    APC dismisses claim on Tinubu/Osinbajo

    •Says it’s outlandish

The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday dismissed as sickening and outlandish the claim by the Jonathan Campaign Organisation that the APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, plans to become Vice President through the back door in the event of the party winning this month’s election.

The APC said the claim was merely designed by the PDP to divert attention from “the runaway success of the APC presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, at the Chatham House in London last Thursday.”

The APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said in a statement in London that the PDP and the Jonathan Administration “still do not have any answer to what has now become an epochal moment that has separated the wheat from the chaff.”

Buhari’s  globally-acclaimed outing, Mohammed said, “has presented Nigerians, and indeed the global community, with a choice between a bumbling, ineffective, incoherent, clueless, visionless and incompetent President and an assertive, knowledgeable, dignified, purposeful and principled President-in-waiting.

‘’Having failed to discredit that outing with a rented crowd, some of whom confessed to have been paid to carry placards they do not even understand, the PDP and the Jonathan Administration have now resorted to making nauseating claims that are totally untrue, absolutely incomprehensible and nothing but sheer bunkum.’’

APC said the claim is “the latest in a series of desperate moves by the PDP and the Jonathan Administration since the emergence of Gen. Buhari as the APC presidential candidate, and the clearest indication yet that they have no answer to the unstoppable momentum of a man of history.

‘’They have thrown everything imaginable at Gen. Buhari, but he has continued to wax stronger and stronger: They said he was not qualified, that he was too old, then they fabricated a medical report of an illness of their own choice, sponsored death wish adverts against him and instituted a myriad of court cases to stop him.

“After they failed to stop him, they went after the election itself, using the PVCs as a tool to launch a campaign for postponement and, when they realised that would not work, came up with the bogey of insecurity in the North-east to force a postponement of the election, hoping they can buy enough time to revive their electoral misfortune.

‘’With everything working against them, they engaged in a show of shame at The Chatham House that backfired badly, on the heels of their bare-faced lies that Gen. Buhari was hospitalised in London. The preposterous claim of a secret oath – reminiscent of what they do in their own party – by the apparently ailing spokesman of the Jonathan Campaign Organisation, Femi Fani-Kayode, is their latest desperate act.’’

APC said in as much as it has so far refrained from engaging Fani-Kayode in his game of character assassination, abuses and irresponsible name calling, it is “becoming seriously concerned that he may be caving in under pressure and reverting to his undignified past.”

The PDP had said Tinubu had made the APC presidential running mate, Professor Yemi Osinbajo swear to an oath to step down for him on assumption of office.

In a separate statement on the allegation, the Coordinator of  the Buhari/ Osinbajo Presidential campaign organisation in Osun State, Senator Oyetunde Husain, said it was an indication of PDP’s  envy and fear of the political capacity of Tinubu.

Husain said the allegation also “reflects the level of desperation and the effect of it on the thinking faculty of the managers of President Jonathan and the PDP.”

He added: “the PDP is a party that has long abandoned its primary assignment of governance; they were busy inflicting hardship on the people and neglecting their welfare, while Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other, were busy strategising daily on how to rescue Nigeria from the fangs of corruption, ineptitude and cluelessness.”

  • Osinbajo decries loss of 400, 000 barrels of crude oil per day

    • Laments rise in poverty, unemployment rates

The vice presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, said the daily loss of 400,000 barrels of crude oil to oil thieves and organised criminals was totally unacceptable.

Osinbajo, who was the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos under former Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, linked the ‘prevailing oil theft’ to the monumental rise in poverty rate.

He expressed concern over the socio-economic crisis confronting Nigeria at the first annual lecture series to mark the 73rd anniversary of the General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye at the 10 Degree Event Centre, Oregun, Lagos.

Osinbajo, who spoke on the theme, Harmonising Virtues to Gain Heaven and Earthly Prosperity, said the loss of 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day was unexplainable and unacceptable in a sovereign country.

