  • Osogbo prepares for Osun festival

    Osogbo prepares for Osun festival

IT has been on for close to 800 years. And for many more years to come, the romance between a people and their patron goddess would continue.

So far, the Osogbo people never fail to call the whole world to their city in honour of their goddess, Osun. And for many indigenes and worshippers of the Osun goddess, that is the source of prosperity for the town and people of Osogbo. Next month, tourists would once again troop to the ancient artistic Osogbo kingdom to celebrate with the city as it holds another Osun Osogbo festival.

But the festival has gone beyond a  festival for the people of Osogbo. Whatever cultural tourism value Nigeria has in the world, Osun Osogbo festival and the Osun grove contributed greatly to it. For tourists interested in experiencing the celebration of the festival, it is time to start making travel arrangements, especially accommodation as there never seems to be enough bed spaces in the city, especially on the grand finale.

Being a festival that attracts huge tourist traffic to Osogbo during the 17-day event, corporate organizations have latched unto it to promote their products and make huge sales.

So, it has become a kind of custom for the Osun Osogbo marketers, Infogem Limited, to unveil the each year’s activities at a corporate forum. The forum is also an opportunity for the marketers and the Osogbo Heritage Council to announce date for the event and unveil sponsors for the year’s edition. One of the things that has made the Osun Osogbo festival a cultural- cum- touristic activity is the custodians’ ability to not open up the festival to activities within, outside grove and traditional rites.

As such Osun Osogbo has become a festival that has evolved over the years, incorporating activities that attract both the young and the old, it attracts also individuals and corporate organizations. So, Osun Osogbo celebrates the ancient and the modern. This is reflected in activities lined up for the celebration. It will hold next month. Iwopopo, the traditional cleansing, which signals the beginning of the annual festival, is set for Monday,August 11. Aside this traditional rite, there will be fun for tourists.

The Iwopopo Town Storming, a  musical fiesta, would also be on the card. The Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria’s (FTAN) Osun Forum will hold on the 12th, while the Festival of Art Exhibition’s opening ceremony and Ayo Olopon (traditional ayo games) will be on Wednesday, August 13. Olojumerindinlogun, the Lighting of a 16- Point Lamp will hold on August 14.

The lamp itself is of great interest as it is reputed to be over 500 years old. Another key traditional event, called Iboriade, is on Monday, August 18.  Iboriade is the celebration of royalty and ancestry of the Osogbo people. On display will be the crowns worn by past Ataoja, oba of Osogbo’s title. The crowns date back to hundreds of years. Susanne Wenger’s Sacred Colloquium will hold on Wednesday, August 20.

The grand finale is expected to hold on Friday, August 22. This year’s event would conclude with the Osun Festival Trade Fair, a day after the traditional grand finale. In its effort to help Osun Osogbo continue to develop as a destination, the Osun State government said it had spent N147,385,250 in the last three years to uplift the festival.

This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the Osun State Governor on Tourism and Culture, Mr. Ladi Soyode. He said since the inception of the Aregbesola administration, “the promotion of matters that have to do with the Yoruba cultural renaissance is given a pride of place.”

According to him, this was because “the objectives of reviving our traditional industries like cloth dying and weaving, bead making, carving of art works in various mediums, revival of traditional hair styles, the promotion of ancient festivals and celebration in majestic proportions will not only reduce poverty by encouraging industry, but promote the ethos of Omoluabi which form the basis of the socio-political ideology of the Aregbesola administration in Osun.”

Soyode gave a breakdown of last year’s  festival arrivals. The festival attracted 21, 713 domestic tourists, while 123 in-bound tourists also attended the fair last year. He  said the state government was committed to the following activities at this year’s festival: Tourism Ambassadors Programme, Osun Osogbo Festival Trade Fair, the Festival Marathon Walk, Osun Osogbo Food Festival and the festival concert. Giving the history of the festival, the Festival Co-ordinator, Chief Jimoh Buraimoh, said the relationship between the town of Osogbo and the Osun goddess started around 1370 AD with an encounter between the founders of Osogbo and the Osun Osogbo deity.

He said: “In about 1370 AD, founder of Osogbo, Oba Gbadewolu Larooye, and the great hunter, Olutimehin, settled in the sacred Osun forest to establish the kingdom and actualized a pact of association and togetherness with the river deity. Since then, Osogbo has remained a peaceful, progressive and benevolent city without any ravage of war or pestilence. This is the pact of association which rekindled every year in the month of August.”

