    Ikeja LG partners NGO to fight sexual abuse

    In line with the Lagos State government’s drive to eradicate all forms of abuse against children, the Ikeja Local Government through the department of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, in conjunction with a non-governmental organisation, the Amazing Amazons has launched a sexual abuse and domestic violence awareness programme for primary schools tagged “Touch Me Not” campaign.

    The campaign which was launched last week Thursday at Agidingbi Primary School, Ikeja is to enlighten and empower child especially girls on the various forms and effects of sexual abuse, domestic violence and rape. The launch of the programme featured the members of the Amazing Amazons drilling the pupils on how to dictate sexual abuse and the proper reactions and steps to take.

    The event also witnessed the launch of the ‘Touch me Not Club’ for girls of Agidingbi Primary School. The club which is voluntary will be having weekly activities with the members as ambassadors of the campaign. While inaugurating the club, the Sole Administrator of Ikeja Local Government Engr. Abiodun Taiwo encouraged the pupils to be bold and speak out whenever anyone touches them inappropriately. He admonished them to be focused and strive to be the best. The Sole Administrator pledged to donate a set of branded T-shirt for all the members of the ‘Touch me Not’ Club.

    In her own remark, the Council Manager and Head of Administration of Ikeja Local Government, Mrs Mosunmola Otaiku – Okoka encouraged parents especially the mothers to be friendly, open and accessible to their children so as to enhance communication. She noted that a lot of children are being abused in the society but they could not open up to their parents because of lack of trust.

    The Lagos State Coordinator of the Amazing Amazons, Mrs Ajijola Bolanle who spoke on behalf of the founder, Mercy Makinde noted that sexual abuse is now an epidemic ravaging our society. She called on everyone to stand up and fight for the children. In her word, “if you are just watching, you are not better than those abusing the children.

    The impact of the ‘Touch Me Not’ training given to the children was instant when a 17-year-old girl who is still in primary 5 walked up to the Sole Administrator and opened up on her experience. According to the girl, she was originally living with a woman as a house help but had to run away because the woman’s husband and his friends started sleeping with her. The young girl was to end up with another lady that sells alcohol only to be turned into a prostitute.

    The Sole Administrator immediately ordered that the girl’s issue be taken over by the local government starting with finding her a new abode.

    Not less than 37 people have been killed and many injured in Italy after an earthquake hit Accumoli and Amatrice towns.

    This was confirmed by Fabio Curcio, head of Italy’s Civil Protection  Department on Wednesday morning,  Associated Press (AP) reports.

    According to reports, the two towns of  Accumoli and Amatrice were struck around 3;36 a.m local time when most residents were already asleep.

    The mayor of Amatrice re-affirmed that a large portion of that town had been destroyed and that residents had been buried under the rubble of collapsed homes and buildings.

    The Civil Protection Department labeled the earthquake as “severe,” as reports of power and communications outages and ruptured gas lines added to the difficulties facing emergency responders.

    ANSA reports that the quake was felt across four regions of central Italy: Lazio, Umbria, Abruzzo and Marche.

  • Youwin awardees lament delay in payment of grants

    The awardees of the third edition of the YouWin programme have threatened to sack 4,500 workers if government fails to meet up with its financial obligation.

    The umbrella body representing the third edition of YouWin3 awardess, made this threat following the nine months delay by the Federal Government to pay the grants of between N1million and N10million, which they won.

    According to the organization in a statement, awardees under the third edition of the programme are suffering a lot of business and personal losses due to the inability of the Federal Government to pay promptly since winning the grant.

    The group of Awardees lamented that many of them resigned paid employment to completely go into business after winning the grants, adding: “The Federal Ministry of Finance has delayed the payment of the remaining second and third tranches of the grants to deserving awardees for the past nine months.

    “YouWin3 Awardees have made series of representation to the Minister of Finance and the Permanent Secretary through series of letters to her office on the matter, which has not yield fruits.

    “The Federal Ministry of Finance claims that payments to awardees are being frustrated due to delay by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in respect to releasing the funds for awardees already captured in the Treasury Single Account (TSA) for disbursement.

    “The Secretariat and Federal Ministry of Finance have approved awardees for payments of the remaining second and third tranches having met the job creation milestones, but all efforts to get the business grants in full as agreed with the Ministry have not been fruitful despite starting the business and creating over 4,500 jobs in the third edition.

    The statement further noted that due to the failure or inability of government to fulfill its mandate as agreed has hampered many of the business from growing.

    “We call on the World Bank and the Department for International Development (DFID) who are partners and funders of the Youwin programme to urgently intervene in this matter and save our business from collapsing.

    “We call on the organized private sector and the civil society organization to urgently intervene to save our future and protect our jobs in the local economy by prevailing on government to act to save our business,” the group said.

    The Awardees said the Federal Government must act within 14 days threatening: “We may have no choice but to call all 1,500 Youwin third edition awardees and Nigerian youths for a public protest during which we shall occupy the Federal Ministry of Finance and engage in a hunger strike until we get results.”

    This advice was given by a grandmother posted on Facebook telling her granddaughters to “date the nerd in school” because he may turn into the next billionaire.

    In a response to a New Year post from the tech tycoon, Darlene Hackemer Loretto commented: “I keep telling my granddaughters to Date the nerd in school, he may turn out to be a Mark Zuckerberg!”

    Similarly, Zuckerberg said: “Even better would be to encourage them to be the nerd in their school so they can be the next successful inventor,” he advised.

    The Facebook chief executive recently celebrated the birth of his daughter Max with his wife Priscilla Chan.

    A nerd is a term that indicates that a person is overly intellectual, obsessive, or lacking social skills.

  • Expert charges FG on emotional tolerance in schools

    The Federal Government has been advised to include emotional Intelligence into the school Curriculum for better society in the nearest future.
    This was disclosed by Mr. Enahoro Okhae, strategist and principal of Emotional Intelligence Network, a subsidiary of Simeon’s Pivotal Resources to mark this year United Nations tolerance day held at Ethnic Heritage Centre, Ikoyi Lagos.
    Speaking on the topic: ‘Talents For tolerance’, Okhae noted that it is very important for Governments at all levels to incorporate Emotional Intelligence into the school curriculum for the benefits of the teachers and the students in particular for the nation to have a better and meaningful future.
    The emotion expert pointed that the society is embedded with series of vices which can influence an average child in the society but early incorporating of emotional intelligence in the school curriculum will help the child not to fall prey of the vices.
    In his words: “Corruption and every other negative vices is as a result of inability of the people to take charge of their emotions which is an emotional weakness and this must be tackle from the root.
    “Youth exuberance, peer pressure and unemployment can lead to restlessness youth but the understanding of emotional intelligence will help such a youth to manage any circumstances he may find himself and be calm to handle any situation.
    “Everything around the World will cause you to react but you must be able to manage your emotion, create your own circumstances and navigate your emotion in an appropriate way,” Okhae submitted.
