Osimhen, Asisat, Nnadozie and Nigeria’s unity

    By Zayd Ibn Isah

SIR: Three Nigerian footballers, Victor Osimhen, Asisat Oshoala, and Nnadozie Chiamaka, enjoyed a triumphant day at the just-concluded Confederation of African Football Awards in Marrakech, Morocco.

Osimhen secured the CAF African Footballer of the Year Award, while Oshoala clinched the African Women’s Footballer of the Year Award for a record sixth consecutive time. Chiamaka, shot stopper for the Super Falcons, was crowned the best Female Goalkeeper of the Year, marking three unprecedented awards for a country since CAF first presented an award to Ghana¼s Abedi Pele in 1992.

Historically, two Nigerian players, Rashidi Yekini and Emmanuel Amuneke, went on to win this prestigious award given to Africa¼s most exceptional footballer in 1993 and 1994. The last Nigerian player to have won it before Osimhen broke the jinx was Kanu Nwankwo, popularly known as Papilo, in 1999.

The award became monotonous, similar to Asisat Oshoala’s experience, as Super Eagles’ players dominated it year in and year out. However, after Kanu won it for the second time in 1999, it seemed as though there was an order from above to halt Nigerian players’ winning streak. Not even the cerebral Austin “Jay Jay” Okocha, so good they named him twice, got to win the award until he retired from active football.

As the pursuit of the coveted award continued, the emergence of outstanding footballers like Samuel Eto’o, Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and others made it even more difficult for Nigerian players to break through.

The closest a Nigerian player came to winning the award was in 2013 when Mikel Obi was nominated after an incredible season with Chelsea and the Super Eagles. Till date, Mikel Obi seems pained that he couldn’t lay his hands on the coveted award, as the odds were in his favour until the final moments. He alleged in a recent YouTube interview with Dubai Eye 103.8 that he was robbed of the award. “I was robbed, mate,” Mikel said. “Before I went, I was told that I won it. I was at the airport flying to Nigeria because the ceremony was in Nigeria, and guess what happened? Manchester City was playing, and Yaya scored a hat-trick or two goals.”

But whether Mikel Obi was robbed or not, we are glad that the CAF Award has finally come back into the hands of our own, after 23 long years.  Surely, even Obi would be happy to see one of his younger brothers crowned Africa¼s football king.

The announcement of Victor Osimhen winning this year’s African Player of the Year was akin to the proverbial long-sought treasure finally being uncovered. After a prolonged search, the day of its rediscovery would definitely precede a joy that knows no bounds. The entire country erupted in jubilation, much like the overwhelming elation that accompanies the discovery of a sought-after treasure.

Victor Osimhen had an amazing Serie A season with Napoli after helping the Italian side win their first Scudetto title in 33 years. He broke several records in their way to the title-winning season, including scoring 25 goals to emerge as the highest goal scorer. Asisat, on the other hand, had an incredible season with the Barcelona women’s football team, likewise goalkeeper Chiamaka, who showcased her goalkeeping prowess for both club and country. Also worthy of note is the fact that Osimhen’s African Footballer of the Year Award came shortly after he won the Italian Footballer of the Year Award and was ranked as the 8th best player in the world during the recent Ballon D’or ceremony.

In all of this, I’ve come to realize one thing about the Nigerian spirit: that we love to celebrate our own. It doesn’t matter the tribe or religion; if someone makes the country proud, especially on the international stage, Nigerians will roll out drums and celebrate as if there’s no tomorrow.

Currently, Nigerians from all walks of life are celebrating the trio of Osimhen, Asisat, and Nnadozie, overlooking their region and religion. The only thing that matters is the colour of the country’s flag they represent. This further reinforces my belief that, beyond the social media drama, what truly binds us together is stronger than what tears us apart. “Though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand.”

Congratulations, Victor Osimhen: the boy from Olusosun Street is now the African Player of the Year. Just as he once said, dreams do come true, indeed. Congratulations to Asisat and Nnadozie for making the country proud as well.

  • UCL: Blanc warns  Barcelona of  Osimhen’s threats

UCL: Blanc warns  Barcelona of  Osimhen’s threats

    • Nigerian ace compared to Maradona

Former Napoli and Barcelona defender Laurent Blanc believes the Partenopei striker Victor Osimhen ‘belongs to the category of superstars’ and feels the Serie A side’s defence will be one of the obstacles for the Catalans in their upcoming Champions League meeting.

