  • ‘Youths are not encouraged to participate in politics’

Yemi Lawal recently assumed the position of Osun State Youth Leader for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) after his principal, Otunba Iyiola Omisore, and others left the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) earlier in the year. He speaks on the future of SDP and the plan of the youths to be more actively involved in the politics of the state ahead 2019, reports Adetutu Audu

WITH the passage of the Not Too Young to run Bill into law, many Nigerian youths have decided to join the political train ahead of 2019 General Elections.

For Yemi Lawal, the Social Democratic Party, Youth Leader in Osun State, youth inclusiveness in politics and transition is key. According to him, his mandate and objectives are very clear; the younger generation has been neglected and ignored in the times past and it is time to take the bull by the horn.

“We can’t continue to do things the same way and expect a different result. So, the mandate is youth inclusiveness in politics and transition into governance,” he said.

Commenting on the #nottooyoungtorun bill passed into law amidst jubilation in most quarters. He said that the bill should be embraced by the youths so as to show the older generation that the youths are actually useful by getting involved more in politics and making positive impacts in the entire society.

So, what does their movement from the People’s Democratic Party to SDP portend for Chief Iyiola Omisore and many PDP faithful that also defected?  He said that Otunba Iyiola Omisore and a host of others decamped to the SDP basically out of principle. “Like I said earlier, you don’t expect a different result doing things the same way. As we can all see in 2015, Nigerians voted for change which has brought us where we are today in Osun State and Nigeria as a whole, and as a patriotic Nigerian, there is need to be pragmatic and find a  credible alternative that can begin to do things differently  because we cannot continue like this,” he noted.

Lawal also described Omisore’s governorship ambition as a deviation from the past, adding; “We shall begin to do things differently and feel the positive impact of democracy. Democracy is about the people and nothing but the people; anything you are doing without a positive impact on the populace can never be regarded as dividends of democracy but things done for self-aggrandizement”.

Asked if youths in Osun State have been fairly included in governance and if they have enjoyed the dividends of democracy, he said “youths have not been adequately encouraged to participate in politics not to talk of governance. We are here to change the rhetoric and do things right. Youths are usually the engine room of any nation and the involvement of youths in governance cannot be overemphasised’.

On the plans of SDP in the coming elections, Lawal said SDP have shown intention to lead and that is what makes the difference. “Leadership is totally different from ruler ship and what we are experiencing today in Osun State is ruler ship and like I have been saying, we need a totally different approach to governance, which is what SDP is coming to do.

“Our government is going to have more of people with technical capability to manage various sectors and people with youthful energy that can withstand pressure and make things happen.  The youths in Osun are going to have the opportunity to have a government that would be close to them, understand their needs and the opportunity of taking part in decision making as it affects the teeming populace,” he said.

The present administration, he also alleged, “failed in terms of youth development and engagement. For instance, it seems impossible for the commissioner for youths, whose age is not youthful, to bond with the teeming youths. The state Youth Leader of the APC is a grandfather; how does this combine to ensure youth development when the contacts are not even youths. It is important to note that we must begin to put the right people in the right position if we expect to have a good and positive impact,” he said.

    Omisore refunds N100m to EFCC

    •Returns to anti-graft agency tomorrow
•Released on bail to two NASS members

A former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Otunba Iyiola Omisore, has refunded to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) N100million of the N1.310 billion public money allegedly traced to him by the anti-graft agency.

He has subsequently been released by the EFCC from its custody to two members of the National Assembly who stood as sureties ahead of meeting his bail conditions.

He is expected return to the anti-graft agency tomorrow to perfect the bail conditions.

Highly placed EFCC sources said the deal to allow the ex-Deputy Governor  go home  since his arrest on July 10 was on account of his health and promise  to refund about N1.310billion allegedly allocated to him by the Office of the National Security Adviser(ONSA) during the Jonathan administration.

The EFCC source said: “The EFCC granted Omisore bail on compassionate ground to attend to his health. He was actually in the hospital where he underwent surgery.

“This is an anti-graft agency under a leadership committed to respect for human rights. After undergoing operation and following his pledge to refund the N1.3billion, the commission granted him bail.”

The money was traced to his account and three firms linked to him.

The source said: “Before Omisore was granted bail, he agreed to refund the N1.310billion and a repayment schedule was mutually consented to by the suspect and the EFCC.

“To demonstrate his commitment, he has returned the N100million to the commission. The cash is what was left in his frozen account.

“We are hopeful that he will keep to the schedule of payment of the balance of N1.2billion.”

The source said Omisore could not immediately meet his bail conditions but was released to two members of the National Assembly who stood as sureties for him.

“We have respect for him and these National Assembly members.  Based on this mutual trust, we granted bail to Omisore.

“The EFCC has asked him to return on Monday to fulfill other conditions for his bail including getting two directors in the public service with landed properties. We hope he will abide by his pledge.”

Omisore was arrested over N4.745 billion allegedly allocated to him and others by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

Of this amount, about N1.310billion was traced to Omisore and three companies.

His accomplices include Governor Ayodele Fayose and ex-Minister of Defence, Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro, who has gone on self-exile in the United States.

According to a report by the EFCC, the funds were  remitted as follows: Fimex Gilt Limited(N160m)-8/8/2014in UBA; Metropolitan Consortium(N350m)-9/7/14 in First Bank; Sawanara(N300m)—1/8/14 in First Bank and Metropolitan Consortium(N350m)-1/8/14 in First Bank.

