Eradicating poverty, insecurity top on Buhari’s list, says Osinbajo

The greatest challenges of the President Muhammadu Buhari- led administration are how to bring about 110 million Nigerians out of extreme poverty, as well as end Boko Haram insurgency.

This disclosure was made by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), on Friday night at a dinner organised in his honour by the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos.

Prof. Osinbajo, who noted that extreme poverty and illiteracy were the bane of the Nigerian society, stated that the government was open to ideas and contributions from professionals on how to solve the problem.

He stated that over time, successive governments have had various budgets including consolidation and budget of the future, but with little or no impact in the lives of the people.

While noting that the president understands the expectations of Nigerians, Prof. Osinbajo urged the elite not to leave eradication of poverty for the government alone, adding, “The real challenge today is how do you bring 110 million extremely poor people out of poverty? It’s not just a matter of creating some jobs, setting up industries and all that.”

According to him, “It is a much bigger challenge because that number of people are not just extremely poor, many of them lack education. I was in Borno State to visit the IDPs in the camps. One of the most frightening things  that I’ve seen especially going around some of those states is the fact that so many people are completely illiterate, especially women and when I say completely illiterate, you can imagine someone who lives in the north and does not even speak Hausa.

“That’s the level of illiteracy we are talking about. That you are living up there in the north and you only speak a local dialect, you don’t even speak Hausa let alone English or any other language. That’s the kind of situation that our country is in especially in terms of a broader picture and I think that for those of us who are academics and professionals, it is a great challenge to us to generate answers/big ideas that would solve these problems. We, who are there are all ears to whatever ideas/thoughts you may have about these issues.”

The vice president observed, “Over time, I have come to recognise the incredible responsibility that we have, especially those of us who are professionals. And I think that in many ways we have the training, we have the knowledge and everything that it takes to take our country out of where it is and put it where it belongs on the map and I do not believe for one moment that we need to be in a political office to do so.

“There are so many different ways by which we can make a serious contribution. It helps if we are in political offices but I think there are so many things we can do, so many different outlets for us to focus our minds on solving the problems of poverty.”

On the deadline given the military to end terrorism in the North East,  Prof. Osinbajo said it was achievable, adding that what President Buhari did was pass a presidential order to the newly appointed service chiefs, who he said, have also expressed their willingness to execute same.

“I know that it is entirely possible, I know that they can do it and we  have a great military, we know that there have been problems such as lack of equipments and resources, but that’s a problem that we have to deal with as we go along.

“We have to fix the car while the engine is running, you can’t say we are going to wait until we get all the equipments before we do it. We have to fix this car while the engine is running, that’s what we are doing now,” he said.

The Bayelsa State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) is waiting with excitement to receive the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo and the party’s National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, in a first mega rally of the party, scheduled to hold today in Yenagoa.

Osibanjo and Odigie-Oyegun, along with other APC governors are expected to receive over 600 PDP defectors at the rally, which will begin the party’s preparations for the December 5 governorship election in the state.

The state Chairman of the party, Chief Timi Oruminighe, said all was set for the event, which he described as the beginning of APC’s march to the Creek Haven Government House.

He said everybody in the state is waiting for the rally, adding that the turnout will determine the wide reception of APC in the state.

He said the party would not depend on federal might to win the forthcoming elections, but would continue to mobilise and convince people to accept the principles of APC.

Also speaking, a party leader, Prince Preye Aganaba, said residents in the state, groaning and suffering under the PDP government, were ready to receive Osibanjo.

While welcoming Osibanjo, the national chairman and other national officers of the party, Aganaba urged them to proactively design Programmes and activities to lead the party to victory on December 5.

He further appealed to the defectors to use their wealth of experience to create a lasting bond between them and founding members.

He assured the new members of maximum cooperation, and reminded them of the need to strengthen all the platforms of the APC.

Following the development, Dickson assured the APC in the state of adequate security before, during and after its planned rally.

The governor, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, also directed the relevant organs of the government to approve the request of the APC and other political parties to use the state-owned Samson Siasia Sports complex and other public facilities for political rallies.

