Police warn politicians against sabotage of Osun LG workers’ resumption

The Osun State Police Command has warned politicians and other interest groups against any act of sabotage against the planned resumption of local government workers across the state on January 5, stressing that it will not tolerate actions that could disrupt peace, public order, or the smooth functioning of council activities.

The leadership of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees(NULGE) had announced that its members will resume their duties after 11 months strike action over the battle for the control of council areas between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party(PDP).

The spokesperson of the state police command, Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, in a statement on Friday, stated that credible intelligence indicated that certain ‘unscrupulous’ politicians are planning to disrupt the peaceful resumption of duties by local government employees at various council secretariats.

“The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, CP Ibrahim Gotan, hereby warns that any individual who is not a bonafide staff member of the local government authorities must refrain from approaching or loitering around the secretariats. Personnel(police operatives) have been directed to deal firmly and professionally with anyone attempting to incite unrest or cause disturbances.

“The Command will not permit miscreants to undermine the peace and tranquillity that have been diligently sustained in the state.”

He reassured residents of Osun State of the command’s unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property, as he vowed that operatives will continue to discharge their constitutional duties with vigilance and professionalism.

He urged residents to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and cooperate with security agencies, and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station or through these numbers and social media handle: Control Room numbers: 08039537995/ 08123823981, Complaint Response Unit (CRU) numbers: 08035143235/08066286549/08030732461.”

Low turnout as Osun LG workers resume after eight-month strike

There was a low turnout of local government workers across Osun State on Monday as they officially resumed work after an eight-month strike over the control crisis between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) had been on strike since February 17, 2025, following an Appeal Court judgment reinstating APC chairmen — a decision opposed by the PDP, which had earlier conducted its own council elections and installed its members.

The prolonged impasse left council offices under lock and key until the Federal Government recently recognized the reinstated APC chairmen and released six months of withheld allocations to the accounts operated by them. In response, the Association of Concerned Local Government Workers fixed October 6, 2025, for their resumption.

Ahead of the resumption, police authorities assured residents and workers of adequate security across council areas.

When The Nation monitored activities on Monday, workers were seen resuming duties in local government areas such as Osogbo, Olorunda, Ifelodun, Boripe, Ayedire, Obokun, and Ilesa West — all under heavy security presence.

Despite this, turnout remained low in several locations.

Chairman of Olorunda LGA, Hon. Kunle Kudaisi, dismissed claims that the council had been completely shut since February, explaining that while political officeholders had continued working, NULGE members only formally resumed on Monday.

“Many workers could not resume today because they went to the state secretariat for their promotion letters,” Kudaisi said, expressing gratitude that “the rancor is now over in Osun State.”

At Olorunda, a worker, Mrs. Kuburat Aderemi, said she was excited to return to work, noting that the strike had denied staff access to cooperative deductions and other benefits.

Ifelodun LGA Chairman, Hon. Hassan Kamo, also welcomed staff back, saying, “Civil servants are the landlords of local government secretariats while we, politicians, are only tenants. I’m glad to see them resuming after eight months.”

Boripe Council Chairman, Hon. Sikiru Odebunmi, pledged continued commitment to the safety and security of all workers under his administration.

Attempts to speak with the APC factional Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (APC), Abiodun Idowu, were abortive as he refused to pick up his calls and respond to text messages sent to his phone as at the time of filing this report.

Osun LG workers panic over possible stoppage of federal allocations

Local government workers across Osun State have expressed fear over possible stoppage of allocation by Federal Government after the State failed to conduct council elections.

The Nation recalled the Supreme Court granted financial autonomy to LGAs across Nigeria and ordered the FG should not pay allocation to LGAs who failed to elect executives at councils by October 11, 2024.

Osun council election is scheduled to hold in February 22, 2025.

After failure to meet the deadline, local government workers in Osun State are afraid their salaries may not be paid.

A staff of Olorunda council, who simply identified herself as Kafayat said: “We don’t know our fate for this month, now that federal government said they will not pay our allocation. There are no elected executives till now.”

Another LG staff in Osogbo Council Ade implored FG not to stop the allocation, adding it will lead to more hardship for the workers.

A worker in Boripe LGA, who pleaded not to be named, admonished Governor Ademola Adeleke to absorb Chairmen elected under the administration of Adegboyega Oyetola in 2022 pending the 2025 election.