Blanc played for both Napoli and Barça as a footballer, and the two sides will meet in the Champions League Round of 16 in February and March.

The first leg is at the Stadio Maradona on February 21, 2024, while the decider will be played in Barcelona on March 12, 2024.

“In Naples, I discovered the real defensive culture. It felt like your [Italian] players were born with the souls of defenders, but Italian football is evolving, and this is positive,” Blanc told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “Barcelona are more attacking-minded and creative, but they must cope with an Italian defence. Surely, they’ll put on a show.

“Barcelona are facing a difficult moment financially, but to win La Liga [last season] was natural,” continued the ex-France international.

“It was nice it happened with Xavi, who is bringing back the traditional tactical values. Reaching the Champions League Round of 16 was a further reward, but now they need the tools to remain at the top.”

The meeting between Napoli and Barcelona will also offer a chance to see Osimhen against Robert Lewandowski.

“Osimhen belongs to the category of superstars. He is phenomenal, young, and with ample room for improvement,” said Blanc.

“He can become one of the best strikers. Lewandowski is closer to the end of his playing career and it will be an amazing duel, without forgetting other stars such as Kvaratskhelia, another top player.”

Meanwhile, Osimhen has earned a comparison to Diego Armando Maradona after an assist for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in Napoli‘s win over Cagliari.

The Nigerian striker was on fire on Saturday as he scored the opener in the second half against the Sardinians and inspired Kvara’s winner with an incredible assist.

Osimhen juggled the ball in the box, making several touches before delivering the decisive pass for his teammate.

Osimhen  was compared to Napoli legend Maradona in the printed edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport on Tuesday.

Journalist Sebastiano Vernazza rated the best and worst performers from the latest Serie A weekend and the Napoli forward received the highest grade: 9/10.

Osimhen’s solo assist was ‘worthy of Maradona’ claimed the pink paper.

The Argentinean legend has also been mentioned in relation to the upcoming meeting between Napoli and Barcelona in the Champions League Round of 16 with Il Corriere dello Sport writing that the game will be ‘Diego’s derby.’

One of the expected standout ties in the Champions League last 16,is the  draw between Napoli  against Spanish outfit, Barcelona even as  Victor Osimhen’s coach, Walter Mazzarri  has admitted that facing the  Catalan giants  is a ‘fascinating challenge’.

The Partenopei, who started the season under Rudi Garcia before switching to Mazzarri last month, secured a second-place finish in Group C, finishing eight points behind Real Madrid and six ahead of SC Braga to book their spot  in the last 16.

Speaking to Napoli’s media department, Mazzarri reacted to Napoli’s Champions League Round of 16 draw with Barcelona.

“I said after the match against Cagliari that all the teams who’ve qualified for the Round of 16 are strong and therefore any draw would be difficult, this one against Barcelona is especially difficult. For Napoli it’ll be a fascinating challenge.”

Yet Napoli President , Aurelio De Laurentiis,  is optimistic that  the Italian Champions  can   with stand the fireworks despite their  past poor showings against the Catalan giants.

This will be the seventh time that Napoli and Barcelona have met in official matches, however, the Italian side are yet to win in any of their previous six encounters with the Blaugrana.

Barcelona have won four of the previous six matches between the two sides, while the other two have ended in draws.

The most recent match between Napoli and Barcelona came in the Europa League Knock-out round play-offs in the 2021-22 season. While the first leg ended level at 1-1, Barcelona ran out 4-2 victors in Naples in the return leg for a 5-3 aggregate score.

Yet Laurentiis confirmed that he was ‘happy’ with his team’s draw in the Champions League Round of 16, as the Partenopei are set to face Barcelona over two legs in February and March.

Approached by reporters outside the Lega Serie A HQ  after the draw at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, if he was pleased with the outcome of the draw

De Laurentiis replied: “Very much so, that is a proper team, like ours,” reported via TMW.

The first leg between Napoli and Barca in this year’s Champions League will fall on Wednesday February 24, while the second leg, in Catalonia, is set for Tuesday March 12.

    • Osimhen, Asisat, Chiamaka and Super Falcons wins upend our tribal and religious covens

The 2023 Confederation of African Football (CAF) awards in Marakeesh, Morocco, brought with it the much needed elixir for Nigerians, as only the beautiful game of football can. In that moment when the awards were given, Nigerians characteristically were united in their joy and the silent and loud applauses were seemingly heard in the orthodox and social media globally and on the streets of Nigerian cities and villages.

