Law to protect children from online violence underway, says Rep Osoba

A law to protect children from online violence is underway following the passage of a bill for second reading on by the House of Representatives on Thursday.

Titled, “A bill for an act to provide for the enactment of child online access protection bill, 2023 and other issues of online violence against the Nigerian child,” the proposed law seeks among others to secure the digital future of Nigeria’s youth and ensure a safer online environment.

Leading the debate on the bill on the floor of the House at Thursday’s plenary, sponsor of the bill and member representing Abeokuta North/Obafemi-Owode/Odeda Federal Constituency, Ogun State, Olumide Osoba, expressed concern over the capacity of unstrained internet to damage the health of the Nigerian child.

Addressing his colleagues, the lawmaker said, “I stand before you today not just as a legislator but as a parent deeply concerned about the safety of our children in the digital age. In the face of technological advancements, our children encounter unprecedented risks online. The Child Online Access Protection Bill (2023), which I sponsor, is a pivotal initiative to shield the Nigerian child from the perils of online violence and exploitation.

“Raising our children in this era of the internet has become an enduring task. The threat of violence has escalated, affecting our children physically, sexually, and psychologically. While we acknowledge the significance of the Nigeria Data Protection Act signed into law on June 12, 2023, it is crucial to recognize the specific vulnerabilities children face in the digital space.”

According to him, “The internet has become a breeding ground for threats to our children, and the absence of mandates to sensitize and enlighten parents, government, and the public on the alarming increase in child abuse due to online activities calls for a robust legislative intervention. We cannot afford to underestimate the impact of the internet on our children.

“Every child has the right to be protected from abuse, exploitation, and violence stemming from cyberbullying, cyber-extortion, identity theft, drug trafficking, phishing, and other forms of online abuse. Our child protection systems must be extensive and robust, ensuring the well-being and safety of our children.”

Highlighting the importance of synergy to build support for the bill, Mr Osoba noted that the bill “Necessitates a collaborative effort from stakeholders, including legislators, clergymen, parents, the Police Force, legal aid, births and death registry, judiciary, media, social welfare offices, and internet service providers. Together, we must develop a comprehensive framework through legislation, policy, and institutional context to shield our children from online malaise.

“This bill proposes a framework to prevent and address harms caused by serious online abuse or illegal and restricted online content. It emphasizes the importance of reporting incidents promptly and highlights the steps for addressing various types of online abuse. Additionally, it outlines fines, imprisonment, and other penalties to discourage online aggression and violence.

“This bill mandates internet service providers to block access to materials depicting violent conduct, regulate illegal/restricted content irrespective of the host, and remove intimate images and videos shared online that negatively impact children.”

Osoba, who chairs the House Committee on Justice further remined his colleagues not to forget that “As representatives of the people, as parents and as guardians of the future, we bear a collective responsibility to protect our children/citizens. The Child Online Access Protection Bill is a pivotal step towards ensuring a safer digital future for Nigeria’s youth.”

Following the adoption of the bill for second reading, Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu who presided over plenary session in the absence of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, referred the bill to the Committee on Judiciary for consideration.

  • How Afenifere can survive, by Osoba

Former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba has reflected on the protracted crisis in Afenofere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, urging its chieftains to close ranks.

The veteran journalist lamented that the organisation has closed its eyes to reforms which can foster dynamism and foster a sense of participation.

The former governor, who blamed the chieftains for the protracted crisis that has enveloped the group, said the solution is attainable.

Aremo Osoba also wondered why Afenifere lacked succession pattern, a constitution and drive for youth inclusion and participation, which are critical to its solidification and survival.

He told reporters in Lagos that Afenifere had a good vision which can continuously be realised in the interest of Yoruba race.

The leadership of the umbrella body has split, with two elders, Pa Rueben Fasoranti and Senator Ayo Fasanmi, claiming to be leader. Fasoranti, former old Ondo State Finance Commissioner and Fasanmi, President of the defunct Action Group (AG) Youth Association, joined the political family in 1951. They were loyal to the former leader, Second Republic Senator Abraham Adesanya.

Efforts to bring the two camps together by the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), led by Olawale Oshun, at a meeting in the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Conference Hall, Ibadan nine years ago collapsed. Since then, there has been no renewal of reconciliation.

Two years ago, Fasoranti resigned as leader, alleging that members of the group lacked discipline. He complained that younger elements were not listening to the wise counsel of elders.

However, he was persuaded to rescind his decision to leave the apex leadership to avoid the effects his departure may have on the organisation.

In recent times, politics has further polarised the fold. While a section of the group has been suporting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) since 2015, another section has teamed up with the All Progressives Congress (APC). Those suporting APC alleged that those suporting the PDP have derailed from the progressive ideology.

Osoba said: “The future of Afenifere is in the hand of God and the God of Yoruba will definitely not abandon His own. Our leaders, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Adekunle Ajasin, Chief Adesanya and Chief Bola Ige, will not die in vain.

“All of us must take the blame. We don’t have succession plan. We waste our time on acrimony. Up to now, we don’t have Afenifere constitution.”

The octogenarian politician traced the crisis rocking Afenifere to the mismanagement of the presidential nomination of the now weakened Alliance for Democracy (AD) at D’Rovans Hotel, Ibadan in 1999 and the deep seated rift between the late Chief Olawale Dawodu and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the Lagos chapter.

Osoba lamented the weakness of the crisis resolution mechanism in the organisation and lack of youth enlistment in its structures and propagation of its vision and goals.

He added: “They claim to be Afenifere. No youth is with them.”

