Owolabi Salis expresses shock over Chief Kanran’s death

United States-based lawyer, Owolabi Salis, has expressed shock and disbelief over the passing of Nollywood veteran, Kehinde Olusegun Akinremi aka Chief Kanran.

In a brief chat, Salis narrated a pathetic account of his last minute effort to save the life of the actor whose demise was announced only a few days ago.

Narrating his last moment encounter with the deceased actor, Salis recalled how Chief Kanran had reached out to him for support to which he did at two different times.

“On July 27, he sent two voice notes that he was severely plagued by appendicitis, which had subjected him to intensely unbearable pains, and would therefore need to under-go an urgent medical operation that would cost N700,000 and that he needed N350,000 to balance the hospital bill.

“On the same July 27, I immediately dispatched a sum of N350,000 to him as requested. On July 28, he sent a voice note of appreciation thanking me for my timely kind assistance. On August 1, he sent another voice note of appreciation.”

Salis further said the announcement of the sudden death of Chief Kanran got him completely shattered in an inexpressible shock from which he is yet to recover.

“On learning about the sad news of his death, I had promptly dispatched a sum of money, on August 18 as my token assistance for his burial,” Salis said.

He called on Nollywood and the government including well meaning Nigerians, corporate bodies and notable institutions across the nation, to make fervent effort to immortalise the theater veteran.

He described Chief Kanran’s exit not only as the passing of an era but also shocking, lamentable and devastating.

“Personally for me, Chief Karan captured and hypnotized my imagination, just like the generality of theatre buffs all over – with his amazing skills in those good old days, that his plays became an irresistible staple of recreation for me,even decades after my sojourn in the U.S. till this very moment,” he said.

Astronaut Owolabi Salis reveals how he tried to save Nollywood’s ‘Karan’

United States-based lawyer, Astronaut Owolabi Salis, has narrated a pathetic account of his last minute effort to save the precious life of Kehinde Olusegun Akinremi, the renowned Nollywood actor whose demise was announced only a few days ago.

Narrating his last moment encounter with the departed theater celebrity affectionately referenced as ‘Chief Karan’ his popular stage name, the Nigeria-born epoch-making Astronaut recalled that on July 11, the renowned Nollywood star sent a voice note, notifying him that he wanted to celebrate both his 70th birthday anniversary and 55 years on stage

“On July 27, he sent two voice notes that he was severely plagued by appendicitis, which had subjected him to intensely unbearable pains, and would therefore need to under-go an urgent medical operation, that would cost N700,000 and that he needed N350,000 to balance the hospital bill.

“On the same July 27,I immediately dispatched a sum of N350,000 to him as requested”, said the lawyer-Astronaut popularly referenced as “Oba Mekunu” ‘King of the Poor’, because of his humanitarian propensity for care of the needy.

“On July 28,he sent a voice note of appreciation thanking me for my timely kind assistance. On August 1,he sent another voice note of appreciation” said the epoch-making polar explorer who also scored a spectacular distinction as the first Black, both in Africa and the diaspora,to have travelled to the South and North Pole within a season.

However in a dramatic turn of events, the popularly acclaimed explorer and humanitarian icon revealed “that the announcement of the sudden death of the celebrated theater impressario barely three days later, got me completely swept off feet in inexpressible shock from which I am yet to recover.”

Expressing a deep pathos of lament,he revealed that “on learning about the sad news of his death, I had promptly despatched a sum of money,on August 18,as my token assistance for his burial.

He called on Nollywood and government including well meaning Nigerians, Corporate bodies and notable institutions across the nation, to make fervent effort to immortalise the theater legend

He described his exit not only as the passing of an era,but also “shocking, lamentable and devastating.”

“To worsen the pain was the fact that this man died at the threshold of his 70th birthday, a very significant milestone of existence that everyone had often looked forward to.

He remarked that his death was one tragedy too many,a very sad loss and indeed, the last

thing I had ever expected to hear.”

    “To be sure, Chief

    Kanran was an iconic

prodigy who bestrode the thespian firmament like a colossus. He was simply unique in his own sphere, and unsurpassed, throughout his eventful sojourn on the Thespian space.”

“His glorious passing rings with irresistible nostalgic passion,in his exploit that took after the tradition of departed grandmasters in the mould of Hubert Ogunde, Duro Ladipo, Kola

Ogunmola,Oyin Adejobi, among others who had carved an indelible footprint on the sand of time, on account of their legendary thespian exploits which remains always evergreen in memory.” Salis stated.

The Ikorodu-born Lagosian who in 2019, contested for governors on the platform of the Alliance For Democracy said the teeming numbers of his fans would particularly miss the charismatic

swagger, regal grace, confident poise, self-assuredness,mastery and flamboyance with which he acted out his roles, often cast in the imperial mould of a King or boss or romantic Sugar Daddy,or in other variants of superior authority as might be assigned to him as a role play.

“A defining moment in this regard” said Astronaut Salis, “was the occasion he took on the role of Alaafin Kanran, a ruler of the old Oyo empire whose reign was dogged by unmitigated explosion of chaos and anarchy, arising from the uncontrollable despotism of the then Alaafin who was notorious for his tempestuous temperament. It was the commendable eclact and dexterity with which he acted out this role, that succeeded in warming him into the affectionate emotion of the immediate past Alaafin, in the person of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi of blessed memory.”

