Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the weekend assured Nigeria investors of bright and robust economy ahead.

He applauded investors for their resilience despite the current challenges facing the Nigerian economy, assuring them of better years ahead.

Osinbajo, who spoke at the commissioning of N5.6 billion water project built by Nestlé Nigeria Plc in Abaji, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, said the Federal Government was committed and determined to build synergy with the private sector to diversify the economy from its present over -dependence on the oil sector to manufacturing and agriculture.

He said the 2016 budget clearly showed a road map for business expansion and growth with the involvement of the organized private sector for diversification of the economy.

Osinbajo said government would encourage the private sector to excel by providing an enabling macroeconomic environment and the necessary infrastructure that will drive business growth through public private partnership (PPP).

The vice president added that Nigeria is increasingly becoming the destination for foreign investors with expansion of businesses.

According to him, the attraction of foreign investors to the country alluded to the fact that Nigeria was not just known for its economic viability and market but its diversity in terms of human resources and natural endowment.

Pipeline vandals are like terrorists –Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday described pipeline vandals in the Niger Delta as ‘terrorists’, who should be ‘severely dealt with’ and not tolerated.

The vice president made the comment in Warri after visiting the strategic gas pipeline at Forcados export terminal in Burutu council area of Delta State.

Professor Osinbajo, who advocated that all Nigerians must support President Muhammadu Buhari’s resolve to give the Boko Haram treatment to oil and gas facilities and pipelines vandals, noted that the January 14, 2016, sabotage on the pipeline at Forcados has resulted to the unprecedented power cuts that had been experienced in recent times.

“As you know, pipelines vandals are probably as bad as any type of terrorists or saboteurs and the danger posed to lives caused by pipelines vandals. All of us must agree with the president that the vandals must be treated with the most severe manner and should not be tolerated at all.

“So, I agree entirely that pipelines vandals should not be tolerated under no circumstances.

“Aside from the gas problem, there is also the problem of losing thousands of barrels of production. We are not able to produce as much as we ought to. About 250,000 barrels are lost per day. We are losing large sums of money daily. We look for alternative, while we look to repair the pipelines.

“We would have to deploy even sophisticated weapons to ensure we contain the vandalism, overhaul security and permanent pipeline security force might also be an option to look at.

“The damage done has led to low supply of gas and most of the power plants are not functioning at maximum capacity,” Osinbajo said.

Delta State governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, who was on the Vice President’s entourage to the site, said works were on with the repairs, which completion date had been tentatively put to the end of May this year.

Osinbajo, others hail Aisha Buhari’s book

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday presided over the presentation of a book, The Essential of Beauty Therapy,” by wife of the President, Aisha Buhari.

He and others at the event hailed the book.

The proceeds from sale of the book, selling for N20,000 per copy, Aisha Buhari said, would be channelled to assist victims of the Boko Haram insurgency.

The Vice President, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari as special guest of honour, said he could not be expected to donate much to the launching  because he was on half salary and that Buhari was strict on money matters.

He said: “The President and I are on half salaries. The President is strict on money issues. So, don’t expect me to make a large donation.”

Describing the book presentation as important, he observed that it was “not just a book, but it is an instructional manual. There is a lot of technical material but it’s helpful.”

According to him, the presentation of the book highlighted the importance of the girl-child education, noting that if the wife of the President had not got the opportunity to go to school, she would not have been able to write the book and teach others.

“It emphasises the importance of education. Her desire to dedicate the proceeds of the presentation to the victims of insurgency and particularly the families of the Chibok girls is commendable,”he added

Stressing that the day commemorated the second anniversary of the abduction of the Chibok girls, Osinbajo promised that the girls were alive and would be brought back to their families.

Noting that the timing of the presentation was apt, he said: “I am pleased to be associated with it.”

Mrs. Buhari said her decision to present the book was to contribute to the support of victims of insurgency, particularly mothers and children as well as malnourished children across the nation.

