  • Oyo APC: Buhari has made a new Nigeria possible

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has said the one year of President Muhammadu Buhari in office is a testimony to the realization of the dream of a new Nigeria.

In a statement issued yesterday in Ibadan to commemorate the 2016 Democracy Day, the APC through its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olawale Sadare, emphasized that the miracle of 2015 which made it possible for an opposition party in the APC to dislodge the then ruling party was the saving grace which Nigerians rightly explored to restore the hope of a stable, peaceful and ideal country.

“Even as the occasion of this year’s Democracy Day does not call for junketing in view of the prevailing economic condition, which is not peculiar to Nigeria though, the citizenry should be able to appreciate the fact that our collective desire for a strong, virile and prosperous nation is guaranteed now more than ever before because of the new order of purposeful leadership being offered by President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC government as against the 16 years directionless administration of the PDP.

“With the rank of the blood-sucking Boko Haram insurgents largely decimated, the hitherto quagmire of insecurity has been tackled and Nigeria now feel more secure in their country and beyond. Also, the serious war against corruption and indiscipline being championed by the Buhari administration is sanitizing every sector to the admiration of all patriots. Further more, the introduction of openness and accountability in the management of the affairs of the nation is enough to boost the confidence of investors and thus assist growth of the nation’s economy to the advantage of all and sundry.

“Pointedly, the good people of Oyo State should note that the administration of Senator Abiola Ajimobi remains the best thing to have happened to the Pacesetter State since its creation in 1976 and we implore them to keep faith as the governor is working tirelessly to increase the tempo of good governance and holistic development of the state which he was known for in his first term in office.

“The current economic reality is fast becoming a blessing in disguise for the people of the state as Gov. Ajimobi is poised to utilize the ugly situation to turn things round and set Oyo State on the path of self sufficiency, rapid progress and development. We have seen the governor demonstrate his astuteness and resilience in the past 22 months since allocations from the federal government continued to drop steadily while less of its implication was felt by the people.

“However, the coming days promise to be more eventful and joyful for the citizenry as arrangements have concluded by the governor to churn out unprecedented volume of dividend of democracy in the areas of improved security of lives and properties, massive provision of infrastructure and maintenance of the existing ones, focused exploration of all the potential available to free the economy from its current monolithic status, creation of job opportunities for the teeming youths, guarantee of qualitative health and education for the people, among other things,” the statement said.

  • Oyo APC disowns Alao-Akala

    Oyo APC disowns Alao-Akala

The All Progress Congress (APC) in Oyo State has disowned former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala.

Alao-Akala on Tuesday announced that he had joined the APC.

But the party said yesterday that “the news was received with shock because APC is not aware that he (Alao-Akala) had joined the party”.

The party’s Director of Publicity, Olawale Sadare, described the news as very strange, adding that “we do not know Alao-Akala as far as Oyo APC is concerned”.

Sadare said: “He is not in APC, however if he wants to join APC he is welcome. Let him join from the ward level. That is how it is done.

“It is very strange to us. We are not aware of his political moves. Here in Oyo APC, we don’t know him. He should start from the ward level and progress from there.”

But the former governor said some people in the APC were jittery because of his entry into the party.

Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Abraham Ojo, he said: “Alao-Akala did not only embrace the APC in a more celebrated way, but directed all his followers to return to their local governments and wards to register.

“Whether or not they like it Alao-Akala is a big fish. May be they are jittery that he is coming on board. For him to have made a public declaration that he has joined the APC, he would have spoken with party leaders.

“They should go and confirm. They should not be playing politics of animosity. If somebody of Alao-Akala’s status should come and make a public declaration that he has joined the APC and the Director of Publicity or anyone else is saying the party doesn’t know him, then he must be acting out of ignorance.”

  • Oyo APC: Ladoja should be jittery

Oyo APC: Ladoja should be jittery

The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday said former Governor Rashidi Ladoja has every reason to be jittery ahead of the judgment by the election petition tribunal hearing his petition against Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

The former governor alleged at a briefing on Sunday that Governor Ajimobi was boasting of victory at the tribunal.

But the APC described it as “alleged palpable apprehension in the camp of the former governor,” saying it was understandable.

A statement by its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olawale Sadare, said Ladoja and his supporters were merely looking for excuses which they would claim as being responsible for their inevitable humiliation at the tribunal when the much awaited verdict is delivered.

  • Oyo APC’s and Shittu

SIR: I wish to express my view on the needless noise being made by the Oyo state chapter of APC over the nomination of Barrister Adebayo Shittu as the ministerial nominee from the state.