He said the oil theft simply “shows that there is no law and order in Nigeria. In orderly society, the daily loss of 400,000 barrels of crude oil will not be possible. It demands urgent action in order to save our country.”

He added: The activities of oil thieves and economic saboteurs “have compounded poverty level in the country. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) data, more 112 million Nigerians are extremely poor.

“Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa. Yet, more 60 per cent of our population are extremely poor. We are one of the 33 poorest country in the world. Currently, more than 80 per cent graduates are jobless.”

Osinbajo also linked the oil theft trend to the country’s worsening social indices, citing the astronomic increase in the infant mortality, which he said, was put at 3.9 million between 2009 and 2014.

He also expressed disappointment at the magnitude of corruption in the country, which he said, was disturbing and unbelievable, citing the subsidy petrol scam of over N2.6 trillion; the kerosene subsidy scam of $7 billion and the missing excess crude account fund put at one billion dollars.”

He, therefore, said the country’s diverse challenges “present personal and communal obstacle to commonwealth, prosperity and happiness, which he said, God ordinarily expected human beings to create.”

Osinbajo canvassed fairness, equality and justice for all his countrymen irrespective of tribe, religion and political persuasion which he said, should be upheld Nigeria would overcome her prevailing challenges and crisis.

He urged Nigerians across the ethnic, political and religious divides to imbibe a culture of selfless service; by giving priority to education; embracing hard work, integrity, care for the downtrodden, love their enemies and humility, without which he said, growth and development would be a mirage.

Osinbajo opens ‘Wish Notebooks’ for masses

Ahead of the March 28 presidential election, the All Progressives Congress (APC) vice presidential candidate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), has opened a Wish Notebooks in his campaign office  on Ojo Road,  Ifelodun Local Devalopment Area, Lagos State. Prof. Osinbajo is Vice – President to General Muhammadu Buhari of the APC in the elections.

Osinbajo said: “The Idea of the Wish Notebooks is get closer to the masses,  to  the people at the grassroots, aggregate their views and eventually carry them along in the process of governance.

“This class of people will  come to our  office, write down their needs  and expectations from the government, so when you hear from the masses, you empathise with them and  consequently work with them to satisfy their needs.”

On why he opened a campaign office in Ajegunle, Osinbajo said: “ Opening a campaign office in Ajegunle is to stay close to the masses to be able to appreciate their feelings, to feel their pulse and carry them along, this is democracy in action

“The Notes are here so that all the masses from whichever tribe or religion will come here record their feelings, needs, demands and go back to their house. By the time they write their wishes here, we shall be able to address and attend to such wishes together.‘’

  • Presidential race: Why Buhari chose me-Osinbajo

Presidential race: Why Buhari chose me-Osinbajo

Vice- presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, told Assistant Editor, Dare Odufowokan, the secret of his emergence as General Muhammadu Buhari’s running mate in next Saturday’s presidential race. He also explained how the APC federal government will tackle the current economic and security challenges

THE vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 general elections, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has explained why the party’s presidential flag-bearer, Gen Muhammadu Buhari, nominated him as running mate.

Osinbajo emerged as the vice presidential candidate of the APC after days of rigourous and painstaking discussions amongst leaders of the party after Buhari was voted in as the presidential candidate at its national convention in Lagos.

Contrary to widespread fear that the choice of a running mate may tear the party apart, Osinbajo’s nomination by Gen. Buhari seems to have the blessing of all party leaders as all indications of a possible crisis disappeared following his unveiling by the party.

Explaining the development during a brief chat with The Nation shortly before addressing a crowd of traders and artisans at the Owode Onirin Spare-Parts Martket in Lagos last Monday, Osinbajo said his emergence was as a result of Buhari’s quest for an honest person to work with.

The programme tagged ‘One-on-One with Osinbajo,’ organised by The Concerned Christians Network (TCCN), is meant to give Nigerians opportunities to speak directly with the APC flag-bearer ahead of the February 14 presidential election.

