  • CAN VP, Otubu, dedicates first house at 72

    •After donating many C&S churches

Vice President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Elder Professor Joseph Otubu, finally has a house of his own.

He dedicated the four-bedroom duplex tucked in a private estate in Kukwaba, Abuja, years after living in rented apartments despite solely funding the building of not less than four ultra-modern Cherubim and Seraphim(C&S) churches across the nation.

The 72-year-old foremost gynecologist said it took him that long to get a house of his own because of his strong aversion for corruption.

“In 47 years of medical practice, I have never taken a kobo that belongs to someone else.

“I have access to many important personalities within and outside the country because of my professional exposure but I have refused to abuse my office and position. I have lived only on my salaries and incomes from investment,” he stated at a thanksgiving service.

The service, which held at Eternal Glory Cathedral, one of the ultra-modern churches Otubu personally built, attracted friends, relations and well-wishers.

They expressed delight the man they simply referred to as Prof now has a house in his name.

Addressing the crowd of church members, former medical students, CAN officials and relations at the service, Otubu urged them to hunt down corruption where they are.

“You can be honest in this country and still get what you want. They will fight you but you will always prevail. I have practised medicine for 47 years without taking bribe for once.”

He said until four months ago, his heart was always skipping whenever September was approaching for payment of rent.

Otubu recalled how he handed over all the equipment acquired for him by His father, Baba Aladura Godfrey Otubu, to the medical school of University of Jos, for ten years for free, saying his professional life has been marked by selflessness.

On the perception that he is a trouble maker, Otubu attributed it to his constant fights against corruption in professional and religious circles.

“I can never change. Until I go to my grave, I will always fight corruption. Even if corruption is in my house, I will fight it,” he stressed.

Ministering at the service, General Secretary of CAN, Rev Dr Musa Asake, thanked God for the manifold blessings upon Otubu.

He urged Christians to always thank God regardless of whatever they were passing through because His goodness cannot be repaid.

Regaling the worshippers with what many will consider unpalatable in his life and others, Asake said in everything the goodness of God remains incontrovertible.

Facing Otubu, he told them point-blank he won’t have too many friends because “you are tough and detailed.”

He said the many battles he has fought clearly showed he would have been consumed were it not for God.

“You have gotten to a stage where you have the licence to practise for life. It’s simply God’s grace. If it were down to men, you wouldn’t be here.”

  • Despite recession, Nigerians must praise God, says Otubu

Vice president of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Prof (Elder) Joseph Otubu has assured the nation will emerge stronger from the ongoing economic recession.

He said Nigerians should develop an attitude of gratitude and keep faith alive in God to survive the hard times.

Otubu spoke last Saturday during the Choir fiesta of Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide (MCCSW) at its international headquarters in Lekki, Lagos.

Otubu, who delivered a sermon titled God of perfection, said  Nigerians must learn how to praise God despite the recession.

He said the economic downturn is only a temporary phase that will soon give way to a new dawn of prosperity.

The retired gynecologist however warned only those who dare to see the big pictures and praise God when times are hard will enjoy the coming prosperity.

According to him: “We may think we don’t have anything to be grateful for because of the economic hard times.

“The truth is we have everything to be grateful for. God has kept us despite the recession. Several nations of the world have been swallowed by the economic tide but Nigeria is still standing.

“Regardless of what the times say, we must be grateful. We must thank God in all circumstances.

“We must give Him the praise because that is the only essence of our living.”

He assured that the terrorism, insecurity and various challenges facing the nation will become past times when God steps in.

“God is the God of perfection. He will fix this nation. He will deliver Nigeria.

“But we have to be grateful to Him while He is at it to prove that we trust Him completely,” Otubu stressed.

The Baba Aladura and Prelate of MCCSW, His Eminence Dr (Elder) Israel Akinadewo, said the church has made serious giant strides for which it must be grateful.

He pointed out it has registered its presence in Canada and America as well as started a mega project in Ondo State aside from the two additional parishes recently commissioned in Surulere, Lagos and Abuja.

Akinadewo pointed the emergence of Otubu as CAN vice president is also a great feat, the first in the over 100- year history of Aladura churches in the nation.

The fiesta featured soul-lifting ministrations from the Mass choir of the church as well as invited choristers from Pentecostal and Aladura circles.

Guests and worshippers were in ecstatic mood as the choristers ushered them to the throne of grace in melodious worship songs.

  • Otubu: Why I can’t stop building churches

Otubu: Why I can’t stop building churches

On Monday, April 11, the General Evangelist of Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide (MCCSW), Elder Professor Joseph Otubu, decided to build yet another church for the Lord.

