Fayemi, Akeredolu, ARG leaders, Awolowo-Dosunmu, others mark Awo’s birthday in Ekiti, Ogun

ADo-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital and Ikenne, Ogun State, came alive yesterday as progressives under the aegis of Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) and the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation celebrated the posthumous birthday of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

Minister of Mines and Steel Development Dr. Kayode Fayemi and Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, led a cast of political stalwarts, who came to celebrate the day with local progressives in Ado-Ekiti.

They told a crowd of audience, who thronged Eagle Hall, Ikere Road, Ajebamidele, that all Yorubas must sustain the ideals of Awolowo, which made the Southwest to stand out as a beacon of development.

Members of ARG, All Progressives Congress (APC) and their admirers had earlier in the day staged a public walk to mark Awolowo’s 109th birthday from Okeyinmi Roundabout to Ajebamidele, venue of the public lecture in a carnival-like fashion.

At Ikenne, eminent Nigerians, including Prof. Banji Akintoye, former Nigerian Ambassador to Netherlands, Dr. Olatokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu, ex-Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko also marked the 31st posthumous birthday of late sage with a call on the nation’s youth to learn from Awo’s leadership example and exemplary lifestyle.

Fayemi used the Ado-Ekiti event to sound a battle cry that the APC was poised to win back Ekiti State in the July 14 governorship election and implement the four cardinal policies of Awolowo, which was in operation when the progressives were in power.

The former Ekiti State governor regretted that the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has obliterated the four cardinal policies, which include free education, free health services for children, pregnant women, aged, job creation and rural growth.

The minister, whose rumoured governorship ambition has been trending for the past few months, said the July 14 election represents a good opportunity to return the APC to power to restore the Awo-inspired legacies for the good of the people

Akeredolu, who was chairman of the occasion, said the APC is the party that still promotes Awo’s legacies, noting that the first Premier of the Western Region was being celebrated for pioneering the development of his race.

Oshun, who was represented by an ARG leader, Mr. Ayo Afolabi, said the body would work hard to ensure that Awo’s legacies remain alive, adding that the Yoruba would continue to celebrate the late political legend.

A guest lecturer at the event, Prof. Alade Fawole, regretted that many of the contemporary political office seekers lack germane ideas to lead because they haven’t groomed themselves by reading and getting exposed to ideas that would make them better leaders.

Fawole, in his lecture titled: “Obafemi Awolowo and transformative politics: Sustaining the worthy legacy,” urged politicians to emulate Awolowo by developing ideas that would change the society for better.

Akintoye, Mimiko, Dr. Awolowo-Dosunmu, at the Ikenne event, urged the youth to be determined, courageous and have vision, if they aspired to effect desirable change in the leadership problems Nigeria has been  contending with for decades.

The programme, titled: “Awo Conversations” at the  Efunyela Hall, was organised by the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation as part of efforts to inculcate in the youths  the enduring legacies of selfless service of the first Premier of the old Western Nigeria.

Akintoye, who chaired the occasion, berated the country’s leaders for being so selfish with no thought for the people’s welfare and growth.

He said selfishness on the part of the leaders at all levels of governance informed the prevalence of hardship and suffering among the youths.

Also, Awolowo-Dosumu, who is the foundation’s Executive Director,  said the programme was organised to enable youths be in a better position as citizens to make informed choices on issues that affect them.

She explained that the youths have been denied inspiration, sense of dignity and belief in capacity for greatness, saying they should be equipped adequately with skills that could assist the country  attain greatness.

For Dr. Olusegun Mimiko,  the youth must be determined, have clear vision born out of knowledge and experience and be ready to make sacrifices to actualise their political ambition.

Other dignitaries at the Ikenne gathering were Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Senator Anthony Adefuye, Prof. Ayo Olukotun, Rev. Kayode Oyediran and his wife, Rev. Tola.

