  • Court remands herdsman for allegedly killing farmer

    An Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court in Osun on Tuesday remanded a 45-year-old herdsman, Abubakar Bello, in Ilesa Prison, over alleged murder of a farmer, Zachariah Oyebamiji.

    Magistrate Mary Awodele, ordered that the defendant be kept behind bars in Ilesa, pending legal advice from the Office of the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Awodele adjourned the case until May 20, for mention.

    Bello is facing a two-count charge of murder.

    The Prosecutor, Insp Elisha Olusegun, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 13, at 12.30 p.m., at Ila-Orangun, Osun.

    Olusegun  said that the accused conspired with others at large and killed Oyebamiji, on his farm.

    He said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 324 and 319(1) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 vol. 11, Laws of Osun, 2002.

    The plea of the defendant was not taken by the court.

  • Police arraign two teenagers for alleged burglary

    The police yesterday arraigned two teenagers at an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged burglary.

    The defendants, Yusuf Olaniyi, 18, and the other, a 15-year-old boy, were arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on burglary, conspiracy and theft.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Fagboyinbo Abiodun alleged that the defendants committed the offences on February 20, at about 10am, at Eleyele area, Osogbo.

    He said the defendants conspired and burgled the house of Ilesanmi Benjamin, stealing one plasma television set worth about N44,000.

    He added that the duo also stole a stabiliser valued at N15,000, before they were apprehended.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 516, 411, 451 and 383 punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. 11 Laws of Osun, 2003.

    The plea of the defendants was not taken.

    Magistrate Mrs. Rofiat  Olayinka ordered that the defendants be kept in police custody,  pending the determination of the real age of the 15-year-old boy.

    The case was adjourned till March 1.

  • Police arraign 28 for allegedly setting station ablaze

    The Police in Osun on Thursday arraigned 28 persons before an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court in Osun for their alleged involvement in burning down a police station in Iwo, Osun.

    The police arraigned Raheem Adewale, 26, Lateef Oluwafemi, 28, Ishola Jimoh,19, Kazeem Rafiu,31, Kabiru Mudashiru, 35, Ajayi Michael, 18, Wasiu Suleiman, 40, Adeyemi Buhari, 25, Matthew Tochukwu, 26, Tella Akeem, 36, Kamali Dudu, 25, Arioye Saheed, 25, and Adeniyi Muhammed,23.

    Others are Bashiru Mutairu, 38, Muhammed Abdulrahrem, 25, Peru John,30, Ibrahim Adeyemi,39, Kamaru Adisa, 50, Isamatu Ahmed, 23, Saheed Adisa, 51,Adetoye Wasiu,50,Alao Timileyin,18, Obele Adeyemi, 23, Jimoh Sadiq, 26, Adiamo Abdullahi, 23, Obele Adekunle, 36, Oladunjoye Isaac, 30, and Owoade Yekini, 20.

    The Prosecutor, Insp Mustapha Tajudeen , told the court that the accused persons allegedly committed the offences on Aug. 24 at 10.30 p.m, at Iwo.

    Tajudeen said the accused conspired among themselves to set ablaze a Police Area Command office and its quarters which led to unlawful damage of Police Patrol Vehicles with Reg. No NPF 446D, NPF38C, SAS05, NPF 7619 and other items.

    He alleged that the accused persons also damaged two AK47 riffles and one riot gun as well as an SUV Jeep with registration number GGC 281 GE Valued N3.4 million.

    The prosecutor said accused also assaulted one Sgt  Ogundipe Kolawole , by inflicting injuries on him and also stole some electronic gadgets which was valued at one million Naira.

    Tajudeen said a pair of police camouflage , three pair of police uniform, one shirt , jeans, and a cash sum of N23,000 was carted away by the defendants.

    Tajudeen said the offences committed contravened sections 516,443, 451,,356,70, 69,71,390 punishable under section 383 of the criminal code cap 34 vol.11 ,Laws of Osun, 2003.

    After the charges were read to them, they pleaded not guilty to the 17-count charge bordering on conspiracy, assault, breach of peace, unlawful damages, theft, and threat to live.

    The Defence Counsel, Mr Taofeeq Telowogbade, prayed the court to admit his clients bail  on the most liberal terms.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Falilat Sodamade, grantye the prayers of the defence counsel and admitted them to bail in the sum of N500,000 each with one surety each in the like sum.

    Sodamade ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and show with evidence of tax two years tax payment to Osun government.

    She also ordered that the sureties must submit three passports photographs to the court registrar and provide affidavits of means.

    The magistrate adjourned until Oct. 8 for mention.

  • Man, 35, docked over alleged impersonation in Osun

    A 35-year-old man, Suleiman Sadiq, was on Monday brought before an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court in Osun over alleged impersonation. Sadiq is facing a two- count charge bordering on impersonation.

    The Prosecutor, Mr Onochie Ekwon, told the court that the accused committed the offence on May, 16, at about 10:00 a.m. at No. 42, Omigade St., Ogo-Oluwa area of Osogbo.

    Ekwon alleged that the accused presented himself as an official of the State Security Service Department with intent to defraud unsuspecting persons.

    He said the offence contravened Sections 484 and 108(1)(2) of the Criminal Code Cap. 34, Vol.11, Laws of Osun, 2002.

    The accused, who had no legal representation, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Olu Oloyade, however, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 and two sureties in like sum.

    Oloyade said the sureties, who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, should show evidence of tax payment to the Osun government.

    She adjourned the case to October 5 for hearing.

