    Cross River APC endorses Tinubu, Otu for second term

    The Cross River State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held an expanded caucus meeting on Tuesday evening at Hogis Royale Hotel in Calabar, gathering top party leaders to deliberate on the state’s political direction and achievements in governance.

    Present at the meeting were notable figures such as former Governor Clement Ebri, Dame Florence Ita-Giwa, Senators Eteng Jonah Williams and Asuquo Ekpenyong, Speaker of the State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba, Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment Senator John Owan Enoh, Prof. Eyo Etim Nyong, and Ada Bekwarra Omang Idiege.

    The party stalwarts took turns to commend Governor Bassey Edet Otu for what they described as his outstanding achievements in under two years, especially in infrastructure, security, education, healthcare, aviation, and agriculture.

    In a unanimous resolution, the caucus passed a vote of confidence and endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Bassey Otu, and Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Peter Odey for a second term in office come 2027. President Tinubu was praised for his decisive leadership and sweeping economic reforms, while Governor Otu’s “People First” governance style received even greater acclaim.

    Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong moved the motion for Otu’s second-term endorsement, seconded by Hon. John Ulafor. Similarly, Hon. Victor Abang moved the motion backing President Tinubu’s re-election, seconded by Speaker Elvert Ayambem.

    The meeting concluded with a communiqué issued under the chairmanship of the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Stephen Odey. The drafting committee included Dr. Odey, APC State Publicity Secretary Hon. Emmanuel Edem Inyang, former Commissioner for Climate Change Dr. Alice Ekwu, Commissioner for Establishment Hon. Lawrencia Ita, and Rt. Hon. Hilary Bisong of Boki II.

    Among the key resolutions was the formation of a high-powered delegation led by Governor Otu and his deputy to engage President Tinubu in Abuja over concerns of marginalization in federal appointments and infrastructure projects.

    Stakeholders also expressed deep appreciation to the President for initiating key projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Special Agro-Processing Zone, describing them as game-changers under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

    Governor Otu received accolades for his consistent efforts to improve security across the state, with a call from stakeholders to maintain the current effective security framework.

    The caucus also stressed the importance of regular consultations between government and stakeholders to foster inclusive development and ensure sustained party unity. 

    They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening internal cohesion and securing APC’s political dominance in Cross River.

    In his response, Governor Otu thanked party leaders for their unwavering support and reiterated his commitment to delivering on his campaign promises.

    “My focus is to fulfill the mandate freely given to me by Cross Riverians. I urge everyone to join me in building a better state instead of engaging in divisive politics,” he said.

    He added, “By 2031, I will leave Cross River State significantly better than I met it—economically stronger, more secure, and full of opportunities for all.”

    APC grants Otu automatic 2027 ticket

     The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River on Monday granted Gov. Bassey Otu and his deputy, Mr Peter Odey, an automatic ticket for the 2027 General Election.

    Speaking at the APC Secretariat in Calabar, the party’s Chairman, Mr Alphonsus Eba, urged other party members aspiring for political positions to begin their consultations.

    Eba clarified that apart from the governor and his deputy, no other individual had been given an automatic ticket by the party.

    He encouraged other aspirants to return to their constituents and seek their support ahead of the elections.

    “The State Working Committee and the State Executive Committee of APC met today and resolved that Governor Otu will be the party’s sole candidate in 2027,” he said.

    He explained that the decision was based on the principle of continuity, stating, “Nobody changes a winning team. The governor and his deputy will fly the party’s flag in 2027.”

    He added that even if Otu was reluctant to run, the party would still present only one ticket with his name, as was done in 2022.

    “We appeal to him to listen to the desires of party members and accept the nomination,” Eba stated.

    He also praised the deputy governor, currently acting as governor, for supporting President Bola Tinubu’s actions in Rivers.

    Eba noted that some individuals had misrepresented the state’s position. He commended the acting governor for clarifying that South-South governors had not consulted him before opposing Tinubu’s decision.

    Otu joins Enenche in prayer session for Cross River

    Cross River Governor Bassey Otu was part of a crowd at the UNICAL Int’l conference Centre for a special prayer session for the State. 

    The session took place during the Calabar Crusade 2025 miracle organised by Dr Paul Enenche of The Dunamis Commission. 

    The crusade recorded various miracles, signs and wonders with the social media agog with comments. 

    @SamsonUgoChuks said: “Pastor Paul Enenche crusades have been trending online lately, at least bloggers are now seeing good about the church, I hear say they don’t collect offerings or tithes in these crusades..? True?”

    No nation will go far without justice, says Otu

    Gov. Bassey Otu of Cross River has urged legal practitioners in Nigeria to uphold justice, saying no nation will go far without justice.

    Otu said this in Abuja at the launch of Johnny Agim, SAN Foundation (JASAN Foundation), a Non- Governmental Organisation (NGO), by the Lead Counsel of Legal Assent, Abuja, Johnny Agim, SAN, on Friday night.

