    Osun inaugurates Anthony Udofia School

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has hailed civil servants for not falling prey to what he called “the infernal political schemes of failed politicians who have been rejected at the polls”.

He spoke yesterday at the inauguration of the Anthony Udofia Government Elementary School in Osogbo, the state capital, Osogbo.

The state’s former Military Governor, Anthony Udofia, was in town to witness the unveiling of what was a ramshackle school and now a world class learning environment.

The complex can seat 960 pupils with 24 classrooms of 40 pupils each, an ICT room, a library, multi-purpose hall, 29 toilets, offices for head teachers, facility manager, staff room, food court, sick bay, security/reception office and a fountain for aesthetics.

The governor held that his administration is building 100 elementary schools that can compete with the best in the world.

He said: “I am happy and fulfilled that we have public schools that can compete with the best in the world and indeed, our new schools are the ones to beat around here.

“All these are in fulfillment of our promise to provide functional basic education for the pupils. This stems from our conviction that every child is owed basic education. It is a fundamental and inalienable right of every child.

“Basic education is basic, pardon my tautology. A good basic education fulfills the definition of literacy as the ability to read and write and is a solid foundation on which other superstructure of vocational training or higher education can be built upon.”

Aregbesola described as ignorant and unreasonable the idea of reducing workers to pay salaries.

He added that his government is conscious of its legal and moral obligations to workers, yet the truth is that workers are less than five per cent of the population.

“The idea therefore that all state’s resources must be spent on workers alone is insane, unsustainable and impossible.

“Some set of people have been inciting workers and pensioners to rebellion, subversion and sabotage, with the intent of destabilising the state and disrupting the peace of our communities.

“In the past, they have made futile attempts to precipitate religious crisis by inciting Christians against Muslims in the state. It did not fly. They have also made repeated but failed efforts at inciting Civil Servants against the government”.

He stated that government is constructing 100 brand new Elementary Schools, 50 Middle Schools and 20 High Schools, out of which 14 Elementary Schools, 15 Middle Schools and 11 High Schools have been completed or receiving finishing touches and awaiting commissioning.

Udofia commended Aregbesola for his love for the upliftment of education in the state.

Udofia noted that education must not be left in the hands of private investors only, saying government schools if well taken care of can compete favourably with any private school in the country.

Dignitaries at the commissioning ceremony includes; the former governor of the state, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Grace Titilayo Laoye-Tomori, Osun Deputy Speaker, Hon, Akintunde Adegboye?, Secretary to the Government of Osun, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti and the Chief of Staff to Governor Aregbesola, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola.

Others are Chief Judge of Osun, Mrs. Adepele Ojo, former Chief of Staff to Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Elder Peter Babalola, Chairman of All Progressive Congress (APC) in Osun, Prince Gboyega Famodun, Juju Maestro, King Sunny Ade amongst other dignitaries.

    Osun sacks 150 college workers

More than 150 workers of the Osun State Colleges of Education in Ilesa and Ila-Orangun have been sacked.

Sack letters were said to have been handed over to the academic and non academic staff of the institutions across various caders.

Eighty five workers of the College of Education Ilesa were given sack letters and sixty nine in the College of Education, Ila.

It was learnt that the State Polytechnic, Iree and state College of Technology were not affected by the sack.

The Director, Bureau of Communication in the Office of the Governor, Semiu Okanlawon, said those affected were workers employed by the managements of the two colleges and not by the government.

According to him, the termination of the workers’ appointments had long been decided, adding that “giving out letters to the affected staff now is just the conclusion of the process”.

The Academic Staff Unions of both institutions have notified the government of readiness to take “any necessary action” against the sack.

Also, the Council of Academic Staff Unions of Osun State owned Tertiary Institutions has directed members not to “collect any sack letter”.

In a statement by its Chairman and Secretary, Lasisi Jimoh, and Lana Olusegun, the union alleged that the government had failed to address “festering issues despite the unions’ several pleas and ultimatum”.

The union said that a congress will soon hold to decide the next line of action.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)  in collaboration with the Osun State College of Education, Ilesa has implored the Osun State government to adopt the 2004 Universal Basic Education (UBE) policy to accommodate pre-schoolers.

The policy mandates every public primary school to have a pre-primary school linkage to cater for children aged three to five.

