Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has hailed the Governing Council of Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), for developing the university to enviable heights within 11 years of its establishment.

Speaking on the education policy of his administration, the governor said his administration would continue to translate the state’s comparative advantage in education into wealth creation, in line with shared prosperity agenda of the administration.

This, he said, informed huge investment in learning facilities in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions in the state.

He commended Senator Ndoma- Egba for the richness of his contribution during his time at the National Assembly as well as his sterling contribution to national development as an accomplished lawyer, politician and public servant.

“When you were in the Seventh Senate, you were one of the few senators I took special interest in, because of the richness of your contributions on the floor of the Senate and by the kind of leadership you espoused. You remain a leader that I have absolute respect for.

“I must congratulate FUOYE for having you as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, I must also thank the President for putting a fit and proper person as the chair of the council of the university.

“Like you rightly said, I keep telling my friends that Ekiti State has the highest PhD holders per capital in the country. Our challenge as a government is how to translate that to wealth creation for the people. How to ensure that those titles solve problems for Ekiti. We must add value to the people and the state that will bring gains to the society.

“I can assure you that we will partner with you to ensure we realise those indelible legacies that you intend to leave behind. On most of the issues you raised, especially the issue of Certificate of Occupancy, the state will take that up immediately. We will also look into the request for fencing and I will also tell you that work has already started on the road from Oye to Are Ekiti.’’

Group hails Oyebanji’s performance in office in 2024

The Nigerian Human Rights Community (NHRC), a coalition of human rights and community-based organisations, has lauded Ekiti State Governor Abiodun Oyebanji’s performance in office last year.

In a statement after its annual general meeting in Lagos, the coalition of 130 civil society and community-based organisations named Oyebanji the ‘Governor of the Year 2024’.

The group said the governor would be presented with a plague to encourage other governors to emulate him.

The statement by its Director of Publicity Taiwo Adeleye and regional coordinators Kudu Abubakar (North), Digifa Werenipre (South-south), and Fred Ojinika (Southeast) said Ekiti has emerged as the most politically stable and peaceful state because the governor has been able to build bridges that unify all political factions and interests.

The coalition said Oyebanji’s activities during the year lifted Ekiti to become the best-performing state in the area of good governance, people-driven initiatives, transparency, and accountability. The statement said: “Ekiti was singled out in excellent management and utilisation of public funds and excellent implementation of public policies as detailed in the Subnational Audit Efficacy (SAE) Index conducted by Paradigm Leadership Support Initiative (PLSI), a non-state actor known for its work on monitoring public accountability.”

The NHRC said Oyebanji earned the recognition because his activities during the year impacted people living with disabilities (PWDs), the aged, widows, orphans and other vulnerable groups in society. The statement reads: “During the year, Oyebanji built the first PWD therapeutic centre in the country, thereby lifting over 300 people with disabilities in Ekiti State from stupor, despair and melancholy.

It added that Oyebanji supported the PWDs with over 200 assisting devices, including wheelchairs, and white canes, among other things. “The remarkable way PWDs marked the 2024 International Day of People Living with Disabilities stirred the conscience of humanity,” the statement said.

The group also said Ekiti State was adjudged the best performing on Disease Surveillance at the 4th Annual Disease Surveillance Meeting of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) held in Abuja. It added that the government has drastically reduced communicable diseases and infant mortality rates through aggressive primary healthcare services.

The statement said: “The government spent N1.5 billion to rehabilitate the state’s 177 primary healthcare centres to enhance healthcare delivery. Ekiti under Oyebanji has improved the electricity supply and construction of access roads to boost industrial development. The governor’s efforts were complemented by that of his wife, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji

“Apart from the 50 pupils she awarded scholarships from primary to university,  through her pet project, the Widows, Aged, and Orphans Hope (WAOH) Support Foundation, she has left landmarks through assistance to over 400 widows and orphans. The governor attributed the recent increase in allocation to the state, which had reflected in increased salary for civil servants, other welfare packages for citizens, who were not on government payroll, as well as ongoing and completed projects; to the magnanimity of Tinubu, who approved increment in allocation to states after the fuel subsidy removal.

Oyebanji expressed gratitude to Tinubu “for showing grace to him and to Ekiti people” saying, “after God, whatever we may have achieved is through the President, because when you find favour in the presence of the President, it translates to good things for our people.”

He noted that Tinubu’s policy shift ‘’is now being appreciated in some quarters that had earlier misunderstood him, citing the example of the decision of the management of THISDAY Newspaper to give the President Man of the Year Award, in recognition of his bold and courageous decisions, in the overriding public interest.