Buraimoh described the activities associated with the festival as springboard for cultural development in Osun State and Nigeria in general. He said despite the influence of western civilization, education and religion, the festival has, to a large extent, maintained its originality, authenticity and acceptability worldwide.

From plans being put in place, it is going to be another successful edition. Also sponsors such as  MTN, Nigerian Breweries and brands such as Seaman’s, Alomo, Eko Hotel  and many others have identified with this year’s edition.

  • OAU students protest tuition fee hike

OAU students protest tuition fee hike

Thousands of students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State on Tuesday protested the increase in the institution’s tuition.

Led by their union’s President-Elect, Mr. Ibikunle Isaac, the protesters said the hike was unacceptable.

The aggrieved students were carrying placards with inscriptions like: “OAU STUDENTS SAY NO TO TUITION INCREMENT,” “OMOLE, BRING DOWN OUR SCHOOL FEE,” “OMOLE, YOU ENJOYED FREE EDUCATION, WHY KILLING IT?,” “THE POOR DESERVES QUALITY EDUCATION TOO” among others.

Some Post-Graduate students of the university also participated in the protest which began as early as 8.00 am. The students had converged at the school’s Anglomoz car park and later marched out of the campus to Oduduwa University, Ile-Ife, along Lagos-Ibadan expressway where they barricaded the roads.

Following the protest, there was a traffic gridlock as many motorists found it difficult to get into Ife township.
The students also were distributing handbills to sensitize the travellers on the road about their plight.

When the Student Union President-Elect was addressing his colleagues, he dropped the hints that the university management had reduced the tuition fee by #17,000 after holding meeting with the students representatives. He said the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Omole had promised to reverse the increase in tuition fee at the meeting which was held at the school Senate Building.

According to him: “The management had increased increased the tuition from #17,000 to about #100,000 apart from #20,000 acceptance and accommodation fees. We have exhausted all peaceful means, we have consulted union bodies like ASUU, NASU and even the alumni body of the institution to help us appeal to the management to reverse the fee but no avail.

“The Vice Chancellor had told us (the leadership of the Student Union) during a meeting yesterday that it was the federal government that directed them to increase the school and that the federal government cannot continue funding education, that is why we barricaded the federal government roads here in Ife. We are not here alone, we are also here with Post Graduate students because it affected them also.

The police found it very difficult to make the students allow free flow of traffic as the students were resolute to make sure no vehicle passed through the barricade.

Candidates  writing the Computer Based Test Mode of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) on campus were almost affected by the protest as the students prevented commercial bus drivers and motorcyclists from conveying passengers to the venue of the examination.

The management of the institution last week increased the acceptance fee payable by the newly admitted students from #2,000 to #20,000 in 2010 thus resulting to protest that led to the closing down of the institution for three months.

The newly admitted students of the institution would be paying #74, 000 as against #17,000 excluding the acceptance fee of #20, 000 while the returning students would be paying around #50,000 as against #7,000.

