    Osinbajo hails creative industry

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has hailed the creativity and ingenuity of Nigerian artistes on projects that boost the image of the country.

He made the commendation after watching a performance of the cultural troupe, ‘Wakaa the Musical’, on Monday night at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

Osinbajo, his wife, Dolapo, Senate President Bukola Saraki and Information Minister, Lai Mohammed were part of the dignitaries that watched the cultural fiesta.

Osinbajo, who described the event as trilling said: “I have never seen anything like this before; it is absolutely incredible; this is wonderful.’’

The producer of the theatre group and Chief Executive of Terra Culture, Mrs Bolanle Austen-Peters, while welcoming guests to the occasion said it was the group’s way of promoting creativity in the industry among Nigerian youths.

“Art is still taking the back stage in the country but we are prepared to boost it greatly due to the diversification drive of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

“This industry is not what to be ashamed of and the youths can really make a living out it in spite of what one studied in school.

“We need to look at the kind of education that we give to our young people so that they can be self- employed and increase their financial status,’’ the lawyer-turned artiste added.

On the message of Wakaa, Austen-Peters said it was a satire and a message of hope, depicting the triumph of good over evil, also of love.

She thanked the sponsors of the event and stressed the need for the country’s industrialists and philanthropists to “put their money where the message is’’.

Austen-Peters said that the measure was to encourage more artistes and those in the creative industry to produce higher quality of products to be displayed outside the country.

    • Preacher seeks national conference

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday gave the assurance that Nigeria will overcome the challenges facing the country and be prosperouns again.

Osinbajo spoke at the 2017 Independence Day Interdenominational Church Service at the National Christian Centre in Abuja.

The service was with the theme “National Unity in the Bond of Peace and Love.”

The Vice President said the greatest commandment in the scripture is “love the Lord your God with all your strength and love your neigbour as yourself.”

He also reminded the congregation that the Bible encourages people to love their enemies.

To those who sought revenge, Osinbajo reminded them that the Lord says vengeance is His.

He said “I was very inspired by the words spoken by professor Turaki a few minutes ago very challenging words that he spoke and I think that in some sense it led to the question who does God hold responsible for the destiny of nations, there is a people of whom Jesus said that you are the salt of the earth and the light of the world, a people who are charged with sweet name but bitterness of hate of selfishness and pride.”

“Our nation is at a point where we should teach the people the virtue of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Osinbajo prayed that the nation will blossom and overcome challenges and that the glory of the former days will be adding that nothing could “be compared to the glory of the latter days.”

He declared that the nation would be joyful and prosperous.

Speaking during the service, former Head of State Yakubu Gowon said Nigeria’s unity had already been fought for.

He said: “Continue to pray for the peace and unity of Nigeria. Do not fear, Nigeria has fought for its unity and the unity will continue with your prayer.”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Head of Interim National Government Ernest Shonekan, who came with Gowon to the podium said: “We concur.” and left the stage with him.

Delivering the message, Rev. Aminu Turaki (TEKAN/ECWA) called on the Federal Government to urgently convene a National Conference to resolve the divisive challenges facing the nation.

He titled his message as “Godly Leadership” and cited Jeremiah 9: 23-24, Isaiah 11: 1-5.

While appealing to all Nigerians to stop attacking one another either because of religious or ethnic differences, he called on them to embrace values that unite the nation and resist divisive tendencies.

Stressing that God holds all leaders accountable to the ordinary people, he said that Godliness is the moral character of God.

“Having power over the people are not good enough, the leaders must be rooted in Godly character.” he said

Noting that the Book of Jeremiah in the Holy Bible described the soul of Nigeria,  he said that selfishness and lack of knowing God are among the factors responsible for the challenges facing Nigeria.

He said “Too much religion without ethics is useless. Religion without ethics and morality is dead.”

Stressing that immorality and violence is everywhere in the world, he said that the Nigerian society is in dire need of prophets that preache peace and not violence.