Chairman of the occasion and All Progressives Congress (APC) National leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who was represented by his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, observed that the vast potential of the beauty industry had not been tapped in Nigeria.

Noting that the industry generates $19 billion annually to the United States, he called for the training and certification of beauty salon operators in the country.

He also called for establishment of vocational schools in partnership with beauty products in the country.

“Nigeria needs more women to expand the frontier of beauty therapy,” he added

Senator Daisy Danjuma was the chief launcher of the book.

  • Chibok girls constantly on Buhari’s mind, says Osinbajo

Chibok girls constantly on Buhari’s mind, says Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday cautioned against cynicism and hopelessness about the recovery of the 217 Chibok girls abducted by Boko Haram.

According to him, their recovery is uppermost in the mind of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He spoke at a one-day Roundtable on Vulnerable People in Insurgency and other conflicts in Nigeria, organised by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

He said: “At any security council meeting that I have attended, the President in particular has always been concerned about the question of Chibok girls in particular. Of course it comes out of ensuring that apart from the international importance attached to it, he reflects on the abduction as if any of the girls is one of his own”.

National Security Adviser Maj.-Gen. Babagana Moguno also said: “Government is also committed to locating the whereabouts of the Chibok girls with a view to rescuing them. The issue has been at the top of the agenda during national council meetings. Moreover, the security agencies have stepped up their search and rescue activities. For instance, in the last one month over 3000 hostages have been rescued by the armed forces in their counter-insurgency operations in the North East,” he said.

Others at the event include Minister of Interior, Lt-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazzau (rtd), the Executive Secretary, Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC), Air Commodore Yusuf Anas (rtd), representatives of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Chief of Army Staff (COAS), and Ambassadors of US, UK and France among others.

Describing as significant the day set aside to mark the anniversary of the kidnap of 217 Chibok girls in Borno State by Boko Haram terrorists, Vice President Osinbajo said: “It brings to fore some critical issues on the handling of the plight of vulnerable people notably the abduction of Chibok girls and the killings of Buni Yadi boys as well as the recent kidnap of three girls in Ikorodu, Lagos in a non-confict area”.

Osinbajo expressed government’s appreciation to local NGOs, CSOs and international partners and sought their continued collaboration and assistance in further addressing issues around the wellbeing of victims and the task of rebuilding the North East areas affected by insurgency.

According to him: “Interconnectivity of many issues like poverty, corruption and lack of education exposes the fact of vulnerability especially of women and girls in our society”, emphasizing that “the question of poverty and how poverty generally as an overarching issue exposes state system and institutions of state and make them impossible to solve most problems without addressing the fundamental questions first.

“There is a sense in which we must pay attention to how we design government programmes, how we plan budgets, so that we take into account the great poverty of our people”, he said.

He said that is why the Federal Government voted N500 billion in this year’s budget for five different social intervention programmes including conditional cash transfer to the poorest.

Osinbajo said the present level of systemic corruption in the country has made it difficult to deliver service to the people because funds meant for infrastructure and social upliftment of the people are diverted.

He said the society has to deal with the corruption saying “I believe we must deal with corruption, it is at the heart of what has gone wrong in this society. We must deal with not only individuals, but with corruption in a systemic fashion”, he said.

At the Roundtable, one of the female survivors of the Buni Yadi attack in Yobe State, Fatima Alhassan, also spoke about what happened the day Boko Haram attacked the school.

Minister of the Environment and Moderator of the programme, Mrs. Amina Mohammed, said: “It will never be enough until the girls come back. As a mother of four, I am hopeful that the girls will be rescued.”

The NSA added that the purpose of the roundtable was to discuss the plight of the most vulnerable citizens, devise preventive measures to avoid conflicts and find ways to mitigate the suffering of victims during and after conflicts.

Monguno was represented by the Special Adviser on Economic Intelligence (ONSA), Mr. Remi Oyewunmi, who added: “No other issue in Nigeria’s recent history has exposed the country to the international spotlight as the abduction of the Chibok girls, prompting righteous indignation across the world”.