Exactly 53 days after, a sparkling 500-seater ultra-modern church christened Eternal Glory Parish was commissioned in Kukwaba District, Abuja to coincide with his 70th birthday.

The renowned gynecologist told guests at the dedication that building churches has become an addiction he cannot help.

“I don’t know what is wrong with me but I can’t just stop building for God,” he started to a loud applause.

“I guess it is an addiction that will never go away. No matter where I am or what I do, I don’t find satisfaction until I have done something for God.”

He said no price was too high to pay to make God happy, saying his passion remained to continue building across all the major cities of the nation.

Otubu, who donated a parish in Surulere, Lagos last November to the church, said: “It is a token to remind God that I am grateful for His faithfulness over the years.”

The Organisation of African Instituted Churches (OAIC) candidate for the presidential election of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said it was a habit he inherited from his father, the late Baba Aladura of Eternal Sacred Order of Cherubim and Seraphim Church (ESOCSC), Godfrey Otubu.

He recalled how his father built many churches for ESOCSC across the nation and paid the tuition of uncountable indigent students.

“I learnt well from him and the next place I will like to build for God is the city of Onitsha,” he stated.

Showing his nuclear family, Otubu dispelled rumour that he is a polygamous stating he has been married only to one wife, Josephine since February 4, 1979 with two sons.

“I don’t have a concubine or another wife anywhere else. This is the only woman I have known all my life,” he stressed.

Declaring he has decided to live his rest for God and humanity, Otubu said: “I have told my children I have nothing to leave for them when I am gone.

“All they can hope to get from me are just books in the library.”

His friend of many years and former Director Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NACA), Dr Harold Demuren, praised Otubu for being selfless.

He revealed that plans had been concluded for the celebrator and his immediate family to be in Jerusalem for an all-expense paid vacation.

“We had done everything until Joseph (Otubu) said he will prefer to celebrate his 70th with a church dedication back home.

“I found that humbling and touching,” he stated to wide applause.

The Baba Aladura of MCCSW, Dr Israel Akinadewo, praised Otubu for his selflessness.

He disclosed that despite all the cathedrals he has built for God, the celebrator does not have a house of his own.

  • Otubu donates model parish to Motailatu church

The first model parish of Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide (MCCSW) has been commissioned in Surulere Lagos.

It was donated by the General Evangelist of the church, His Eminence Elder (Professor) Joseph Otubu.

Otubu told reporters that the building was the first of its kind in the history of the 51-year-old church.

According to him, the concept of a model parish is long-overdue in the church, stating that it is necessary for the church to measure up to modern realities.

The renowned Gyneacologist said: “People keep seeing the C&S movement as an old church. We need to be able to change that perception in how we do things to stay relevant.”

He hinted that similar ultra-modern fully-air-conditioned auditoriums are in the pipelines in Abuja, Port-Harcourt and Northern parts of the country.

Ministering at the dedication service, the Baba Aladura, His Most Eminence Elder Dr Israel Akinadewo, named the branch Saint Mene Otubu Parish.

Speaking on the theme Upon this rock I will build my church, Akinadewo urged Christians to learn to stay in their areas of calling.

He preached against unhealthy rivalry in the body, stating that every minister must accept his assignment with gratitude.

According to him: “It is when one is trying to enforce what God has not approved that man begins to have envy, jealousy, strife and the rest.

“The greatness of man is most pronounced and appreciated if he accepts his fate, accepts that which he rightfully has, be creative in it and not look at what is meant for others.”

He ended by charging Christians not to seek self-glory but surround themselves with godly men and avoid inordinate ambition.

The Lagos State Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Apostle Alexander Bamgbola, who was honoured with a meritorious award by the church, described himself as a product of the Cherubim and Seraphim church.

He recalled how an old prophet pronounced he would be great in life years back in a village close to Ilorin, Kwara State, stating that the church has done so much for the nation for which the body of Christ must be grateful.

Bamgbola urged the leadership to remain focused and continue to offer greater service of love to God and humanity.

  • Appoint incorruptible ministers, says Otubu

    Appoint incorruptible ministers, says Otubu

The  General Evangelist of Motailatu Church Cherubim & Seraphim Worldwide (MCCSW), Elder Prof. Joseph Otubu, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint only incorruptible men and women in his soon-to-be constituted cabinet.

He said only the appointment of person above corruption will add impetus to the ongoing anti-graft war.

Otubu, a renowned gynecologist, said: “The president has promised his ministers will be above board. He has to stick to that regardless of the pressure from any quarters.

“The task of changing Nigeria begins from having incorruptible ministers; men and women above pecuniary financial gains.

“I will appeal to him to do us the honour of appointing only such men into his cabinet.”

He tasked Nigerians to support the anti-graft war by refusing to accept handouts from corrupt public officials.