“Of course,it was this commendable epic role, which earned him the unique brand of “Chief Kanran” the titular nomenclature standing out as an epitaph of his outstanding dramatic excellence, that equally warmed him into the hearts of the generality of theatre freaks not only in Nigeria, but beyond.”

But on a contrasting departure, Salis expressed that ” it was the mark of his uncommon prodigy that when offered the otherwise unfamiliar and challenging role of head of a gang of armed robbers in one of the plays in which he featured,he brought his natural creative adaptivity and acute dramatic reflexes to bear in playing the role with remarkably impressive flair and panache”.

“Personally for me, Chief Karan captured and hypnotized my imagination, just like the generality of theatre buffs all over – with his amazing skills in those good old days, that his plays became an irresistible staple of recreation for me,even decades after my sojourn in the U.S. till this very moment,he said.

On a grievous note of lamentation, the fore-most Nigerian Astronaut said it was not only saddening, but extremely pathetic, that the departed theater Colossus went through an excruciating buffeting of fate, in which he lost his cars, studio worth several millions of naira, including his house,in the wake of a severe outbreak of fire, noting that his burden of woes was worsened by the fact that his two wives died in quick succession,as he became homeless and resorted to sleeping in the church”

“Noting that it was unfortunate that he had to go through this devastating sorry pass of cruel fate without any attempt by well meaning Nigerians and government in particular to take meaningful measures to address his harrowing plight, in his life-time,he observed that ugly scenarios of such nature was fraught with the grim prospect to stifle or paralyze the impulse for creative expressions.

Against this background he called on the entire rank and file of Nollywood members to rally together in strong fabric of love and unity for a solidarity front not only to champion the cause of their members, but for government to take them more seriously.

Chief Owolabi Salis, a Nigerian-born lawyer and astronaut based in the United States, has become a celebrated national icon after making history as the first Nigerian to travel to outer space beyond the Karman Line.

Salis, who runs the prominent Salis Law Firm in New York, had long earned admiration—especially among African Americans and Nigerians in the diaspora—but his recent space adventure has catapulted him into global recognition. Since the mission, he has been warmly received in public places across the U.S., where he’s met with spontaneous applause, handshakes, hugs, and endless photo requests.

In recognition of his historic feat, plans are underway to honour Salis with a monumental tribute designed by Steve N. Barber, the world’s only official space monument sculptor. Barber revealed that the proposed monument for Salis would reflect the same level of prestige, commemorating the lawyer-astronaut’s groundbreaking role in elevating Nigeria’s image on the world stage. He called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, billionaire Jeff Bezos, and leading corporate organisations to sponsor the initiative in appreciation of Salis’s contribution to global space exploration and Nigerian pride.

“The monument will be a lasting tribute, expected to endure for 1,000 years, immortalising Salis’s place in history,” Barber stated. The piece, which will feature engraved inspirational quotes, is scheduled for unveiling on July 4, 2026—America’s Independence Day—and will later be transported to Salis’s hometown of Ikorodu, Lagos.

Commenting on his achievement, Salis reflected: “This is no small feat. Our planet is about 5 billion years old, and roughly 117 billion people have lived on it, yet only about 720 individuals have ever been to space. I feel honoured to be among them.”

Adding to his list of remarkable accomplishments, Salis also became the first Black African to travel to both the Arctic and Antarctic regions within a single season, visiting over 120 countries across all continents from January to July 2024.

FG applauds Owolabi Salis as first Nigerian to travel to space and return

The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has commended Chief Owolabi Salis for becoming the first Nigerian to successfully travel to space and return, describing the achievement as a major milestone for the country’s space sector.

In a statement released by NASRDA’s Director of Media and Corporate Communications, Dr. Felix Ale, the agency revealed that Chief Salis privately funded the mission, reflecting the growing interest of Nigerians in scientific, exploratory, tourism, and commercial space ventures.

“Salis’ achievement highlights new opportunities for private sector engagement in Nigeria’s space programme,” Ale said. “This milestone brings significant international attention to Nigeria’s space ambitions and positions the nation among countries whose citizens actively participate in space activities.”

According to NASRDA, Salis’ mission complements the agency’s efforts to expand access to space exploration for Nigerians. The agency had been notified of Salis’s mission prior to the flight by its partner organisation, the Space Research and Exploration Agency (SERA).

While celebrating Salis’ historic journey, NASRDA reiterated that its official collaborative mission with SERA, announced in June 2024, remains on track for a future Blue Origin spaceflight. Unlike the privately funded mission, the NASRDA-SERA initiative is designed to provide broader opportunities for Nigerian citizens through an open, merit-based selection process.

Dr. Ale added that the collaborative mission will allow Nigerians aged 18 and above to participate in astronaut selection and contribute research proposals aligned with national development goals. He said public input will be used to determine the research priorities, ensuring that the mission addresses challenges and opportunities important to the country.

