Osun LG crisis: Jankaraism at play

Ankara Was A popular slang among lawyers those days when legal practice was at its best. Those were the days when lawyers stuck to the rules of their trade. They only argued their cases in court and not on television, radio and in newspapers.

Unfortunately, the reverse is the case today. What is troubling is that lawyers who should know and set examples for young wigs as their own seniors did for them when they started out are most guilty of this unprofessional act.

They go on air masquerading as legal pundits when in fact they are discussing matters in which they are lawyers to a party. What they are doing is forbidden in law practice. It is elementary that cases are not discussed outside the hallowed precincts of the courtroom. Even law students and lay men know this. It is called sub judice in latin.

But these days, very senior lawyers have made punditry their hobby. They hop from one television and radio studio to the other, commenting on the very case they are handling in court, in breach of their practice rule. They and their interviewers try to be clever by half – pretending as if the interviewees know nothing about such cases before coming on air.

Whereas the interviewee knows a lot about the case and only came to defend his position. But they mask their intentions by skirting around other issues to deceive the gullible viewer before returning to where they are going which is the lawyer’s case in court. Thinking that he is wise, the interviewer after leading the interviewee on, will say something like this:

“That is not where I am going. I didn’t know that you are seized of this matter. Now, since we have touched on it, let’s take it up from there. What are the issues involved in the case…” Responding in kind, the lawyer will cut in: “I am seized of the case. You see… (calling the interviewer’s name), there are two judgments of the Federal High Court and a judgment of the Court of Appeal on the matter…”

And the lawyer goes on and on, without stating that he is a lawyer in the case. This is the depth to which legal practice has sunk. Regrettably, the undertakers are the many senior lawyers who are expected to shine the light for their juniors to follow, and their professional body, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

This is the kind of Jankara practice that eminent lawyers deplored in the olden days, even though some of then engaged in it too when it suited them. Jankara is the use of stealth to win a case by all means. It is a deplorable act which decent lawyers condemned then and still condemn now, but it has remained an untamed monster in legal practice because of the incorrigibility of many lawyers.

Jankara is a strong phrase which no lawyer wants his colleague to use for him inside or outside the court. It was fun those days watching eminent lawyers in court, doing battle over the slang. They threatened fire and brimstone, even going to the extent of saying they would withdraw their appearance, if the Judge did not ask the user of the phrase to withdraw it.

Going the Jankara way as witnessed in the Osun local government debacle and in other cases, particularly during the last presidential election petition matters, did not start today. The only difference is that it was limited to the courtroom then. Now, it has been brought to the marketplace. Incidentally, Jankara is the name of a popular market in Lagos, where buyers and sellers, must be at alert in order not to be duped. Otherwise, either party may end up being shortchanged.

In other words, some lawyers through their Jankara way attempt to con their colleagues and the Judge, as well, so as to obtain justice at all costs. Those who call lawyers liars may be right after all. What is happening in the Osun case has shown some lawyers for who and what they are. And these are the same lawyers who go all over the place, preaching on how to make society better.

How can a lawyer or his association that is not true to himself or itself be true to the society? Honesty is an innate quality. It is either you have it or you do not have it. What do you say of a lawyer who cannot disclose that he is involved in a case, but goes on air to analyse the same case for the viewing audience? What do you say of the NBA that comments on a case that is in court and takes sides with one of the parties? Is that a bar association? A union of motor drivers will do better than that!

NBA has since turned itself into a “busybody” in many matters. It has become a tool for blackmail and it is manipulated by many lawyers and politicians to fight their battles. At the bottom of it all is filthy lucre. There is nothing some lawyers and NBA cannot do for money.

Their deployment of Jankaraism in the Osun council case is a big shame. Yet, they call themselves ministers in the temple of justice! Ministers? Do they truly understand the halo around the name that they cherish but desecrate with so much impunity? With ministers like these, can a nation ever be saved?

These lawyers and NBA should allow the court to do its work without let or hindrance.

Osun LG crisis: APM berates Ozekhome over ‘incorrect’ review of Court verdict

The Allied Peoples Movement(APM) on Friday has berated a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mike Ozekhome over incorrect interpretation of verdicts of Appeal Court on control of councils in Osun State.

In a judgment delivered on February 10th 2025, the Appeal Court reinstated the All Progressives Congress (APC) elected Local Government chairmen and councilors earlier sacked by two Federal High Court verdicts, while other Appeal(APP case) was dismissed on June 13.