  • Three persons burnt to death over alleged kidnap in Osogbo

Three persons burnt to death over alleged kidnap in Osogbo

THREE persons, suspected to be kidnappers, were on Friday, burnt to death in Osogbo, the Osun State capital. Investigation revealed that youths, led by commercial motorcyclists, combed the town to pick up the suspected kidnappers in different parts of Osogbo, and attacked them with sticks, woods cudgel and later set them ablaze with disused tyres. A suspect was burnt to death at the Ayetoro area of the city by an irate mob, while the other two were burnt at Plantation and Igbona areas of the town. Another suspected kidnapper, Segun Akinwale, was on Thursday, rescued by the police from being lynched in the Alekuwodo area of the town for allegedly attempting to kidnap a child before his mother found out. His alleged confession was said to have irked the youths, mostly the okada’s riders. It was gathered that the suspect allegedly confessed that nine of his colleagues are already at different parts of the town to kidnap children in Osogbo and its environs. Based on the alleged confession, angry youths moved round Osogbo in search of other kidnappers, during which the three suspects were burnt to death. At Ayetoro area of Osogboa, it was gathered that the suspected kidnapper was found with a baby inside a bag he carried. Drivers at the Ayetoro junction were said to have challenged the suspected kidnapper, who reportedly dressed like an insane person, and opened the bag that was found with him. It was, however not certain if the boy allegedly kidnapped and found in the bag was alive or dead. The development allegedly prompted the youths in the area to mobilize others and set the suspected kidnapper ablaze. A similar incident occurred at the Plantation and Igbona areas of the town where youths of the area set ablaze those suspected to have kidnapped some children in the area. The police have been deployed round Osogbo to prevent further break down of law and order. Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Maishanu, has condemned the trend of burning of suspects in the state, describing it as jungle justice, which he said was against the law. He said the state would not be allowed to be turned into a theater of crisis, vowing that the police would do everything possible to forestall further breakdown of law and order. Assuring that the police would conduct thorough investigation on the incident, the Police Commissioner warned that people should desist from taking laws into their hands. Also speaking, the state governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, condemned the development. He warned the residents against jungle justice, saying cases of criminal activities should be reported to law enforcement agencies, rather than the people taking the laws into their hands. Speaking through his Director, Bureau of Communications and Strategy, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, in a statement, the governor stressed that the state government would join hands with relevant security agencies to ensure proper security of lives and property of the people of the state.

  • Police rescue suspected kidnapper in Osogbo

A suspected kidnapper was rescued yesterday by the police from being lynched at Alekuwodo in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

Segun Akinwale was allegedly trying to kidnap a primary school pupil at Alekuwodo Market when he was nabbed by passers by.

He was said to have fled the scene, but was later apprehended and beaten up by a mob.

Akinwale was rescued by a police patrol team and taken to the police headquarters.

