  • Subomi Balogun, Abiola Dosunmu: Ageless duo in bond with WHITE

SOME say it stands for peace, others say it is a habinger of good luck. Whatever is the case, two ageless celebrities, Otunba Subomi Balogun and Erelu Abiola Dosunmu, appear to have a timeless bond with colour white, particularly with regard to dressing.

For as long as anyone can remember, Otunba Balogun’s peculiar elegant style has been a trendsetter. The 84-year-old founder of one of the nation’s successful banks, is in love with colour white, so much so that he has created with it a unique style that is at once simple and powerful.

A holder of one of the highest traditional titles in Ijebu Kingdom, Otunba Subomi loves to appear at social and corporate functions  in immaculate outfits matched with a long gold necklace and original coral beads. Otunba loves gold jewelries.

It goes without saying that the accompanying accessories accentuate his looks in no small measure. It thus becomes difficult to list fashion trailblazers in Nigeria without a mentioning his name.

After a career that spanned several decades in the banking industry, he has remained a constant feature on the style and social scene, his strength being not necessarily in wearing the coolest trends or something that everyone likes, but appearing in outfits that stand him out. Even in his 80s, he remains a man of impeccable taste and style.

It needs be said that his penchant for good things also rubs off on his choice of vehicles. He will settle for nothing less than the most exclusive of luxury cars: Rolls Royce. At the last count, he has bought 11 custom-built ones from the British auto-maker and delivered directly to his palace in Nigeria by British transport bearers!

Just when you think he has slowed down on fashion, he confounds his numerous admirers by upping the ante such that it would not be out of place to write a book on his staying power.

But he is not alone in terms of style icons that would not go off the radar no matter how many new ones emerge. The Erelu Kuti IV of Lagos, Abiola Dosunmu, is caught in similar fashion. The shrewd businesswoman and socialite is also a lover of white attires.

A classic colossus who has bestridden the Lagos social scene for decades, her white outfits and accessories come in different designs.  In the last three decades, Dosunmu has been one of the stylish Nigerians who have popularised the all-white ensemble and made it a recurring trend.

In addition to sporting an all-white attire on all social and corporate occasions, the tireless fashionista also has a thing for customised white coral beads. The beads and her traditional wear ensemble has a lot to do with her appointment as the 4th Erelu of the Centre of Excellence.

So, when it comes to style inspiration for all-white elegance, no one does it better than Erelu Abiola Dosunmi and Otunba Subomi Balogun. They are unique because there are very few men and women who keep rocking this pattern and yet remain stylish even after they have transcended the league of 60-year-olds.

  • Otunba Subomi Balogun breaks another ground

Otunba Subomi Balogun breaks another ground

BANKING guru, Otunba Subomi Balogun, is showing no signs of slowing down as he advances in years. Like an experienced hunter, the owner of First City Monument Bank is an expert at turning ideas into concrete realities while they are yet no more than mere threads of thought in the minds of others.

That much is evident in his latest venture, Heritage Place, which seems to have materialised in no time at all to occupy a pride of place on the skyline of Lagos Island. The 13-storey building on Lugard Road, Ikoyi, is not your conventional rentable space either; it is a world class edifice with contemporary security and safety fittings. The tastefully designed and well-proportioned plaza has reportedly been opened for rent, although with the price being bandied about, it would cost an arm and a leg to secure a space in it.

It was learnt that interested parties would have to shell out 700 dollars for a square metre in Heritage Place. However, with the competition for space on the Island and the Olori Omooba of Ijebuland’s reputation when it comes to properties, the new edifice is sure to be fully booked in no time.

  • Otunba Subomi Balogun shines brighter at 83

Otunba Subomi Balogun shines brighter at 83

Founder of FCMB Group, Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun, is a household name in banking. The banking icon, who turned 83 yesterday, has touched many lives positively and created wealth for his people. As a mogul of the capital and money markets, he has devoted a substantial part of his private resources towards the care and service of the less privileged, writes COLLINS NWEZE.

There is no gainsaying the fact that Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun, the Founder of FCMB Group and Olori Omo-Oba of Ijebuland has reached an altitude in life that is shaping his attitude and gratitude to God.

At 83, his  conviction that he has a duty to devote the rest of his life to serve God, society and do things that add significant value to humanity has continued to wax stronger. As he often says, “when the final call comes, you will just open your hands and say, God, here I am. To be able to do that, you need the grace of God’’.