Scripture reading I was taken from Ephesians 4:1-16 by Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen

The Scripture reading II was taken by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, from 1st Corinthians 13: 1-13.

Beside the prayer of thanksgiving, intercessory prayers were also offered for the Nigerian nation, Security and economic challenges, the Nigerian Leadership.

Other intercessory prayers were for political stability, Nigerian families, peace and development in the country and the unity of the Church.

There werealso praise and worship by Hallelujah Nigeria 400hours Praise Team and special song by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Mass Choir.

Others dignitaries and clerics at the service were National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress John Odigie-Oyegun, wife of the Vice President Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu who was represented by Prof. Olusola Adeyeye.

Also at the service were CAN President Rev. Samson Ayokunle, Archbishop Nicholas Okoh, Bishop Peter Ogunmuyiwa and top government officials.

  • Police defy Osinbajo on DCP who busted N360m fraud

Police defy Osinbajo on DCP who busted N360m fraud

The police authorities have snubbed a request made by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for the secondment of a police officer for a special assignment.

Police Inspector General Ibrahim Idris, The Nation gathered, declined the release of Deputy Commissioner (DSP) Abduyari Lafia to serve on the Special Presidential Panel for the Recovery of Public Property as requested by a Presidency letter dated September 21, 2017.

Instead, the police boss posted 12 officers from the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police and below to the panel.

Lafia had earned the confidence of the panel for uncovering how a syndicate defrauded a businessman, Mr. Austine Ugochukwu Albert, of $1 million.

His recommendation for promotion to the rank of Commissioner of Police was withdrawn at the last minute, following his rebuff of alleged pressure from some bigwigs to stay action on the $1 million.

Although Lafia was said to have been promised a bribe of $100,000, he insisted on bringing members of the syndicate to justice.

Following his unyielding position, some police officers were alleged to have conspired to transfer him from the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja to the Police Academy (POLAC) in Kano.

Before his posting to Kano, he was said to have recovered more than $205,000.

Based on his track records, the Special Investigation Panel requested for Lafia’s service on the directive of Vice President Osinbajo.

The Chairman of the SIP, Mr. Okoi Obono-Obla, who signed the letter, said: “I am directed by His Excellency, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN (GCON) to request for the release of DCP Abduyari S. Lafia to serve in the Special Presidential Panel for the Recovery of Public Property.

“DCP Abduyari S. Lafia is presently posted to POLAC with AP NO-41804.

“While thanking you for your usual cooperation, please be assured of my high regards and esteem.”

However, sources told The Nation that DCP Lafia was not released to the SIP owing to internal wrangling in the police.

A highly placed source familiar with the matter said: “The panel was shocked that those it did not request for were sent by the IGP.

“All attempts to get Lafia redeployed for the special assignment have been rebuffed.

“What shocked most people is that the affected DCP was requested for by the panel based on the instructions of the Vice President.

“We learnt that the redeployment of the crack detective was caught in hi-wire intrigues in the Force Headquarters over the $1 million case.

“The IGP was actually not disposed to the release of the DCP. But the panel believes only the DCP could fit into the assignment given to it. No agreement yet on this officer who is rated as incorruptible.”

Responding to a question, the source said: “The panel may have no choice than to report the latest dimension to the request to the VP.”

A police source said: “Well, although the IGP has the final say on redeployment of officers and other ranks, DCP Lafia ran into trouble with some police top shots for probing a syndicate who defrauded a businessman of $1m.

“Some officers had mounted pressure on DCP Lafia to drop the investigation of the $1m. At a point, the recommendation for his promotion to a CP was withdrawn from the Police Service Commission. The same recommendation was endorsed by the IGP.

“I think DCP Lafia stepped on toes over the fraud case. The IGP might not even be in the full picture of what is really happening.”

Businessman Austine Ugochukwu Albert, had petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari over alleged poor handling of a $1 million (N360million) fraud case he lodged with the police.