The former Attorney-General of Lagos State said though the presidential aspirants had many honest and reliable persons to choose from amongst chieftains of the party, he settled for him after serious considerations.

“Buhari is not going to steal from the nation’s treasury. He is one man we all can vouch for. Here is a politician who will not loot the treasury. His honesty is not in doubt and this is why the whole nation is solidly behind him in our quest for change.

When you have a government that steals, the country cannot progress. Even if a barrel of crude oil is selling for N5billion, as long as people in government are looting the treasury, the money will not be enough to go round. The money will not be enough to take care of the masses because those saddled with overseeing our resources are stealing.

This explains why Gen. Buhari settled for me as his running mate. He wanted someone who will not steal too. He had so many of us to choose from. There are so many other honest chieftains in our party, the APC. However, after serious deliberations, I emerged as his choice based on his desire to work with a man that will not steal, just as he does not intend to steal,” Osinbajo told The Nation.

Osinbajo also allayed Nigerians’ fear that Buhari government will turn the country into a Muslim State. According to him, if Buhari is unable to force prominent Christians like himself and others who will run the government with him, to become Muslims, it will be impossible to Islamize Nigeria as a country.

“Buhari refused to join the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) as a military Head of State. It was Gen. Babangida’s government that took the country into the organisation and President Jonathan is on record as the first Nigerian President to attend OIC meeting.

All his (Buhari) aides are Christians except two of his bodyguards. If he cannot turn me, Amaechi and others, who will be part of his government, into Muslims, how could he turn the entire country into a Muslim state,” Osinbajo asked?

Speaking further during TCCN’s Town Hall meeting at Ikorodu Town Hall, Ikorodu same day, Osinbajo advised Nigerians to ignore the many lies being peddled about Buhari by what he called a jittery ruling party.

“There are many lies out there about our candidate. That is why we are out talking to you directly. Don’t believe what they are saying because they are merely lying out of fear. They know that the time for change is here and they are afraid. We must be determined to effect the much needed change.

Nigeria cannot continue like this. We have a government that has failed the people. We need change. The APC is that change and Buhari is the man that will lead the team that will bring about that change.

I’m here to explain why APC is the party that will bring about change to Nigeria. The country has never had it so bad in its history like we are having under this present government where insecurity is the order of the day. Unemployment keeps rising and more companies are folding up.

But if voted into power, APC government would tackle insecurity, corruption and create more jobs. Our priority will be to create more jobs and we have plans of creating 20, 000 jobs per state in our first year. We are going to create emergency job programme by which every state will have job for its citizenry. We are going to encourage companies to employ more and give them tax reduction.

Our focus is also going to be on power to help our economy to grow. Ikeja, which is the industrial hub of Lagos State alone is consuming 40 percent of power generated. We are going to decentralize power so that we can have decentralized power plants all over the country. If we do that, there will be no need for all the power going to the grid which requires gas.

Speaking on the Boko Haram threat to the unity of the country, Osinbajo, who explained that corruption is at the root of the country’s problems, added that APC government will tackle the menace.

“Jonathan’s government has spent N4trillion on defense and yet, soldiers do not have basic things to fight the insurgency. What happened to the N4trillion? If the government had provided for the soldiers, the ragtag Boko Haram wouldn’t have been able to stand the firepower of our soldiers who were among the best in the world.

This February election is all about getting out a corrupt government and putting in place a government that will do the right thing. Nigeria is currently running an abnormal government. The way people steal and deny others the benefit of governance is wrong.

Under Buhari, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will have full liberty to do its work. If everybody knows that as President, Buhari will not tolerate corruption, they too will not perpetuate it. Corruption fighting is going to be major policy of APC government.”

Osinbajo recalled that Buhari’s military government was able to suppress the Maitatsine insurgency. He is optimistic that an APC government will tackle Boko Haram by providing good leadership.

“Nigeria needs a person with the right leadership skills. We need a true Commander-in-Chief who will be ready to lead the soldiers against insurgents. A leader that will provide necessary equipment for the soldiers and give them reasons to fight for the country,” he said.

