    Police arraigned three for receiving stolen property

    The Police on Wednesday arraigned three men in a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates Court in Abuja for allegedly receiving stolen property.

    The accused, said to be all businessmen, are Kabiru Lawal, Abubakar Shehu and Mubarak Mohammed.

    They are standing trial on a one-count charge of receiving stolen property.

    The prosecutor, Oyeyemi Adeniyi, told the court that one Sa’ad Abubakar of Alibert Nig. Ltd, Abuja, reported the matter at the Wuse Police Station on May 18.

    Adeniyi said that sometimes between January and March, the accused received some carpets from one Augustin Bako and five others who are now facing trial in the same court.

    He said that the accused collected the  carpets knowing  well that they were stolen property of  Alibert Nig. Ltd.

    Adeniyi said that Lawal, the first accused, received 30 carpets;  Shehu,  the second accused,  received 20 carpets while  Mohammed,  the third accused,  received 40 carpets.

    He claimed that during investigation, some of the carpets were recovered from the accused having admitted committing the offence.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened section 317 of the Penal Code.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The magistrate, Teribo Jim, granted them bail in the sum of N100,000 each with one surety each in like sum.

    Jim, who ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, adjourned the case till June 22 for hearing.

    Cleaner remanded for rape of 6-year-old girl

    A Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday ordered the remand of 24-year-old cleaner, Olamide Balogun ‎in prison for allegedly raping a 6-year-old girl.
    The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, adjourned the case till June 15 for hearing.

    The defendant of Mabushi, Abuja, was arraigned on a count charge of rape, an offence he denied committing.

    The prosecutor, Oyeyemi Adeniyi, told the court that one Loveth Abdul reported the matter at the Mabushi Police Station on Jan. 23.

    He said the plaintiff discovered that the defendant had been having carnal knowledge of the 6-year-old girl, whenever she was left alone in the house.

    Adeniyi said that the offence contravened Section 283 of the Penal Code.

    Bash Ali docked for alleged criminal trespass, granted bail

    A Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday granted N100, 000 bail to a boxer, Bashiru Ali (a.k.a.Bash Ali) docked for alleged criminal trespass.‎

    The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, ordered the defendant to provide one surety in like sum that must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
    He adjourned the case till June 15 for hearing.
    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), recalls that the defendant was arraigned on April 3, on a four-count charge bordering on criminal trespass, intentional insult, inciting public disturbance and refusal to make statement.
    The judge had adjourned ruling on the defendant’s bail application after the defence counsel, Mr Tajudeen Adegbite, applied for his bail on self-recognition.

    The prosecutor, Oyeyemi Adeniyi, had told the court that the defendant criminally trespassed into the office of the Honourable Minister of Sport and Youth Development, Federal Secretariat, Abuja, on April 3.
    He said the defendant forcefully entered the office without the minister’s invitation and intentionally insulted the minister.
    Adeniyi said the defendant’s action attracted crowd and disrupted the activities of the ministry before the police within the premises intervened.
    He said that the defendant refused to make statement to the police when he was arrested.
    He added that the offences contravened Sections 348, 399, 114 and 143 of the Penal Code.
    The defendant denied committing the offences.

  • Two plumbers in jail for impersonation

    A Gudu Upper Area Court in the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday sentenced two plumbers, Mohammed Awalu and Mohammed Dauda, to four weeks imprisonment for impersonating soldiers.

    Awalu, 23, and Dauda, 29, pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and impersonating a public servant contrary to section 97 and 132 of the penal code.

    The presiding judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, who convicted them, however, gave them an option of fine of N40, 000 each.

    The Prosecutor, Oyeyemi Adeniyi, had told the court that men of the Nigerian Army Guard Brigade reported the matter at the police station on March 9, 2016.

    Adeniyi said that the convicts were arrested by Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operatives and handed over to military authorities when it was discovered that they were not soldiers.

    He told the court that both men were dressed in military regalia with the intension to release one of their friends detained by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