Others included Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Rise Networks Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, , President, Arewa Youth Forum Alhaji Yerima Shettima,   Dr. Jumoke Yacob-Haliso, Dr. Adedara Oduguwa, Senator Femi Okunrounmu and others.

2019: Fresh crisis hits PDP as Jerry Gana, Adeniran, Orubebe, Turaki, others dump party for SDP

Three former ministers are leading an exodus of top members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after efforts to heal the wounds of the last national convention of the party hit the rocks.

Ex-Information Minister Jerry Gana,ex-Education Minister Tunde Adeniran and ex-Niger Delta Minister Godsday Orubebe  are moving to the  Social Democratic Party (SDP) which is merging  with the  Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Peoples Salvation Party (PSP) to form a formidable party ahead of next year’s elections.

More chieftains of the PDP are expected to join them, The Nation gathered yesterday.

The Olusegun Obasanjo-inspired Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) is in  talks with the SDP to work together.

The likes of Gana, Adeniran and Orubebe, all founding members of the PDP, are still displeased with what they see as the hijack of the party by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and others during the party’s last national convention.

Adeniran was defeated in a bitter  chairmanship election by Wike’s candidate, Uche Secondus.

A  high powered committee headed by  Governor Henry Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State to reconcile  the aggrieved members could not help the situation.

The aggrieved party chieftains launched into a  marathon meeting/negotiation with the leadership of SDP on Thursday night in Abuja for a merger.

The meeting ended  early yesterday with the the signing of  a Memorandum of Understanding  by the coalescing group at Ladi Kwali Hall in Sheraton Hotel, Abuja.

Joining Gana from the PDP are a former Military Administrator of Katsina State, Sen. Joseph Akaagerger; a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Peter Godsday Orubebe; Chief Mike Oghiadhome, who was  a former Chief of Staff to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan; ex-Governor Saminu Turaki of Jigawa State; and ex-Minister of Defence, Dr. Olu Agunloye and a former Deputy Speaker of Ondo State House of Assembly, Hon. Dare Emiola.

Also teaming up with SDP are a former member of the House of Representatives, Dr. Junaid Mohammed; Sen. Bassey Ewa Hensaw;  a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Olamide Oni; Supo Shonibare (South-West Zonal chairman of SDP), Hon. Dipo Olaitan (a former leader of the Alliance for Democracy in the House of Representatives); a former Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Kehinde Ayoola;  Amb. Yemi Farounbi; leaders of the Middle Belt Forum; Mr. John Dara; the leaders  of the National Intervention Forum led by Dr. Tafawa Balewa; Amb Bejide; Shehu Gabam who gave the vote of thanks.

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae is a stalwart of the SDP.

Although ex-Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State and a former Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Ibrahim Mantu were part of  the preliminary talks, it was unclear why they were not at the signing of the MoU.

A highly placed source in the group said:”As a matter of fact, Mantu propped up the name of a party which should be included in the merger but it was rejected. He attended the initial meeting but by the time  the MoU was signed, he was not there.

“We are hopeful that he will  be at our subsequent meetings. Some of our leaders are suspecting that Mantu may chicken out  because he has been begging Adeniran and Gana not to leave  PDP.

The MoU entered into by the leaders  was  obtained yesterday by The  Nation.

Jointly signed by Falae (for SDP) and Prof. Gana (for Movement for a New Political Order),  the MoU reads in part: “Whereas on the 12th Day of February 2018, a joint resolution was adopted at Sheraton Hotel Abuja, for working together to ensure the emergence of a new and credible political order to deepen democracy, good governance and genuine development, with peace, security and social justice. The said meeting also  unanimously resolved to build:

a)a restructured, balanced equitable and truly functional Nigerian Federation:

    b)a humane, free, seIf-reliant and democratic society;

    1. c) a dynamic, productive, transformed and sustainable economy;
    2. d) a just, fair, egalitarian and peaceful nation
    3. e) a land of bright and full of opportunities for all Nigerians; and
    4. f) a national culture of raising good leaders through effective mentoring;