Victor Osimhen (MFR), the Nigerian golden boy of Serie A club, Napoli, and  one of the best strikers in the world was crowned the African Footballer of the Year, an award coming after 25 years of Kanu Nwankwo’s win in 1999 when Victor was barely one year old.

Asisat Lamina Oshoala (MON), Nigeria’s ‘Agba Baller’ won her historic sixth title as African Female Footballer of the Year. Super Falcons goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, won the Best Female Goalkeeper in Africa while the Super Falcons won the Best Female National Team in Africa.

For a country that seems to have been divided by the antics of politicians in the 2023 general elections that saw some politicians sounding the ethnic and religious gongs, the victory of these three football players appears like a balm on the wounds inflicted by divisive politics.

The national jubilation that followed these highly coveted continental awards, both within and outside the country, points to the value of sports in national unity and integration. It didn’t matter that Osimhen is from Edo State, Oshoala from Lagos State and Nnadozie from Imo State. They are all Nigerians doing their best in the game of football and every Nigerian is happy at their success without attaching any ethnic tags to them. They are simply Nigerians doing the country proud on the continental and global football stages.

However, while we congratulate the trio for their achievements and awards, we must recall that they all started their football careers in the country. Osimhen started off with the Lagos-based Ultimate Strikers Academy before being selected for the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup. His sterling performance during the tournament attracted the management of VFL Wolfsburg where he started his professional career before moving to Belgium, France and to his present club, Napoli in Italy.

Oshoala has unarguably become the most successful African female footballer. She honed her skills in two Nigerian clubs, Rivers Angels and FC Robo. She then moved to Arsenal in 2015, from where she went to Liverpool, and later the Chinese Club, Dalian. In all these clubs, she showed class and commitment, with trophies to show. She presently plays for FC Barcelona in Spain. She has a string of firsts in her career, becoming the first African to score in a UEFA Women’s Champion’s League Final. Asisat has had a sterling career that has seen her global, continental and national recognitions, with a variety of awards.

Nnadozie also started her career with the Rivers Angels in 2016. She then moved to France and was outstanding in the last FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia. She has been recognised for her excellent goal-keeping that has earned her global recognitions.

Osimhen is today Nigeria’s most talked- about player even though he plays outside the continent. He is one of the most successful footballers in Europe, helping Napoli win the league they last won 33 years ago. He has come a very long and successful way since winning the Golden Boot in the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup. He is presently the African with the highest ranking in the Ballon D’Or awards at the eighth position.

These global recognitions of Nigerians in football should be very instructive to the governments at all levels. Sports and entertainment are the best unifiers in the country. In these two sectors, the best progress; so excellence is rewarded without nepotism unlike in politics and education. Success in sports is purely on merit.

The fact that these young Nigerians started off in Nigeria and  are now plying their trade in Europe must spur some introspection. Nigeria has the human resources, why are these talents being lost to other countries and clubs? Why can’t Nigeria put her money where her mouth is? Why is sports not having enough investment in infrastructure to nurture and retain the best? Where are the school sports where talents were hitherto discovered?

We are worried that entertainment and sports that are unarguably the two most lucrative and multi-trillion dollar sectors are not getting the attention they deserve in a country with a youth population that is in dire need of such vibrant sectors for the provision of jobs and the much needed revenue in local and foreign currencies.

The lethargy in sports investments also affects the entertainment sector where many young Nigerians have taken the world by storm through Afrobeats and other genres. The infrastructure/management in the country is so poor these young people are almost booked around the globe throughout the year and the bulk of their earnings and taxes benefit other countries.

Nigeria must realise that football is now a trillion-dollar business and more positive actions are needed to upgrade the game through real strategic engagements with global players. Saudi Arabia and Morocco are two countries that have taken advantage of the game and its many socio-economic benefits by investing hugely in, and growing it.

Indeed, Saudi Arabia has through their great performance at the last Qatar World Cup attracted great players like Cristiano Ronaldo whose presence in the kingdom has pulled other football big weights to the country. Morocco has been reported to have invested in the game in the last 10 years and they are now reaping the benefits.