  • Why two-party system is better for Nigeria, by Osoba

Veteran journalist and two-time governor of Ogun State Aremo Olusegun Osoba is 80. His memoir, ‘Battlelines: Adventures in Journalism and Politcs,’ will be presented in Lagos next Monday. The eminent politician spoke with reporters on the journey so far, his foray into journalism and politics, the controversial pact between former Southwest Alliance for Democracy (AD) governors and then President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003, Afenifere crisis and the battle for restructuring. Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU was there.

How do you feel celebrating 80?

I feel the same; I feel elated. I thank the Almighty God who has kept me alive up to now. I had major medical challenges recently; two years ago, that could have taken my life. I survived major assassination attempts on my life. That I have been able to reach the age of 80 is through the immense grace of God. That is why every morning, I count it as an extra day and I do thanksgiving everyday.

There were many occupations when you were growing up, why did you choose journalism?

No accident. I was to read law. My closest teacher in school, Chief Oshunneye, wasted me to read law. He was even furious that I decided to go into journalism because I had an admission to study law at the University of Lagos. But, Alhaji Babatunde Jose persuaded me to jettison the idea of reading law and come to journalism, although in my school days, I was a regular writer in the school magazine at the Methodist Boys High School, Lagos.

At the time you chose journalism, what was the attraction?

The attraction was the challenge. A good journalist faces challenges every day. Journalism is adventurous. Journalism is educative. You learn every day. Journalism gives you exposure. And for somebody who is street wise like me, journalism id a great profession. You have the ability and training to relate with all sectors of society; the great people like the Prime Minister of the country, parliamentarians. At the same time, you relate with petty thieves. At a time I was covering little crimes. You must be comfortable with all sectors of the society. It is a great training ground that helped me in my years as a politician. It trains you to be a leader. It trains you to be objective. Journalism trains you to accept other people’s opinions because a lot of times we public articles and stories that we disagree totally with. But, as a journalist, yours is to inform the public and let the public make their judgment.

How did you break the news of the assassination of the Prime Minister, Balewa?

The details are in my book. I don’t want to be repeating it. People think the assassination of the prime minister was perhaps the only major story that I did. I did many exclusives. I will give you an example. A Mercedes benz. It became controversial. Gbolabo Ogunsanwo and I covered the exclusive story. I had many exclusive stories on the civil war. Even, in my later years, when I got to the Herald, the assassination of Gen. Murtala Mohammed and the capture of Dimka that held the country to ransom. I was there and I had full details of what transpired. The details are in my book. When Col. Taiwo was killed, I was the one with the then Secretary to Kwara State Government, who went and discovered the body of Col. Taiwo on the way to Offa. The issue of Shugaba who was taken away and thrown like a stone across the border, we reported it. He was the Majority Leader in the Borno State House of Assembly. It was another landmark. The impeachment of Balarabe Musa, I was there. I can go on and on about the exclusive stories I covered. But, there have been too much emphasis on Tafawa Balewa, although it was my major beginning that threw me to the world of fame.

You said you survived many assassinations in your life. Could you give us an insight into all these?

You see, some of our people who I will call vicious characters; and I will give you examples. They are all in my book. I gave them a piece of my mind in it. Wale Oshun, who wrote a book, ‘Clapping with one hand,’ and in the book created the impression as if I was nobody in the struggle. And Okunrounu who for years, because he wants to be governor of Ogun State, see be as an Abacha turn-coat. I have had occasions to challenge them if any of them suffered as I suffered, then, they have the right to insult me. But, if they didn’t go all that I went through, they should keep their mouth shut for ever and ever. Everything is in this book. I want them to reply in details the way I had put documentations in this book; the way I had put witnesses. I was the first to be arrested after the formation of NADECO by Abacha, and I was taken to Kam Salem House. I mentioned Oba Akiolu there, who was the Commissioner of Police who gave me his office to use because I was sleeping in a big hall infested with rats. The rats were running around all night. I was the first to be arrested. I was the first to be charged to court along with Bola Tinubu, Commodore Dan Seleiman. We were charged before Justice Shonowo as people who formed NADECO. We were to go to jail. Justice Shonowo ruled on the issue. When we were not given bail, Justice Belgore, who was the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, intervened and gave us bail. I went through that. I was detained in Kam Salem House. After all these tribulations, I was transferred to Alagbon in the open compound at six o clock in the morning. We resumed; myself, Bola Tinubu, Dan Suleiman and others who were taken to Alagbon.

Subsequently, the attempt on my life started on August 23, 1994. When Abiola had returned and had been arrested, we went to celebrate his first birthday in detention. They came to my house. They had attempted to set Dan Suleiman’s house on fire on 22nd. There was an attempt to set Gani Fawehinmi’s Chambers on fire on 22nd. On the night of 23rd, when all these attempts on Dan Suleiman had accured, I checked out of my house; I went into hiding. I was lucky. They came to my house on August 23 purposely, perhaps, to kill me. I was not home. They gained access without any key. They had security key. My SSS attached to me as a former governor, Stephen Itokpa, I think from Benue, didn’t knows that the security people were the ones that came to invade the house. He engaged them in a shoot out. When he exhausted his ammunition, he had to scale the wall. That was the first attempt on my life in 1994. The rest I didn’t know until Rogers came to give evidence in court  and revealed all that had transpired.

