Transfers: Juventus may join race for Osimhen

Retired striker Alessandro Matri  said  Juventus ought to sell Dusan Vlahovic and reinvest in Napoli star Victor Osimhen.

The Partenopei already confirmed via President Aurelio De Laurentiis that Osimhen will want to move on at the end of the season.

He has a release clause in his contract that is believed to be set at €120-130m and Matri suggested a revolutionary idea.

“I would not rule out Osimhen going to Juventus,” said the former Bianconeri striker in his new role as a pundit on DAZN. “If Vlahovic ends this season well, he could be sold for €70m, while Matias Soulé can also bring in a very healthy profit.

“The purchase would not be unsustainable and don’t forget Juve have done this before with Gonzalo Higuain. They saved money this season and if they qualify for the Champions League, they’d have that extra cash to spend.”

However, it is worth noting that Napoli changed their contract negotiations after losing Higuain to Juventus for his €90m release clause in 2016.

Following that controversial and devastating transfer, Napoli wrote it into their deals that release clauses were only valid for clubs outside of Italy.

It was seen at the time as a specifically anti-Juventus strategy and still holds for Osimhen’s contract.

As for the Nigeria international, he is believed to be looking beyond Serie A for his next destination.

The Premier League would seem most likely for Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester United, while Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are also contenders for his signature.

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has iterated that there are no underdogs at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 2023 AFCON is one of the most unique competitions that has taken place on the continent. This year, many minnows have produced shocking results, and the big teams have fumbled badly.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were placed in Group A of the AFCON alongside Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea. When the draws were made, Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire were primed for the first two positions because of their abundance of talent. However, the opposite happened.

Equatorial Guinea topped the group after picking seven points from three games- one of which was a 4-0 win against hosts Cote d’Ivoire.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has featured in all three of Nigeria’s games, and he believes that the lower-ranked countries have stepped up their game. As such, he insists that the Super Eagles are not taking any chances.

Napoli confirm Osimhen will leave ‘to join Real Madrid, PSG or an EPL club’

‘We knew he would go to Real Madrid, PSG or a top English club’ added Di Laurentiis.

Speaking to CBS, Osimhen confirmed himself that he ‘already knows’ his next steps for his footballing career.

‘A rumour is going around about me linked with the Premier League,’ Osimhen began. ‘When you are one of the hottest strikers in the globe, you expect this kind of thing.

‘At Napoli, I just signed a new contract, I enjoy my time there, going through it with the team, and at the end of the season – I already made up my mind.

‘I know what I want to do with my career. Since I’ve started I’ve been the one taking my own decisions and everything’s working out for me, even though when I started, it didn’t go as well as planned, but I already had my plan.

‘I already knew the next step I want to take.’

Chelsea and Arsenal – both in need of potent attacking firepower – are thought to be among the Premier League suitors keen on securing the Nigeria international, but Osimhen poured cold water on speculation over a January move with the signing of a new bumper contract to extend his deal with the Serie A champions.

Osimhen casts further doubts on Napoli future

Nigeria’s star striker Victor Osimhen has disclosed  his mind is made  about  his next career move, adding he would make his next destination  public at the end of the season.

The reigning Italia Serie A top scorer with champions Napoli said as much yesterday  in an interview with  CBS Sports at the  Super Eagles’ AFCON 2023 camp  in Cote d’Ivoire.

“The rumour is going around about me and the link to the Premier League. In times like this when you are one of the hottest strikers of the globe, you expect this type of thing,” the Nigerian player said.

The reigning African Player of the Year acknowledged the fact that the Premier League in England was a top destination for any aspiring footballer, but for now his mind was settled on finishing strong this season with Napoli.

Okpala asks Osimhen to quit social media for AFCON

    By Paul Onehi

Former Nigeria international defender, Sylvanus Okpala, has expressed satisfaction with the current form of Super Eagles’ striker Victor Osimhen at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, adding the Napoli striker would score more goals with due concentration without recourse to the social media.

Osimhen opened Nigeria’s goal account at the AFCON in the 1-1draw against Equatorial Guinea and he ensured the team got the winner in the 1-0 defeat of Cote d’Ivoire as he was upended for the penalty that was scored by captain Troost-Ekong.

“I am Impressed with Osimhen’s performance so far,” Okpala, a member of the 1980 Green Eagles’ squad that won Nigeria’s first AFCON title, told Brila FM.

He, however, emphasized the need for Osimhen to stay away from social media and concentrate on the game even as he encouraged the former Lille striker not to give in to pressure of scoring goals.

He continued: “I am impressed with what he(Osimhen) has done so far. I would rather like him not to be going to social media anymore to listen to what people are saying. He should just take his phone and drop it somewhere so that he can concentrate.”

The former Green Eagles defender stressed that Osimhen doesn’t need to create unnecessary anxiety for himself as the team’s star player.

He expressed satisfaction with Osimhen’s contributions so far and encouraged him to remain calm while keeping his goal scoring form in mind.

