  • Oyetola orders integrity test on weak buildings

THE Osun State government yesterday it is conducting integrity test on houses suspected to be weak in its domain. The measure is to prevent building collapse.

Governor Gboyega Oyetola gave the directive at the weekend, following last week’s collapse of buildings in Lagos and Ibadan.

Supervisor for Works Remi Omowaiye said that the governor’s directive would be carried out immediately to prevent building collapse.

He said: “All the relevant agencies and facilities in the state would be mobilised to ensure that what is necessary is done.”

The supervisor urged the public to report any observation they have on any building  believed to be weak so that immediate action will be taken.

The governor has also directed the Ministry of the Environment to ensure that drains are desilted regularly to prevent flooding during the rains.

Omowaiye said the ministries of Works, Environment, Land and Urban Development would collaborate to take pre-emptive action against building collapse in the state.

“We don’t want what happened last week in Lagos and Oyo states to happen here. That is why we are being proactive as directed by the governor,” Omowaiye added.

  • Oyetola, Akande urge Osun lawmakers-elect to be dedicated

OSUN State Governor Gboyega Oyetola has enjoined the newly-elected lawmakers to key into his administration’s growth plans.

He said the lawmakers were elected to make laws that would make life meaningful for the citizens, thus complementing the efforts of the Executive to strengthen good governance.

Oyetola spoke at two different events organised to fete the lawmakers after the All Progressives Congress (APC) claimed an overwhelming victory in Saturday’s House of Assembly elections.

The APC won 22 out of the 25 seats with results so far declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

A dinner by the governor’s wife, Mrs. Kafayat Oyetola, on Sunday and a lunch yesterday by former APC Interim National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande at his home in Ila Orangun provided the platform for interaction between the leaders and the newly elected lawmakers.

Chief Akande urged the new lawmakers to respect party supremacy and serve the people diligently.

Osun APC Chairman Gboyega Famodun also admonished them not to neglect their constituency and the party. He urged them to provide quality representation.

The newly-elected lawmakers led by Majority Leader Timothy Owoeye, Senators-elect Ajibola Basiru and Adelere Oriolowo attended the event.

Former Deputy Governor Adeleke Adewoyin and Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori, were among dignitaries at the dinner.

Oyetola urged the new legislators to be magnanimous in victory and see their emergence as a clarion call to serve the state and humanity.

He called on the lawmakers to see their constituents as priority in all they do and enact laws that would accelerate genuine growth.

He said: “Your primary assignment is to make laws that will strengthen democracy and  promote good governance.

“You are elected to represent your constituencies and bring to your constituents the dividends of democracy.

“I want you to key into our lofty policies to move the state forward as we are determined to ensure equitable distribution of wealth.”

A House of Reps member-elect, Mrs. Taiwo Oluga, promised on behalf of her colleagues that they would promote legislation that would bring succour to the people.

She said: “We will uphold the supremacy of our party – the APC – and give the needed support to the present administration.”

  • Oyetola’s first 100 days

Saturday March 9, marked the 100th day in office of Adegboyega Oyetola as governor of Osun State. After serving as Chief of Staff to Governor Rauf Aregbesola, he was elected as Governor on November 27, 2018.

Armed with two degrees from the University of Lagos, a commanding presence on Broad Street, Nigeria’s financial capital, and eight years as the Chief of Staff to the immediate past governor and without any personal baggage or scandal, it is beyond dispute that he was well prepared for the job.

The office of the Chief of Staff is the hub of government and Oyetola brought integrity, competence, wisdom, maturity and uncommon grace to that office. He made the government to run seamlessly.

By the middle of Aregbesola’s second term, it was clear to most people in the government (and even outside) that Oyetola fits the bill of a worthy legacy successor. This is why most of them supported him to succeed Aregbesola.

In contesting the governorship election, Oyetola could not have been seeking personal fortune. He had been a person of means. At any rate, Osun is not an ideal place for political bounty hunters. She is only rich in potential. It is therefore his goal to realise these potential and make Osun a prosperous state and a pride of her people.

Oyetola is suave and urbane – a well-polished gentleman – who is a thorough progressive. He has been able to cut a persona of a bourgeoisie with a sound grounding in democratic social welfarism. This implies that as a bourgeoisie, he knows how to create wealth. He balances this with genuine interest in the welfare of the mass of the people, in a democratic system. For him, wealth creation is not for self, but for the common good. The honey-dew of it is his determination not just to create wealth, but to entrench the culture and practice of wealth creation in the state. This puts him as a thinker and social democrat in the mould of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

He is not flippant and not known for making platitudes. This is because he is a full barrel. Those who have worked with him know that he is a visionary realist. He doesn’t make promises anyhow, telling people what they want to hear, as is the standard practice among the political class. He promises what is reasonable and realisable. However, when he makes promises, you can take it to the bank.