It is very clear that those making the noise are unfriendly to Oke-Ogun, the most marginalized section of the state. Ordinarily, one would not have taken the noise serious, but the extent to which they have gone, by sponsoring advertorial on national dailies against the nomination calls for concern. Barrister Shittu is an hardworking man, brilliant and religious, he has an unblemished record since he came to the limelight in the old Oyo House of Assembly in 1983, hence if integrity, is what qualifies one for the position under the present administration, then why the noise?. I observed that those behind the move never wish the people of Oke-Ogun, any good.  Oke –Ogun people are loyal, faithful, and brilliant  and committed and that is what Barrister Shittu represents.

The man has electoral value even more than many leaders of APC in Oyo state, his party got the highest number of votes during the March Presidential election from his Saki West local government area, his unit also recorded the highest number of votes of the over 4,000 units in the state, then what do they called electoral value? Thank God, the noise makers never accused him of corrupt practice. It is indeed time for change and that was what his nomination represents.

    • Dayo Ogunsola,

Ilero, Kajola Local Government, Oyo State.

  • Oyo APC to punish erring lawmakers

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has said it will sanction any member found to have worked against the consensus candidates for the principal offices in the National Assembly.

In a statement by its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olawale Sadare, the party said: “As patriotic citizens and committed change agents, the leadership and members of the APC in Oyo State are embarrassed by the  situation in the National Assembly.

“And as a responsible and loyal chapter which appreciates party supremacy as fundamental, we identify with the position of the national headquarters of our great party which revolves around decency, discipline and national interest.

“We are very much aware of the inglorious roles played by some of our members who conspired with some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) elements to truncate the painstaking efforts of the APC to guide the majority members on the choice of leadership that could work with Mr. President to deliver on his promises and move the country.”

  • Stop lying, Oyo APC tells Ladoja

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has told ex-Governor Rashidi Ladoja to stop lying against the Abiola Ajimobi administration in his bid to get voters’ sympathy.

In a statement in Ibadan by its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olawale Sadare, the APC reiterated its threat to force Ladoja into retirement by denying him or his sponsored candidates any victory in the elections.

“The outcome of last Saturday’s elections obviously left Ladoja bewildered because he had hoped that the lies he either told personally or sponsored to set the people against the APC worked against him.

“But rather than being sober and remorseful, he raised his game and came up with more lies to discredit Ajimobi.

“Accord Party agents are all over spreading wicked rumours. They said that should Ajimobi be re-elected, he would sack some workers, carry out a demolition of legal structures, increase taxes and rule as a dictator. But these unscrupulous elements could not back up their claims with any proof.

“Few days ago, some supposed Ladoja-for-Governor campaigners were sighted around Olodo where they told residents that APC members were thumbprinting ballot papers meant for the April 11 election. Some discerning residents told them to report the case to the media and security agencies but they could not do so because they knew it was a false alarm.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Ajimobi has improved the lot of teachers and civil servants more his predecessors’. Never had he embark on anti-masses policies and he would not contemplate such when re-elected.

“We would like to remind Ladoja that the reasons his Accord Party failed to record any significant success in last Saturday’s polls are still there to make him suffer heavy defeat on Aprill 11.

“Voters cannot forget  how he exposed them to danger as a result of avoidable political turmoil from 2003 to 2011.”

  • Oyo APC accuses opposition of fomenting trouble

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has said there is a gang-up among the opposition parties, especially Accord, Labour and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to instigate violence.

The party, in a statement by its Director of Publicity, Olawale Sadare, said: “We do not need to join the emergency advocates of peace which  Rashidi Ladoja (Accord), Adebayo Alao-Akala (LP) and Teslim Folarin (PDP) have been since they started campaigning to come to the Agodi Government House. They are all one hand of violently leprous fingers.

“We do not have to convince the people that ours is not a violent government or party.

“In the three and half years of our being in government, we have demonstrated that we hate violence.

“Can Ladoja and Alao-Akala say the same about violence? Their governments almost grounded Oyo State. They are like the proverbial Ebolo vegetables, which cannot but manifest its smelly antecedent.

The APC said having identified that the election would be between a government that stood for peace against successive administrations where there were political murders, arson, violence and brigandage, the opposition parties were struggling to paint the APC “as a violent party too”.

According to the party, the violence in Ibadan South East which reportedly led to the death of one person, as attested to by the police, was a gang war between Accord thugs, and had nothing to do with the APC.

