  • Financial crisis: OSUSTECH adopts new mode of salary payment

The Ondo state-owned University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH) Okitipupa is facing financial difficulties that may affect the smooth running of the institution.

The University was recently renamed after former Ondo State governor, late Dr. Olusegun Agagu, who established the institution nine years ago.

The Nation learnt the management of the University presently pays only salaries without deductions in a bid to keep the institution afloat.

Sources at the University noted that its subvention up to March 2019, while salary payment was up to May 2019.

It was also gathered that the salary payment had been funded from Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) which excluded some allowances.

A source from the bursary department of the University said salary payment for June and subsequent ones would be paid after all arrears are settled and IGR was sufficient enough to add to the monthly subvention received.

The Nation learnt that workers who supported the augmented salary payment structure, in agreement with the Unions, were mandated to put down their names and signatures.

It was learnt that the management had pleaded with the staff to manage their past earnings, while the period tough lasted.

A Memo dated June 10, from Bursary department of the University where the information was circulated has been reportedly sent to all sections to intimate them of the present situation.

The new Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo could not be reached for comments on the development at OSUSTECH.

  • Akeredolu to rename OSUSTECH after Agagu

Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has said that the Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH) would be renamed after former Governor of the state, Late Olusegun Agagu.

Akeredolu disclosed this during a thank-you tour to Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo Southern Senatorial District.

He explained that the two newly-elected House of Assembly members representing Okitipupa 1 and 11 constituencies, Akineogunde Akinfomide and Akinwumi Emmanuel would move the motion for the renaming of the University to Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa.

According to the governor, it is a decision that can only be taken by the House of Assembly and they would move the motion as their first assignment.

He said“You know we have Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba and it won’t be bad to have Olusegun Agagu University in Okitipupa.

“When we came on board, we noticed that the University lacked infrastructural facilities, a good road network and other areas which we looked into and fixed.

“The project would have been added to the museum of abandoned projects, hence the need for the major upgrades by this administration”.

Akeredolu who thanked the people for conducting themselves in a peaceful manner during the election, lauded them and sought for their continued support for the party.

  • OSUSTECH students protest colleague’s death

STudents of Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH), Okitipupa have protested the death of their colleague.

They reportedly blocked Okitipupa-Igbokoda Road, disrupting traffic.

The deceased, identified as Rotimi Olabisi, a 500-level student of Ekiti State University, who came to visit his friend at OSUSTECH, was said to have been knocked down last weekend by a vehicle while attempting to cross the road in front of the school gate.

The students were said to have expressed dismay over the alleged nonchalant attitude of the institution authority over the security of the students.

They vowed to continue the protest until something drastic was done to reduce incessant deaths on the highway, which the students described as too many in recent time.

The students called on the school authorities to erect a speed limit breaker in front of the school main gate, to prevent recurrence.

They also demanded among other things, a police post, improved transport system, accommodation facilities and others.

The Registrar, Philip Akinlusi, sympathised with the students, but described their protest as mischievous.

He said the school authorities would begin the erection of speed limit breakers latest today, which he believed the Students’ Union Government was aware of.

Akinlusi said the students should go home for two weeks to allow the completion of the speed limit breakers.

  • OSUSTECH matriculates 1,610

The Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH), Okitipupa has admitted 1,610 students.

They were matriculated into Faculties of Engineering and Engineering Technology, Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources as well as Science during the institution’s eighth matriculation.

The institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Sunday Ogunduyilemi hailed Governor Oluwarotimi  Akeredolu for his prompt intervention in solving the institution’s problems.

Oguduyilemi drew the attention of the gathering to the smooth road on which they rode from the University gate to the main campus and the efforts of the government at increasing the faculties of the institution.

Explaining how fortunate the students were to be admitted, the VC said: “It is a privilege that you are seated here to take your matriculation oath. You know very well that there are some of your mates who are more brilliant, but they lacked sponsors to help them.

“There are also those who have sponsors, but they could not scale the hurdles of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The VC reminded the freshers of the 4Ds-Dedication, Discipline, Determination and Diligence – and admonished them to shun bad company, which could lead to their initiation into cultism and other vices.

He counselled them against night crawling and allowing themselves to be pawns in the hands of politicians as the 2019 general elections drew near.

  • OSUSTECH ‘ll rank among the best, says Odugbemi

OSUSTECH ‘ll rank among the best, says Odugbemi

Professor of Medicine and Parasitology, Tolu Odugbemi, completed his tenure as the foundation vice chancellor of the Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH) last month with a desire that the institution would rank among the best universities of technology in the world within a decade.

Odugbemi, who was employed to salvage the institution from pre-mature death in 2010 as a result of its inability to start operation three years after being issued an operating licence by the National Universities Commission (NUC), has prepared ground for his successor to achieve this aim.

In an interview, Odugbemi said the goal was the mandate given by the Ondo State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, when he was appointed vice chancellor.

“The dream of His Excellency, the Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko is to make OSUSTECH a model and one of the best universities of technology in the world.  The management of OSUSTECH has therefore been making frantic effort to make the university truly world class and one that will compete favourably with other notable institutions across the globe.