His private sector background must have taught him that leadership entails tapping the brains of as many people as possible in a collective effort at agenda setting, goal pursuit and realisation. That is why he never shies from telling those he meets to always pass their ideas across. For him, no one can do it alone.

One thing is clear in his first 100 days – it is continuity of his hard work and sleepless nights in running the affairs of the state. It is also the continuity of the good governance that transformed Osun in the past eight years.

One hundred days, by any standard, cannot afford any administration to roll out the drums. It is a period of intense engagement and putting in place the foundation for maximum eight-year tenure.

Therefore, in the past 100 days, he has met with all the peoples of Osun across the local governments and wards, obtained their demands and observed their needs, especially the most critical. He has also met with stakeholders and development partners – governmental and non-governmental – obtaining their favours and commitment to critical assistance and partnerships.

He has established a pattern of involvement in the five critical areas of governance. These are human development, infrastructure development, economic development, workers’ welfare and security.

Since coming to office, he has paid full salaries to workers every month as and when due. He has also made commitment to offset the accumulated arrears the moment the opportunity presents itself. He met with the 20,000-strong cadets of the Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme (OYES) and promised not just to retain their services but also to increase their monthly allowance.

Starting with healthcare, the revitalization of Ejigbo General Hospital has commenced. On completion, the hospital will have full complement of state-of-the-art equipment, safe water, new children’s ward, medical personnel quarters and asphalted internal road network. Adequate personnel will be available. For easy access, the 3.42-kilometre Ejigbo-General Hospital/UNIOSUN Junction Access Road linking the city centre to the health facility is being fully rehabilitated. The project has three months completion period, hopefully in May. It will cost about N300 million.

Also, Ifetedo General Hospital revitalization has started and is getting full attention.

This rejuvenation of health facilities has been extended to nine central hospitals/comprehensive health centres and 332 healthcare centres, covering each of the 332 wards in the state. This will make quality healthcare equitably available to all citizens and residents irrespective of where they are staying. Basic medical equipment, HIV test kits and other consumables to the tune of N87.7 million have been procured for the PHCs.

Construction of ten roads across major towns has also commenced. These are Ita Akogun-Ayetoro Road; Ile-Ife-Ijebu Jesa-Iloko-Ilesa (linking Ilesa-Akure Expressway) Road; Orita Cottage-Oke Gada Road, Ede; Isare-Ifofin-Iloro-Akewusola Road, Ilesa; Ikirun (Idi Esu)-Iragbiji-Ororuwo Road; and Dele Yes Sir-Baba Fansanmi-Okefia R/A, Osogbo. Others are Araromi-Anaye Market Road, Iragbiji; Mobil Petrol Station-Idi Oro Junction-Court Junction-Odebara Junction-Agodi Junction-Alasunkala Junction, Ejigbo; Ikire (Naira & Kobo)-Apomu-Ikoyi Road (linking Ife-Ibadan Expressway); and Odo Ori-Adeeke-Iwo Road (linking Ibadan Expressway), Iwo.

Many of these roads were wreaked by the heavy rains of last year, which brought untold hardship to motorists and other road users. With their rehabilitation, huge relief has now been brought to users of the roads as economic and social interactions have now been enhanced in the state.

To support the empowerment of rural farmers and facilitate movement of goods, there is an on-going massive grading of rural roads being undertaken by the local government councils. The councils are collectively grading not less than 500 kilometres of roads after Governor Oyetola gave them the mandate in January.

On security, Oyetola’s administration has refurbished 20 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) which have since been deployed to protect lives and properties across the state.

Seven fire stations have also been refurbished while15 fire vehicles have been repaired. These will assist in combating fire outbreaks and other emergencies across the state.

Government has taken steps to strengthen quality education in the state. On February 7, Governor Oyetola flagged off distribution of state-of-the-art school furniture, computers, learning aids and games equipment (including table tennis, basketball, athletics, etc.) to schools across the three senatorial districts in the state.

The most exciting however is the first Osun Economic Summit meant to generate a robust and sustainable economic development template that will launch the state into a boom.

With all arrangements already in place, the stage is set to ignite what will be the most significant activity in the state since its creation in 1991.

The blocks are being built as the direction the administration is going is getting clear. It is an encouraging one with the governor steadying his feet to provide quality leadership for the state.

  • What House of Assembly polls victory means for Osun, by Oyetola

OSUN State Governor Gboyega Oyetola has hailed the people for voting candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Saturday’s House of Assembly election.

