Napoli president faces trial for Osimhen’s ‘fraudulent’ transfer

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis will face trial after an Italian court said he and other officials falsified the figures in the transfer of Victor Osimhen from Lille five years ago.

De Laurentiis and other top Napoli officials will begin trial on September 2, 2026. Osimhen’s transfer involved player exchanges, which were inflated.

According to the public prosecutor’s office, Napoli used fictitious capital gains and accounting manipulations to falsify the club’s financial statements, a version firmly rejected by De Laurentiis, who, according to La Gazzetta, never attended the hearings.

The Italian daily newspaper reported comments from the three lawyers of the Napoli owner: “We are absolutely stunned by the judge’s decision. The prosecution and the prosecutors emphasized in their (previous) arguments that Naples has not benefited from any advantage in this case.”

For their part, Napoli issued a similarly scathing statement.

“We express our shock and dismay at the indictment issued by the investigating judge in Rome,” it read.

“All the technical investigations, carried out with the utmost rigor, have unequivocally demonstrated the regularity of the club’s actions, both in the accounting of transactions and player transfers.

Agent claims Napoli regret  Osimhen’s €75m deal to  Gala

Napoli reportedly  regretted the €75m payment Galatasaray made to complete  the move for Nigeria International Victor Osimhen last June.

Regarded as one of the most protracted deal in the summer, the  Transfer mediator George Gardi at the centre of the negotiations, George Gardi, has explained  that he had to ‘convince’  Osimhen to join Galatasaray, adding  Napoli got short-changed at €75m and clubs who offered €10-15m more than the release clause.

According to Gardi as per Football Italia,  Napoli had tried to negotiate  Osimhen sales to Premier League and Saudi Pro League teams but without success, and would otherwise have found themselves stuck with an unhappy player after completing a season-long loan deal to the Turkish giants
“At the end of the market last summer, I called the coach and the club to propose this player, and they thought it was a joke,” Gardi reportedly told Sky Sports Deutschland.

“They did not take me seriously. Victor Osimhen, one of the best strikers in the world, why would he come to Galatasaray at 26 years old? Why would Napoli give him?

“The last days of the market anything can happen, some details in contracts can get cancelled. When the market finished and other deals collapsed, I stepped in and I had a clear plan. I had a few hours to execute the plan.”

Osimhen had signed a new contract with Napoli with a release clause reported to be around €110m and a huge salary, although the Partenopei went into that summer believing he would be sold a few months later until Gardi stepped in with the proposal to  Galatasaray

He said: “I decreased the release clause from Napoli, which was over €100m, to €75m. I convinced Victor to extend the contract for one more year, and open the doors to a loan move.”

“There were many problems, we were at the airport and the UEFA lists were closing the day after, there were problems with the contract at Napoli, he was not sure whether to leave or not, and I convinced him to come.

“I was thinking to myself, what happens if he doesn’t come now? There were thousands of people already waiting in Istanbul and those were the longest two hours of my football career.”

Gardi admits that Napoli were left to regret some of their decisions regarding Osimhen, as the €75m release clause seemed to be insufficient in hindsight.

“He had a strong determination to come to Gala from the beginning, he had great respect for the club. After one year, when the clause was at €75m, this summer market was not the €75m of last summer.

“Napoli had thought it was a big amount at the time, but the market completely changed this summer. If you look at the transactions in the market, many were much higher than €75m.

“This is one of the best Number 9s in the world, perhaps one of the best, so to buy him at €75m was a good financial operation for the club,” added Gardi.

“This negotiation also lasted many months, because Victor had to decide where he wanted to play. He could choose among the best clubs in the world, only some of them came out in the press, but there were many more.

“He took his decision around the beginning of July and the clause was ending at the beginning of July, so when the clause expired suddenly they received offers €10-15m higher than the clause.

“Victor was very strong and he said I am only going to play with Gala. That helped us a lot in the negotiations. They did an unbelievable job to find €75m to pay Napoli in one year, we made history to bring one of the best strikers in the world to Galatasaray at the peak of his career.”

