Owoeri targets Swedish League top scorer award

Häcken forward, John Owoeri has revealed that his target in the Swedish professional league is to become the highest goal scorer.

The former Nigeria U-20 forward scored for his side in their 2-1 defeat to AIK on Thursday night at the Friends Arena, in Solna.

The 29-year old forward is currently the second highest goal scorer in Swedish league with 13 goals, just one behind Viðar Örn Kjartansson, who tops the scorer’s chart with 14 goals.

“I’m very happy about the goal, but disappointed that we lost,” Owoeri told Fotbollskanalen.

“It was not a good result for us, it feels bad. But the goal was fantastic. You must try as a striker, so I thought “I’ll shoot.” Since it went in, it was fun for me.

“It is my goal. Each season I always focus on it, to become top scorer in the league. I go in the right direction, and hopefully it will continue to do so.

“It would mean a lot to me. It is all players dream to become top scorer, so if I get it I would be very, very happy, and very, very proud of myself, my teammates, the coaches and the staff, everyone. They support me.

“Yes, of course. I have confidence. For me it is nothing special to have confidence. I’ve been chasing him (Kjartansson) from one to 13 goals, so a goal is nothing. I just have to focus, so I know it will come.”

  • Owoeri makes debut in Sweden

Former Nigeria international, John Owoeri, has finally made his league debut for Swedish Allsvenskan side, Atvidaberg.

Owoeri, who joined the club at the end of March, replaced midfielder Kristian Bergström in the 71st minute in his side’s 5-1 drubbing of Djurgarden at Kopparvallen on Saturday.

Atvidaberg were already leading 5-0 when coach Peter Swärdh introduced Owoeri into the match.

He made it to the bench in last weekend’s goalless draw away to Kalmar, but did not come on.

It is Owoeri’s second spell in Europe after joining top Dutch club, Feyenoord from Bendel Insurance in 2005/06, though he spent most of his time there on loan to KV Westerlo of Belgium.

He was released by Feyenoord after just one season, and has since then played for Enyimba, Heartland, Ismaili and Sunshine Stars.

Atvidaberg are eighth in the Allsvenskan standings after the latest round of matches.

Owoeri is a former Nigeria youth international and has won one full cap when he came on for Sunday Stephen in Nigeria’s 0-1 loss to Guinea in an AFCON qualifier in Conakry in October 2010.

N7.5M UPAID WAGES CAS queries Ismaily over Owoeri

JOHN OWOERI has reportedly completed his switch from CAF Champions League semi-finalists Sunshine Stars to Warri Wolves. However, he has unfinished business with his past Egyptian club Ismaily.

According to Ismaily Online , the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland has written Ismaily to respond to a complaint that Owoeri is being owed $50,000 (about N7.5m) in unpaid entitlements. The club must respond to that query on or before November 15.

It would be recalled that Owoeri unilaterally terminated his contract with Ismaily citing the club’s empty treasury and the security situation in Egypt.

He would later travel to the United States to test with a plethora of clubs in the MLS – Columbus Crew, Montreal Impact, Kansas City and Chivas USA – but talks collapsed after he failed to produce his International Transfer Certificate.

In FIFA’s earlier ruling last March, authority was given to Owoeri to terminate his contract and leave the club as a free agent.