Indeed, since his birth on March 9, 1934 at Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State, Otunba Balogun has grown to gracefully become an outstanding personality, a great phenomenon and embodiment of achievements within his immediate environment and far beyond. His story is that of a man who understood early in life that the true essence of wealth is achieved only when it is deployed to the service of humanity, especially the less privileged.

A man of proven immense wealth who is highly regarded, respected and honoured in the society, the honour bestowed on Otunba Balogun does not, however, stem from the immense size of his wealth, but from the good use to which he has put this wealth for the service of humanity.

Over this period, he has garnered many epithets and appellations which present him as a colossus bestriding every aspect of national life. Apart from being the founder of FCMB Group, he is the Otunba Tunwase, the Olori Omo-Oba of Ijebu; the Asiwaju of Ijebu Christians, the Baba Oba of Ijebu-Ife and the Asalu-Oba of Ijebu Mushin. Otunba Balogun is a baron of the Nigerian capital and money markets; doyen, pioneer and role model of entrepreneurial banking in Nigeria; a constructive philanthropist and a distinguished church leader who has devoted a substantial part of his private resources towards the care and service of the less privileged.

A lover of children who has built several institutions for the health care, welfare and survival of children, Otunba Balogun is also a distinguished author, opinion leader, writer and a respected community leader whose contributions for community welfare have continued to expand even as he graciously grows older. A business icon, a philanthropist par excellence and a strong adherent to the Christian religion faith, he is also a strong character with unwavering inner convictions to which his resounding successes in many spheres of life could be attributed.

“I have a very strong character. There is nothing that I did that I wish I had not done. I have no regret over any of my past actions”, he says. Recalling when he was to set-up First City Monument Bank (FCMB), a wholly Nigerian bank which he singlehandedly established, he said he was coming up with a culture of excellence and he went ahead to define what the culture of excellence would be.

It is to his credit that he was the first to create a special dining room for banks and was also the first to insist on bank staff wearing dark suits and always come out, very smart. The culture grew like a wild fire, got situated in the Nigerian financial services and became a norm that has come to stay.

Quite early in life, at age 13, he found peace and with God, believing in His Son – Jesus Christ –and the scriptures in spite of his Muslim background. “My two parents were very religious but they were Muslims”, he says, recalling that when he was at Igbobi College, he was drawn to attend service. Continuing, he said, “Incidentally, my late mother was educated. I confided in her that I was going to convert to Christianity. The late Bishop Segun, who was a priest at Porogun Church in Ijebu Ode, converted me at the age of 13. Having accepted Jesus, I just found myself loving Him”. It is instructive that not only does this man loves God, but also loves reading the scripture and says that “the more I read, the more I get to know God and the more I love Him. I have become so much involved in talking about Christ”.

Perhaps, it is not out of place to link his disposition with inner purity which Otunba Balogun has externalised through his trade mark white apparels, buildings, cars, among others which, to him, are God-given. “People talk about my wearing white. I just felt at a point in life that I wanted to be pure and the nearest to purity is white. So, I chose white as my colour. Beyond houses, my personal vehicles, my everything is white,” he revealed.

Over the years, this icon of our time has distinguished himself with rare altruism – sleeping, waking  and thinking about how to impact positively on communities and people, especially the less privileged in his society.

Philanthropy is almost always an interesting part-time for those who have the giving spirit and for Otunba Balogun, it goes beyond a part-time to what could be seen as a creed; hence he set up the ‘Otunba Tunwase Foundation’ through which he ventilates his philanthropic spirit in services to the community.  On his 60th birthday, when he commenced the construction of the Otunba Tunwase National Paediatric Centre (OTNPC), he handed over a cheque of N10 million to the Chairman of the Management Committee to start off the construction.

In August 2000 when he presented his Memoirs, ‘’The Cross, The Triumph and The Crown’’, he specifically directed that all proceeds from the sale of the book should be channeled to the completion of the Project. In December 2011, he handed over the ONTPC to the University of Ibadan. And on June 7, 2013, the Paediatric Centre, then valued modestly at N3.7billion, was wholly donated to the University of Ibadan at a signing of Deed of Total Gift ceremony.

By the last count, he had awarded over 300 scholarships to many Nigerians at secondary and tertiary levels and has endowed, perpetually, an annual award of scholarships to the best students in Muslim College, Ijebu-Ode in honour of his late father; and also set up another scholarship endowment in honour of his mother known as “Iye Subomi Scholarship”.