Dickson said the gesture was in tandem with his commitment to ensuring a level playing ground and peaceful conduct of political activities in the period leading up to the December 5th governorship election in the state.

Dickson also pledged adequate security for all political rallies and campaigns across the state to ensure that such activities were conducted under peaceful and lawful atmosphere.

He noted that as the Chief Security Officer of the state, he had a duty to protect the lives and property of the citizenry and ensure that, people go about their legitimate duties, without any form of molestation.

He said the decision to provide adequate security for all political activities was also to check hoodlums who might want to take advantage of such events to breach the existing peace and security in the state.

He further explained that his disposition was also to forestall activities of some disgruntled politicians who might capitalize on the situation to create a state of insecurity and paint the government in bad light before Nigerians.

He warned that acts of indiscipline and unlawful conducts will be dealt with in line

Jonathan not target of any probe, says Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday dismissed suggestions that the Buhari Administration is witch hunting former President Goodluck Jonathan with the probe of the activities of some agencies.

On the contrary, he said the administration’s anti-corruption stance is designed to check corruption in all areas of the nation’s life.

“It’s not about a probe of a past government, that’s not what this is about. We are talking about our future, we are saying that we must put in place a clear strategy going forward,” the vice president said at the funeral of Madam Elizabeth Adesola Mamora, mother of Senator  Olorunmibe Mamora, at  the First Baptist Church, Ijebu-Ife, Ogun State..

“Not just about ensuring that people are made to pay for looting the treasury, our system of justice must be fair to ensure that anybody who does anything that is wrong is brought to account. We can’t allow impunity to continue. So it’s not about the previous government, it’s about any form of impunity,” he stressed.

Vice President Osinbajo said the anti-corruption effort of the government is a genuine programme aimed at sanitizing the country.

In his sermon at the service, the head of the Baptist Church in Ogun State, Pastor Segun Jaiyesimi, challenged political leaders to make positive change while alive, especially when they are holding public office as there will be no opportunity to do so after death.

The ceremony drew a large crowd of friends, associates  and relations from far and near including APC leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Chief  Bisi Akande, Governor  Ibikunle Amosun  of Ogun State, Governor  Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, former governors of Ogun, Otunba Gbenga Daniel and the immediate past governor of Rivers, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi.

  • Great expectations from Buhari, Osinbajo

President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief, Nigeria Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria and Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, (SAN), GCON, surely deserve our congratulations on their successful inauguration in Abuja, on May 29. Their ascension to the prestigious offices were momentous, consideringthe palpable fear that had overwhelmed Nigerians, prior to the last general elections. Their success also elicits excitement, because of their pedigree, particularly as persons who have never shown the predilection for ostentatious lifestyles and the concomitant corrupt self-aggrandizement. It is therefore hoped that their tenure will bring improvement in the material, spiritual and psychological well-being of Nigerians.

As we read this piece, the reverie from the inauguration parties across the country should have worn out. If it hasn’t, it should, considering the enormous challenges facing the country. While many commentators have continued to taunt the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), over their challenge in transforming from the ruling party to the opposition party; they fail to appreciate that the challenge facing the All Progressive Congress (APC), in transforming from the opposition party to the ruling party is even more enormous. The job of the opposition is to propound alternative programs, while the job of the ruling party is to execute successful programs.

So, for APC, it is time to walk the talk. I guess the first task facing the leadership of the party is to select those who have the integrity and the quality to rouse the expected change across the country. Such men and women would be required to sit down with the President and the Vice President, to share their vision for the country, in the next four years. With the presidential vision as guide, the egg-heads would brainstorm, and chart a policy direction and mission for the administration and the country. With a vision and mission in place, governance becomes a standard routine, with less stress for the leaders.