Meanwhile, Ozekhome in a letter written to Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi which he copied the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) and security operatives said that Appeal Court never made any consequential order in favour of APC, noting that PDP elected officials of February 22nd 2025 are legal controllers of the councils.

However, APM in a statement signed by its chairman, Hon. Adewale Adebayo demanded an apology from Ozekhome for attempting to lead the public astray on the LG control crisis.

He said: “The review of the SAN exposed that he(Ozekhome) does not have much understanding of legal intricacies involved. Verdicts of FHC/OS/CS/94/2022 (PDP) and FHC/OS/103/2022 (APP) was delivered in November 2022. APM was joined in APP’s case and at the Appeal it was struck out for want of prosecution in January.

Osun LG crisis: OSIEC, PDP chairman drag IGP to court over alleged planned arrest

    …demand N2bn damages

Amid the ongoing Osun State local government crisis, the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC), Hashim Abioye, has taken legal action against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, over an alleged plan to arrest him.

Similarly, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun, Sunday Bisi, has also sued the IGP over a similar alleged arrest plot.

In suit FHC/OS/CS/41/2025, Abioye is seeking N2 billion in damages and the enforcement of his fundamental human rights as guaranteed under Sections 35(1)(6), 36, 41, 44, and 46 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

As part of the relief sought, he asked the court to bar the IGP from arresting or detaining him over the conduct of the February 22, 2025, local government election in the state.

Additionally, Abioye urged the court to order the IGP and the Osun Commissioner of Police to immediately unseal the OSIEC office, release detained staff, and allow access to the premises, insisting that the election was peaceful, free, and fair.

“An order directing all the defendants jointly and severally to pay to the plaintiffs a sum of N2 Billion as damages, for instigating the breach and actual breach of the fundamental rights of the plaintiffs and her staff to liberty, dignity and private life.”

Also, PDP chair in suit number FHC/OS/CS/42/2025 urged the Federal High Court to stop the planned arrest by IGP, noting that he has not committed any crime known to the law.

The Nation recalled that Sunday Bisi had alleged IGP of plotting the assassination of Governor Ademola Adeleke at the twilight of the February 22nd 2025 local government election.

Osun LG crisis: The real victims are the people

Sir: The battle for local government seats in Osun State continued last Saturday with elections into various offices, despite warnings from the Attorney General and the Inspector General of Police. One may not blame Governor Jackson Adeleke for proceeding, as he had secured a High Court judgment in Ilesa, affirming the legality of the election. Following the polls, the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) announced that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had won all contested seats—an outcome that surprised few observers.

What should be of greater concern is the number of avoidable lives lost in this debacle. In the aftermath of the recent election, I have sadly watched as “thieves” congratulate “thieves” and former “usurpers” antagonize the present “usurpers.” We now live in a world steeped in hypocrisy, where the corrupt celebrate their kind while the naive and gullible masses are duped into taking sides. The corrupt elite masterfully manipulate public opinion, fuel divisive rhetoric, and turn citizens against one another.

However, beyond the electoral outcome, concerns have mounted over the violence that accompanied the process, leading to loss of lives. Among the casualties was Remi Abass, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the reinstated chairman of Irewole Local Government. According to reports, Abass was killed while on his way to assume office. This is notwithstanding cases of many political actors that escaped assassinations in broad daylight.

At the Fidau prayer held on the third day to supplicate for Remi Abass, an Islamic cleric delivered a thought-provoking message. He reminded the gathering that beyond political affiliations, communities suffer when violence escalates. He urged the people to look beyond the artificial divide of PDP versus APC, reminding them of a harsher reality: “Omo Ikire pa Omo Ikire” meaning an Ikire indigene had killed a fellow Ikire indigene. His words were not meant to incite inter-town conflict but to expose the needless divisions that politics has sown among the people.

The voices of reason and morality are drowned out by the cacophony of partisan politics and special interests. With each election cycle, parties interpret the law to suit their interests, while citizens are caught in the crossfire. I pity the people of Osun, especially those complicit in their own oppression, blindly supporting those who undermine their collective well-being.

My call is to those still willing to listen to the voice of reason. The call to action is clear: do not die in their war. Refuse to be pawns in the games of the powerful, who manipulate divisions to tighten their grip on wealth and influence. They will stoke tensions, exploit your emotions, and incite conflicts that benefit only themselves. Yet, when the dust settles, it is not they who will bear the scars—it is you, the ordinary citizens, who will suffer the losses.