The second attempt was September 1995, when they attempted to set my house on fire in Abeokuta. I don’t sleep early. I just heard a heavy spark. The smoke engulfed the entire room. They are all in my book. I had to call out. The house went on fire. That was the third. The fourth was Roger’s evidence in court that they were sent out to go and kill Adesanya, Alex Ibru, Phobeni, and Bola Ige. These are records in court. He said they stayed in front of my house for a whole day. I did not come out. The second time, they followed me up to the Shagamu Inter-change road. They wanted to get to a quiet place. At that time, there was no traffic jam. I was going to Abeokuta. But, fortunately for me, the military boys knew me and recognised me, even from Alamala, Abeokuta. They waved e on. The few minutes they spent there, he said in evidence that they could not catch up to meet me. Hence, I  escaped an attempted assassination. When Wale Oshun and Okunrounmu start talking, I look at them as small boys in the struggle. They didn’t go through the kind of things I went through. They should keep their mouths shut.

How influential on you was Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the man who described you and your friends, Peter Ajayi and Felix Adenaike, as the three musketeers?

I have said, and nobody has ever controverted it, that the three of us were the youngest closest people to Awolowo. I have repeated this over and over, that among those closest to Awolowo who are still living that I can count as my senior, are Lateef Jakande and Ayo Adebanjo. They cannot deny it. And the Awolowo family knows it. We dinned every other day with Papa Awolowo. We got tutelage direct from him. We did out PHD on public life through tutelage; from him. We were extremely close. He made us part of all the UPN organs. There was no organ of UPN that the three of us did not belong to, up to the highest level. I always challenge them too of there is any of them that can produce the kind of photographs that I took with Awolowo, action photographs. In Yola, the day they wanted to deal with Bola Ige. At Ikenne, the last broadcast Awolowo made on 1983 election. I have the action photograph. I have records of all the minutes of meetings of the UPN. So, this book, I want people to react and anybody that will react, I want him to produce documentary evidence. I have documents, not just photographs. If I include the photographs I have, it will be a whole book. It will be an encyclopedia. But, I have restrained myself by not including much document. I have a lot of documents.

How would you describe the impact of your parents and other people on your life?

I thank God. I give the greatest respect to my father, a disciplinarian. My mother was a quiet and reserved person and she taught me how to respect people.

The greatest influence on me again was my uncle, Prophet Joseph Ayodele babalola. People don’t know my background, that I am related to Babalola, the Founder of CAC, the pioneer Pentecostal church in Nigeria. I spent most of my holidays with him. In fact, he was the one who gave me the name, Oluwasegun. My mother had challenges about her early children who didn’t survive. Joseph Babalola said this one is Oluwasegun, God is victorious all over evils, and that this one will survive, and I survived. I thank him. I am now 80. It is in my book. The spiritual aspect of my life I gained from Joseph Babalola. The other side of my life, the rascality, everything I learned from Lagos. I was a member of virtually everything. In 1954, I was a member of Alakoro Boys and Girls Club in Ebute- Ero. You were trained how to be street wise. You were trained to do community service as a member.  My activities were not limited to academics. I was a member of Boys Scout, Red Cross, Debating Society, Yoruba Cultural Group. I had broad education.

    What about Jose?

After my childhood days, and I decided to go into journalism, Alhaji Jose truncated my studying law in 1965. Alhaji Jakande brought the International Press Institute Training from Nairobi to Lagos. And we were the pioneer people that later metamorphosed into the Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos. Expatriates were sent from International Press Institute from abroad. I was in the University of Lagos for a session, where we got Diploma in Journalism. By the time I came out, Alhaji Jose took me to UK to go and do a refresher’s course under the Commonwealth Press Union. I was thrown into the professional hand of Alhaji Babatunde Jose. In Daily Times, I had gone through major course, obtaining Diploma in Journalism. By 1970, I had gone to Indiana University, Bloomington, to do an advance course in journalism. It was like Alhaji Jose was preparing me for so many things to come. People thought I didn’t go to university to take degree. A man who could go to UNILAG, Commonwealth Press Union, Oxford University, Indianan University, whcch was one of the respected Mass Communication departments, and did post-graduate course in Harward University. I was the first Nigerian. What did they do that I have not done? I was part of Nimma, limited to ten to twenty people and you had post-graduate in Harvard.

May be that was why Areoye Oyebola said Jose like you more than him….

Oyebola said I was Jose lag dog and that was why after the crisis in Daily Times, I decided to go to Heralds outside the control of Jose to prove my worth. And if I was a lag dog, a favorite who did not know his left and right, how come that I was successful in Heralds? I am not being immodest. There was no newspaper that I managed and I ever collected subvention from the federal or state government. I managed Herald and made profit. I left Herald. I went to Sketch. I never collected subvention from owner government. I managed Sketch, built a multi-story office, new machine, new equipment, even up to desks and tables. Daily times was dead when I came back as Managing Director. I turned it around. I turned it to profitability and we were paying dividends to shareholders. Would a fool, a man who doesn’t know his left and the right be able to do that; a man they claimed became editor by favouritism? I am proud to say that I am one journalist in Nigeria, who managed three major newspapers and made them profitable, successful and you cannot be profitable, if people don’t buy your paper, if advert don’t come to your paper. I managed newspapers where I paid salaries as at when due, made workers comfortable, gave them car loans. In my time, all those who worked with me in Herald, Sketch and Times will tell you.

Upon reflection, would you now say that two party system is better than the current arrangement?