Luckily for Nigeria, between the two leaders, we have a potentially benefitting combination. While one has untrammelled bravery and force, the other possess intellectual power and methodology. If the two fail to harmonise, the presidency would be less effective, and our country would be the worse for it. But if the two and the contending forces they represent agree to work together, then there would be efficiency, just like in a new automobile or indeed any technology, which is a synchronisation of forces, to achieve a goal. That is why APC and her leaders must agree on a common vision, mission and the processes to achieve all that they hope to achieve, within the next four years.

Nigeria in many respects, therefore represents Charles Dickens’s the Great Expectations. Also, APC,Buhari and Osinbajofiguratively represents the great expectations for Nigerians. While Nigeria is a woven tale of ‘wealth and poverty, love and rejection, and (hopefully) the eventual triumph of good over evil’ likethe Great Expectations; the new presidency represents for Nigerians, the beacon of great expectations; and if you ask many, the solution to all the problems of Nigeria and Nigerians. As the President was reported to have observed to the Vice President during their campaigns, many of those shouting ‘change’, would when their expectations are not quickly met, join to curse and complain, against them.

For this column, like many other Nigerians, that great expectations has to be met. While it will be unfair to expect magic from the new administration, I guess the presidency already know, that Nigerians would not be willing to accept excuses, for any failure. To meet the great expectation, what is needed from the presidency is to tap into the vast human capital that abound in Nigeria. I believe that once President Buhari and his government show the inflexible determination to do it right, to all manner of people without fear, favour or ill-will, the majority of Nigerians would join them, to achieve the great expectation.

Across the states, the governors must also show the willingness to join, to achieve the great expectation. When it comes to governance, it is the wish of many Nigerians that partisanship should take the back seat, particularly as the next general elections are four years away.Of note, unless there is a change in the national economic structure of the country, the Buhari administration can only make a dent, on the gargantuan economic, social and political challenges facing the country. The reason is simply because there is little or no economic activities going on in most of the states of the federation, save the monthly gathering, to share the money received from the federation account.

As this column has severally canvassed, the states across the country must be given greater economic opportunities, if we hope to have a real national rebirth. While the presidency should walk towards reducing the items in the exclusive legislative list, for the federal government, in favour of the states; the President can immediatelygrant more economic opportunities to states, willing to walk the talk. For instance, states willing to mine minerals in their backyards, build and use rail lines within their states, generate and use their own electricity, dredge and use the water ways and harbours within their domain, build highways, among other economic activities, presently tied to exclusive legislative list, should be encouraged and granted the rights by the federal government.

Unfortunately for Buhari and Osinbajo, most governmentsin recent years, failed to meet the great expectations of Nigerians, and the international community. The result is that Nigeria is commonly referred to as a potentially great country. Now, it is expected that all the past challenges of the country would be resolved by the twosome and their party, that rode into power, with the mantra of change.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has defended the bailout fund policy of the Buhari administration.

Stating that the measure was designed at taking distressed states out of financial woods, he said it was not the first time government was taking the decision.

The Vice President spoke yesterday in Kano while assessing the standard of living of 100 children adopted by state government.

He disclosed that the 36 states of the federation owe commercial banks N685 billion, which has negatively hampered their ability to settle most of their commitments in respect of salaries and other entitlements.

This, he said, is why the bailout becomes imperative.

According to him, the Buhari administration operates zero tolerance to corruption, insisting that the era of looting public fund was over.

He pledged that the federal government will pursue to a logical conclusion, the implementation of social welfare policy that will alleviate poverty and ensure that democratic dividends gets to the door step of the common man.

Osinbajo expressed satisfaction with the condition of the children being educated and rehabilitated through Kano state Ministry of Education and Ministry of Women Affairs.

He described the Kano experience as a model and pledged support of the programme by the federal government.

He vowed that the administration will not relent in its effort to assist affected victims of Boko Haram insurgents.

The Vice President said the government had already set up a Presidential Fund Initiative for North East Boko Haram victims headed by General T.Y. Danjuma, which will among other things fashion out ways of assisting the victims in terms of education and provision of basic infrastructure for resettlement.

The Vice President said he was excited at the level of good condition he found the children, adding that the action of Kano State Government for adopting the children from Borno state was in the right direction.