“Whereas, it was also agreed that the proposed movement shall be directed,  driven and defined by such core values as:  1. Justice, fairness, equity and progress;  2. Democracy, good leadership, good governance and sustainable development; 3. Transparency, integrity, truth and honour; 4. Accountability and zero tolerance for corruption; 5. Respect for human dignity, human rights and sanctity of human life;; and 6. Peace, security, harmony,  cooperative solidarity, within the rule of law; and 7. International cooperation for a common humanity within a secure and peaceful order.

“Whereas, the movement further resolved to be inspired and motivated by the ideals of social democracy, with great emphasis on:  the triumph of social justice; the  nobility of human dignity; the  harmony of fairness and equality; the power of working together in solidarity; the excellence of good governance, driven by good leadership; the wisdom of reforms and transformation far beyond mere growth; the horror of poverty, demanding eradication; the dignity of prosperity; the imperative of democracy and the security of peace with justice

“Whereas with due reference to these objectives, core values, and ideals, a Strategy Committee was mandated to search for a suitable, popular, meaningful and widespread platform, with a name that already resonates with the people and to make appropriate recommendations; and

“Whereas, the Strategic Committee, comprising representatives from all the six geopolitical zones of the Federation, have met  and submitted their report, unanimously recommending the adoption  of  Social Democratic Party(SDP) vehicle by the movement for a new political order:

“Therefore, we hereby resolutely agree to: (a) Fuse together into one political form; (b) adopt the Social Democratic Party(SDP) as the political vehicle for the fused political formation; (c) Convene a non-elective convention for Saturday, 14th April, 2018; (d) authorize the National Working Committee to serve as the Interim Management Committee until the said convention;  Set up a National Steering Committee of 12 members to guide the Interim Management  Committee during the transition period; Raise a Constitution Review Committee to consider all necessary amendments to the party constitution.”

Speaking with our correspondent last night, Dr. Junaid Mohammed said: “Those involved in SDP are the Peoples Redemption Party(PRP), Peoples Salvation Party(PSP), the Social Democratic Party(SDP) and some elements of Peoples Democratic Party(PDP). It was like a merger but we do not want to call it so because the All Progressives Congress(APC) has destroyed the concept of merger.

“I am an optimist, I believe SDP will make a great impact. The main reason I want to be associated with it is because it is ideologically driven. Even it was not ideologically driven before, it has to be ideologically driven.

Asked if some governors and National Assembly members have subscribed to SDP,  Mohammed added: “It is not compulsory to have governors or members of the National Assembly in a party  to succeed. There are about 65 to 67 parties thereabout in the country. In terms of electoral performance, most of the parties are not on ground. The two parties which have led the country are not doing well. They have impacted negatively on the economy and our political life.  A three-party or a four or five -party system will be better.”

A top source in the SDP said: “The SDP has been approached by the Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) which has been founded by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo. We are hopeful that our ongoing talks will be fruitful.

“We share common ideals with the CNM on how to move the nation forward.”

  • CDS, service chiefs, others review rescue strategies

CDS, service chiefs, others review rescue strategies

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin, Service Chiefs and the Director-General of the Department of States Security (DSS) yesterday reviewed military strategies that would lead to the safe return of the 110 abducted Dapchi schoolgirls to their homes, the Defence Headquarters has announced.

According to the Defence Headquarters, the review meeting was held in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The military chiefs and heads of security agencies, however, solicited the support and cooperation of the media as well as critical stakeholders not to jeopardise their ongoing efforts or put the lives of the girls and others who might be willing to help regarding their rescue at risk.

A statement from the Defence Headquarters last night observed that the strategies of the ongoing military operations against insurgent activities in the country had to be reviewed considering the fact that “military operation strategies have always been in the media space, thereby giving the insurgents and terrorists opportunity to re-strategise”.

