Owa Obokun stool: Royal family urges fairness in selection of new Ijesa monarch

The Bilaro Oluodo Ruling House has urged the Elders’ Council of Ijesa land to embrace fairness and equity in the selection of the new Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Osun State.

It was learnt that the mourning of the late king is about to be concluded, hence, the process of installing a new king is set to commence.

The stool became vacant after the foremost traditional ruler, Oba Gabriel Aromolaran joined his ancestors on September 11th, 2024 after reigning for 42 years on the throne.

In a letter dated November 30th, 2024, addressed to Governor Ademola Adeleke, Elders Council, and Aare Council, amongst others, and signed by its Secretary, Prince Adetoyese Adegbohungbe, Ofokutu branch of Bilaro Ruling House said equity, fairness, and tradition should be prioritized and guided by the community in filling the vacant stool.

The letter explained that “the last two Owa Obokun of Ijesaland to have emerged from the Bilaro Oluodo Ruling House and both from the Ajimoko-Haastrup Royal Family.”

The Ofokutu royal family raised concern that the Ajimoko-Haastrup Royal Family might present another candidate for the vacant stool; hence, this would amount to the denial of others who had waited for 125 years.

The Ofokutu Royal Family noted that any attempt not to consider the dynasty comprising numerous families, including Adeyemi, Adebusuyi, Adegbohungbe, Obembe, and Osundaunsi-Adeyokunnu, among others, would amount to obliterating the Ofokutu Dynasty contrary to principles of equity and fairness.

The family implored Agba-Ijesa (Elders Council) to be mindful of monopolisation of the Owa-Obokun stool to one royal family.