  • Osogbo: From rurality to modernity

    Osogbo: From rurality to modernity

You begin to feel the splendour of the Osun State capital, Osogbo, right from the satellite towns. On the median of the express road that leads to the town are neatly arranged and beautiful street lights, which have combined to add colour and beauty to the road. On either side of the express road are beautifully designed houses and offices.
You do not need a soothsayer to confirm to you that Osogbo has benefitted from the cordial relationship between Osun and Lagos states. The ubiquitous exotic vehicles with Lagos registration number surely elicit curiosity. And one out of seven private cars you see in Osogbo is likely to have Lagos registration number.
Explaining the trend, a resident of the state capital, Alade Jacobs, said the presence of private cars with Lagos registration number is largely connected with the influx of people who have seen hitherto absent opportunities in the state capital. “Of recent, people from Lagos are trooping here probably because of the business opportunities and the peaceful atmosphere that pervades the town. Here, crime is not something that you hear often.”
Ever since it took over the reign of power in Osun State a little over three years ago, the present administration has made no pretentions about its determination to turn around the fortunes of the state capital from its agrarian setting and make it stand shoulder to shoulder with other capital cities around the world.
And with sure-footed measures, Osogbo is gradually wearing a look, which many have agreed has fast-forwarded the status of a city, which prior to this time had only been made popular by the Osun Osogbo Festival.
Today, entering Osogbo, you would but appreciate the transformation that it has witnessed in recent times, especially if you have been away from there for sometime. For the first time, Osogbo is looking like a true state capital.
And everywhere you turn, the air of security around you gives an added assurance to both old and new residents, both day and night. The presence of patrolling anti-crime policemen in well-maintained Hilux vans and the Armoured Carrier Personnel (APC), manned by Swift Action Squad (SAS) is a warning sign that there is no room for crime and criminality in the state.
A few years ago, Osogbo, like other towns of similar status, goes to sleep as early as 10pm, leaving night crawlers with no other choice than an early romance with their beds. But all that have today been consigned to the dustbin of history. Even as early as 3am, you are sure of getting commercial motorcles (Okada) to wherever you are going.
Driving in Osogbo from the Iwo Road axis going to Stadium road, you need not go through the town, because you have the newly constructed East bye pass of the Ring road; Capital-Awosuru will also afford road users who want to avoid the Okefia axis to burst out to the Gbongan-Ibadan express way.
Another is that of the newly-constructed Capital – Tinumola estate road that links the newly completed Oroki estate- LAMECO junction road.
Going through the Mainland of Osogbo, you will have the Isalegbemu-balogun Agoro-Oluode terminating at Boorepo Ayetoro axis. You will also avoid the main road and traffic going through Okebaale beside eid praying ground to Oke-abesu road.
On the Ogooluwa axis is that of Omigade area, Guarantee trust side road and FOMWAN- Okoso road.
The list of the newly constructed roads which were left unattended to before the advent of the aregbesola administration have been completed to service people within the capital city.
Like a typical state capital, the atmosphere in Osogbo during the working hours is always busy and serious. But as night approaches, the business and official lifestyle fades, giving way to an atmosphere of robust, but simple energy.
Done with the day’s work, fun seekers quickly pull off the official suit and tie and change into simple night attire before converging on the different clubs that have sprung up in the town. For instance, The ‘Pavilion’ and ‘The Place’, located along Olusegun Obasanjo Way and Dada Estate, have become the hotspots for fun seekers. According to a resident and patron of the clubs, Taju, ‘These two places have become unarguably the biggest spots in Osogbo.”
When our correspondent visited ‘The Pavilion’ at about 8 pm on Sunday, activities at the club were at their peak. At this moment, the barrier of class, sex and age was broken, as guests, young and old, male and female, the rich and the not so rich mixed freely, enjoying the cool night breeze to the fullest.
Unlike other places where social activities and night crawling have become a thing of the past, in Osogbo, whatever time you want to move out, you do not have to entertain fears of being mugged or molested. Little wonder, no time is too late for both male and female to walk on the street.
Wherever you visit in the town, you are sure to be confronted with one construction site or the other, with all the constituencies experiencing one form of developmental project or the other. Added to these are scores of roads that have been completed.
Also, aesthetics have found meaning in Osogbo. Today, you cannot ignore the neatness of the city. The urban renewal programme already put in place by the present administration has really helped in shaping the town.
Schemes such as O’Clean and the beautification scheme of the environment ministry have been responsible for the city’s cleanliness.
A new comer to the Okefia and the old railway station (now Freedom Park) areas of Osogbo will appreciate the turnaround that has taken place in there. Just a little over four years ago, those places were congested, littered with old buildings and shanties, which gave the city an image of ancientness.
Okefia and Freedom Park today wear beautiful and modern looks befitting a state capital. For the first time in the history of the state, lovers of football and the European football leagues can watch the beautiful game live on the two large LED screens installed in the areas.
Popularly called ‘big television’ by local residents, the LED TV screens give the city a beautiful outlook at night. “You can see that the big televisions have given us the opportunity to watch football with our friends in a beautiful atmosphere. The first time that the televisions were put on at night, I almost did not believe that I was still in Osogbo,” a resident told our correspondent.
While the TV screens give the residents a new outlook of modern life, the Freedom Park offers them a new rendezvous that was hitherto unavailable to them. At the end of the day’s work, fun seekers who cannot afford the highbrow clubs in town converge on the park. With neatly arranged chairs and tables and, of course, cool music blaring from music boxes, the people can relate with the experience that has long been denied them.
The giant TV screens at Okefia and the one at Freedom Park are crowd pullers anytime there is a big football match, especially the one involving Nigeria. Whether you are in Osogbo for business or pleasure, the allure of the town will surely make you want to come back.
Speaking on the trend, the Director of Bureau of Communication, Semiu Okanlawon, said: “Massive developments and transformations! That is the only way to capture the the new looks that Osun wears in almost all the facets of its life at the moment.’’
He added: ‘’Miffed by the degree of decay in almost all sectors when it came in, the Aregbesola administration had said there must be renewal of its urban centres in a manner that will be attractive to investors, tourists and others. Cities like Osogbo, Iwo, Ilesa, Ejigbo, Ikire, Ile-Ife, Ila, Ikirun, Ede each in the nine federal constituencies were marked for the demonstration of how modern cities with economic values must look.
“Osun in partnership with UN-Habitat, is implementing structural adjustments and replanning nine cities in the state. The manifestation of the afore-mentioned is conspicuous in the state capital, which hitherto could not live up with the status of a state capital, but with the coming of the present administration, the story is now changing.
“It all started with the beatification exercise in Osogbo with all the roundabouts in the state capital, which was like home to destitute persons, now wearing a different look as you enter Osogbo from all the entry points. The present administration of Aregbesola has completed about 700 kilometres of roads out of about 1000kilometeres of roads it has embarked on.”