In a communiqué signed by the Drafting Committee’s chairman and secretary, Wahab Ibrahim, and Mrs. Adebola Olayinka, the participants agreed that stakeholders should pay an advocacy visit to the Osun State House of Assembly to sensitise its members on the importance of early childhood education.

The training for stakeholders of pre-primary education drawn from schools, communities across the 30 local government areas of the state and the media had about 50 participants, who urged the Rauf Aregbesola administration to take advantage of all UNICEF’s assisted early childhood education in Nigeria.

They said the trainers and the caregivers linked with the programme should be adequately equipped.

  • $2.1b arms cash: Ex-minister flees over Osun, Ekiti polls

$2.1b arms cash: Ex-minister flees over Osun, Ekiti polls

EFCC traces N1.450b to four firms

Official says PDP got funds for election

How much of the $2.1 billion arms purchase cash went into the Ekiti and Osun states governorship elections?

What role did a former minister play in the alleged diversion of the funds?

These are some of the questions the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is battling to answer in its probe of the phoney arms deals that set the treasury back by millions of dollars.

The cash was wired into the former minister’s accounts, the anti-graft agency is believed to have discovered.

Governorship elections were held in Ekiti (June 2014) and in Osun (August 2014).

But the former minister, one of the leading lights of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southwest, has sneaked out of the country.

It was learnt that he may relocate from his hideout  because it is considered as “unsafe” for him.

There are fears that if he remains in the hideout, his extradition for trial would be easier, a source told The Nation.

The source said: “The huge funds were paid into the accounts of the ex-Minister for elections in the two states.

“There are allegations that the funds were not disbursed as expected because the candidates had their own campaign funds.

“Although some military and security personnel were to benefit from the slush funds, they were also shortchanged.”

Some bankers who managed the accounts have already given some information to EFCC investigators.

“But we have discovered that the ex-Minister has sneaked out of the country. As soon as we establish his whereabouts, we know what to do,” the source said.

The Nation could not reach the former minister last night.

It was gathered that another N1.450billion fraud had been uncovered by the EFCC following revelations by one of the accused persons on trial.

The discovery is contained in the heap of evidence filed in the court by EFCC for the trial of 10 suspects.

The money was paid into some accounts which were submitted by a “former Accountant-General” whose identity the suspect in the Office of the National Security Adviser(ONSA) refused to disclose.

“I could remember the following companies and account numbers were submitted by the former Accountant -General which we paid monies into. Below are the companies and amounts so far paid: Stellavera Dev Company(N300m); First Aralac Global Limited(N300m); First Aralac Global Limited(N100m); Damaris Mode(N300m);  Stellavera Dev Company(N200m) and Whese Farms Ltd(N250m).

“I was directed to pay monies into the above accounts. I do not know what the monies were meant for, “ the accused person said.

Meanwhile, a Staff Officer, Account 1, Yazidu Ibrahim has disclosed that most payments from the ONSA were meant to pursue the PDP presidential election.

He claims to have payment vouchers of all funds remitted to PDP beneficiaries, companies and contractors.

He made the disclosures in a statement made to EFCC as a witness.

Ibrahim said: “My duties include recording financial transactions and to keep custody of all duplicate copies  of financial transactions. Also to prepare bank reconciliation statements and to collect statements from all banks.

“The year 2014-2015 transactions were mainly to support the presidential election of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Those payments to contractors or individuals by deposit into their accounts were based on instructions from the DFA. The tellers are attached to the payment vouchers.

“All payments to contractors are based on directive from DFA. Sometimes, there is accompanying  document; most times, there is  nothing except account details of contractors.”

“This is a good idea by the governor as a way of giving back to the public; considering the economic situation he still did it.

  • Seven-day ultimatum for Osun’s striking doctors

The Osun State government has given striking medical doctors seven days to resume or be sacked.

In a public service announcement on behalf of the government, the Permanent Secretary, Human Resources and Capacity Building,  Sunday Festus Olajide, said whoever failed to resume at the end of the ultimatum, which started last Friday, would be considered to have voluntarily resigned from the public service.

The government berated the doctors for what it called their inconsideration.

According to the announcement, despite series of appeals from the government to doctors of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (Lautech) Teaching Hospital, Osogbo and other government health institutions, the striking doctors have remained adamant.

The government lamented that the doctors have received their salaries in the last two months.

Declaring the strike is illegal, the government said it did not follow due process, thereby breaching the professional Hippocratic Oath.