Therefore, I desire to see OSUSTECH after five years to be ranked among the foremost universities of technology in Nigeria.  I equally expect to see OSUSTECH in a decade’s time to be among the best universities of technology in the world where meaningful research outputs are being turned out for sustainable growth and development of the country,” he said.

In keeping with that goal, and with funding support of the government, Odugbemi said the university was able to recruit qualified workers, relocate to its permanent site in Igbokoda in record time, establish well-equipped laboratories and run the university farms, which have been crucial to the success of its entrepreneurship programme.

The university, under his watch, also encouraged research in areas relevant to local needs and enhanced its relationship with the host community, which benefits from the many products of the farms.

Odugbemi said: “OSUSTECH made history as one of the few universities in Nigeria that moved to its permanent site in a record time of two years after commencement of academic programmes in January, 2011. This was made possible with the support of Mr. Governor and his Government.  All the laboratories in the university are well-equipped with modern and state-of-the-art equipment. Modern university is about teaching, learning, research and community service. To this end, we encourage research in applied sciences among staff in such areas as solar energy, biogas, fertilizer production and soap and cosmetics production.

“All the academic programmes being run in OSUSTECH have been accredited by the NUC. The University played host to the NUC accreditation teams between Monday, February, 25 and Wednesday, March 6, 2013. Industrial Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Geophysics, Microbiology, Zoology, Botany, Fisheries and Computer Science had full accreditation while one programme, Biochemistry, had interim accreditation.

The various laboratories, equipment and facilities at the University Libraries and Farms were adjudged adequate during the accreditation exercise. Efforts are also underway to start off the Faculties of Agriculture and Engineering. The Academic Briefs for the proposed Facilities had been prepared and made ready for submission to the NUC for approval. The TETFund too, had started the furnishing and equipping of Engineering workshops and laboratories in the University.”

One area of success that the university currently enjoys is the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Leadership Training (CELT), which Odugbemi said provides training in 21 vocational skills for students once in a week.  The centre has spawned products the university is now proud of, including its bottled fruit juice drink.

“The ultimate aim of this Centre is to inculcate practical training skills in our students order to make them job creators and positive contributors to socio-economic and political lives of the state and Nigeria at large.  At the Centre, the students are exposed to over 21 skill trainings; and every Wednesday afternoon has been made lecture-free period to enable them learn any vocational skill or trade of their choice.

“Such trainings include bakery and confectionery, beads production, tailoring and fashion designing, drum-making, tie and dye production, weaving and production of “Aso-Oke”, sculptural works, welding, metal and fabrication, bottled and sachet water production etc. The University Farms too have been stocked with various poultry products, fish, pigs, goats and other cash crops to give practical agricultural trainings to the students.”

Odugbemi’s tenure was not without challenges.  Earlier this year, students protested fee increment.  Also a recession meant that the government owed salaries for some months. However, Odugbemi noted that the students had no reason to protest as the fees were not increased from N100,000 (indigenes) and N150,000 (non-indigenes) charged since inception.

As he departs from OSUSTECH, Odugbemi thanked all who worked with him to nurture the institution, and urged the university community to continue the pursuit of its vision.  He also hoped that credible people would be appointed to run the university.

“We appreciate people of goodwill who have visited and commended the giant stride that OSUSTECH has made within the short time of its existence.  To improve the university system, eminent and courageous persons with vast experience in university system should be appointed into key university positions. Such leaders should be focused, fair and firm with proven high level of integrity,” he said.

In his address at their matriculation, Odugbemi said the 299 students should count themselves lucky for being the first to swear their matriculation in the well-equipped campus and also for being chosen among over 1,000 applicants.

He said: “I congratulate the third set of students to be hosted in our newly completed auditorium at the main campus. Second, you have been counted worthy for admission into the university out of over 1,000 prospective students that participated in the University’s last Post Unified Matriculation Examination (PUTME) Computer – Based Screening Test.”

The university, which started academic programme in January, 2011 admitted 98 students as its pioneer set for 2010/2011 session and 124 students as its second set for 2011/2012 session.

Admonishing the new students, the Vice-Chancellor urged them to be of good character and shun all forms of anti-social behaviour such as drug abuse, alcoholism, indecent dressing, examination-malpractices and fraudulent acts, but pursue their studies with all seriousness. He advised them to always be good ambassadors of the school, punctual at lectures and all university events, and abide by the rules and regulations at all times.

He also told them to be security conscious, take precautions against fire disaster, patronise the university’s Guidance, Counselling an Mentoring Unit for their social and emotional needs, avoid loitering, and be respectful to elders, especially their lecturers and other officials.

Odugbemi disclosed that as part of the university’s mission to train its students to become responsible citizens, job creators and good contributors to national development, the university has put in place entrepreneurial programmes which have been designed to provide practical skills and vocational training in over 21 vocations at the university’s Centre for Entrepreneurship and Leadership Training (CELT).

He said the university has designated Wednesday afternoons lecture- free periods to enable students to learn any vocation or sporting activity of their choice.