Of course. It is unfortunate. The tactical mistake Gen. Babangida made on June 12 destroyed his political engineering that he had put on place. That political scientist, Dr. Cookey and Prof. Omoruyi, who headed the Centre for Democratic Studies, their reports led to the creation of the two party system. The two party system put the conservatives on one side and the progressives on the other side. At that time, nobody defected from the SDP and the NRC. NRC was to the right. SDP was to be left. Now, nobody, no matter the problem in the party, crossed from the NRC to the SDP or from the SDP to the NRC because the ideological divide was clear. Kofo Akerele Bucknor became a senatorial candidate with two votes. The primary was through open ballot system. You queue behind the candidates of your choice. What happened? Dr. Wahab Dosunmu, Towry Coker were in the race. Wahab Dosunmu was in the forefront to win. Somehow, there was a disagreement and they boycotted the primary. Kofo stubbornly said she was not going to boycott and she stood. Only two people queued behind her. SDP people said they were not happy the way the national leadership was handling the primary. They were just boycotting. Then, the Chairman, Baba Gana Kingibe upheld the primary. Despite that, Wahab Dosunmu and Towry Coker did not leave the party. At the election, although she was not the person the party wanted, they still voted and she became senator. If we had gone with the two party system, Nigeria would have had a different story today.

There was only a difference of one or two governors between SDP and NRC. In the Senate, it was a difference of one or two senators. It was all spread round the whole country. Those who became governors then were high caliber people-Oyegun was a retired federal permanent secretary. Seidu Bada in Katsina was a retired permanent secretary. Emeka Ezeife was a retired permanent secretary. The late governor of Kaduna, who headed the Essential Commodities, Dabo Lere. Shaaba Lafiagi was the General Manager of Bacita Sugar Company before he became governor. I was the Managing Director of Daily Times. Otedola had been Personal Assistant to Awolowo decades before he became governor. Olumilua had had a successful foreign service career. The governors then were men of caliber who had had varied experiences in life, unlike now that Obasanjo turned the governorship into all comer’s affair.

Was there a pact between AD and Obasanjo in 2003 and did Obasanjo betray AD governors?

That is stating the obvious. It is in my book. Obasanjo hoodwinked all of us. He deceived all of us. He promised true federalism, fiscal responsibility, genuine census. Our leaders thought Obasanjo was a changed person. The pact was that he will do major things to restructure Nigeria. He failed us. we were all part of it. I have no regret we did. I didn’t have a second term. My landmark spread of projects round the whole state is still a benchmark for successive governments. Go to any village in Ogun State, they will tell you what I did for them. Obasanjo truncated my second term. At 80, there are not many of my peers who today God has given the grace to still remain relevant; to be endowed, to go through all kinds of tribulations and survive.

    Afenifere crisis…

Our leaders started he break up of Afenifere with Bola Ige. The D’Rovans’ election was the beginning of the end of Afenifere. The details are in my book. I feel back, even in his grave, Bola Igbe is still being attacked by writing. That hurts people like us. I have challenged the Afenifere elders’ how many yiung people are still with them? How many people are in Afenifere? Who are they handing over to? I am part of the elders now. Our attitudes do not accommodate contrary opinion. I give you an example. When AD was registered, Oyegun was part of us. At a meeting in Kaduna, Oyegun said AD should collaborate with the All Peoples Party (APP), led by Mahmud Waziri. Our leaders lambasted Oyegun and he was kicked out of AD, despite the fact that he suffered during the struggle. Within one year, they later used APP for the presidential election. In the process f maneuvering, they got Falae to contest on the platform of the APP. The elected APP governors were up in arms against us. If they had cooperated, there was no way Obasanjo would have won. Bafarawa in Sokoto, Aliero in Kebbi, Kachalla in Borno, Sani Yerima in Zamfara. Hashidu in Gombe. All the Afenifere destroyed the opportunity we had because the whole country had conceded the presidency to Yoruba.

Look at restructuring. We are all for it. Is there anywhere in the constitution where the president can decree it? I have told them, let’s engage the National Assembly. But, they go to newspapers and shout. When the elders go to the National Assembly and realised what the National Assembly had done and they were waiting for the consideration of State Assemblies, they were surprised. Whether the constitution is perfect or not, we have to engage the National Assembly. Even, if you want a referendum, the National Assembly will have to pass an amendment to cede its power to the referendum. They shout. When election comes, let they tell me one House of Assembly member they produce, one senator that they produce, one House of Representatives member they produce. They can’t emulate Osinbajo, who as Attorney General of Lagos State went to court to fightthe battle for restructuring. And many of them are lawyers. They just stay on the pages of the newspapers.

    envelop as reporter.

Some people said you were a military apologist..

You can’t be an apologist and run a newspaper that will be profitable. Every newspaper has its editorial policy. You must live by it or you leave. There is no newspaper that is totally free. Anybody in Guardian, let him go and write articles demonizing Uhrobo nation, and lets see whether he will survive till the following morning. Anybody in Vanguard, let him go and insult the Itsekiri nation and lets see if he will survive the following day. I told the people at The Nation. You can criticise some policies of APC. But, go and say that APC is a useless party. You will not survive till the following morning. Go and insult Awolowo in The Tribune and see. All of us are under one constraint or the other. No newspaper is totally free. Let The Sun write that Igbos are useless and tell me if he will survive till the following morning. You know the limit of how you can go. I ran Herald, Sketch and Times without collecting subvention from either military or civilian government and I made them profitable. Like the title of Jose’s book, I walked the tight rope. I deserve respect.

  • Osoba to Ogun APC members: don’t vote against Amosun

Former Ogun State Governor Segun Osoba has pleaded with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to put behind them the attack on the party’s campaign rally in Abeokuta, the state capital, and ensure victory for its candidates, including Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

Suspected political thugs believed to have been hired by loyalists of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) governorship candidate and the governor attacked the APC campaign rally in Abeokuta, pelting stones at dignitaries.

Osoba, who expressed sadness that no arrest had been made, said he told the party’s supporters to leave vengeance to God and vote for all APC candidates.