Their performance at the last World Cup was therefore not a surprise to industry players. Moroccan football has prospered in recent years, with the men’s national team reaching the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the women’s national team reaching the round of 16 at this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, the U-17s also reaching the last 16 at the recent FIFA U-17 World Cup. They recently won the rights to co-host the FIFA World Cup 2030 alongside Spain and Portugal. Morocco is ranked 13th on the global FIFA ranking. Nigeria is now ranked 42nd,  an obvious retrogression from a fifth ranking in 1994.

Governments celebrating and planning grand receptions for Nigerians succeeding in Europe where countries invest in the game should begin to make way for better planning and investment to keep the youth in the country and make the game more profitable with a League that will attract other countries’ players too. They should equally make it easier for private investors to run clubs more profitably. Nigeria will be better with a more vibrant sports ministry that is ready for the future.

Chelsea unperturbed by Osimhen’s new Napoli contract

Chelsea target Victor Osimhen has agreed terms on a new contract at Napoli which includes a release clause worth around £112million.

Osimhen is a key transfer target for Chelsea as they plot a move for a top-level striker.

The Nigeria forward has reached an agreement with Napoli on a contract until 2026 and the deal is set to end any prospect of him moving in January.

But Osimhen could still be on the move at the end of the season and a switch to Chelsea remains a possibility next summer.

A fixed price tag has now effectively been set and the Blues have been encouraged that Osimhen is open to a transfer to Stamford Bridge.

Osimhen has described Chelsea legend Didier Drogba as one of his football idols and likes the idea of playing in the Premier League.

Napoli are understood to have started lining up replacements for the 24-year-old African Footballer of the Year, with the expectation that a major club will meet his release clause.

Chelsea are still considering whether to move for a striker in January as they finalise their plans for the winter transfer window.

Mauricio Pochettino has suggested Chelsea need to spend again to boost their firepower and he wants a target man-style forward to add height, physicality and goals to his team.

Osimhen, who fired Napoli to the Serie A title last season but has had an injury-disrupted start to this season, fits that profile. He would want well in excess of £100,000-a-week and Chelsea face a big decision over whether to rip up their wage structure to land a top-class striker.

    • Napoli set to meet agent of Nigerian ace

African soccer’s  king , Victor Osimhen, is confident  that the Super Eagles  will  weather  the storm   to win the  forthcoming  delayed  2023 Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON)  staring on January 12 in Cote d’Ivoire.

Nigeria  has been drawn  in a tricky  Group A along with hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea  and Guinea-Bissau in what would be a big scramble  for survival to progress to the knock-out stages.

Winners only on three previous occasions  in 1980, 1994 and 2013,  the Super Eagles  have already adopted a ‘Let’s Do It Again’ mantra  in the quest to win  their long-awaited  fourth  AFCON title.

Osimhen who was crowned on Monday in Marakech, Morocco, as the 2023 Africa’s Player of the Year, reckoned  that  the  coach Jose Peseiro’s much maligned  side, would be at the  ready for the  big AFCON test in January, adding  winning  the prestigious individual continental  award  would be a rallying  point  for him and his teammates ahead of the AFCON 2023 in Cote d’Ivoire.

“We are ready and preparing very well. The squad is in high spirits. We are raring to go and hope that we shall do well there,” Osimhen, the  2023 AFCON qualifying tournament’s  top scorer with 10 goals en route to  Cote d’Ivoire 2023, told CAF Website.

But former Nigeria international and 1980 AFCON winner with the Green Eagles, Sylvanus Okpala  was  warned the Super  Eagles  to be wary  of their expectations, adding  Osimhen  being  Africa’s Best Player  may add little or nothing  to the  national team if they are not battle ready.

“ Osimhen being the African Footballer of the Year  would only make some players  who wants to mark him at the AFCON to be jittery   and because they see him as a dangerous man, they will also  be ready for him,” noted the Olympian.

In a related development,  Osimhen ‘s agent Roberto Calenda is reportedly  ready for  have another meeting with Napoli after the Nigerian ace helped the Serie A side to reach  the Champions League knockout stages after he scored a goal in the 2-0 win over Braga on Tuesday.

As reported by Corriere dello Sport via TMW, Calenda was in the stands at  the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to watch Napoli’s win over Braga, and he is now expected to meet De Laurentiis.

The meeting could be the key step forward for the Nigerian striker’s contract renewal, which still hasn’t been finalised despite the Napoli president’s claims earlier this month that the parties were at ‘the signing stage’.

Osimhen could command interest in the January transfer window should his contract renewal not be finalised before next month, being the most exciting centre forward available in the transfer market currently.
