  • Fuoye crisis: SU seeks justice for slain, injured colleagues

Students Union(SU) of  the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, has called on government and civil society organisations to join hands with them to seek justice for victims of September 10 crisis.

The Nation earlier reported how two students of the institution- Oluwaseyi Kehinde and Joseph Okonofua, were killed by the police during a protest by the students over poor electricity in Oye and and Ikole Ekiti campuses of the institution.

Many other students were also injured when the protesters took their grievances to wife of the Ekiti State Governor Erelu Bisi Fayemi who coincidentally was in town to carry out her empowerment campaign. The protest turned violent after a police officer attached to Mrs Fayemi’s convoy slapped one of the students.

The state government has paid a condolence visit to the bereaved families, participated in their funeral ceremonies, and footed the bill of the injured.

However, the school management, state government and National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) will make their reports available on the incident this week.

SU President, Awodola Oluwaseun, lamented that Nigeria practises injustice instead of independence.

He said:“As the nation celebrates  the 59th  anniversary of our nationhood, it should be the day we celebrate our nation’s comfortable means of livelihood and secured sense of security, but what do we have here?

“Where is our sense of security and assurance safety if extrajudicial killings of our innocent brothers and sisters continue to go unpunished?

“Fuoyeites (FUOYE students) have not forgotten the evil perpetrated against us. However, we still appeal to both federal and state governments because of our civility, to seize the moments of the Independence Day in availing the deaths of our comrades.

“We also use this medium to appeal to all mother union-National Association of Nigeria Students, National Association of Polytechnic Students, National Association of Academic Technologists, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Academic Staff Union of Universities, among others, to ensure justice to the martyrs.”

Babatunde Titilayo Priscilla from FUOYE’s Department of Public Administration said the scholarship has prevented her from dropping out from school.

She said: “I was very happy when they gave me the scholarship. I am a hustler; and denying me this scholarship could make me drop out of school.”

He said: “I also benefited from the SEYEM08 Foundation. I’m very grateful and will continue to be because if I was not awarded the scholarship, perhaps I’ll have to miss exams again which may earn me an extra year. May you continue to flourish in abundant blessing.”

The Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Dosu Malomo, thanked the foundation for its gesture. He advised the recipients of the scholarship to make judicious use of it.

He said: “First, I want to thank this Foundation for reaching out to some of our students in FUOYE who are struggling with their school fees by granting them scholarship.”

Fayemi arrived the polling booth around 11am and voted after receiving voting rules and regulations from the election officials. .

Speaking with journalists shortly after casting the ballot, he expressed absolute confidence the APC will coast to victory without engaging in any anti-democratic means.

The governor stated that there was nowhere in Ekiti where cases of vote buying were reported, describing his party as law- abiding.

“Just check round, there was no place where votes were being bought. APC is a law abiding one and that we shall maintain.

“Whoever says we are doing that here must be believing in hearsay”.

He applauded the security arrangements, pointing out that democracy had come to stay with people allowed to make their choice of leaders without any fear or threat.

The governor praised the voters for their massive turnout despite postponement by INEC, saying this has shown that electoral process is maturing in Nigeria.

“With the feelers I am getting, the postponement doesn’t affect us negatively here in Ekiti.

“People trooped out massively to exercise their franchise, I am happy about that.

  • Ekiti 2018: Fayemi’s billboards destroyed by suspected thugs

People suspected to be political thugs have vandalized a billboard of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, in Oye-Ekiti.

The billboard located at Ayede junction in the town was destroyed during a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) rally held on Tuesday.

Sources in the community alleged that the billboard was destroyed by hoodlums led by a local government chairman who stormed the place in a Toyota Hummer bus.

The action sparked tension in the town as some APC members wanted to launch a counter-attack but were prevailed upon by their leaders.

But the state APC Chairman, Chief Olajide Awe, accused Governor Ayo Fayose of complicity saying “Fayemi’s billboard was vandalized when he (Fayose) led the PDP rally to the town.”

The APC boss said while the party has been appealing to members for calm, a repeat of such would not be tolerated again.

Awe said: “Fayose destroyed it with his thugs; we are taking action on it. I have told our members in Oye to be vigilant. In a situation where the governor exhibits that, it is uncalled for.

“It is abnormal, I have told our party members to be calm, we are taking action including judicial action against those who participated in the destruction of the billboard.

“Fayose was there at the rally at Oye town and the rally was organized by the PDP and the chief security officer of the state was there. What further evidence do you need?”

But the PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jackson Adebayo, accused the APC chair and members of his party of attempting to blackmail Fayose.

Adebayo said: “We don’t habour hoodlums in our party, it is APC that harbours hoodlums and you can see it from their recent congresses.

“PDP is a party of peace, our rally in Oye that day was peaceful and the governor and our members were not responsible for the destruction of the billboard.

“APC should search its ranks for those who destroyed the billboard if ever it was destroyed because I am hearing it for the first time. Governor Fayose knows nothing about it and our members know nothing about it.”

  • FG names varsity after Adebayo

    FG names varsity after Adebayo

The Federal University, Oye Ekiti, has been re-named Adeyinka Adebayo University, after the late military governor of the defunct  Western Region.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo stated this  at the funeral service held for the late elder statesman at All Saints Anglican Church, Iyin-Ekiti on Saturday.

According to Osinbajo, the decision to honour the late Adebayo was as a result of his exemplary leadership qualities and his astute belief  in the peaceful existence of the country.

The acting President recalled how the deceased technical advice to the then military government helped to put the federal  troops  ahead of the  rebels  during the 1967 civil war.

He said were it  not for the bravery and exceptional military professionalism exhibited by Adebayo, Nigeria would probably not be a united nation today.

In his sermon preceding the burial, the Primate of the Anglican Church of Nigeria, Nicholas Okoh, said though the exit of Adebayo at 89 may be sad and unpleasant to many, death was  a necessity that no mortal could  avoid.

Okoh, who was represented by the Dean, Church of  Nigeria and Archbishop of  Ondo Province, George Lasebikan,  said it was saddening that many Nigerians were desperate to acquire wealth at all cost.

He urged Nigerians to  change their attitude to life and  embrace humility and contentment for the nation to move forward.

VC raises alarm over overstretched facilities at Federal University, Oye Ekiti

Prof. Kayode Soremekun, the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University, Oye Ekiti, on Friday lamented the increasing number of students seeking admission to the university.

Soremekun said the management was taking steps at solving the challenges to both human and infrastructure and cope with the surge.

The vice chancellor spoke while presiding over his first and the 6th matriculation ceremony of the university.

He said it was his delight that the number of those seeking placement in the institution had doubled since he took over mantle of leadership about a year ago.

Soremekun, however, said his major concern was the limited facilities which the students had to contend with, but added that the university was taking pro-active measures to tackle the challenges.

According to him, a total of 3,000 new students were admitted, making it the highest since the university was established by the Federal Government few years ago.

He listed areas where efforts were being made to improve facilities on campus to include water, medical, lecture rooms, hostels as well as alternative power supply through solar arrangement.

“We are curtailing the surge by building more laboratories and expanding our frontiers in the area of basic facilities

“In realisation of the fact that government alone cannot shoulder all responsibilities in the education sector, we are also setting up a Revenue Generation Board to assist us in shoring up our internal revenue base.

“The board, when in place, will help explore opportunities in areas such as bakery, water production, distance learning, consultancy as well as post graduate programmes, among many others,’’ he said.

Soremekun enjoined the newly matriculated students to face their studies squarely by shunning all social vices.