He also spoke on his party’s plan to introduce the ‘one meal per day’ scheme to all primary schools in the country as well as provide universal health care for Nigerians through health insurance and social security for the elderly and the poor.

Speaking to The Nation, Ololade Aina Salami, a lawyer and Coordinator, The Concerned Christian Network (TCCN), said they brought Prof. Osinbajo to Ikorodu so that people can speak with him directly. He added that Osinbajo, through the One-on-One-Campaign strategy has added to the development of political campaign in Nigeria.

At the Town Hall meeting were Senator Gbenga Bareehu Ashafa, Hon. Sanai Oyeniran Bolanle Agunbiade, Hon. Sunmi Odesanya, Princess Adenrele Ogunsanya, Barrister Jimi Benson, Asiwaju Segun Adeyemi, Alhaji Babatunde Rotinwa, Asipa Kaoli Olusanya, Mr. Munir Ajisebutu, among others.

  • Osinbajo condemns education funding

    Osinbajo condemns education funding

THE vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has condemned the funding of education.

Osinbajo, who spoke yesterday through Dr. Dotun Ogunyemi at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Campus Connect tour, blamed the nation’s educational backwardness on inadequate funding.

He said it was unthinkable that eight per cent was budgeted for education and about 20 per cent for feeding.

He said: “There is no way you can spend N4.2 billion to feed a four-member family. Ask how much have they budgeted for Obafemi Awolowo University?”

He said education will be pivotal during the tenure of presidential candidate of the APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

Ogunyemi, however, said Prof. Osinbajo was unavoidable absent at the event as he got an urgent late call from Buhari.

Prof. Osinbajo’s absence did not go down well with the students as most of them left the venue when they heard he could not make it, as anticipated.

  • Leadership role not for children, says Osinbajo

Leadership role not for children, says Osinbajo

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) vice presidential candidate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, said yesterday that leadership roles are not meant for children or those immature to handle them.

He spoke in Lagos at the maiden edition of a yearly lecture series in commemoration of the 73rd birthday of the General Overseer, Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch, organised by the Triumphant Elders Consultative Forum.

In a lecture titled: “Harmonising virtues to gain heaven and earthly prosperity,” Prof. Osinbajo noted that when leadership role is bestowed on immature persons, they see same as opportunity to enrich themselves.

According to him, every believer must have the transformative virtues, which he termed as “serving others, education, hard work and innovation, integrity, caring for the needy, fairness, equality and justice for all, love for enemies, humility and frugality”.

He also attributed the failures and challenges befalling the nation in both public and private transactions to the absence of integrity, adding that no one can exemplify the life of Jesus Christ without integrity.

Prof. Osinbajo, who used Pastor Adeboye as an example, said true prosperity and significance can only come from a life of selfless committed service to others.

“The question that you and I must ask is how does a man from Ifewara… a place not so prominent in the map of his own country in Nigeria – in under 30 years of adulthood – become one of the most influential men in the world without holding public office or fighting a war?

“Simple – he accepted the overlordship of Jesus Christ. He abandoned all personal ambitions despite the certainty of a stellar and comfortable career, and dedicated his life to helping others to find salvation and spreading the message of the redeeming love of Jesus Christ in every village, city and nation of the world. These are the virtues that make for earthly prosperity and a guaranteed place in heaven.

“Heavenly prosperity comes from accepting not a religion, but the truth that Jesus came to the world to pay for the sins of all men by dying on the cross and shedding his blood. Embracing that truth and accepting his lordship,” said Prof. Osinbajo.

Reeling out statistics of the challenges facing the nation, Osinbajo stated that poverty was raging about 112 million people because the righteous were not in power, adding that God has given to every believer five cardinal mandates – be fruitful, multiply, replenish the earth, subdue it, and have dominion.

He added that God would hold them accountable for their actions and inactions.