He said he paid N360 million in exchange for $1 million which he never got.

He suspected compromise, abuse of office and corrupt activities by some officers assigned to investigate how he was swindled of the money.

He blamed some officers in the Inspector-General of Police monitoring unit of compromise.

He alleged that he suspected a corrupt deal of about $200,000 to frustrate his complaint to the police.

He said the officer handling his case was transferred in a suspicious manner at the prompting of one of the influential suspects who defrauded him.

He said he could not understand why the officer was redeployed midway into a crucial investigation in which he had recovered $205,000.

In a petition through his counsel, Ugochukwu Ezekiel, he urged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the IG to return his case to the Force Intelligence Bureau instead of the Monitoring Unit.

He said he paid N360 million with intent to source for $1 million for his business.

But after successfully remitting the N360 million, a group of five suspects involved in the transaction refused to give him the $1 million.

He said: “Surprisingly, after our client paid the money as agreed above, the group, which we now believe is led by one Bakare, disappeared with the money.

“Our client first reported the matter at Area J command of the Nigeria Police Force, Ajah, Lagos State where the suspects made confessional statements that the entire transaction was a fraud, but at this point they all refused to give up their kingpin, Bakare.

“The matter was later transferred to Zone 2 command of the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos on the orders of the Assistant Inspector General of Police who equally ordered that all accounts already frozen by the police pursuant to their investigation activities be unfrozen. Our client was dissatisfied and wrote a petition to the Inspector General of Police.

“Unfortunately, the officers that investigated the matter at Inspector General of Police monitoring unit compromised the matter, refused to arrest the kingpin who had been identified as Bakare.

“They hurriedly charged the matter to a Magistrate Court in Abuja, which to their knowledge, has no jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

“The suspects were subsequently set free on ridiculous bail conditions and this emboldened them as they called our client and demanded that our client should not pursue the matter anymore or he would be eliminated.

“To forestall the materialization of their threat, our client wrote a fresh petition to the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department and the matter was assigned to the Force Intelligence Bureau for investigation.

“On learning of the embarrassing situation, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Inspector General of Police monitoring unit quickly transferred the case file to the Force Intelligence Bureau for a review and unbiased investigation.

“Our client must confess that the Force Intelligence Bureau acted professionally and intelligently and within weeks rounded up the suspects and obtained an order from the Federal High Court to have them detained pending investigation.

“We are aware that the head of Force Intelligence Bureau was offered some huge amount of money as bribe and he turned it down.

“This honest officer was duly commended and recommended by the Inspector General of Police for his honesty and recommended that he be promoted to the office of Commissioner of Police.

“To our client’s utter consternation, our client got information that Bakare was boasting while still in detention that he has offered the money that was rejected by men of Force Intelligence Bureau to some officers in the Monitoring Unit and that the case will not only be taken away from that department but the head of that unit, who he described as very strict, will be removed.

“Our client treated this as the joke of the century and moved on. However, less than 24 hours after our client got the information, the Inspector General of Police sent a signal that the case file be transferred to another unit and that the officer be immediately transferred.”

Efforts made to reach police spokesman, Moshood Jimoh, yesterday night yielded no result.

Although he had called to speak with one of our reporters less than two hours earlier, his line was not going through at about 9 pm.

FG will complete 2nd Niger bridge – Osinbajo

THE Federal Government yesterday gave a fresh commitment to the completion of the second Niger bridge and other ongoing capital projects in the Southeast. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, speaking at Ifitedunu, Anambra State, said President Muhammadu Buhari personally went to went to China to negotiate the loan for the second Niger bridge. Osinbajo spoke at the funeral service of Mrs. Roseline Akabueze, mother of the Director- General of Budget Office, Mr. Ben Akabueze. Responding to the homily given by the Bishop of Awka, Paulinus Eze Okafor during which he raised the issues of marginalization and restructuring, Osinbajo said: “we have a listening President, and I can assure you that President Muhammadu Buhari is a man who, in his heart, wants to be fair and just. “One of the most important things about the President is that he is a very fair-minded person, and I believe that he loves this State.

