SDP rejects Ondo election results, heads to tribunal

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its governorship candidate in last Saturday’s governorship in Ondo state, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, have rejected the results of the election.

It said the election was a slap on democracy.

The state chairman of the SDP, Barr. Gbenga Akinbuli, who spoke at a press briefing in Akure, called for immediate cancellation of the election.

Barr. Akinbuli said voters were intimidated and harassed at Ward 10 Unit 19, Ondo West local government.

He said voters were offered between N7000 and N10000 at the polling unit where he voted.

Akinbuli said agents of the SDP were chased away from many polling units across the state.

He said it was laughable for the party’s candidate to score two votes in Okitipupa where he hails from.

He said: “How come the SDP got zero votes in Ilaje? The thugs chased everybody out of the polling unit. People were scared of coming out to cast their votes.

“Security at the polling units could not do anything. They chased out our agents from the polling unit. We are saying the election was marred by gross malpractices, vote buying, and electoral intimidation.

“We are going to court. We are asking for the cancellation of the election. It was a show of shame. It was buyers and sellers day in Ondo.”

Akingboye said he would ask the court to declare him the winner of the election.

He said he was shocked at what happened during the conduct of the election.

“What I saw yesterday was shocking to me. If you look at what the TVC played out on the news yesterday, even an APC chieftain was about beating me up, but I just have to play maturity. It was a sad story.

“In my unit in Okitipupa, ward 2 unit 10, they were doing an open auction. I told them that as a credible person, someone who has integrity, I would never partake in unlawful acts in Nigeria.

“I’m asking that they should declare me the winner of this election because people were supposed to vote for me, but they chased all our party agents out of the polling unit and thuggery was the act of the day. I’m considering myself as the winner of this election and INEC should declare me the winner of this election.”

He stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) understood the volatile nature of Ondo State as regards election.

According to him, “There is nothing to fesr about my running mate. My followers understand that. We are going into the election to win.

“Forget about what the APC and PDP people are saying. Ondo people want a change. They want to vote for change. Nobody can rig election in Ondo. INEC know Ondo is volatile. It happened in 1983. They better be a good umpire and let the people’s votes count.”

Governorship candidate of Social Democratic Party (SDP), Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, has said the resignation of Mrs. Susan Gbemisola Alabi, as his running mate, would not affect his chances at the polls.

He said the resignation would further boost his chances of emerging winner of the November 16 governorship election.

Mrs. Alabi had last month resigned her membership of the party and as running mate to Akingboye to ‘’pursue new opportunities and directions.’’

In a letter she addressed to National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Shehu Gabam, Alabi said the decision to resign was not made lightly and that she valued her time with the party.

Candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, has denied working discreetly for candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Agboola Ajayi.

He said he dumped the PDP alongside his followers for the betterment of Ondo State.

Akingboye, who spoke in Akure, said he joined the SDP because the party’s ideal and philosophy were in line with his manifesto.

The SDP governorship candidate said information that he was working for the emergence of Ajayi was false.

He boasted that he would win the November election because several youth groups and artisans have volunteered to campaign for him.

Akingboye said: “It is laughable for people to say I am working for Ajayi or the PDP. I am in the race to win.

“Ondo people have seen that PDP and APC have nothing to offer. The SDP I represent is their hope to get abundant jobs, quality education, good roads, adequate welfare and free health care.

“There are no plans for me to step down. I will never do so. You will see how big SDP is when campaign begins.”