  • Victor Osimhen: I owe a lot of my success to Kanu, Okocha

Victor Osimhen: I owe a lot of my success to Kanu, Okocha

Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen is more determined than ever to go all the way at the ongoing CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). After Thursday’s 1-0 win over the host country, the reigning Africa Player of the Year is optimistic that the Eagles will soar for the rest of the competition. Against the country of his idol Didier Drogba, Osimhen was outstanding and would have scored, but did enough to win a penalty, which, skipper William Troost-Ekong fired in for the lone goal of the match.

The 25-year-old believes that Super Eagles have what it takes to win the fourth title since 2013.

“The Super Eagles have a history closely linked to the CAF Africa Cup of Nations. Since 2013, we’ve been looking for another title, and that’s over a decade, which is a long time for a football-mad country like Nigeria. We are the country of Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu, our illustrious elders to whom we are heirs, and we owe it to ourselves to restore this image so dear to our hearts,” the Napoli striker told Cafonline.com.

“A lot of people, myself included, have high hopes for our generation. We know what we’re capable of, we know what we want. Côte d’Ivoire is a wonderful country, but we’re not here as tourists.”

He says it would be a dream come true for him to win the AFCON trophy. “It would be one of the best moments of my life.”

“I have done that with Napoli, I have made history, but no matter what I do, no matter how many goals I have scored, to be able to win the AFCON, I would go a long way in my life but probably when I do that I am done,” he admitted.

“I am really looking forward to winning something with the Super Eagles.”

Osimhen is, naturally, the focus of most attention around the Nigerian squad after his exploits with Napoli, scoring 26 goals last season to lead them to their first Scudetto since 1990.

“I have aimed high all my life while growing up, and this pressure comes naturally. I am the kind of person who doesn’t fold under pressure,” he said while speaking at the Nigerian team hotel overlooking Abidjan’s Cocody Bay.

“As the pressure comes I take it into my head to try to give my best and do well for myself.

“So far so good, I have been doing well for my club and country, which I feel like is the most important thing,” said Osimhen, who pipped Achraf Hakimi and Mohamed Salah to the African player prize.

“To win the African Player of the Year is just the dream of every young African player. For me to have won it shows the kind of things I have put in, the hard work, the sweat, the tears.

“For me, it is really a dream come true,” he added, appearing relaxed having just finished another interview with Togo’s 2008 African footballer of the year, Emmanuel Adebayor.

    Kanu, Okocha as inspirations

The lithe forward spearheads a Super Eagles side packed full of attacking talent and the aim for Osimhen is to lead them to their first AFCON crown since 2013.

Doing that would allow him to take his place alongside Nigerian greats such as Nwankwo Kanu and Jay-Jay Okocha, the latter part of the team that won the 1994 Cup of Nations.

“I used to speak with Nwankwo Kanu and Jay-Jay Okocha. I think I owe a lot of my success to them because they have been sort of an inspiration to me while growing up,” said Osimhen, who announced himself as the top scorer at the Under-17 World Cup in 2015.

“To be up there in the same category as them — not that I am better than them in terms of football, but in terms of what I have achieved — I think is huge for me.”

Osimhen is fresh from signing a new contract at Napoli, where he insists he is happy and has “a good relationship” with President Aurelio De Laurentiis.

His previous AFCON experiences have been frustrating, as he hardly featured when Nigeria –- with Odion Ighalo leading the attack — finished third in 2019 and then missed the 2022 edition altogether.

“In 2019 when I came, Ighalo was there. He is a big brother to me, so it was important for me to go through this learning process from him, to get this experience,” Osimhen said.

“I was supposed to be there in Cameroon, but of course, I had my facial injury.

“Now I am here. It is a dream come true for me. I don’t want to put myself in the centre but of course, a lot of people say this. I think I am more of a team player.

“I think we have the quality to make sure we have a very good tournament that we can be proud of.”

Osimhen scored as Nigeria were held by Equatorial Guinea in their opening Group A game, a result that increased the pressure before facing the hosts.

“The first game was really disappointing,” he said. “Going forward we need to make sure we get it right in the next game, which is against a tougher opponent.”

    Osimhen: We won’t underestimate Guinea-Bissau

Super Eagles and Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen has fired a warning message to his teammates ahead of Nigeria’s game against Guinea-Bissau, Soccernet.ng reports.

The CAF player of the Year award recipient praised his team for a strong performance against Ivory Coast, but urged them to remain focused and to avoid complacency.

“We aim for a strong performance against Guinea-Bissau. They will undoubtedly approach the game with determination, and we won’t underestimate any team, considering what they’ve done to qualify,” the former Wolfsburg striker said in quotes revealed by Sports Ration.

The Napoli striker is weary of the threat the opposition team poses and doesn’t expect an easy clash in their final group game.

“We met them in the qualifiers and know how strong they are. They defeated us at home, while we also beat them away. So, we are expecting a tough game against them. We will do our best to win,” the former Lille striker added. Nigeria are currently second on the AFCON Group A table with four points, behind the Equitorial Guinea on goal difference.