“In 2003, when he first ran for office, his running mate then was Senator Chuba Okadibo, an indigene of this state; the second time he ran, his running mate was Chief Edwin Ume-Ezoeke, also an indigene of Anambra State. I think he has a very special affection for this state. “Every time we talk about fairness, we must talk about justice; when we talk about unity, we must talk about justice and I believe that is the fair thing to do. “About the request concerning the second Niger bridge and the east-west road and several of these projects, I want to say that the president himself went to China to negotiate the loan for the second Niger bridge. “Aside from that, the Lagos-Calabar rail line passing through states in this region, the president also, personally, went to negotiate the loan. “I believe that by the grace of God, we would see the completion of all of these projects; even the Onitsha road that you have been complaining about, we will ensure that it is built.”

  • Who will save Buhari and Osinbajo from the Sirens? (1)

If wishes were horses, President Muhammadu Buhari would retain his seat, come 2019, likewise Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. Strike that. Even if failing health incapacitates Buhari, his legacy and dream would live on with a ‘President Yemi Osinbajo’ – while Buhari remains crucial part of the political equation, from the shadows.

The President and Vice President’s groupies excite by such pliant notions of realism or political pragmatism if you like.

This writer belongs to neither camp but he believed and still believes in crucial parts of Buhari and Osinbajo’s ‘Change’ agenda irrespective of the team that implements it.

Despite reservations about the duo’s leadership, Buhari and Osinbajo remain Nigeria’s best attempt at humane leadership, if they could muster the will to institutionalise truly benevolent leadership.

Nigeria should consider it a treat, if by some radical twist of fate, a more promising and younger team emerges on the scene. But the possibility of such younger, promising team fades out in plain sight as the country hastens to 2019 in the absence of credible opposition driven by humane, patriotic ideals.

Thus while it is indeed true that Nigeria may do better than Buhari and Osinbajo, it would be suicidal and quite impractical to ditch them in quest of younger leadership in 2019. Who are the youth? Do they include career aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, or comic relief, Ayodele Fayose? Or is it the ‘almighty’ Senate President, Bukola Saraki? Do these men possess the nerve, wisdom and moral character epitomised by Buhari and Osinbajo?

To the ‘mythical’ cabal allegedly holding Buhari hostage to power, it’s Buhari or Nigeria implodes come 2019. A less scary alternative is for Nigeria to stand by, while they (the cabal) anoint their preferred northern candidate to succeed Buhari, in the event that his health fails him. Let’s hope his health does not fail him as Osinbajo is anathematic to the cabal’s fantasies of power.

Amid the plots and counter-plots, Buhari and Osinbajo suffer the affliction of savage forms. Political apologists comprising mutant aides and associates, like the medieval Sirens, form a thick wall around both men. Like the Sirens, they belt out mellifluous notes of shady intent and ill bliss, luring both men to doom and disrepute.

These political aides, advisors and associates are driven by greed and a curious fear of irrelevance should Buhari and Osinbajo get booted from office hence they do not tell them truths they ought to hear.

Instead, they humour the President and VP with outright lies, honeyed praise and half-truths. The president’s media team for instance, has developed a curious knack for demonising Buhari’s critics and attacking them with puerile ‘facts.’ The media team metamorphoses as you read, into savage and juvenile forms emblematic of the president’s most virulent and often venomous critics. This  tragic alteration of Buhari and Osinbajo’s apologists eventually manifest as dumbing down of presumed intellects and leaders of thought.

Recently, the Special Adviser on Media Affairs, Femi Adesina’s recent spiritualized, damning allegory about the president’s critics. Adesina, in an article titled: ‘PMB and the Descendants of Shimei,’ published on Saturday, July 22, 2017 in The Sun Newspaper, said that Buhari had ended the “dream of the PDP to rule the country for 60 years” and as such PDP members wanted him dead.