The governor said in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary Mr. Adeniyi Adesina that having absolute majority in the legislature would enable the government to move at the pace that would fast-track the growth agenda of his administration.

The APC won 22 of 25 Assembly seats, whose results were declared yesterday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The party is leading comfortably in Oriade State Constituency, the only State Constituency whose result was declared inconclusive by the electoral agency.

“The outcome of the House of Assembly election is a further proof of the popularity of our party in this state. It shows that nobody can describe our victory in previous elections as a fluke,” the governor added in his reaction to the overwhelming victory.

Oyetola said with a steady support from the House of Assembly, there would be no inhibition for the government to deliver the democracy dividends that it promised its people during the campaigns.

The governor added: “Already, we have launched out on a massive scale in road rehabilitation across major towns. The grading of critical rural roads is ongoing.

“We have also flagged off revitalisation of nine major/secondary hospitals and 332 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) (one per ward) to take healthcare to our people at the grassroots.

“Our big plans for agriculture and mining will come on steam soon. We are set to hold our First Economic Summit to launch the state into a boom.”

  • Oyetola seeks private sector partnership in infrastructure growth

Osun State Governor Gboyega Oyetola has urged the public sector to continue to join hands with the government in the provision of infrastructure.

He reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to the delivery of economic and overall growth through provision of facilities for the people’s benefit.

The governor, who described good road network as a catalyst for economic emancipation and rural development, spoke during the flag-off of the rehabilitation of 3.8km Ile-Ogbo-Iwo Road in Ayedire Local Government Area.

The road is being rehabilitated by Peculiar Ultimate Concerns Limited as part of its corporate social responsibility.

Oyetola said his administration remained resolute to deliver good road networks to the metropolis and to open up the rural areas to boost their economic power, enhance the value of their businesses and farm produce and generally add value to their lives.

He said his administration had in the last three months embarked on construction and rehabilitation of several kilometres of road to enhance socio-economic activities of the people and to make lives more meaningful and abundant for the citizens.

He hailed Peculiar Ultimate Concerns Limited for supporting the state through project.

The governor said: “Partnering the Federal Government, foreign investors, corporate organisations and well-meaning philanthropists is one of the strategies of this government to deliver massive development to the people in this period of national economic dire straits.”

He appealed to well-meaning Nigerians and illustrious sons and daughters of Osun to buy into the dream of his government targeted to making lives better for the people by embarking on community projects.

Oyetola added: “Delivering development to our people is a holistic venture targeted at all the sectors of the economy.

“As you are all aware, massive overall development of our dear state is one of the cardinal objectives of this government and with this flag off, a foundation has been laid for communication, economic and transportation enhancement among the people of Ile-Ogbo, Iwo and their environs.

“I am happy that Peculiar Ultimate Concerns Limited has keyed into this vision, especially in the area of road rehabilitation which is central to rural and economic development.

“Today’s flag-off of the Ile-Ogbo-Iwo Road is a plus to the avowed commitment of our government to deliver economic and overall development to the people of the State, especially people in the rural areas.”

He listed some of the ongoing road projects in major towns like Ede, Ilesa, Ile Ife, Ikirun, Iragbiji, Osogbo, among others.

The governor spoke in Osogbo, the state capital, while hosting executive members of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Alumni Association in his office.

The governor told the visitors that his administration would collaborate with the association for capacity building, research and other areas in its drive to give Osun State the best of governance.

  • Oyetola to youths: avoid being used by bad politicians

Osun State Governor Gboyega Oyetola has warned youths not to allow themselves to be used by “disgruntled politicians”.

He admonished residents to always reflect the Omoluabi (thoroughbred) ethos, which Osun State represents, before, during and after the elections.

The governor gave the charge while addressing Muslim faithful at Islahu-Deen Central Mosque in Osogbo, the state capital.

He advised the youth to shun actions that can encourage the breakdown of law and order as well as disrupt electoral processes as the general elections draw near.

Oyetola urged the electorate, politicians and the populace to see election as a test for the enthronement of quality leadership and good governance rather than being an avenue to promote violence and mayhem.

He urged parents and guardians to care, guide and guard their children and wards, saying parents must begin to train their children to be diligent, disciplines and good towards others.

The governor, who reiterated his administration’s commitment to guarantee the security of life and property of the citizenry, said no efforts would be spared to maintain Osun’s status as one of the peaceful states in Nigeria.

“It is imperative for every citizen to shun things that can undermine electoral process and democratic system.

“I urge parents to educate their children on the need for them to do away with things that may taint the image of their families and the state.”