He said there is massive increase in the use of children as suicide bombers by the Boko Haram terrorists.

“Like the rest of the world, the most vulnerable people during conflicts in Nigeria are usually women and children as exemplified by their preponderance  among the teeming mass of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), particularly in the North East, victimes of the Boko Haram insurgency. According to reports by security agencies, there has been an increase in the use of children as suicide bombers.”

  • Fed Govt set to empower one million women, says Osinbajo

•President commiserates with Kano market’s victims

The Federal Government has set aside a substantial amount of money in the 2016 budget to empower one million women through disbursement of loans.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who said this in Kano yesterday, added that investment in women would have a positive impact on the country’s growth and their families.

He was in the Northern commercial city on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari to commiserate with the government and traders, who lost goods worth trillions of naira in a fire, which engulfed Abubakar Rimi market in Sabon Gari.

Osinbajo, who said the women would use the loans to start whatever business they desire, added the President was determined to surmount the economic challenges facing Nigerians.

He assured the citizens that the nation’s lingering fuel scarcity and other hardships would soon be a thing of the past.

The vice president said: “I want to assure you that better days are coming. There are myriad of problems inherited by the incumbent administration and we are not only determined, but committed to tackle and solve them.

“President Buhari appreciates the pains Nigerians are feeling now, he knows what is going on and I want you to know and we know that he is an honest man, who is determined to make sure that the common man in this country enjoys the dividends of democracy.

‘’I will like us to join hands together with the governors and the government, so that we can all prosper and work diligently for the country’s development. President Buhari-led administration is determined to induce a change in the nation’s circumstances.”

‘’I am here to commiserate with the market men and women, whose goods were recently consumed by a fire outbreak in Abubakar Rimi market in Sabon Gari. The market is the largest in West Africa, which is located where predominantly non-indigenes reside. But I learnt that in Kano, we have no non-indigenes, as everybody is a citizen, where people converge from here and there.’’

He added: “I commend Governor Ganduje for the massive structure being embarked upon by his government in rebuilding the market, which I hope would be a modern one that could be befitting and beneficiary.’’

Osinbajo laid the foundation of projects to be executed by the Ganduje-led administration, as well as inaugurated an empowerment involving 500 women and 60 waste disposal tricycles.

The governor noted that when the fire started, the government searched for firefighting vehicles, but learnt that they had gone for service, a situation which, he said, frustrated the efforts of putting off the fire.

  • VP, Ambode, Okorocha, proffer solution to Nigeria’s economic woes

VP, Ambode, Okorocha, proffer solution to Nigeria’s economic woes

Vice President Yemi Osibanjo, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, his Imo State counterpart, Rochas Okorocha and other dignitaries have identified measures to solve the economic challenges in the country.

They spoke Thursday at the maiden edition of  National Forum on Economy organised by Vintage Press Limited, publishers of The Nation Newspapers, held at Lagos Airport Hotel.
Osibanjo in his keynote address blamed the nation’s economic challenges on oil dependence and corruption saying that the time has come for the country to look beyond oil and celebrate integrity over corruption.
According to him, “It is pathetic that a nation with over 170 million people benchmarked its budget on the price of oil. We must look beyond oil because it disturbs us from looking to other sector. In order to move the country forward, we must reduce the FG and state dependence on sharing revenue made from oil sales.”
He said government is fully aware of the overwhelming challenges confronting Nigerians, assuring that ongoing reforms at various sector is a pointer to the fact that the situation will soon be a thing of the past.
“The foundation for a strong economy demands that we have appropriate fiscal policies that will help the country that is arising from a very low rate of VAT and a low taxpayer’s base. We are focusing on increasing the country’s taxpayers base. We are committed to expanding the tax net.
“At the federal level, the implementation of the country’s 2016 budget will stimulate the economy rather than impose undue austerity on the citizens. For instance, 30 percent of the country’s budget has been earmarked for capital expenditure.
“Non-oil sources comprising company income tax, VAT and others are expected to contribute N1.5 trillion which is more than the estimated revenue from oil. This is unprecedented in the history of the country.”
Vice President said there is urgent need for the country to take full advantage of the oil sector, adding that rather than extract and exporting, the country must take full advantage of the oil sector and entire value chain.
He explained that government would soon commence work on the Lagos-Kano and Lagos-Calabar rail routes, as well as 31 major road projects across the country, just as he stressed the commitment of the current administration to give a quantum leap to infrastructural development.