He identified PDP members as the descendants of ‘Shimei’ who could “have their heads removed” if not for the kind benevolence of Buhari. The former president of the Nigerian Guild of Editors has certainly evolved from his ‘A new sheriff is in town’ cloying deification of Buhari to more hysterical praise.

The presidential media team’s ripostes range from juvenile retorts to outright prophecies of doom for Mr. President’s critics. Sometimes, they channel their inner comedian and utter ridiculous counters to constructive criticism of the presidency’s perceived missteps.

For instance, Senior Special Assistant to the president on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, recently issued what he considered a brilliant retort to Buhari’s critics, claiming the president couldn’t resume work after his medical tourism abroad because his office was ravaged by rodents. Predictably, local and international media including the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), mocked the presidency and the country over Garba’s gaffe.

“Following the three months period of disuse, rodents have caused a lot of damage to the furniture and the air conditioning units,” he told a local medium. Garba conveniently forgot the fact that his principal’s office initially budgeted an outrageous sum of N1.9 billion, according to The Punch newspaper investigations, on clearing of sewage and fumigation in the 2017 fiscal year.

They also forget that despite the confidence inspired by the Buhari/Osinbajo leadership, it is apparent that the All Progressives Congress (APC), the platform by which they emerged, does not wish Nigerians well.

The presidency’s apologists should understand that Nigerians do not confuse the APC’s tiresome platitudes for an abiding love for Nigeria. By the antics of APC public officers, it is apparent that they only wish Nigeria prospers in order to milk her. The APC, like its predecessor, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) does not want the Nigerian citizenry to prosper.

Consider goings on in the National Assembly for instance; legislators carry on insensate to the miseries of the electorate they claim to represent. Lawmakers bicker, fight and conspire in pursuit of selfish interests, at the expense of citizenry.

Recently, senators protested late payment of salaries even as state pensioners, mostly senior citizenry who voted them into power, wither away in an endless wait for their gratuities every year and as you read.

It was hardly surprising that they drew the ire of Prof. Itse Sagay, foremost lawyer and presidential adviser on anti-corruption. Sagay recently stated that a Nigerian senator earns N29 million in monthly pay, in a speech he delivered at the Nigerian Society of International Law public lecture in Lagos. “From the information I have gathered, a Nigerian Senator earns about N29 million a month and over N3 billion a year,” he said.

    “Basic salary N2,484,245.50; hardship allowance, 1,242, 122.70; constituency allowance N4, 968, 509.00; furniture allowance N7, 452, 736.50; newspaper allowance N1, 242, 122.70.

“Wardrobe allowance N621,061.37; recess allowance N248, 424.55; accommodation 4,968,509.00; utilities N828,081.83; domestic staff N1,863,184.12; entertainment N828,081.83; personal assistant N621,061.37; vehicle maintenance allowance N1,863,184.12; leave allowance N248,424.55; severance gratuity N7, 425,736.50; and motor vehicle allowance N9, 936,982.00,” Prof. Sagay added.

Sagay subsequently challenged the Senate to prove him wrong by publishing what the lawmakers collect as salaries and wages.

But rather than respond in a civil manner, the Senate accused Sagay of hate speech, claiming he is a “senile, jaded, rustic and outdated Professor of Law” who may be “under influence of substance.”

The Senate’s response was of course crafted by kindred spirits to APC media and political apologists. It is instructive to note that these apologists, mostly media aides and political associates, were erstwhile regarded as leaders of thought in their respective fields. They were believed to of superior intellect, refinement and unimpeachable candour.

But they offer themselves for deployment in ways that contradict everything they ought to stand for.

School feeding addresses Nigeria’s nutritional challenges – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said on Monday that one of the reasons the present administration’s Homegrown School Feeding Programme was conceived was to address problems of malnutrition, especially among primary school pupils.