    The Foundation will help to address the challenges facing young lawyers, legal education, the legal profession and the administration of justice sector.

    It is anchored on three pillars, namely: mentorship, indigent lawyers` sponsorship and legal service reforms; and public interest advocacy.

    Otu also said there was the need for legal practitioners to be properly trained and mentored for justice to be served.

    “When we don’t have those in the legal profession trained properly and mentored properly, then justice can be misled. But where there is justice, you will see happiness.

    “Where there is justice, you will see peace. That is why in this profession (law), even in terms of definition of personality and protocol, it is very different,’’ he said.

    While commending the president of JASAN Foundation for his noble, Otu urged Nigerians to support the project.

    Otu said what was basically lacking in Nigeria in all profession was mentorship.

    “It is not only in the law profession that we have this huge gap analysis existing, which has caused our nation so much that our attraction has been disrupted.

    “It is very clear that our country, Nigeria, any nation that hasn’t got a proper path of imparting knowledge and experience, then such an entity cannot go too far.

    “I also hope there is going to be emulation from other professionals in other sectors to mentor their mentees to be able to provide the best services for our nation,’’ he said.

    Otu, others seek collective action against humanitarian challenges in C/River

    Cross River State Governor, Prince Bassey Edet Otu, and other stakeholders in the humanitarian sector, have called for collective efforts to address humanitarian challenges in Cross River, Nigeria and the world at large.

    Otu spoke during the 2024 World Humanitarian Day Public Symposium organised by the Cross River State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in Calabar, the state capital.

    According to the governor, the theme for this year’s World Humanitarian Day, “Act For Humanity,” is a clarion call for action in the face of escalating violence against humanitarian workers. He stated that the Day was a poignant reminder of the need for collective action towards addressing humanitarian issues which have become more pressing now than ever.

    The governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Establishment, Mrs Lawrencia Ita, emphasised that collective action is needed in “Supporting all humanitarian workers, addressing the root causes of crises as well as fostering inclusive, equitable partnerships, embracing innovative solutions and technologies. Advocating for policies and practices that prioritise humanity,” among others.

    In her remarks, the wife of the governor, Rev. (Mrs) Eyoanwan Otu, urged Crossriverians to be their brother’s keeper by extending a helping hand to one another.

    Represented by her Special Adviser on Programmes and Events, Apostle Queen Eton, the governor wife emphasised the importance of compassion, empathy and kindness, which according to her, are essential ingredients for humanitarian works in a contemporary world defined by conflict, injustice and suffering.

    Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has said his administration is driving an economic renaissance to achieve success in agro-industrialisation, infrastructure, education, others.

    The governor said his administration was modelled after the style of the of the late premier of defunct Eastern Region, Dr. Michael Okpara.

    He spoke at the annual lecture and award ceremony in Abuja yesterday in honour of the late premier.

    Otu was honoured with “the Premier’s Prize 2024 – Leadership Award, Golden Plaque category” Michael Okpara Foundation.

    He noted that  Okpara left a lasting legacy in good governance, development, and integrity in public service, “pioneering the fastest growing regional economy in the world and set high standards for leadership excellence.’’

    “My administration in Cross River State aims to emulate and build on Okpara’s principles by focusing on agriculture, education, and infrastructure.

    “The state is implementing agricultural initiatives as soil fertility surveys, oil palm seedling distributions, commercial agricultural funding schemes, and infrastructure projects to boost productivity, create jobs, and ensure food security.

    “We prioritise good governance by promoting transparency, participation, accountability, and efficiency in public affairs. It fosters a responsive and inclusive government in collaboration with people to drive change and development.”

    Otu also said his government is empowering women farmers and improving agricultural to enhance food production and economic growth.

    Chairman of the Mfoundation, Chief Uzodinma Okpara, singled out Otu due to developments in Cross River state.

    He lauded Out for the soil mapping initiative that allows anyone in agriculture to understand fertility of the soil type before planting.

    Okpara urged governments to build and develop farm settlements to address food security and agric development.

    Democracy Day: Why we are grateful in Cross River, by Governor Otu

    Governor Bassey Otu has expressed that twenty-five years of uninterrupted democracy have provided valuable lessons and blessings for Cross River.

    During an interdenominational Christian service at the Apostolic Church on Edgerly Road in Calabar, Governor Otu, represented by his deputy, Peter Odey, expressed gratitude for the patriotic leaders who have guided Cross River state and Nigeria.

    He emphasised the importance of allowing democracy to flourish, as it leads to development and ensures that the voices of the people are always heard.

    Governor Otu highlighted the significance of the June 12, 1993, presidential election and its subsequent annulment in fueling Nigeria’s democratic struggle.