Oliseh laments Eagles  World cup exit with Osimhen

Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has lamented over the failure of Nigeria to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

On Sunday night in Rabat, Morocco, the Super Eagles fell 4-3 on penalties after scores stood at 1-1 after extra time.

“You cannot have a player like Osimhen and you cannot qualify for the World Cup. It is not possible,” Oliseh said on Global Football Insights with Sunday Oliseh.

“We have the players, but we do not have the organisation and team techniques because Osimhen is an exceptional player.

“We don’t have a team to make things work.”

Oliseh said the Super Eagles were beaten to an Intercontinental World Cup Playoffs ticket by a better DR Congo team.

“We were dominated by a better team, we lost to a much, much better side,” he said.

Osimhen  begins treatment for ‘strain and bleeding’  at Gala

Turkish giants  Galatasaray  said Super Eagles forward  Victor Osimhen  will undergo treatment for muscular ’strain and bleeding’  following a MRI examination at the club’s Acıbadem International Hospital in Istanbul.

Th club in a statement on its website after the MRI Scan yesterday,  confirmed  that their high profile striker sustained a muscle injury in the Super Eagles’ 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo on Sunday.

The statement read: “In the MRI examination performed today at our sponsor hospital Acıbadem, our football player Victor Osimhen, a moderate level of strain (strain and bleeding) was detected in his left posterior muscle and treatment has been started.”

According  to medics,  ‘a  strain is an injury to a muscle or a tendon (the tissue that connects muscles to bones), and it often involves damage to small blood vessels which results in local bleeding or bruising. This is a common soft tissue injury, often caused by overuse or overstretching.’

Incidentally, Osimhen  has  earlier said the injury wasn’t  something to worry about on arrival  in Turkey on Tuesday  as per A Spor , saying:  “My condition is not serious.”

Osimhen has been a key player for the club this season, scoring nine goals in all competitions this season, including six goals in the Champions League.

CAF Awards: Osimhen makes final three for  Men’s POTY

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has been named among the final three nominees for the 2025 CAF Men’s Player of the Year award, setting up a blockbuster showdown with Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi.

CAF confirmed the final shortlist on Sunday via its official X handle, reducing the contenders from an initial 10-man list unveiled in October.

Osimhen’s nomination crowns a remarkable year in which he shone brightly on loan at Galatasaray, firing the Turkish giants to a domestic double. The 26-year-old registered 37 goals and seven assists across all competitions last season, form he has carried into the new campaign with nine goals already, including a Champions League-leading six strikes, ahead of Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane.

He faces stiff competition from Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, the Premier League’s Golden Boot and Player of the Season winner following a title-winning campaign, and PSG’s Achraf Hakimi, who helped deliver a historic treble including the Champions League.

The winner will be unveiled at the 2025 CAF Awards in Rabat, Morocco, on Wednesday, 19 November.

Osimhen: I’m proud of Super Eagles’ resilience

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has opened up about his frustration after missing a crucial chance during Nigeria’s 4–1 extra-time victory against Gabon, but says he is proud of the team’s resilience and mentality in securing the win.

Osimhen, who plays for Galatasaray, recovered strongly from the setback to score twice in extra time as Nigeria booked their place in the African play-off final for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria thought they had sealed the match in regulation time when Akor Adams scored in the 78th minute, but Mario Lemina equalised for Gabon in the 89th minute to force extra time in rainy Rabat. Chidera Ejuke put Nigeria ahead again before Osimhen struck twice to complete the job. Gabon’s only major moment came from a VAR-overturned penalty claim.

Reflecting on his missed one-on-one effort before the final whistle, Osimhen admitted it weighed heavily on him.

“I was gutted as a person and as a striker. I had to keep it moving. It was bad,” he said. “Immediately I missed the opportunity, the referee said we are going to extra time. I told my teammates sorry, I will correct it in extra time.”

He explained how he battled disappointment to deliver when it mattered most.

“If I let it go inside me, I wouldn’t have scored the two goals. As a striker, you score the ones people believe you can’t score and miss the ones people think you can score. I make mistakes as a human, but congratulations to the team.”