He said the governments this year will focus on key areas such as oil and gas Agriculture, social investment among others to tackle the situation.
Governor Ambode in his remark said the nation’s economy was at a critical threshold and thus, will require its leaders to think outside the box and come up with creative innovations that will trigger economic growth nationwide.
He lamented the fact that previous governments at the federal level failed to take advantage of the oil boom to grow other sectors of the economy, saying that the fall in price in the international oil market coupled with many years of corruption has made the economy vulnerable.
“It is very unfortunate that we wasted the golden opportunity to deploy the trillions of dollars earned from our oil exports to develop the critical sectors of the economy including power, agriculture, industries, solid minerals, transportation infrastructure among others.  No doubt, if we had done the right thing as some other oil producing countries did, keeping in mind that crude oil is a finite resource, we would not be experiencing the devastating effect of oil price crash on the scale we are experiencing it now.

“We are now being forced to do, with pains, what we should have done with ease years ago. The task of charting a new direction for the economy is not going to be a tea party. Various policy options must be identified and assessed on the basis of our current situation and needs.  Moving our economy forward requires thinking outside the box and doing things differently. We need creativity, innovation and the courage to take difficult and tough decisions.

“The leadership of the country at national and state levels must have the courage to take tough decisions and make sacrifices in the near term which will, in the long run, make our economy stronger and sustainable and, consequently result in prosperity across all regions of Nigeria,” he said.

Recommending strategies to improve the economy, Governor Ambode said that the nation must begin to explore and expand the opportunities that abound in inter-State relations and strengthen regional competitiveness by maximizing economies of scale, regional optimization of assets and endowments and mitigation of afflictions and natural disasters.

He listed other viable areas for inter-State collaboration to include transport infrastructure to facilitate market linkages, education, market development, human capacity building, security and intelligence sharing, saying that it was high time to move away from an oil driven economy.

“Prior to the oil boom era, Agriculture was the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy and contributed about 65 per cent to the country’s GDP and represented close to 70 per cent of total exports. Through farming, Nigeria was able to feed its population while major cash crops were exported to earn foreign exchange.

“From the cocoa and rubber plantations in the West, the groundnut pyramids and cotton in the north, to palm oil in the east; each region was identified by its economic areas of comparative advantage which were collectively harnessed towards ensuring food security and inclusive growth across the country.

“Given our current economic challenge, I believe it is time we take a cue from our old ‘playbook’ for a viable ‘game plan’ to revive our national economy. States and regions must once again begin to leverage on their respective areas of comparative advantage by establishing partnerships towards establishing inter-State or inter-regional commodity value chain. We must re-start inter-state/regional cooperation,” he said.

Governor Ambode said that Lagos has already taken the bull by the horn with its recent partnership with Kebbi State aimed at developing a commodity value chain that will see the local production of 70 per cent of Nigeria’s rice needs with a multiplier effect that will ensure job creation, the development of ancillary industries as well as strengthen the Naira.

The Governor however added that for regional integration to thrive a functional modern rail and water transportation system must be in place, noting that movement of goods, materials and people by road was not only inefficient but fraught with risks, safety hazards and detrimental to the roads.

Earlier in his opening remarks, Chairman of Vintage Press Limited, publishers of The Nation Newspaper, Wale Edun said the forum was put together not just to lament the challenges facing the country but for government and members of the critical sectors of the economy to dialogues and chart a way out.