He said: “Ogun State is first in several areas. The leader of the progressives in this country is from that state and it is the home state of the Vice-President. I told the President that I apologised to him and that up till today, nobody has been arrested. I see that as a failure on the part of some elements of the security agencies.

“Actually, the bulk of APC in Ogun State, we are one family. An instruction has gone out that in spite of what has happened, we should vote for APC candidates at all levels and when the result is out, it should reflect that.

“At least, we should respect the Vice-President who is busy preaching welfarism for the down-trodden. I am sure that appropriate action will be taken on that issue later.

“Yesterday (Sunday), I told stakeholders in Ogun State that on no account should anybody vote against Amosun. A governor is a governor and he will be in office till May 29. So, why are we worrying ourselves?

“Amosun is just an individual. I still respect him as my governor up to May 29, this year, and I will not do anything to undermine him as governor.

  • Osoba lashes out at TraderMoni critics

Former Ogun State governor,Chief Olusegun Osoba yesterday hit out at critics of    TraderMoni which is being given out by the federal government to petty traders to aid their means of livelihood .

He said it was wrong of anyone to equate the revolving loan  with bribe for vote.

Some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former President Olusegun Obasanjo had branded the loan a bribe by the  Buhari Administration  to win reelection.

But responding to the allegation at the launch of a book “Nigeria on Firmer Ground, Towards Lasting Peace & Progress,” in Abuja ,Osoba said  such criticism was  nothing but foolery.

The book is the brainchild of the President’s Media Team.

Osoba who was the reviewer of the book said the  government made it clear before its implementation across the country  that the fund was approved by the National Assembly.

He said God “gave us Buhari to restore the years that corruption has eaten deep into our fabrics.’

Quoting the President’s Chief of Staff,Mallam Abba Kyari in one of the sections of the book,Osoba said: “funds that were meant to support our soldiers were diverted; contractors, godfathers and politicians helped themselves to millions and as a result many of those on the frontline and those they were supposed to protect were killed.

“These were all the problems inherited by this administration by those who are seeking to return to power, God forbid

“In the boom years, from 2000 to 2015, almost nothing was saved and almost nothing was invested.

“So, when the oil price crashed in 2016, we had no spare capacity to boost production and check the shock.

“It is my strong belief that God gave us Buhari, a man of towering integrity to restore the years that locust of corruption has eaten deep into our fabrics. May we never go back to those years.”

The people of the  Southwest,he said, “are always with you because your philosophy is same with our political father,  Awolowo whose philosophy is welfarism   and egalitarianism. We will massively support you in Ogun State and Yoruba land in general.”

He said the current  Ogun State Governor  Ibikunle Amosun was conspiring with some people to  frustrate Buhari’s reelection.

Also speaking,All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, said that unlike other past leaders who focused on their friends at the expense of the people, President Buhari is working  for the masses.

Represented by a former commissioner in Lagos State,Mr.Dele Alake, Tinubu said:” People have murmured  that his (Buhari’s) inaugural address statement that “I belong to everybody and belong to nobody” was aimed at me.

“Well, I find that strange indeed as those words were what I wanted him to say and wanted him to be.

“Unlike others whose stated policy is to enrich friends, Buhari took the nobler position that it was better to help the millions of hard working but anonymous common folk instead of maintaining the national economy in the status of a festive party for a select few.

“True to his word, President Buhari has achieved a lot in his time in office despite our strained financial condition due to shrunken oil prices.

“Through focused policies, the Buhari administration has set the foundation for enduring growth of a diversifying economy not unduly reliant on an increasingly unreliable foreign appetite for crude oil.

“Let our economy stand on its own feet and not be overly beholden to motorists in New York City, London or Paris. I believe such sovereign economics are, in the long term, the soundest economics.” he said

He added “The President has managed to return Nigeria to the path of growth. Our foreign exchange reserves have been rebuilt. Inflation has been brought under control and our balance of trade steadily improved.

“These macroeconomic indicators point to an economy that, under the watchful eye of the President, is steadily recovering.

“But we must also recognise that positive economic statistics mean little to ordinary Nigerians striving to put food on their tables.

“Our party, the APC is a party of compassion and progressivism. Despite the relatively meagre revenues of this government compared to prior governments, the Buhari administration set out to do what the other governments cared not to do. That is to give direct care to the nation’s poorest and most put upon citizens.”

The National Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole  accused  Obasanjo of destroying  the Nigeria textile industry during his tenure.

He said that he had no apology to offer those complaining that things are hard in the country, stressing that there must be pain in getting the country back on track.

The former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, who unveiled the book, said that it is a compendium which contains the summary of the activities of the current administration.

Stressing that the easiest thing that doesn’t require intelligence is criticism, he urged critics to get a copy of the book in order to get enlightened.

To Buhari, he said “No Nigerian has the capacity to pull genuine crowd like you.”

According to him, there is need to give the President another four to complete the good work he has started.

Buhari said  his administration is ready to do more by taking Nigeria to the NEXT LEVEL of development, prosperity, peace and stability.

He said :”Coming just a week to the commencement of the 2019 general elections, there is no doubt that today’s event is very significant as the electorate is being offered more insights into the achievements of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration since we came to office in 2015.

“From the accounts of all the earlier speakers and what can be gleaned from the book, supported by verifiable facts and figures on projects and programmes implemented in almost every State of the Federation, it is clear that our administration has delivered substantially on our campaign promises.

“Riding on the wave of the CHANGE Agenda which we anchored on making positive impact in the three priority areas of security, economy and fighting corruption, I am convinced that we have made real progress and we are poised to do more by taking Nigeria to the NEXT LEVEL of development, prosperity, peace and stability.”

He went on :”We are also poised to make life – changing progress in infrastructure, agriculture, social investments, and much more.