As tensions persist, there is an urgent need for reflection and restraint. Political actors must prioritize governance over personal or party interests, while citizens should resist being drawn into conflicts that do not serve their long-term interests. Elections should be a means to strengthen democracy, not an excuse for violence and division. All in Osun must recognize that the future of Osun — and indeed, the nation, depends on breaking free from this vicious cycle of manipulation and deceit. In an equitable society, power is wielded with integrity, and leadership is truly accountable to the people.

Osun LG crisis: Reinstated chairmen resume offices, issue ultimatum to striking workers

…Adeleke flays APC over allegations of Makinde, Bala of importing thugs to Osun

Barely 24 hours after Governor Ademola Adeleke swore in newly elected council executives, reinstated local government chairmen and councillors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) returned to their offices on Monday, directing striking workers to resume work before Wednesday.

The crisis over control of councils had turned violent last week, leading to the deaths of six people, including one of the reinstated chairmen. In response, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) state chairman, Comrade Chris Arapasopo, declared a strike, citing safety concerns for workers.

Following the swearing-in of newly elected council executives from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Governor Adeleke had ordered them to stay away from the councils until the dispute was resolved.

However, on Monday, the reinstated APC executives took control of the local government secretariats across the state, with armed policemen stationed at the gates. The Nation observed the presence of APC officials in councils such as Boripe, Osogbo, Olorunda, Ifelodun, and Boluwaduro.

Confirming the development, APC chieftain Jamiu Olawumi stated, “We have resumed in all local government areas of the state. The authentic chairmen have even issued a 72-hour ultimatum to striking council workers to return to their posts.”

Meanwhile, in a memo referenced NLC/OSS/SEC/VOL. 5/005, NLC chairman Arapasopo reiterated that workers’ safety is non-negotiable, directing them to continue withdrawing their services amid the ongoing political turmoil.

“NLC remains resolute in its commitment to defending the rights and interests of workers and the masses. We shall not be cowed or intimidated by these desperate attempts to silence us. We stand firm in our resolve to uphold justice, fairness, and the rule of law in our beloved state.”

The Osun State Chairman of Allied Peoples Movement(APM), Hon. Adebayo Adewale also cautioned Adeleke against using the state allocation to bankroll the newly elected Chairmen and councillors.

He described the newly elected council executives as ‘sit-at-home’ chairmen and councillors.

According to him “We are so displeased with our governor, Adeleke for breaching the constitution he sworn to uphold. He flaunted Court of Appeal verdict despite warnings from the Federal government and IGP.

“When the governor openly kicked against the law, how would Rule of law reign in Osun State. When the governor is lawless what moral justification would he have to preach orderliness?

“It is our strong advice that our governor, should not use state allocation to fund illegal council sit-at-home chairmen because we are sure that FG will stop money going to the councils amid the crisis,” Adebayo remark.

APC through Director of Media and Information, Chief Kola Olabisi in a statement alleged that “Adeleke has concluded plans to attack the legally-reinstated chairmen and councillors through Amotekun Corps and non-state actors imported from Oyo State and the Niger Delta.

“The intelligence information available at our disposal indicated that the governor’s political dynasty currently headed by the business mogul, Dr Deji Adeleke, were displeased with the national embarrassment and media backlash experienced on account of the charade election conducted by the government.

“Our discoveries also fingered the Chairman of PDP Governor’s Forum, Senator Bala Muhammed and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde as part of the plots to stoke crises and inflame Osun State in order to criminalize and demonize President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“We call on the people not to take Governor Adeleke serious. That has been his antics. He will issue a peace-prone directive and at the end would be promoting violence underground.”

Meanwhile, Adeleke said he has proven to be a crisis manager with an eye on public peace and prosperity, hence the sustenance of peace across the state despite the evil plot of anarchists within the opposition.

Adeleke though his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed in a statement described the allegations of APC as “a baseless concoction without any iota of truth. From the beginning of the face off, the state Governor, being a security expert and a criminologist, had deployed his skills of conflict resolution to sustain peace even with the worst of provocations.”

“The mapping of the entire state revealed that the opposition APC was mainly interested in burning the state down and destroying the elected political structures. Mr Governor smartly denied the APC the fuel for its arsonistic plan.”

“The outcome is the peace we are enjoying today in Osun state. Osun people are peacefully running their lives with huge gratitude to the Governor. The APC on the contrary is in severe pain for all its destructive plans against Osun and her people have failed.”

“So the opposition resorted to blackmail and name calling. Neither the visiting governors nor our Chief of Staff imported any hoodlums into the state.”

He explained: “Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Muhammed came to Osun on a solidarity peace mission based on their statutory positions within the Governors’ Forum and their message was that parties to the face off should abide by the rule of law and avoid illegal self-help.”