The statement, which was signed by the Acting Director of Defence Information, Brig Gen John Agim, reads in part: “The Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin, and the Service Chiefs with the Director General Department of State Service met in Maiduguri on March 1, 2018 to review the ongoing operations in the North East, particularly, the operation to get back the Dapchi girls.

“During the review, the pattern of information management in all the military operations was reviewed.  It was sadly observed that, the military operation strategies have always been in the media space, thereby giving the insurgents and terrorists opportunity to re-strategise.

“It was recommended that hence forth, the military information arms will be communicating the successes rather than strategies.

  • U.S. designates Boko Haram leader Al-Barnawi, others global terrorists

U.S. designates Boko Haram leader Al-Barnawi, others global terrorists

THE United States (U.S.) Department of State has designated three ISIS-affiliated groups – ISIS-West Africa, ISIS-Philippines and ISIS-Bangladesh – as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs) under Section 1(b) of Executive Order (E.O.) 13224 and as Foreign Terrorist Organisations (FTOs) pursuant to Section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

As a result of these designations, U.S. persons are generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with ISIS-West Africa, ISIS-Philippines, or ISIS-Bangladesh.  The groups’ property and interests in property subject to U.S. jurisdiction are blocked.  In addition, it is a crime to knowingly provide, or attempt or conspire to provide, material support or resources to the organisations.

The Department has also designated four other ISIS-affiliated groups and two ISIS-affiliated leaders as SDGTs under Section 1(b) of E.O. 13224.

The groups are ISIS-Somalia, Jund al-Khilafah-Tunisia, ISIS-Egypt, and the Maute Group, and the individuals are Mahad Moalim and Abu Musab al-Barnawi.

The E.O. 13224 imposes strict sanctions on foreign persons determined to have committed, or pose a significant risk of committing, acts of terrorism that threaten the security of U.S. nationals or the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the U.S.

In announcing these designations, Coordinator for Counterterrorism Nathan A. Sales emphasized that “these designations target key ISIS-affiliated groups and leaders outside its fallen caliphate in Iraq and Syria.  Today’s actions are a critical step in degrading ISIS’s global network and denying its affiliates the resources they need to plan and carry out terrorist attacks.”

In March 2015, the leader of the FTO and SDGT group Boko Haram pledged allegiance to ISIS and changed the group’s name to ISIS-West Africa.  ISIS accepted the pledge of allegiance.  In August 2016, ISIS-West Africa split into two factions, due to infighting.  ISIS appointed Abu Musab al-Barnawi as leader of ISIS-West Africa; the other faction, which remained loyal to longtime leader Abubakar Shekau, reverted to the previous Boko Haram name.  Al-Barnawi is the son of Boko Haram founder Mohammed Yusuf.  Prior to his appointment as leader of ISIS-West Africa, al-Barnawi was the spokesperson for Boko Haram.  Under his leadership, ISIS-West Africa has carried out numerous attacks in Nigeria and the Lake Chad region.

•Bafarawa’s poser for EFCC on N600M slush funds case

Former Governor Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa of Sokoto has raised pertinent questions on the integrity of the war on corruption, and it is only fair that relevant agencies of government address them. While some Nigerians are sceptical about the performance of the war on corruption because of its poor deliverables, some are of the opinion that the war is one-sided. But none of the claims has stuck with clarity like that raised by Bafarawa, concerning the alleged discriminatory treatment meted to him over the alleged N600 million 2015 general election slush fund of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to Bafarawa: “in 2015, I alongside five (5) other persons was among other presidential election contact chairmen for the six (6) geo-political zones in the country.” He continued: “the six persons appointed were Sen. Jim Nwobodo (south-east), Dr Peter Odili (south-south), Chief Bode George (south-west), Alhaji Yerima Abdullahi (north-east), Col. Ahmadu Ali (north-central) and myself (north-west).” He went on: “we were given N100million each by a former Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda, and were directed to disburse same to the state elders of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in our zones for campaign expenses.”