“From returning the economy to sustainable growth, degrading Boko Haram terrorists, boldly confronting the monster called corruption, history will remember this Administration as one that did what it promised and charted the path for a future of which we can all be proud.

“Going round the country in the past weeks on our campaign stops, I believe that our message emphasizing the need to stick to the winning team and not risk returning our country to irresponsible leadership, at any level of government, has resonated with the people.

“Their stock-in-trade is the avaricious plunder of our national assets and resources, and ordinary Nigerians are quite aware of their conduct in government.

“Our simple message to the Nigerian electorate is to give us four more years to build and consolidate on the foundations we have painstakingly laid so that we shall all reap the benefits of what we have planted in all sectors of our society.”

He said that the ruling APC government has proved to be better manger of resources.

“We have proved better managers of our national assets and the limited resources available to us than past administrations, and we are committed to entrenching higher levels of accountability and transparency in the years ahead.

“As the nation prepares to give her citizens the opportunity to choose their leaders and representatives in the next few weeks, I urge all Nigerians to exercise their civic duty in an atmosphere of peace and security.”

  • Only fools call TraderMoni vote- buying, says Osoba

A former Ogun State Governor Aremo Segun Osoba on Friday described those saying the TraderMoni programme of the Federal Government amounts to vote-buying as fools.

Osoba spoke at the old Banquet Hall of the State House while reviewing a book “Nigeria on Firmer Ground: Towards lasting peace and progress” put together by the Presidential Media Team.

He said calling a revolving loan given to the market women to aid their petty trading vote buying was nothing but foolery.

According to him, the government had said before its implementation across the country the fund was approved by the National Assembly.

He also described Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, as a conspirator frustrating President Muhammadu Buhari’s return for second term.

According to him, in the 2003 election, the total votes cast for the President was 1.6m while as governors they got a total of about one million.

He said that the court described what happened in Ogun State as criminal.

“It is not my words but that of the court,” he said

In other serious nations, he said former President Olusegun Obasanjo should have been impeached.

He said that the government could not account for over 600,000 votes.

“President Buhari won in 2003. He won in 2007. They rigged it and they cannot rig again.”

  • Abiodun will succeed Amosun, says Osoba

Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Prince Dapo Abiodun is on a campaign tour of the three senatorial districts. At an interactive session with labour leaders in Abeokuta, the state capital, he spoke on the succession battle and his programmes for the Gateway State. Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU reports.

Hope is on the horizon. That was the message that oozed out of the mouth of Prince Dapo Abiodun, governorship candidate of the Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC) to workers during an interactive session with labour leaders at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) secretariat, Abeokuta, the capital.

“My government will bring a relief to workers. I want to emphasise that our party is a progressive one and a progressive family will be anti-labour. We will not disappoint you,” he said.

In Ogun, civil servants, teachers and local government workers are politically conscious. They form a critical voting population which a candidate can only ignore to his peril. They are also crucial to the success of any administration.

The campaign train was actually led to the NLC office on Abiola Way, Abeokuta by the former governor, elder statesman Aremo Olusegun Osoba.

With Abiodun and Osoba were other party leaders and chieftains, including   Abiodun’s running mate, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Director-General (DG), Dapo Abiodun Campaign Organisation (DACO), Prince Segun Adesegun; Dr Femi Majekodunmi, Senator Gbenga Obadara, Senetor Adegbenga Kaka, Pa Mufutau Ajibola, Mr Samuel Aiyedogbon, Abiodun Akinlade, Mr Femi Allen, former Ogun Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr Afolabi Shuaib, Alhaja Faida Akinjide, ex-Ogun Sports Commissioner Afolabi Afuape, House of Assembly Deputy Speaker Kunle Oluomo, Mr Samuel Durojaiye, Mrs Nike Osoba, Mr Femi Olori, and Mr Tunji Akinosi.

Abiodun promised to review the cases of the sacked NLC Chairman, Comrade Akeem Ambali, and 15 members. He also promised to reverse the suspension of 19 Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) officials by the state government two years ago.

The flag bearer promised to preside over an all-inclusive government. The theme of his campaign: ‘Building our future together, was thrilling to workers.   Urging the workers to vote for him, he said their efforts will not be in vain, if elected.

Abiodun said: “Let me highlight here, extracts from our manifesto that are specific to our commitment to improving the welfare of Ogun State workers. They are the  establishment of Ministry of Labour and Productivity to effectively engage workers and improve productivity and welfare; improvement of teachers’ welfare to put them at par with their private sector counterparts; restructuring of the contributory pension scheme and inauguration of State and Local Government Pension Boards; empowerment of and strengthening of the Local Governments so they can carry out their statutory functions; review and restoration of the roles and responsibilities of Public Service as implementation engine of government policies; and continuous capacity building and provision of conducive work environment and tools.”

The flag bearer said his government will also introduce performance-based incentives in public service, prioritize prompt payment of salaries, remittance of global deductions and gratuities for retirees, and develop affordable Labour Estates for workers in different parts of the state.

Abiodun acknowledged the growing cynicism and disbelief about promises made by candidates. He said: “This mistrust is not unexpected, given the experiences of Ogun State workers and the electorate in general over the years. However, in addition to personal values that underpin all my endeavours, I always keep at the back of my mind that if my teacher-parents had not been treated fairly and with dignity by government of their time, I may not be where it has pleased God to place me today, not to talk of vying for the governor of a state. Therefore, I regard my promises as sacred and solemn commitments that must be pursued with sincerity and vigour.”

The flag bearer promised to halt the delay in salary payment. He saod the arrears of salaries will be paid. He also said a government/labour committee will be set up for the periodic review and evaluation of implementation of agreed actions.

