compatriot, Victor Osimhen after striker Gonçalo Ramos underwent successful ankle surgery.

Ramos had  sustained  the injury in  the 16th minute of PSG’s Ligue 1 opener against Le Havre last Friday and the Portuguese forward is expected to be sidelined for approximately three months as he recovers.

Despite this setback, L’Equipe (via TMW)claimed  that PSG do not plan to return to the transfer market to find a replacement for Ramos.

According to reports, manager Luis Enrique intends to utilize internal resources to cover Ramos’ absence, with Spanish forward Marco Asensio likely to see increased playing time.

This decision has significant implications for the Italian transfer market. It suggests that neither Victor Osimhen nor Ademola Lookman are currently targets for the Parisian club. Both Nigerian players have expressed interest in leaving their respective clubs, Napoli and Atalanta, but have not received satisfactory offers thus far.

PSG’s choice to rely on existing squad members rather than pursue high-profile replacements like Osimhen or Lookman demonstrates the club’s confidence in its current attacking options. It also leaves the door open for potential moves involving the Nigerian duo to other clubs as the transfer window progresses.

  • Osimhen unlikely to leave Napoli

    Osimhen unlikely to leave Napoli

A German  leading newspaper has stated that it is looking unlikely that Super Eagles attacker, Victor Osimhen would depart Napoli before the end of the current transfer window due to his outrageous transfer fee.

Osimhen has been one of the most sought-after players on the transfer market for over a year.

However, he has so far been able to avoid a departure with enormous demands  but the striker has stated his desire to leave the Partenopei.

But Napoli continues to emphasize to that Osimhen is still under contract until the end of 2026, with the extension done December last year.

With Antonio Conte now in charge of Napoli, the club have long been looking for a solution to fulfill the Nigerian’s allegedly urgent wish for a change of club as expressed by Matteo Moretto in the “Daily Briefing” by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

It is very unlikely, however, that an interested party will pay the mega exit clause of 130 million euros allegedly anchored in Osimhen’s contract.

At the moment, things are said to be pretty quiet about Osimhen, and previous interest in Saudi Arabia and from Paris Saint-Germain has cooled considerably.

Even an alleged desire from Chelsea, which the “Sun” recently reported on, has not yet proven to be very hot.

The English daily recently reported that the Blues are offering around 45 million euros for Osimhen and are also including none other than offensive star Romelu Lukaku in the deal. The Blues once paid around 113 million euros for the Belgian.

After a rather disappointing season in London, Lukaku spent the 2022/23 season at Inter Milan and 2023/24 at AS Roma. The 31-year-old certainly impressed at both stations. Lukaku’s market value is currently estimated at around 30 million euros.

But that’s not all: In addition to a transfer fee and Lukaku, 21-year-old midfielder Cesare Casadei is also set to move from Chelsea to Napoli. The Italian is likely to be valued at a low double-digit million sum.

Napoli shed light on Osimhen ‘blocked’ transfer

    • La Gazzetta dello Sport slammed Serie A side

Victor Osimhen’s career is still hanging in the balance  after Napoli director, Giovanni Manna confirmed  that  the transfer of the Nigerian forward away from the Serie A  side is ‘blocked’  unless  Chelsea, Arsenal or PSG prise  him away before the  August 31  deadline.

Last night, the Super Eagles striker  was missing  in action as Napoli suffered a 3-0 loss  in their Serie A opener away to Hellas Verona  with a weakened squad as  Michael Folorunsho, Gianluca Gaetano and Mario Rui  were all left out pending possible transfers.

This situation irritated coach Antonio Conte, who complained the transfer strategy was “blocked” by the failure to sell Osimhen.

“It’s an objective fact, what the coach said, the situation is blocked. Victor is an important player, with an important value and conditions. His desire is clear. We tried to maintain the integrity of the squad at this moment. We are not the only club in this situation and we’ll see what happens over the next 10 days,” Manna  reportedly told Sky Sport Italia.

Manna was coy on  discussing   Osimhen’s current situation amid a  possible move to Arsenal or PSG as being  speculated, adding  the former Lille striker  is still under contract with Napoli until 2027.

He said: “At this time, it is not right to say what sensations there are. We are working with his entourage to find the best solution. As we said, he is an important player, so it’s not that we can just find him anywhere.”

“He is under contract for another two seasons, so clearly if we don’t find a solution by August 30, we’ll have to talk to the player.”

In a related development, Italian  outlet ,La Gazzetta dello Sport, has reportedly slammed  Napoli  for their poor handling of  ‘Osimhen’s transfer situation’  after the African Footballer of the Year  was left  of the Serie A tie against Hellas Verona despite lack of offers.

“It’s natural to wonder if the management of Osimhen from the club has been impeccable,” Gazzetta dello Sport journalist G.B. Olivero  was quoted as per Football Italia.

He continued:  “They have to honour their promise to sell, as Conte said during his unveiling press conference, but without an offer and an actual negotiation, why haven’t the club used a champion who, moreover, has been abundantly paid?”

Napoli have already identified Romelu Lukaku as Osimhen’s replacement, but Chelsea are unwilling to accept offers below €43m.

“There would be no problem if they already had a replacement, but Lukaku is still waiting for the green light, so Conte can neither start the Belgian nor the Nigerian, who may leave,” added Olivero.

    ‘Chelsea need ‘killer’ Osimhen’

Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has again stuck out his neck for the London club to sign Victor Osimhen because he is the “killer” they need.

“I keep saying we need a Victor Osimhen. Go and get Victor Osimhen. Please get that deal done because we need an out-and-out striker. He is a player that is going to get us goals,” Mikel restated on his Obi One podcast

“Yes, I have said it, technically maybe not the best, goalscoring, he will get us goals and that is what we need. We need a striker who will stay around the box like Haaland.

“Technically, it’s not very good. A lot of people talk about his technique but he is a killer. He gets you goals and that is what we need.”

Osimhen’s future has yet to be sorted as his transfer away from Napoli has taken different clubs and several twists this summer.