Furthermore, this great philanthropist has endowments for the Nigerian School for the Blind at Oshodi, and has also instituted, through FCMB, an Annual National Marathon Championship for Disabled Athletes. These are besides other religious gestures. He has single-handedly endowed churches and established dioceses for some Christian denominations in Nigeria.

Otunba Balogun has several awards in his kitty. He is a recipient of the American Biographical Institute Inc’s Distinguished Leadership Award for outstanding contributions to the development of Investment Banking.

He is also a recipient of the University of Ibadan’s Degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) in recognition of his outstanding achievements both in the field of Law and his contributions to the socio-economic development of Nigeria; a Merit Award for philanthropic services to Ogun State in particular and the country as a whole, and also the Ijebu Development Association’s award and Council Membership of a number of multi-national Chambers of Commerce. The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria made him a Fellow of the Institute for his pioneering and outstanding contribution to the Banking Industry.

Otunba Balogun attributes much of his sound mind, firm stature and strong spirit to the supportive role of his wife, Olori Abimbola Balogun who is the proud mother of his four equally accomplished sons. “God gave her to me; I believe there was a manifestation of God’s influence on my choice”, he says, stressing that each passing day, so many years after, has seen to the confirmation of that assertion.

And as he clocks 83 on March 9, 2017, his simple message is:  “I want my God to use me. I want to spend the rest of my life giving my service to God and humanity. I want my God to give me the opportunity of showing my appreciation.”

  • Between Otunba Subomi Balogun and Oba Sikiru Adetona

One of the qualities of true friendship is for the two parties to understand and be understood; a bond with that special someone so deep that it outlasts the vagaries of an ever-changing world. This perfectly encapsulates the relationship between Oba Sikiru Adetona and Otunba Subomi Balogun. The friendship and sense of camaraderie between the two is like a deep-rooted tree whose roots only grow deeper as the years go by.

Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, and Otunba Subomi Balogun, the Olori Omooba of Ijebuland, are indeed very close. Those close to the two icons of the Ijebu nation attest to the fact that they have known each other for upwards of two decades, and, like fine, ageless wine which tastes as good as it did the day it was brewed, their friendship seems to be going stronger as they advance in years.

Otunba Balogun does not miss out on any opportunity to help the Awujale in any project involving the latter. That much was evident during last month’s Ojude Oba festival where Otunba Balogun lavished financial and moral support on the monarch. His company, First City Monument Bank, also played small part behind Globacom, the major sponsors of the event, owned by another prominent son of Ijebuland, Dr. Mike Adenuga.

With friends like Subomi Balogun, it is no surprise that the Ijebu monarch has experienced a long and peaceful reign.

  • Quiet celebration for Otunba Subomi Balogun at 82

Venerable socialite and one of the biggest names in the banking sector for the past four decades, Otunba Subomi Balogun, Chairman, First City Monument Bank, Clocked 82 last Wednesday, March 9.

Uncharacteristically, the white apparel-loving boardroom guru did not roll out the drums or pop champagne. Rather, everything about his birthday was low key. And not a few of his loyalists, acquaintances, associates and family members wondered whether this man of immense wealth had been tempered by age. The ever-smiling billionaire is quieter than ever these days, while ageing gracefully.

Hitherto known for his loud and extravagant shindigs, Otunba is letting go his old ways, preferring to devote a few naira to only important celebrations. Curiously, Otunba Subomi is an avowed lover of kids and he never likes to see them suffer, which explains why he spent millions of Naira to build the sprawling Otunba Tunwase Paediatric Centre in Ijebu, Ogun State.

Between Otunba Subomi Balogun and Oba Sikiru Adetona

A friend, according to William Shakespeare, is one who understands where you have been, accepts what you have become and still gently allows you to grow. Shakespeare’s assertion seems a perfect representation of the blooming relationship between the Chairman of First City Monument Bank, Otunba Subomi Balogun and the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona.

Those who should know told Celeb Watch that their friendship has lasted more than two decades and seems only to be growing stronger as they both advance in years. Those who sighted them at the just concluded Ojude Oba festival attested to the fact that despite their old age, the duo exhibited genuine love‎.

While Globacom was the major sponsor of the event, Balogun’s FCMB was also said to have heavily supported the festival, which was attended by prominent Nigerians.

Cecil G grooms son to take over business

SOCIALITE and ace fashion designer, Sesan Ogulana aka Cecil G may have been trailing the path of the likes of foremost banker, Otunba Subomi Balogun of First City Monument Bank who groomed his son, Ladi to take over the banking business from him after laying the foundation for the business and billionaire businessman, Otunba Mike Adenuga Jnr, who also made his children executive directors in his various business interests.