He added: “Ogun State is at a critical point in its 43 years of existence. It is time to go to the polls to elect a new governor and I’m hopeful that with the help of God and the overwhelming support of our people, I will have the opportunity to be the fifth democratically elected Governor.

“I will build on the strong foundation and successes of all my predecessors while learning from and avoiding their missteps. The support of Ogun State workers is very crucial in this journey not just because of your numbers, but because of your influence in the society and the credible voice you represent. Therefore, I request and trust I can count on your support and that of your affiliates, friends, associates and families in my quest to be the next Governor of Ogun State on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC).”

Osoba is optimistic that Abiodun will succeed Amosun on May 29. He said  APC will produce a governor that has listening ears.

He added:”We will set up a committee beyond the MOU that was signed today. The committee will comprise of those who have served in various capacities in the state government, look at the monthly internally generated revenue, how much are being owed and other things. We will have a fact – finding committee that will comprise both the government and the workers.

“So, we will engage you, labour unions, so that when Abiodun is sworn in on May 29, he would have the records and hit the ground running.

“Let me remind you, when I assumed office in 1999 as the executive governor of the state, our administration looked at the records we inherited and we engaged in series of discussions with the labour leaders. Through that, we were able to defray outstanding backlogs, though not at once, but in tranches.

“As we did between 1999 and 2003, we will cooperate with workers. We will replicate the same when Abiodun gets into office, beginning from May 29, 2019. I am sure that our party, APC, will win the forthcoming Presidential election. Our governor is of the APC and he should be able to talk to the President and get what is due to the state.

“I want to seize this opportunity to empathize with you on your pains and travails in almost eight years. Soon, a new dawn will set in. I am assuring you, that Dapo Abiodun will neither disappoint nor offend you.”

Osoba said too many political appointees is a waste of money and promised that the APC will not repeat the mistake.

“I am here to testify as the father of Mr Governor and to be his guarantor”, he added.

The NLC Chairman, Comrade Akeem Ambali, described Abiodun as a topmost contender in the governorship contest.

He assured that very soon, there will be a total change that will beckon a new dawn. The governorship election, Ambali said, is a payback time for a new song to be sung in the state.

He added: “The APC government in the state laid us off from active service, our contributory pensions are being withheld, and our promotions are being delayed. These forthcoming general elections are our payback time. We could not imagine that someone could just woke up from sleep and say he has sacked the state workers. March 2 governorship election beckons to sing a new song. “After darkness comes sunshine”.

“Shortly after our sack, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), elders with grey hairs, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, begged those in authorities to reinstate us, but they rebuffed every entreaty.

“We want dialogue with the government from time to time and they should tell us the true position of things.

“In Ogun State, all we need is ring road in Abeokuta, the state capital, to link other parts of the metropolis.

Also, emphasis should be on rural development to stem urban congestion, crimes and others.

“What are the sins of Agbara people in Ogun West district?

Our budget in Ogun State is sophisticated to stimulate economic development and employment generation. What is the government doing about employment generation through Olokola refinery project? Why are our council chairmen and councilors being impoverished through the cut of their salaries and other benefits which is unlike during the immediate past administration of Otunba Gbenga Daniel? What is wrong with sports and tourism sectors?

“The next government in the state should strengthen local government administration so that council chairmen can embark on capital projects.

We want payments of of our cooperative deductions, gratuities and pensions.”

Abiodun later visited Ewekoro Council in Ogun West District. He paid homage to the Onitori of Itori. The monarch, Oba AbdulFatai Akorede Akamo, Olu of Itori, admonished other traditional rulers in the local council to ensure their subjects cast their votes for no other political party than All Progressives Congress (APC).

The monarch who said Amosun has done his best, added that Ogun State needs a governor that will perform beyond peoples’ expectations.

The traditional ruler commended President Muhammad Buhari for all what he has done in Nigeria and Ewekoro local government in particular.

“People call him “Baba go-slow” and he gave them us railway and cargo airport in Ewekoro local government! We want him to remain “go-slow” because he is nice to us Ogun state. Slow and steady wins the race!”

In his response, Abiodun assured the people of Itori and Oluke-Orile, both in Ewekoro local government, that Dangote Cement factory will return to the area and commence work.

He said his administration would make life better for the citizens, by giving them dividends of democracy across all the nooks and crannies of the state.

Also, when he took his campaign train to Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area (LGA) and Yemoji Local Council Development Area (LCDA), on Monday,  January 21, 2019, Abiodun admonished party faithfuls and supporters to be wary of the antics of politicians who are using the good name of the party to deceive them for their selfish ambition, just as the forthcoming general elections are approaching.

He said though some selfish political office seekers may have used the good name of APC to get into positions of authority and performed below expectations, he urged that that should not be used as a yardstick to measure all politicians.

While addressing APC members and supporters at Isiwo, in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, on Monday, as parts of his ward-to-ward campaign tour of all the 20 local governments, the APC governorship candidate promised that a new dawn is beckoning on all sons and daughters of the state, if he emerged as the next governor.

According to him, “don’t be deceived by some politicians that have gone out on the prowl, knocking at your doors to bring out your Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) to take the numbers on them and then, offer you money.

“And we can’t be in the same party and we will be making the same mistakes. No! It is not possible. These sets of politicians are not real. APC is the party. Broom is the symbol of our party. In all the elections, make sure you cast your votes for the APC.

“Buhari isn’t in another party but in APC. His Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo is our son and we should use our votes to promote him so that he  (Osinbajo) can know that his kinsmen are solidly behind him.

