Only progressive govt can liberate Ekiti – Group

A socio-political pressure group, Ekiti Awake, has called on the people of Ekiti State to elect a progressives government to power in the 2018 governorship election.

It called on Ekiti people to “wake up from their slumber and retrace their steps back to the progressives where good governance, rule of law, integrity, truth, justice and delivery of dividends of democracy are accorded priority.”

Ekiti Awake in a statement on Monday by its Coordinator, Bamikole Ayekooto, expressed displeasure with the hardship being faced by the people of the state “whose standard of living has plummeted in the last three years.”

The body regretted the suffering of civil servants owed arrears of salaries and pensioners owed monthly allowances, massive unemployment, unfavourable business environment, harsh tax policies, alleged misplacement of priorities and diversion of bailout funds.

Ekiti Awake explained that the major achievements which had positive impact on the lives of the people of the state were executed during the progressive administrations led by Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo and Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

The statement said: “The hardship being faced by the people of Ekiti State is a wake-up call to reject the conservatives and vote in the progressives in the 2018 governorship election.

“Considering the achievements recorded in the state during the tenures of former Governors Niyi Adebayo and Kayode Fayemi, our state could not afford to do otherwise than to go back to the progressives in the next political dispensation.

“Nothing is working as far as Ekiti is concerned; our people including school pupils are reeling under tax burden while businesses are closing down and investors are fleeing in droves because of the harsh economic climate under the Fayose government.”

‘No parallel APC interim committee in Ondo’

Leaders of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in Ondo State have said that there is no parallel Interim Executive Committee within the All Progressives Congress(APC)in the state.

They described the inauguration of the Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu- led Interim Executive Committee of the APC as a welcome development.

According to them, there is no other committee in the state but the one launched penultimate week in Akure by the APC National Vice Chairman in the Southwest, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo.

They maintained that the committee was the only one saddled with the responsibility of putting the progressive party on the fast lane of development in Ondo.

At a press briefing in Akure yesterday, the former CPC executives said those claiming to be members of the parallel committee were agents of some individuals in the corridors of power.

In attendance at the briefing were the former CPC Vice Chairmen in the Central, North and South districts, Dr Wole Awoniyi, Chief Samuel Olaiya and Hon.Jimi Lumowo respectively as well as the Legal Adviser, Bosun Otitoju, among others.

Also, factional members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the coastal area of Ilaje/Ese-Odo federal constituency have closed ranks ahead of the forthcoming bye-election into the vacant seat in the constituency.

The reconciliation meeting presided over by Dr. Tai Malumi also witnessed mass defection of Labour Party members in Ilaje local government to the party.

At the meeting were groups such as Ilaje Democratic Forum (IDF) and Legacy Group (LG),which comprised leaders of defunct ACN, CPC and ANPP in the area

Malumi described the forth coming House of Representative bye-election in Ilaje/Ese-odo federal constituency as a testing ground for PDP, LP and APC.

He was optimistic that APC candidate would perform well at the poll.

For the party to succeed, he said all hands must be on decks, stressing that factionalisation would not augur well with the party.

The APC chieftain said all the groups and factions possess qualities and political clouts needed for any party to excel but emphasise they must come together and work like a team.

    ‘No faction in Ondo APC’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State has said there is no parallel executive committee in the party.

It debunked the media report that some members met in Ijare, Ifedore Local Government, and formed a parallel executive committee.

In a statement yesterday, the party’s Interim Publicity Secretary, Rotimi Fashakin, said: “These unconscionable folks had the temerity to falsely lay claim to deriving their authority from one of our national leaders. We hereby state that the newspaper report was a mendacious piece of hogwash!

“The APC in Ondo State is one and indivisible. The purported parallel executive committee only exists in the imagination of these individuals, who have wittingly lent themselves as willing tools in the hands of the Labour Party (LP)/Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) fusion for the purpose of scuttling the birth of liberty for the people, which the APC’s advent connotes.

“As we stated in our earlier statement last Thursday, the authentic and only APC executive committee in Ondo is the one led by Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), which was put in place with the full insignia of the authority of the national body by the Interim National Vice-Chairman (Southwest), Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo.”

    Ekiti APC gets interim executive

The Interim National Vice-Chairman (Southwest) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo, inaugurated yesterday the Ekiti State APC Interim Executive Committee.

The ceremony was held in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

The five-man committee is chaired by Chief Olajide Awe.

Other members are Mr. Abiodun Ogunleye (Secretary); Alhaji Azeez Awolokun (Treasurer); Mrs. Nike Olaosebikan (Public Relations Officer) and Chief Dele Falusi (Organising Secretary).

The committee will be in office pending the holding of congresses at the ward, local government and state levels, where substantive executives would be elected.

Governor Kayode Fayemi described the constitution of the committee as “another critical point in the making of a party formed to rescue Nigerians from a journey without maps and a directionless movement”.

Fayemi said the committee will guide the Registration Committee, which would be sent from the National Secretariat to oversee the registration of members in the next two weeks.

He said the registration of members was important to strengthen the party and prepare for the governorship poll.

Fayemi said: “This is critical because the governorship election will hold in June and the earlier this exercise is completed the better for us. We want it wrapped up before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) blows the whistle in March, which is about 90 days before the election.

“We are happy that Ekiti State is the first place where the interim executive has been put in place and this EXCO will take charge of the party, pending the holding of congresses at the ward, local government and state levels before the national congress.”

He expressed satisfaction that the party has successfully integrated members of the three legacy parties that merged into APC.

Fayemi urged members to work harder to improve the party, adding that

APC has created unit level in its constitution to give the party grassroots appeal.

Adebayo described the role of the committee as advisory, urging it to assist the registration panel that will be coming from the party’s national secretariat to succeed in its assignment.