Osinbajo stated this while receiving a delegation of Nigerian human nutritionists led by the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to Osinbajo, the Federal Government will be ready to collaborate with states where nutrition issues are most urgent in prioritising the implementation of the school feeding programme.

Already, 14 states are benefiting from the programme across the country, with almost three million pupils being fed daily.

The vice president said the government would consider inaugurating the National Council on Nutrition.

He, however, urged the experts to come up with an action plan to effectively address the malnutrition challenges in the country.

Abubakar, who came with leaders of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, had detailed the concerns of Nigerian professional human nutritionists on malnutrition challenges and how Nigeria was faring on the global nutrition targets.

The delegation urged the federal government to inaugurate a National Council on Nutrition to address the situation.

  • Osinbajo to open Africa tax parley

Osinbajo to open Africa tax parley

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will today open the third  International Conference on Tax in Africa (ICTA) in Abuja.

The ICTA’s flagship conference of the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF), with the theme: “Building Strong Domestic Tax Regimes in Africa: Strengthening VAT, PIT and CIT” will end on Friday.

The conference will also celebrate and recognise the six African experts selected to serve on the United Nations Committee of Experts on International Cooperation in Tax Matters.     Five of the six members are from ATAF member countries and two of these are on the ATAF Council. They include Mr. Tunde Fowler (Nigeria), Chairperson of the ATAF Council; and Mrs Elfrieda Stewart Tamba (Liberia).          Thier membership of the UN Committee of Experts on International Cooperation in Tax Matters  is regarded as an acknowledgement of the sterling work of ATAF in transforming taxation in Africa and the expertise within its ranks.

To end poverty and hunger by 2030, the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are premised on strategies that build economic growth to address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection.          Tax revenue, is therefore viewed as the main enabler for achieving these goals.

The African Union has set Agenda 2063 to build “an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in international arena.”                                             To fulfil this vision, Agenda 2063 talks of the need for inclusive growth and sustainable development as well as good governance, democracy, respect for human rights, justice and the rule of law. To bring this agenda into fruition, domestic resource mobilisation takes a central role, as donor fatigue is now only too evident.

African countries are signatories to both these ambitious milestones. For ATAF, continent meeting both these agendas will, largely hinge on effective domestic resource mobilisation (DRM) or strengthening domestic tax regimes in every African country. In light of this, both the Forum’s Council as well as it’s General Assembly have given the directive for a strong focus on domestic taxes, hence the theme for ICTA 2017.

The Conference is focusing on specific domestic taxes including VAT, Personal Income Tax (PIT) and Corporate Income Tax (CIT) due to their potential contribution and the underlying risks that are likely to undermine the revenue take.

Value Added Tax (VAT) is administered in 44 of the 54 African countries and is seen as the tax of the future as it has a broad base and therefore, needs review of processes for effectiveness and efficiency in its administrations.

Corporate Income Tax (CIT) is in the spotlight as more manufacturing industries take root in the continent. Similarly, there is a growing service sector constituting the financial, telecommunication and real estate.

Personal Income Tax derived from individuals such as employee PAYE, other withholding tax schemes and High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI) are also key contributors to domestic revenue.

FG will provide basic infrastructure for Nigerians – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said on Friday the Federal Government planned to use Public- Private- Partnership (PPP) to provide basic infrastructure to the people.

He stated this at the launch of the PPP Disclosure Web Portal sponsored by World Bank and the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC).

Osinbajo, who was represented by the Minister of State, Power, Works and Housing, Suleiman Hassan, emphasised the role of the private sector in the provision of basic infrastructure for Nigerians.

The PPP Disclosure Web Portal encourages proactive disclosure of contract agreement between government and its contractors on PPP projects.

The portal will make available to citizens and relevant stakeholders, information such as project title, type, government agency responsible, name of private concessionaire, contract sum and regular progress report on projects.

The vice president said the provision of quality infrastructure remained a huge stumbling block to the country’s economic growth, hence the need to seek private sector intervention.