The younger Ogunlana, Kayode is a graduate of Sociology from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State which incidentally is the Alma mater of his father.

Like his dad, fashion designing for Kayode is also a gift. But his father had great influence on him, having been showing interest in the family business since his school days.

The younger Ogunlana started designing tops for his course mates and after graduation; he decided to toll the path of his father.

Already Kayode’s label CG is the extension of his dad’s Cecil G label which has been in existence for over two decades now.

While his father continues to cater for the clients he had grown with over the years, CG is targeted at the upwardly mobile fashionistas.

Court expunges Awujale’s name from suit

An Ogun State High Court sitting in Ijebu-Ode yesterday struck out the name of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, from a suit filed by the Fusengbuwa Ruling House of Ijebu-Ode against the founder of the First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Otunba Subomi Balogun; Otunba Olu Adebanjo and Alhaji A.O. Sote.

This followed an application filed on February 14 before Justice S.A. Olugbemi by Otunba Lateef Owoyemi, Prince Rasaki Akeju, Otunba Oladokun Ajidagba and Prince Adeleke Adeyemi for themselves and on behalf of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House.

When the matter was mentioned yesterday, the respondents – Balogun, Adebanjo and Sote – were absent, while the applicants – Owoyemi, Akeju, Ajidagba and Adeyemi- were present.

Prince Adesegun Adebayo and two others appeared for the applicants/claimants while Mr. Kolade Otukoya, who announced his appearance for the second respondent (Adebanjo), told the court that they were not unaware the matter was coming up yesterday.

Otukoya said he was “surprised” to hear the case being called because he was in court for a different matter.

Justice Olugbemi struck out Oba Adetona’s name from the suit and gave the applicants a week to amend the case and expunge the monarch’s name.

The Fusengbuwa Ruling House is challenging Balogun’s “attempt to impose himself as their Olori Ebi (family head).”

    Top-gear preparation for Subomi Balogun’s 80th birthday

Although it is still about two months to the 80th birthday of Otunba Subomi Balogun, preparations are already at fever pitch to make the event grand. It is indeed a season of jollity for the founder of FCMB Group. While his children, friends, families and well wishers have assumed various responsibilities for the event, the Otunba Tuwase of Ijebuland himself has taken giant steps to ensure a remarkable celebration.

At the 2014 annual prayers and thanksgiving held at his Otunba Tuwase Court in Ijebu-Ode penultimate Tuesday, he announced to the teeming guests who had come to celebrate with him that he would use the occasion of his 80th birthday to record another milestone in the long list of his achievements in life. The Oba Adesimbo Tuwase Museum of History will be launched by the man who is the head of Fusegbuwa Ruling House.

With the museum, Otunba Balogun intends to document the royal history of Ijebuland and all the important periods, personalities and events around the territory. Information scooped at the annual thanksgiving event revealed that the launch and birthday celebration will be held on the weekend of 15th and 16th March, 2014. Details of the grand celebration remain under wraps, but the event promises to be a royal one in every respect.

  • ‘Ijebu people must unite’

    ‘Ijebu people must unite’

The Asiwaju Onigbagbo of Ijebu Christians and Olori Omoba of Ijebu land, Otunba Subomi Balogun, has reiterated his commitment to bringing together Ijebu indigenes regardless of their religions and family backgrounds.

The First Monument Bank (FCMB) president said such move is vital for actualisation of dreams, agitation and ambition of Ijebu people.

He said he had built a monument of unity among the Ijebu people as reflected in the way the indigenes usually support his projects.

The octogenarian, who spoke yesterday in his Ijebu-Ode country home during an annual thanksgiving service, said he was committed to leaving a landmark legacy for unborn generations.

He noted that his commitment to the cultural development in Ijebu land made him to embark on the construction of a monumental edifice called ‘Oba Adesumbo Tunwase Museum and Hall’ in Ijebu-Ode.

He said the centre would be an archive for Ijebu tradition and also as events’ place, students’ meeting point and cultural centre.

He maintained that the unity being enjoyed by the people is among the achievements of the paramount ruler of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Adetona.

adding: “This annual thanksgiving service is to thank God for keeping Nigeria, Ogun State, and Ijebu region together till date. We started it 30 years ago and we still continue today. Oba Sikiru Adetona has suggested that the commissioning of the historic centre should be part of my 80-year birthday celebration and we have accepted it.”