In pursuit of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government’s war on corruption, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invited Bafarawa and some of his compatriots to give an account of their receipts and disbursement. Considering that the money in question has all the attributes of election slush fund, the allegation that the money may be proceeds of crime is tenable, and so any effort to recover it is justifiable. Of note, none of the named persons has denied receiving or disbursing the money, as alleged.

But what is strange, according to Bafarawa, is that while all the animals ought to be equal, some appear to be more equal than others. In his words:”What is the rationale to single me out for prosecution while others in the same category with me are left not prosecuted? What is the rationale of EFCC to be prosecuting me without investigating and prosecuting those who are the beneficiaries of the funds?”

We agree that the treatment appears discriminatory, and the sooner all alleged culprits are treated equally, the better for the integrity of the war on corruption. Bafarawa also listed the names, amounts and contact numbers of those who received the money from him, to include: Abdullahi Yelwa for Kebbi, Bashir M. Daihatu for Jigawa, Bala Mohammed Mande for Zamfara, Senator Musa Bello for Kaduna State, Habibu Shuaibu for Kano State, Ambassador Adamu Saidu Daura from Katsina and Engr Mohammadu Tori and Ahmad M. Gusau for Sokoto State.

Bafarawa further raised another similar case, which the EFCC has not given the same treatment as his own. In his words: “You will recall that a chieftain in Ondo State, Chief Olu Falae, also got some certain amount of money but the EFCC has not deemed it fit to prosecute him.” While we sympathise with the EFCC over the unbelievable avalanche of corrupt practices perpetrated by the departed PDP-led Federal Government, a mess they are doing everything humanly possible to clean, we agree with Bafarawa that similar cases should be treated similarly.

Between the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and the EFCC, we urge that necessary steps be taken to reassure citizen Bafarawa that all citizens are equal before the law. To that extent his plea to “the Honourable Attorney-General and Minister of Justice to conduct an investigation into this complaint and make the necessary recommendations so that my family will stop being dragged in the mud and to enable the cause of justice have its proper way,” is tenable.

  • DPR seals 33 filling stations in Ogun for overpricing, others

DPR seals 33 filling stations in Ogun for overpricing, others

The Operations Director of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) at the Ogun Field Office, Mrs Muinat Bello-Zagi, yesterday said the agency has sealed 33 of 444 filling stations in the last seven weeks.

Mrs Bello-Zagi said the affected stations were sealed because the owners allegedly overpriced, under-dispensed and hoarded Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly called petrol.

The DPR director addressed reporters yesterday after the agency met with representatives of major and independent petroleum marketers in the state.

She said two of the stations would be fined and barred from taking supply of PMS at the depot, for some time, for removing the seal on their stations.

According to her, the DPR has continued to carry out surveillance and monitoring across the state.

It said 75 per cent of stations were dispensing petrol to motorists.

She said: “In Ogun State, the DPR has been on surveillance and monitoring of filling stations across the state.

“We have been to Ogun-Waterside, Mowe-Ibafo, Ipokia, Ado Odo-Ota, Abeokuta metropolis, Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, among others.

“Between January and February 22, we visited 444 filling stations across the state and we discovered that 245 stations out of this number were dispensing the PMS to motorists.

“This shows that about 75 per cent of the filling stations were dispensing products to motorists.

“However, also out of this number, 33 filling stations were sealed for either over-pricing, under-dispensing and hoarding. Two of them are located on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. These two filling stations were sealed but their owners removed our seal without recourse to us.

“We have asked the depots not to supply them products. They will definitely pay fines for removing our seal,”

Mrs Bello-Zagi also said the DPR had begun online monitoring of petroleum retail outlets in the state.

She urged major and independent marketers not to hoard petroleum products while she warned the public against panic buying.