The APC presidential running-mate said: “Our challenges are poverty– 112 million extremely poor despite being the largest economy in Africa. We are one of 33 of the poorest countries in the world; infant mortality – 3.9 million children have died between 2009 and 2014; maternal mortality – 55,000 women die every year; diarrheal diseases – 110,000 yearly deaths; literacy – 10.4 million children out of school; 80 per cent graduates jobless; corruption; missing funds – N2.6 trillion NNPC petroleum subsidy scam; $7 billion kerosene subsidy scam; $1 billion missing excess crude fund; 400,000 barrels of oil stolen every day…

“Our challenges present personal and communal obstacles to prosperity and happiness. Who does God expect to solve these problems? According to Matthew 5:13-14, we are the light of the world and the salt of the earth…we are the solution to Nigeria’s problems. Our environment eagerly await revealing and manifestations of the sons of God.

He urged Christians to love their enemies, adding that those who have the powers to influence government policies that will better the ple should fold their arms.

“Some of us have the powers to influence governments and ask why there are no free health services, free education and social welfare scheme for the elderly? It is a fundamental responsibility God has given us. I am a politician today so that I can be able to at that level do things that will influence policies that will change millions of lives,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the organisers, Pastor Tunji Onileaja said their reason for organising the lecture was divine, describing Adebayo as a hero of modern gospel, who at 73 is stronger physically, spiritually and mentally and supervises about 180 countries across the world.

In his remark, Adeboye said Jesus was the way forward and the only way, insisting that it was God who turned his life around.

He urged anyone who wants to become influential to give his life to Jesus, adding that it is only God who can promote without demoting.

He commended the organisers and Prof. Osinbajo, noting that he had thought he would not attend the event and had earlier sent a pre-recorded tape to them.

He explained that the forum had wanted to start the lecture since his 70th birthday, but he did not allow them.

Adeboye ended his speech by praying for those who surrendered their lives to God as well as a general prayer for the congregation.

  • Osinbajo: plot for postponement deceitful

    Osinbajo: plot for postponement deceitful

The All Progressives Congress (APC) vice presidential candidate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, yesterday described the plot to postpone the February 14 and 28 elections as “absolutely devious”, saying there is no merit in all arguments for it.

Osinbajo spoke in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, where he met traders and professional groups.

He said: “I think it is an absolutely devious thing to want to postpone the elections.

“This administration had four years to prepare for the elections. There is no merit in any argument for the postponement of the elections.

“It is a ploy to delay the elections. It is absurd for a country as big as ours that we are conducting elections after four years of preparation, and saying at this point that we want to postpone. It is totally unacceptable.”

On the pressure being mounted on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, Osinbajo said: “INEC is prepared. Prof. Jega is a serious-minded person. He has been doing this for several years.

“If he says: ‘I am ready’, then he is ready. If he is pressurised, then we would know it is pressure. We will know it is not because Jega is not ready but because somebody else is not ready or somebody else doesn’t want the elections to hold.”

After a road show to the popular Bodija Market where he was received and hailed by jubilating traders, Osinbajo met with professional groups at the Ibadan Civic Centre.

He highlighted the various challenges confronting the country due to what he described as “poor governance or leadership”. Osinbajo unveiled the APC manifesto.

It includes immediate creation of 20,000 jobs in each state with the assistance of the APC-led Federal Government; controlling and ultimately eradicating corruption;  feeding of primary school pupils;  tax discounts for entrepreneurs who employ a minimum of 10 workers and pay the minimum wage; ending power problem through privatisation of transmission; developing Independent Power Projects as well as exploring natural gas.

The manifesto also includes free education in primary and secondary school as well as technology, engineering, mathematics and education courses in tertiary institutions. Health insurance, social security, investment in housing and infrastructure, road network and railway.

The APC candidate added that the APC government would revive commodity boards to transform the agriculture sector, adding that the government would invest in rice production and milling and invest in the value chain of common farm produce.

To help the entertainment industry, Osinbajo said the APC government would fight piracy.

At the town hall meeting were medical doctors, lawyers, artistes, journalists, investors and other professionals.