“Chief Salis’ success demonstrates the expanding horizon for Nigerians in the space sector,” Ale stated, “but our upcoming NASRDA-SERA mission is equally critical, as it offers a transparent and inclusive platform for national participation in space research and exploration.”

Owolabi Salis makes history as first Nigerian Astronaut

A U. S. based lawyer and politician, Chief Owolabi Salis has blazed a historic trail as the first Nigerian to travel to space above the Karman line, the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space, located at an altitude of 100 kilometers (62 miles) above sea level.

The Blue Origin which took the history making Astronauts on the eventful flight, touched back on a grand arrival from the epic space adventure at the tarmac of the exotic space village in Western Texas, as they ran into the warm embrace of friends, families and well wishers, with passionate hugs, kisses and excited giggles.

Salis, the only Black among the crew of astronauts basking in radiance, resplendent in his finicky astronaut fatigue, emerged from the space-ship,in full glare of the cynosural universe of global watchers, amidst the ambience of the sprawling grandeur and beauty of the exotic space village, announcing his unforgettable historic involvement, which he dedicated to the victims of discrimination and civil rights violations

Salis was seen with an African made cap doned over the Astronaut jacket,as a patriotic gesture deliberately calculated to generate campaigns for greater participation of Africans in the exploration of space science and technology

The Blue Origin identity for the group is NS-33 and the group name is Solstice-33.

“Space is a humbling place. All those leaders causing troubles in this planet should be sent to space; they will be humbled and sober” – said Salis in a sobering fit of excitement

The dynamic and upwardly mobile high-flier,and visioner, who had criss-crossed virtually the entire continents of the world, was on board with a six-member NS-33 crew, comprising Allie Kuehner, Carl Kuehner, Jim Sitkin, Freddie Rescigno, Jr., Leland Larson, and Chief Owolabi Salis.

The eminent Nigerian Astronaut described the experience as “extremely humbling, stupefying and emotionally overwhelming as I gaped in wonderment, beholding the universe in its awe-inspiring splendour, and delightsome cosmic spectacle, with its eerie music resonating in surreal esctasy teleporting the soul to height

“It was indeed for me a great eye-opener,widening my vista, drawing me closer, more than ever before, towards my maker, the invisible one, whose creative mind had fashioned the inscrutable mystery of the universe, said Salis, the Spiritual Leader,Soul Maker’s Ministry Worldwide.

The eminent scholar and author of the classic book on “Equitocracy- a Diversity based democracy, who earlier had made history as the first Black African to travel to the extreme Polar divide of the North and South Pole, described the outer-space adventure as a diametrically different experience and simply out of this world.”It is an event which is better experienced than imagined”he intoned

“In embarking on this epic adventure, I am also inspired by the motive to fire the imagination of fellow Africans and Blacks in diaspora, on the limitless possibilities endemic in the Black race as a whole;to awaken every member of this highly endowed specie of the homo-sapien, particularly the governments of Black nations across the global universe to awake from age-old slumber and join the global mainstream of Super-power nations in lifting the world of science and technology, particularly the science of space travel to greater frontiers, for greater racial esteem and accelerated tempo of development within the larger macrocosm of the Black world” Salis stated further

Delving into his spiritual discovery Salis who is also the Spiritual Leader,Soul Maker’s Ministry Worldwide, remarked, “I went to space on a spiritual journey. What I found very interesting was that I was floating like a bird as I beheld the sprawling vastness of the space and our planet supernaturally suspended on the atmosphere, with no discernible extraneous force,at least naked to the physical eyes, holding it.That is amazingly mysterious. I went on spiritual pilgrimage for inspiration and spiritual research on the mystery of the soul, mystery of existence and the mystery of the universe, and I think I found at least a little hint of answers to my sacred quest”

“If our planet could be revolving so persistently in respect to a definite pattern or order, then a spirit being must certainly be in charge. I believe fully now that the spirit being, the Almighty Lord, or Controller of the Universe inextricably dwelling in us and connected with our souls is the right being to worship and nothing else. Again,it seems that this Omnipotent Controller of the Universe may necessarily not be the same as those misconstruely being misrepresented in many religious books on our planet.

“Another point of deep introspection in the course of my research was where do the souls that drive and propel us come from, and where do they go when we die? One thing that is clear,in all these is that whoever is responsible for our planet has set ample examples in nature ,worthy of emulation to solving the multi-faceted nature of problems and concerns as might confront us at one time or the other,in the voyage of life.”

“If you are busy perpetrating your magic on our planet, boasting in it as the ultimate of all powers;you will be disappointed to know that your power is nothing in space and you are just nobody. This indeed goes to pinpoint the supremacy of our Creator, who made all things, and our absolute powerlessness to question his authority.”

“All those leaders who thrive in causing trouble and formenting chaos and crisis at all times, should be sent to space to live just for one day. They will surely be humbled because space is a humbling place that offers quite a pretty sobering experience.

“And all those religious leaders and magicians, out there, going about propagating tissues of vanities should be sent to space to realize that the only Spirit Being worthy of praise is The Almighty Lord of the Universe, the Lord of Diversity and the Maker and Owner of all souls. This is not the same being as described in many religious books.”