Deeney faults  Osimhen on move to Turkey

Former Watford FC captain Troy Deeney has voiced his surprise over Victor Osimhen’s decision to play in the Turkish Super Lig, saying a striker of his pedigree should be competing at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Osimhen, who left Napoli for Galatasaray — initially on loan before sealing a permanent deal — has continued to dominate in front of goal in Turkey, maintaining the form that made him a household name in Serie A.

Speaking on CBS Golazo, Deeney wondered why top European clubs had not moved for the Nigerian forward.

“Victor Osimhen is one guy we can never really understand. Why is he in Turkey? Why isn’t he at a big club? For me, you always need a natural goalscorer in your team,” Deeney said.

Despite the debate surrounding his move, Osimhen’s consistency and lethal finishing continue to earn him admiration — and potential suitors — across Europe.

  • Osimhen is an unpredictable striker, says Gabon coach

Osimhen is an unpredictable striker, says Gabon coach

Gabon’s coach, Thierry Mouyouma, has revealed plans to devise a special tactical approach to contain Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen during their 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff.

Mouyouma described Osimhen as an unpredictable striker, citing his ability to play in behind and excel at set pieces and corners.

“We have to defend as we wouldn’t defend against just anyone. How do we actually defend against him?

“This type of player can be unpredictable, but he also loves playing in behind.

“The ability to reduce the distances behind us is one way, but even if you solve this problem, he has another side to his game, set pieces, and corners.

“That’s where the complexity lies. That’s where the work of a coach becomes interesting, because we are going to dissect, debate, and agree on a common defensive strategy.

“This Nigerian team could stay further back. We need to be able to take the match into the opponents’ half of the pitch. I think that’s the solution to the problem today.”

Osimhen has been in top form, scoring six goals in five matches for Nigeria and recently netting a hat-trick in the Champions League against Ajax Amsterdam. He currently leads the UEFA Champions League goal-scoring chart.

  • 2030, too far for Osimhen

    2030, too far for Osimhen

I love my country, Nigeria. I love being called a Nigerian. Forget about all the seeming negatives about the Country. I will remain here and exit this world a happy man. But the few times I’ve had to do a little rethink was on how badly our soccer teams play in spite of the huge talents we parade seasonally. Then where is the problem with our soccer rooted? Simply. Every succeeding soccer federation seems worse than their predecessors and it is very unfortunate.

Ordinarily, we ought to have been talking about a talent that Nigeria would be unleashing to the world full blown after being exposed as a member of the Golden Eaglets at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup, which Nigeria won. The world would be standing still waiting for Victor Patrick Osimhen in the country’s green-white-green jersey with applause.  It is important to note here that Osimhen won the competition’s Golden Boot award. He made his senior international debut in June 2017, and played at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019 and 2023, reaching the final of the latter competition.

Indeed, on Wednesday, Osimhen scored a hat-trick in 19 minutes against revered Ajax FC in Amsterdam  which earned Galatasaray a 3-0 victory, their third consecutive UEFA Champions League win this season. Galatasaray last recorded his feat during the 2012/2013 season. No prize for guessing right that the Nigerian was given the Man of the Match diadem, not for the first time this season.

With the feat on Wednesday, Osimhen became the Nigeria with the highest number of goals in European competitions with 25 goals, surpassing Obafemi Martins’ hitherto 22 goals record. On 29 May 2023, Osimhen was made a Member of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the late President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.

Osimhen said in a post-match comment on Wednesday night: “I’m also very happy about the goals, of course, but I’d like to thank my teammates again.

“We’re going to put it on top of that pace.’’

”We’ll continue to build on this momentum. I believe we’ll be very happy at the end of the Champions League campaign, and we’ll  continue to work on that.”

Asked about the possibility of winning the Golden Boot, Osimhen said he believes it’s achievable with the help of his teammates.

“Of course, I think I have the quality to do so, but I do it with the support of my teammates. They love giving me the ball, just like they did today,” he said.

“It’s a team effort, and I believe that with my teammates and their support, such a possibility is definitely possible. I will fight for it.”

Osimhen is currently the top scorer in the UEFA Champions League this season with six goals. The 26-year-old scored his first UCL hat-trick as Galatasaray beat Ajax 3-0 on Wednesday night. Osimhen becomes the second Nigerian to score a UCL hat trick, and is currently Nigeria’s all-time top scorer in the competition.

