Osun bye-election: APC, PDP chieftains confident of parties’ victory

Chieftains of the APC and PDP, the two leading parties contesting in the  Osun West bye-election, have expressed confidence that their respective parties would win the election.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) shortly after casting his vote at about  9 am at Ward 4, Unit 5, Gbongan Polling Unit,  Ayedade Local Government Area, APC chieftain, Mr Ismaila Alagbada, said the party had left no stone unturned in ensuring its victory.

“Our party had taken all necessary steps and our expectation is victory. we expect nothing short of victory,’’ Alagbada, the Osun Commissioner for Commerce, Trade and Co-operatives, said.

Mr Dotun Babayemi, another APC chieftain in  Gbongan,  also said he was confident his party’s  candidate, Sen. Mudashiru Hussein,  would win the Osun West Senatorial seat.

Babayemi said this at St. Peter, Otun Balogun Ward 2, Unit One,  where he did his accreditation and also voted.

“We are very confident the APC and its candidate will be successful.

“ Our party had launched series of  campaign in the town and the entire local government to create awareness for this election,’’ he said.

In his own assessment of the election, Sen. Akinlabi Olasunkanmi, a one-term PDP senator and former Minister of Youth Development, said the bye-election would favour the PDP.

Olasunkanmi,  who voted at Ward 5 Unit 16,  in Ode-Omu, Ayedade Local Government Area , however,  expressed the hope that there would not be voters’ apathy.

He urged INEC to remain independent and neutral to ensure a credible poll.

” If there is a level playing ground, I am quite confident our party’s candidate will be elected senator,’’ he said.

NAN reports that all the party chieftains, however, agreed that the ongoing election was orderly and peaceful.

They lauded INEC for the new system of accreditation and voting, saying with the process, voters spend less than two minutes to get accredited and cast their votes.

They were all of the opinion that the process had  encouraged  a high turnout of voters for the election.

The election was prompted by the death on April 23 of  Sen. Isiaka Adeleke, who was representing the district at the Senate.

Although 12 political parties are contesting in the bye- election, the two major contenders are the  PDP  and  APC.

The younger brother of late Adeleke, Ademola, is the candidate of  PDP  while Mudashiru Husein, who represented the district between 2011 and 2014,  is the candidate of  APC.

Odigie-Oyegun said the prevailing economic situation was not created by APC, adding that the federal government was working day and night to solve the problems.

“APC will not disappoint Nigeria, and I want you all in the senatorial district to troop out and vote for our candidate, Mudashiru Husain,’’ he said.

“I hope in the next four days I will be able to tell President Muhammadu Buhari that Aregbesola has delivered once again and Husain is back in the Senate.

He commended the courage of the Governor Rauf Aregbesola, saying Osun was a major ground from where the APC launched itself to the federal level.

According to Odigie-Oyegun, Osun is strategic to the party in all ramifications.

“I want you to know how important this election is to us, and that is why you can see me and all other party members here.

“As challenging as the situation in Borno is, the Governor, Kashim Shettima and the Kebbi Governor, Abdullahi Bagudu, came here to support us all.

“We need Mudashiru Husain in the Senate, he is a ranking man.  He won’t sit at the back when he gets there. Osun will be represented well,” Odigie-Oyegun added.

  • Osun West bye- election: APC, PDP postpone primaries

The All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election in Osun West senatorial district has been postponed till Wednesday.

The postponement was the second in the last three days.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has also rescheduled its own primary for same day.

The spokesman for APC in Osun State, Kunle Oyatomi, said the last postponement was due to Monday night’s decision of the party National Working Committee (NWC) to allow one of the two aspirants, Mudashiru Hussain, to participate in the primary.

The party national screening committee led by the Speaker of Zamfara State House of Assembly, Hon. Sanusi Rikiji, on Sunday disqualified Hussain over his failure to resign as the state Commissioner for Cabinet Matters.

Rikiji said Hussain was disqualified because the party guide lines stipulated that a candidate must not “remain as an employee of the public service 30 days to the election.”

But Hussain claimed he has resigned his appointment and submitted his letter to Governor Rauf Aregbesola on June 6.

Hussain and younger brother to late Isiaka Adeleke, Ademola are participating the primary election.

The PDP Director of Publicity in Osun, Prince Bola Ajao, said the postponement was to allow the party to put its house in order.

A former Minister Youth of Development, Olasunkanmi Akinlabi, and a retired army colonel, Olayiwola Falabi, are eyeing the PDP ticket for the senatorial bye-election.