    Two remanded for alleged murder of UNIOSUN student

    An Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court in Osun, on Tuesday remanded two persons in an Ilesa prison for alleged murder of a UNIOSUN student.

    The accused persons, Izak Yusuf, 49, and Abdulkazeem Adeoti, 55, are facing a three count-charge of conspiracy, murder and unlawful possession of human parts.

    The prosecutor, ASP Mireti Wilson, told the court that the two committed the offence on June 26 at about 9:p.m at Oke Baale in Osogbo.

    Wilson said that the accused persons conspired among themselves to kill Timileyin Oluwafemi Sonibare with a pestle and cut his head, hands and other parts.

    He that said the victim was a student of University of Osun (UNIOSUN) until his death.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 324, 319 and 242 of the Criminal Code cap 34 vol.11 Laws of Osun, 2003.

    The two accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of conspiracy, murder and unlawful possession.

    The defence counsel, Mr Kazeem Badmus, prayed the magistrate to grant his clients bail in the most liberal terms.

    Mrs Mary Awodele, the Magistrate, however, declined to grant the accused bail due to the magnitude of the offence they were alleged to have committed.

    She ordered the accused persons to be remanded in Ilesa prison until July 25, when the case would come up for mention.

     

  • Man docked over theft of food items

    A 37-year-old man, Mukaila Shamotu, was on Thursday arraigned in an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing food items valued at N109, 000.

    Shamotu of no fixed address is facing a two-count charge of burglary and theft.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Rasak Olaiwola, told the court that the accused committed the offences between May 8 and May 9 at Ota-Efun area in Osun.

    Olaiwola said Shamotu broke into the shop of Oyekan Funke and stole some food items: bag rice, bag beans, 25 litres of groundnut oil, and 25 litres of red oil among others worth N109, 000.

    Olaiwola said the offences contravened Sections 413 and 383 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol.11, Laws of Osun, 2003.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The counsel to the accused, Mr. Najite Okobie, prayed the court to grant his client bail in liberal terms.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Fatimoh Sodamade, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 and one surety in the like sum.

    Sodamade said the surety must reside within the court jurisdiction with evidence of tax payment, produce two passport photographs, an affidavit of means and the address which should be verified.

    She adjourned the case until Aug. 2 for hearing.

     

  • Man docked over alleged assault in Osun

    A 33-year-old man, Wasiu Banji, was on Tuesday arraigned in an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged assault.

    Banji is facing a one-count charge of assault.

    The Prosecutor, Insp Fagboyinbo Abiodun, told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 12 at about 7:30 pm  at Ikolaba , Aromole area of  Osogbo.

    Abiodun said the accused, who was engaged in an argument  with the complainant,  Ogundare Daniel,  over money, resorted to self-help  and  inflicted injuries on him  with a  cutlass.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 355 of the Criminal Code,  Cap 34,   Vol. 11, Laws of  Osun, 2003.

    The accused, however,  pleaded not guilty to the charge against him.

    The defence counsel, Mr Promise Jones, prayed the court  to grant his client bail in liberal terms.

    The magistrate, Mr Olusola Aluko, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with  two sureties in like sum.

    Aluko, who  said  the sureties must reside within the court’s  jurisdiction, also ordered them to show  evidence of tax payment as well as present  two passports size photographs  attached with an affidavit of means.

    The case was adjourned till May 30 for mention.

     

  • Court convicts Osun monarch for contempt

    An Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday convicted an Osun monarch, the Olokini of Okini, Oba Akadiri Okanola, 65, and one Suleiman Rasaki, 47, for contempt.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Olusola Aluko, however, freed the monarch and his secretary on self-recognition, who pleaded guilty, but cautioned them.

    The prosecuting state counsel, Mr Ogunleye Muyiwa, said the traditional ruler had refused to show up in a case- Mos/192c/ 2013, instituted against him without any genuine reason.

    The defendants are facing an eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy, forceful entry, threat to life and assault.

    Muyiwa told the court that Oba Okanola and his secretary Rasaki, committed the offence on Dec. 2, 2012 at about 3:00p.m. at Awoniyi Street, Ilobu, Okini.

    Muyiwa said that the defendants conspired to breach the peace of the area by unlawfully entering into a piece of land belonging to one Rasheed Awoniyi.

    He said that the accused persons organised some thugs to attack some bricklayers carrying out their jobs on the land in questioned.

    He said the offences contravened Section 133(2) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. 11 Laws of Osun, 2003.

    Counsel to the convicts, Mr Abimbola Ige, prayed the magistrate to temper justice with mercy in sentencing the convicts.

    The case was adjourned till April 7.

    Man, 42, remanded for alleged N1m fraud in Osun

    A 42-year-old man, Idowu Mayowa, was on Monday remanded in Ilesa Prison by an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged N1million fraud.

    The magistrate, Mr Olusola Aluko, who ordered the accused to be kept behind bars, said it was due to the magnitude of his offences.

    Mayowa is facing a two-count charge of fraud.

    Aluko also revoked the bail application by the defence counsel and ordered that a formal bail application must be served on March 24, when the case would come up for hearing.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Joshua Oladoye, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on Dec.16, 2016 at Okefia, Osogbo.

    Prosecutor Oladoye told the court that Mayowa under the pretext that he would supply floor tiles to one Okeyode Olaoluwa collected N1million from him.

    The prosecutor said the accused had been on the run since he duped Olaoluwa before he was arrested by the police.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 419 and 390(9) of the criminal code, cap 34, vol.11, Laws of Osun, 2003.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.

    The counsel to the accused, Mrs Bayo Odetunde, prayed the magistrate to grant her client bail in the most liberal terms.