Osimhen’s records are intimidating, making him the future world  soccer if he keeps his form playing for both his European club and the country, in this case, Nigeria. But, the snag would be with playing for Nigeria at the 2026 World Cup to be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and the United States (US).

Rather than rue the miss by direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup in Group C which Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Republic of Benin, Rwanda, South Africa and Nigeria, the NSC’s and NFF’s chieftains are celebrating the fickle synergy between them. Pity! What they don’t understand is that there won’t be any form of permutations beginning with the African zone’s playoff where the Super Eagles must win her two matches, first against high scoring Gabon on November 13,  and the winner of the cracker between DR Congo and the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon to qualify for the Intercontinental playoffs in March 2026.

Already, the Confederation of Africa (CAF) officials have informed Nigeria, Cameroon, DR Congo and Gabon that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) machine would be used to adjudicate in controversial incidents during matches. Recall that the African continent didn’t use the VAR machines in all its 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

According to agency reports: ”The introduction of VAR for the playoffs could be a game-changer for Nigeria. It means that every single situation will be scrutinised.

”For example, if there was VAR, Calvin Bassey’s goal for Nigeria against South Africa in the return leg would have been cancelled for handball.

‘On the other hand, Nigeria have been on the receiving end of some terrible tackles in recent months. Case in point was the situation that got Osimhen injured against Rwanda in August. There could have been a red card in that situation, but the referee did not call it back.

‘’The Super Eagles will be hoping that the introduction of VAR favours them in Morocco.”

It would be a travesty if Osimhen watches the 2026 World Cup as a spectator and not one of the players of the competition playing for Nigeria.

The playoffs would be very tough laced with high wired politics, especially if some established countries fall back into the intercontinental zone of the playoffs. My heart freezes over the likelihood of Italy requiring the playoffs to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. That will be the day.

Sadly, Nigeria has fixed her resumption date for November 10 in Morocco with the Super Eagles Head Coach talking about the presence of new boys to strengthen his squad. He is the coach but many people are of the view that he ought to have known those he saw from previous camping periods to pick replacements from instead of inviting new kids who may not have visited the country. They consider these kind of players as luxuries, except Chelle is tacitly telling Nigerians that he is preparing for the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations holding in December in Morocco.

Chelle has a supporter in the team’s first team goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali who is already talking about Nigeria lifting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations diadem in Morocco in December. Call this part of the mind games for the 2026 World Cup ticket chase by Nwabali and Chelle, you could be right. After all it is good to aspire for greatness. But why do we like releasing our team lists after others have done theirs? Gabon released theirs on Thursday.

Leading the Gabonese25-man team is captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who will spearhead the attack alongside Denis Bouanga, the in-form striker who has scored eight goals in the qualifiers. Midfield general Mario Lemina also makes the list, reinforcing Gabon’s spine with his leadership and tactical intelligence.

Aubameyang and Bouanga have formed a lethal partnership throughout the campaign, combining for 15 goals that have taken the Panthers to the brink of a maiden World Cup appearance.

Coach Mouyouma expressed confidence in his team’s readiness, highlighting the careful balance of experience and youthful enthusiasm in the squad.

“This is a defining moment for Gabonese football,” Mouyouma said. “Our players understand the magnitude of this opportunity, and we are going to Rabat with full determination to make history.”

Interestingly, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has formally lodged a complaint with FIFA over what it describes as “a clear conflict of interest” in the appointment of South African and Benin Republic officials to handle Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off against Gabon.

According to the appointment list signed by Gordon Savic, FIFA’s Head of Qualifiers & International Matches, South Africa’s Abongile Tom will officiate as the centre referee, assisted by compatriot Zakhele Thusi Granville Siwela, who will serve as Assistant Referee 2.

Another South African, Akhona Zennith Makalima, has been named head of the two-person Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team.

The politics of the playoffs have begun with the choice of match officials. It remains to be seen if the NFF can stand on their feet to make sure there is always a level playing field in the playoffs.