“I want to use this occasion to reiterate my commitment to ensuring that I bring my vast experience in the private sector to bear in governance if I emerge as the governor of the state”, Abiodun promised.

Responding to the requests of Oba Sikiru Salisu, and Council of Baales, Abiodun promised to help them in rehabilitating the 15 kilometre road stretching from Ijebu-Ode through Yemoji/Odo-Ladenusi/Oko-Ako/Odo-Lofa and to Isiwo; the construction of a culvert linking the various communities; renovation of both public primary and secondary schools; energizing the transformers; provision of pipe-borne water; among others.

Earlier, former APC Ogun East Senatorial district chairman, Alhaji Folorusho Elias, had expressed appreciation for the visit of Abiodun as part of his campaign tour, saying it would afford him an on-the-spot assessment of the deplorable road conditions and other amenities that are begging for attention for the benefit of the inhabitants of the communities.

He said the monarch, his subjects and the entire inhabitants have decided to speak with one voice and cast their votes for the candidature of Dapo Abiodun and the APC as a party.

“When you get into office help us reconstruct our road from Yemoji through Agboju. Also, help us reconstruct the only culvert linking our various communities. Our unemployed youths are there and we want your government to empower them. We have untapped large expanse of land, should you need them to set up businesses for our youths”, said the octogenarian.

Party stalwarts at the meeting included the Director-General (DG), Dapo Abiodun Campaign Organisation (DACO), Prince Segun Adesegun, Sen Gbenga Obadara, former Ogun SUBEB Chairman, Mr Mufutau Ajibola, Chief Bode Mustapha, former Ogun Sports Commissioner, Mr Afolabi Afuape, Hon Ganiyu Hamzat, Ijebu-Ode House of Assembly candidate, Aare Kemi Oduwole, Pa Olu Agemo, among others.

At Ikoti, in Yemoji LCDA, the APC governorship candidate promised to ensure that the Olokoola free trade zone becomes a reality if and when he gets into office.

He said his administration will be business friendly through the provision of an enabling environment where the people of the state can take its economic advantage.

According to Abiodun, the Olokoola deap sea port will be given priority in order to cater for the unemployed youths.

He said the Olokoola free trade zone happens to be the deepest seaport but unfortunately that opportunity has not been exploited .

“The economic importance of this project is our priority and when I become governor, I will bring investors to partner with Ogun state government. And that will have multiplier effects on the state economy. I will make it easy for investors to come and invest in Ogun state- both local and international investors.  I know how to do it, because I come from the private sector.”

Owu-Ijebu community, in Ijebu East Local Government Area, is not left alone.

Abiodun’s ambition received a significant boost as the Owu people, in their hundreds, declared their support for his candidature.

During a rousing reception organised for him, spokesperson of the community, the Atunluse of Owu Ijebu Kingdom, Otunba Femi Adewunmi, noted that the entire members of the community were throwing their weight behind the Abiodun in view of his vast experience in the private sector which is a clear testimony that he is capable of bringing his experience to bear at taking the economy of the state to a greater heights if he emerged as the governor.

He said:”Our in-coming governor, I want to gladly tell you that the people of Owu-Ijebu Kingdom are solidly behind you and we would influence all our other kinsmen across the State to do same. This is because we have seen you as an experienced business man who has been successful in his businesses and it won’t be difficult for you to take this State to greater heights’.

He added: “we are assuring you of our maximum support with our resources to ensure you emerge victorious with our votes in this local government, and the state at large. We are urging you to make sure you fulfill most of your electoral promises and give a new lease of life to the people of Ijebuland and Ogun State at large”.

The APC candidate assured them of good governance and even distribution of government projects across the board in the state when he becomes governor.

He said: “I want to sincerely appreciate you for this colorful reception and it is an indication that God is truly with us on this project. I also want to assure you that your support will not be taking for granted and we will ensure that this is reciprocated through provisions of good governance that will enhance good lives for, both dwellers in the urban and rural areas of the State.

Earlier, the campaign train which moved round the local government from Ijebu-Imushin to J4 to Ebute Odo to Ogbere and Itele before the grand finale at Ijebu Ife.

The people of the local government area were enthusiastic and show their readiness to support the candidate.

However, the support became obvious at Itele-Ijebu where market women and men, and artisans of the local government promised to throw their weight behind the APC governorship candidate.

Also during the week, it was a matter of who the cap fits. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), an illustrious son of Remoland, took no one by surprise as he led the campaign tour of Abiodun to all the three local governments that make up Remoland. Shortly after paying homage to Remo traditional rulers in 33 communities led by the Akarigbo and Paramount ruler of the Kingdom,  Oba Babatunde Ajayi, the VP who campaigned for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-electionn, also seized the occasion to campaign for Abiodun as the Ogun State APC governorship candidate in Sagamu, Ikenne, Ilishan, Isara, Iperu, Ode-Remo, Ogere and other adjourning communities.

Spokesperson, Remoland sons and daughters, Otunba Adeleke Adeshina, adduced reasons for the town hall meeting. He said it was organised as a rallying point to drum up support for the joint ticket re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari/Yemi Osinbajo and the election of Dapo Abiodun as Ogun State governor.

“Three local governments that make up Remoland under the leadership of the Akarigbo and Paramount ruler of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, 33 towns being represented by their respective Obas, professionals and all business communities have put this town hall meeting together for the cause of our son, Vice – President Yemi Osinbajo.

“Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo is our son and he is from Ikenne, here in Remoland.

“So, we are here to drum up our support for President Muhammadu Buhari cause and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo”, said Adeleke. By the grace of God, on February 17, we will all sing songs of celebration after their reelection” he conculded .