    He paid tribute to heroes like Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M.K.O.) Abiola for their contributions to democracy in Nigeria.

    The governor reassured the people of Cross River that his administration prioritises the welfare of its citizens and is committed to addressing issues such as the backlog of unpaid gratuity for retirees.

    In a sermon titled: “Cross River shall prosper again”, Pastor Ekpe Offiong stated that prosperity will come to the state if its leaders act justly and truthfully before God.

    The clergyman commended the ‘People First’ approach of the Otu-led administration, which focuses on meeting the needs and aspirations of the masses, and encouraged the governor to maintain this commitment to delivering democratic dividends to the people.

    Government officials, elder statesmen, political figures, traditional leaders, security agency heads, and other dignitaries attended the event, where readings from the Bible were shared by Deputy Governor, Peter Odey and the speaker of the State House of Assembly, Elvert Ayambem.

    Governor Otu splashes millions on Super Eagles forward Moffi in Calabar

    Super Eagles forward, Terem Moffi, has been honoured by Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu for his significant contributions to the nation, the senior men’s national team (Super Eagles), and the state.

    The governor praised Moffi’s achievements while addressing media practitioners in Calabar on Thursday night, during an all-media interface marking the end of events celebrating his one year in office.

    Governor Otu announced a gift of N10 million to the Super Eagles star and invited him for a private visit to his office in Calabar to celebrate his contributions and his recent birthday on May 25, 2024.

    The governor said: “Terem Moffi, We are very proud of you. We’re proud of this family and just like I always say, there are so many other young Crossriverians who can play football in a global space, all they need is the opportunity. I welcome you.”

    Earlier, Moffi had expressed happiness in meeting the governor.

    The Super Eagles star also visited the state ministry of sports development and made some donations to the Rovers of Calabar Football Club and the Pelican Stars Football Club in Calabar, Cross River State Sports Development Commissioner, Agnes Atsu said.

    Moffi’s meeting with the governor of his home state appears to be the first, since the last African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast in which Nigeria finished second.

    In his avowed commitment to football development, Governor Bassey Otu has made a 100 percent increment of subvention to the State-owned soccer team, Rovers Football Club of Calabar.

    The Governor, who thanked the management and players of Rovers Football Club for holding the forte for the team with a rich history in the anals of Nigerian football, amid underfunding, noted that the increase from five million to 10 million as subvention for Rovers Football Club underscores his determination to reposition football and sports in general in the state.

    “Let me thank and congratulate you for what you have been doing over the years. Rovers are a club with very rich history. This government is poised to promoting sports as a business,” he remarked, while receiving the team’s players in the governor’s office premises.

    On the players’ health and wellness, Otu directed that immediate medical attention be given to injured footballers. He also promised to provide the team with a brand new bus in 2025, as well as look into other teething challenges bothering the football club.

    The state’s number one citizen also commended the Rovers Football Club 18 year old goalkeeper, Clinton Andy, who was on international duties with Nigeria’s under 20 national team, for flying Cross River colours and making the state proud.

    He prayed for more open doors for the players as they pursue their football dreams, with a charge to staff and player of Rovers Football Club to double their efforts in the hope of returning the Club to its pride of place as a major force in Nigerian football.

    In her remarks, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Mrs Agnes Atsu, the players’ visit to the governor became necessary to present some challenges bedeviling Rovers Football Club, which is five games away from concluding the Nigerian National Football League.

    Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has presented his government’s reform strategies, actions and economic indices to diplomats, policy makers and investment drivers to attract and create more growth opportunities.

    The venue was Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, during an “Executive Governor’s Roundtable” summit: “Building Cooperation for a Better Today and a Resilient Future.”

    Present were Canadian High Commissioner, James Christoff; Belgian Ambassador, Peter Leenknegt; French Deputy Head of Mission, Jean-Francois Hasperue; Indian High Commissioner, G. Balasubramanian; Israeli Ambassador, Michael Freeman; Norwegian’s Minister Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission, Kristin Waeringsaase; development partners’ representatives as well as government functionaries.

    He said the event was the first  engagement to build strong ties with the diplomatic community and partners for a beneficial relationship.

    Otu said the state has opportunities for cooperation in infrastructure; health care; education; social development and humanitarian services; agribusiness; commerce and industry; manufacturing; solid minerals; oil and gas; tourism; and hospitality.

    “We have keyed into Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aligning it with our People’s First Agenda.

    “We are negotiating with the Federal Government to take over the over 600 megawatts power plant at Ikot Nyong in Odukpani Local Government, capitalising on the Electricity Law to establish our energy efficiency for development.

    “Besides, there is a state-owned 33-megawatts power plant, and in six months, the state will draw gas pipeline supply to the plant,” he said.

    “We are committed to agriculture. We have completed soil mapping of the state. So, investors can operate with informed data on soil type and arability for cultivation.”