Otubu also frowned against the culture of mounting pressure on government officials for financial inducement, saying such development exposes the officials to graft.

“If you know someone in government, don’t see him or her as a messiah.

“If we keep asking them to bail us out, we are indirectly asking them to steal public funds for us,” Otubu argued.

  • Otubu preaches patience with Buhari, others

Otubu preaches patience with Buhari, others

The General Evangelist of Motailatu Church Cherubim & Seraphim Worldwide (MCCSW), Elder Prof. Joseph Otubu, has urged Nigerians to be patient with the new administration.

He said the expectation of change from the masses was valid and understandable but said the new government will require time to change the nation.

Otubu, who spoke with newsmen, said: “Nigerians are right to demand for change because that is what this new government promised.

“It is in order to become anxious and apprehensive with government but we must give this new administration a little time.

“No nation is changed or turned over in an instant. It requires a lot of strenuous works and reengineering to salvage a complex nation like Nigeria.”

The patience required, the renowned gynecologist stated, cannot be as much as the one Nigerians have exercised over the years.

He assured that the administration will start delivering once it settles down and is assisted by prayers.

“Since we have a government more Nigerians wanted, all we can do now is to embrace eternal vigilance and pray for its success.

“More than anything, this new government needs prayers. It also needs a little patience because I have no doubt God will turn things around.

“It won’t be long again that Nigeria will take her place in the comity of nations and become the beautiful bride again.

“I urge for patience because we are in for a wonderful time where God will restore our pride and make the whole world come looking for us again.”

Real, lasting change, he explained, will require “patience because we have waited for this long and God will show up this time around for Nigeria.”

  • Otubu: Nigerians should support incoming administration

the General Evangelist of Motailatu Cherubim and Seraphim Church Worldwide (MCSCW), Prof. Elder Joseph Otubu, has appealed to Nigerians to be prepared to pay sacrifices that will make the coming change a reality.

Change, he said, doesn’t just happen in any society without collective resolve and support.

He challenged Nigerians to offer the incoming administration maximum support to enable it bring about the much-awaited change.

Otubu, in a statement, said: “Now that Nigerians have made their choice and chosen to be identified with the change mantra, the onus is on us to support the incoming administration.

“We have to be ready to support tough decisions and policies that the administration will seek to implement.”

Otubu, a renowned Professor of Gyneacology, added that the incoming administration will only make impact when Nigerians show tremendous belief and trust.

He tasked Nigerians to be patient with the Buhari-led administration for its policies to bear fruits.

“Nothing happens in a vacuum and for nothing. So, if we want to see real changes, we have to be ready to wait and allow the policies gestate without obstruction.”

While saying constructive criticism will not be out of place, Otubu however warned that excessive harassment of government officials and policies will not take the nation to the Promised Land.

  • Otubu: Professor of Gynecologist with a heart for God

It’s all too easy to miss him in a crowd. But for keen observation, one will just pass him by without a second look. But Elder Professor Joseph Otubu is no small fry. He stands tall in the world of Obstetrics and Gynecology with subspecialty certification in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

Yet, at a recent church meeting, the only thing that stood him out was his flowing Aladura garment. TheGeneral Evangelist of Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide (MCCSW) stood humbly at a corner with a grin. Thoroughly immersed in the fraternal greetings exchanged by friends and associates, Otubu watched on in amazement.

There were no airs around him; he was accessible and approachable to all. But he shouldn’t be going by his exploits in the religious and medical circles. The retired Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology is currently Executive Director of the Center for Reproductive Health Research (CRHR), Abuja.

Otubu received extensive training in the Subspecialty of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He was first Nigerian who did the subspecialty training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (1979 to 1981) at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas.

He has served as external examiner to several medical schools in Nigeria and Ghana and NIPPS, Kuru. He is a recipient of several research grants and has over 100 scientific publications to his credit.

But he said he considers all these nothing. “I am what I am by God’s grace. I am God-made so I cannot brag or look down on anybody,” he stated. Despite his huge medical achievements, he does not toy with his rich spiritual heritage.

Despite being the second son of the Late Baba Aladura Dr. G.I.M Otubu, who is the national and international symbol of Aladura churches, he still found time to obtain a diploma in theology from the famous Emmanuel College of Theology at the University of Ibadan.

He has served in different capacities in Organisation of African Instituted Churches (OAIC), Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Nigerian Interreligious Council (NIREC).

Elder Otubu has written several handbooks and conference papers on Aladura churches and has special interest in organising training courses in Aladura churches.

“God is my strength,” he replied when asked how he has achieved so much. “All I want to do is to do the best I can to advance His kingdom on earth. I love Him with all my heart and He is what counts to me.” Medicine might be his first love but God has his eternal love.