A top EFCC source, who spoke in confidence, said: “Preliminary findings have shown that N1.310billion out of the N4.745billion from ONSA was remitted to the three firms and the accounts of these three companies belong to Omisore.”

Rigging audio: Omisore admits attending meeting

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last August 9 governorship election in Osun State, Otunba Iyiola Omisore, has confirmed attending a meeting captured in a leaked tape, which allegedly provides details of how PDP leaders and soldiers plotted to rig the Ekiti election last year.

Omisore, however, denied that they discussed how to rig the election.

In an interview reported by Sahara Reporters yesterday, Omisore said Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, who was the PDP candidate, merely went to the army camp to complain that his supporters were being harassed by the soldiers while police officers were being disarmed.

“There was no meeting actually. Fayose went to the army camp to complain about soldiers arresting his people, alleging that former Governor Kayode Fayemi bribed soldiers to arrest his people. That was all.”

The audio clip, recorded by an army captain, Sagir Koli, revealed a meeting between Brig-Gen Aliyu Momoh; former Minister of State for Defence Musiliu Obanikoro; Minister of Police Affairs Jelili Adesiyan; Omisore and Fayose, allegedly strategising on how to rig the Ekiti governorship election.

Omisore’s admission came barely a week after President Goodluck Jonathan who was mentioned in the audio by Obanikoro, claimed the audio was fabricated and would not give it any attention.

“It’s all fabrications. Why should I investigate things that are not real?” the President told Wall Street Journal, in a recent interview.

Jonathan later explained that he did not rule out the possibility of a meeting, but denied the claim that it was about rigging.

Both Adesiyan and Fayose have admitted the meeting held but that it was not about how to rig the election.

Obanikoro denied participating in the meeting. The former minister threatened to sue media organisations, which have continued to report the issue.

Omisore, a former senator and deputy governor of Osun State, admitted urging the participants in the meeting to “calm down” when they went to complain to Gen. Momoh about disarming the policemen on duty and harassing the PDP members.

“What I am saying is that if you listen to that tape, you will know the difference. The issue being canvassed on that tape was complaints by Fayose about soldiers arresting PDP members and disarming policemen, simple!”

APC flays PDP candidate for using masked gunmen

•’He is afraid of his shadow’

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the Osun State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Otunba Iyiola Omisore, for using masked gunmen at his electioneering campaign for the August 9 election.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement in Abuja yesterday, said the only reason Omisore could have resorted to hiring “ninjas” for protection was because he was afraid of his own shadow.

It wondered how a man, who wants to rule a state, would be afraid to move freely among the same people whose votes he is seeking, saying the PDP candidate should “emulate Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who is barely distinguishable from the Osun ordinary citizens.”

“Every month, Governor Aregbesola leads the people in a jogging exercise on the streets, during which he mixes freely with them. Not once has a ‘ninja’ been spotted behind him in the name of security.

“During his ongoing electioneering campaign, Governor Aregbesola has continued with his tradition of being with the people without any invasive security. Mr. Omisore has a lot to learn from Aregbesola, and should realise that being a people’s governor goes beyond a made-for-television eating of roasted corn or riding of Okada,” APC said.

The party said if the PDP governorship candidate had known the history of masked gun men or “ninjas,” he would not have resorted to the use of masked gunmen for protection.

“The message which the use of masked gun men sends to the populace is that of intimidation, harassment, espionage, sabotage, assassination and terrorism. No one seeking to rule a state should want to be portrayed in that light. Therefore, we call on Mr. Omisore to immediately halt the use of masked gun men unless of course it is a deliberate ploy to intimidate and terrorise the same people he wants to govern,” it said.

APC said it was bad judgment for anyone, least of all a public official, to resort to the use of ‘ninjas’ for security at a time the country is reeling from terrorist attacks that have left thousands of people dead or injured.

The party wondered why uniformed or plain-cloth policemen as well as State Security Service (SSS) personnel were suddenly not good enough for the PDP candidate.

“Mr. Omisore and the PDP should please spare the peaceful people of Osun State any further harassment and intimidation. The PDP should prevail on its candidate to be civil. A man who wants to rule a state should not be afraid to mix freely with the same people. Osun people say no to ‘ninjas’.

“If Mr. Omisore and the PDP think we are crying wolf, they should monitor the comments being made on the picture that has been posted in the social media showing a ‘ninja’ standing behind the PDP governorship candidate. Perhaps then they will realise how much they have goofed,” it said.

  • PDP, Omisore plan to import miscreants to Osun, APC alleges

PDP, Omisore plan to import miscreants to Osun, APC alleges

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate for the August 9 election, Otunba Iyiola Omisore, of planning to cause a breach of the peace in the state.

According to the APC, intelligence reports at its disposal alleged that a plot has been hatched to import miscreants and thugs to the State of Osun to stage protests in order to create mayhem across the state.

In a statement issued on Saturday, APC further alleged, “These senseless and unwarranted protests are intended to manipulate the populace, the electorate and the electoral system in their (PDP and Omisore) favour.

“Plans are said to have been concluded by both Omisore and the PDP to create a virtual state of confusion before August 9 believing that if the plan works, it would facilitate an easier manipulation of the electoral process and their rigging exercise.

“This is a sinister conspiracy against law and order in Osun, which has been known and confirmed by responsible individuals and foreign diplomats in the country as a safe and peaceful place to do business and attract investments.”

The APC therefore called on law enforcement agencies to ensure that the alleged plan does not succeed in the interest of democracy, law and order and peace in Osun State.
