…APC reinstated chairmen may conduct staff auditing for salary payment

Council workers in Osun State have announced they will return to work on Monday, October 6, 2025, ending a strike that began in February following a protracted dispute over the control of local government secretariats.

The strike was triggered after elected chairmen from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) both laid claim to the councils following a Court of Appeal verdict, prompting the Federal Government to withhold allocations to the LGAs.

However, the offices of the Minister of Finance, Attorney-General of the Federation, Accountant General, and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) later recognised the APC reinstated chairmen and directed them to open accounts for all 30 LGAs, leading to the release of funds.

Speaking in Osogbo on Thursday, the Association of Concerned Local Government Workers of Osun State, led by Comrade Adedayo Adekunle, declared readiness to resume duties, describing the seven-month strike action declared by the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) as needless.

Adekunle lamented that the prolonged industrial action had led to the death of some of their colleagues, stressing that resumption was necessary to restore normalcy to council operations across the state.

He said, “This is the best time for autonomy, but some disgruntled elements under the disguise of comrades are working against it. The excuse of insecurity given for strike action is not tenable; we are landlords of the council Secretariat. The ongoing legal actions should not make us abscond from our duty posts and yet receive a salary from the state government. The strike action is unwarranted.”

Adekunle hinted that workers who failed to resume duty risk degradation and job loss as the reinstated chairmen of APC may conduct staff auditing after their resumption on Monday to ascertain the actual workers before paying them salary forthwith.

He urged the reinstated chairmen to prioritise the welfare of council workers, warning that the union will continue to fight for the rights of its members at any time and time of resumption.

Meanwhile, NULGE, through its State Publicity Secretary, David Owoeye, in a statement, kicked against the planned resumption of workers, saying, “We have not ordered any worker to resume duty; our safety is paramount.”

Osun LG crisis: We are yet to receive alert for withheld council allocation—ALGON chair

The Chairman of Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State, Abidoun Idowu, has said that the All Progressives Congress(APC) chairmen are yet to receive the seven months withheld allocation.

The APC officials, wo were elected in October 2022, were sacked by Governor Ademola Adeleke after a Federal Court nullified the election. However, in February 2025, the Court of Appeal reinstated them.

Despite this, PDP members were sworn in as council executives following the February 22 local government poll, leaving both parties claiming control.

Since then, local government workers under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) have been on strike, while federal allocations remain withheld.

In his reaction to the speculation that the allocation has been released into the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), accounts opened for the APC faction, Idowu said fingers are crossed over the fund.

He said: “We heard the rumour just like you, but we are yet to receive alert for the fund. We learnt that the money have been released but we are yet to receive alerts.

“We are hopeful, once we receive it, the fund will be deploy for the development of our grassroots and a kobo of it will not be lost.”

When the ALGON chairman for PDP, Sarafadeen Awotunde was contacted, he said he was not available for any reaction on the matter as he is bereaved

APC to FG: don’t release Osun LG allocation

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the federal government to withhold allocations meant for local government councils in Osun State until judicially reinstated elected officials assume office.

The party condemned last Saturday’s local government election in the state, accusing Governor Ademola Adeleke of violating his oath of office by conducting the polls.

APC also alleged that the governor and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were disrupting peace by refusing to comply with the February 10, 2025, Court of Appeal ruling that ordered the reinstatement of sacked elected local government officials.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka described the election as “illegal and unconstitutional.”

According to Morka, “The purported last Saturday’s fresh election conducted by Governor Adeleke and his PDP is nothing but a disgraceful sham, illegal, unconstitutional and violently contemptuous of the valid and subsisting judgment of the Court of Appeal, and of no effect whatsoever. The exercise was a reckless waste of public funds, and an irresponsible  incitement to further violence in an already volatile atmosphere in the state.”

The APC spokesman noted that the appellate court in its ruling on February 10, 2025, overturned a Federal High Court judgment that nullified the election of APC-backed local government officials in 2022.

The Appeal Court declared the Federal High Court’s decision incompetent and ordered the reinstatement of the sacked officials until their term expires in October 2025.

Instead of complying with the ruling, APC accused Adeleke of proceeding with fresh elections in defiance of the court’s order.

Faulting the governor, Morka said his action was a “flagrant breach” of his oath of office and accused him of “reckless political provocation” that has already led to violent unrest and loss of lives in Osun State.

APC also frowned at the appointment of the caretaker committees to run local councils after dismissing elected officials in 2022, describing the action unconstitutional and a violation of Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees democratically elected local government councils.

“Why is it so difficult for Governor Adeleke, who swore an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution, to abide by a valid order of the Court of Appeal?” the statement queried. “Why is the Governor so determined to incite anarchy in Osun State with impunity?”

The party then called on security agencies in the state to ensure law and order amid rising tensions.

While reiterating its commitment to the rule of law, the APC challenged Adeleke to seek redress at the Supreme Court instead of taking “unconstitutional shortcuts” that could further destabilize the state.

The party also urged Osun local government workers to continue their duties under the reinstated chairmen and councillors while calling for immediate compliance with the Court of Appeal’s judgment.

“In keeping with the rule of law, it is our expectation that the Federal Government will make federal allocation for local governments available only to democratically elected and judicially certified local government officials in Osun state,” Morka insisted.