“If our people don’t know anything about Ajimobi, they know he can’t stand violence. He ordered a Pilgrims Board member sacked and charged to court for being violent. That violent man is with Alao-Akala now.

“He is one governor who does not go about with thugs. Let them tell us their  antecedents. Luckily, the world knows the truth,” said the APC.

On the allegation of capital flight, the party said it was an attempt by the opposition to profile its government, stating that no government had patronised local contractors as the Ajimobi government.

“Our party-led government will soon publish the names of all contracts awarded in Oyo State wherein we have Ladoja, his wives and campaign director as beneficiaries.

“Let them explain to the world how that amounts to capital flight. The truth of the matter is that, in about four years, non-local contractors are less than five, the rest are sons and daughters of Oyo State,” the party said.

    •’Allegation baseless’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Accord and Labour Party of sponsoring hoodlums to cause mayhem in Oke-Ado, Born Photo-Idi-Arere, to discredit the Abiola Ajimobi-led administration.

Its Chairman, Akin Oke, made the allegation while briefing reporters on the crisis in Ibadan, the state capital, yesterday.

Oke said the governor had toured 32 local governments and planned to end the tour in Ibadan South West, when the opposition attempted to discredit the exercise by sponsoring the mayhem.

He said the crowds that welcomed Ajimobi across the councils jolted the opposition and this allegedly made them sponsor the violence.

“Last Friday’s unprovoked attacks on our people at Oke-Ado and the ones recorded at Born Photo, Popo Yemoja, Idi-Arere and environs on Sunday as well as the mayhem in Idi-Ikan, Opoyiosa and environs on Tuesday showed the script which the opposition had prepared to create a tense atmosphere.

“If the opposition is not sponsoring the attacks, how would street urchins and political thugs be carrying out attacks on the one hand and the opposition would be reporting it live on the other hand.”

PDP’s spokesman Kehinde Salawu said: “How and where did the PDP perpetrate the violence in Ibadan? Can the APC authenticate this claim?

“The PDP is committed to the peace and well-being of the people of Oyo State. And we warn the APC to desist from tarnishing our party’s image.”

Labour Party’s Taiwo Ibrahim said the APC should put its house in order and stop making false accusations.

  • ‘ Oyo APC must put its house in order’

‘ Oyo APC must put its house in order’

Alhaji Adebayo Shittu, a lawyer, came into limelight in 1979, following his election into the Oyo State House of Assembly on the platform of the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN). The Saki-born former Attorney-General  and Commissioner for  Justice is an All Progressives Congress (APC)  governorship aspirant. He spoke with TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO on the political situation in the Pacesetter State, the Ajimobi Administration, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s quest for power shift and other issues.

Why are you contesting for the governorship in the APC when you know that Governor Abiola Ajimobi is interested in a second term?

It is not a constitutional right; it is a privilege to serve two terms in office. It is not a constitutional right that the incumbent must automatically fly the flag of the APC in 2015 election. Constitutionally, every governor spends four years. After four years, if he succeeds, he goes for another four years. I have a right as a member of the APC to also seek for the ticket of the party.  And based on the peoples’ assessment, particularly the assessment of the members of our party, if the incumbent has done well and the party can guarantee that, with him as the flag bearer in 2015, he could deliver votes for the APC, he may get the nod.  If on the other side, our party finds out that it will be too risky to present him for the governorship election in 2015, as I am sure that is the situation, I believe that members of the party would elect me at the primaries and I can assure you that in the Oyo APC today, I am the only person who can rescue the the APC  from imminent electoral defeat I because the entire goodwill that the governor had in the 2011 election has been blown off and today, there are disenchantments within the Oyo APC. Many people have grudges against the style of the governor.

Could you shed light on what you have described as the style of the governor?

To start with, a man may think he is doing well, but his best may not the best for the state. If you look at his scorecard, he has done very well in infrastructural development within the Ibadan inner city and, may be, in three other towns and Oyo State is far bigger than that. We have about 33 local governments. He has also done well in the beautification of streets by growing flowers and providing water to sustain these flowers. He has done well in sanitation and transportation.  If you look at the educational sector, I have not seen any achievement by the government.  For instance, lately, he just tried to embark on the white elephant project of six model schools across the state in a situation where, for instance, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State have built more than 30 schools and completed their constructions with 27 new ones in various state of completion. But, our  governor is just starting with six when he has about six months to the end of his administration. So, you won’t call that a pass mark, compared to what a sister APC state is doing.

In the area of employment, right now, there are more than 100,000 graduates in the state who are walking down the streets without job. Even, graduates of agriculture in their thousands are walking the streets jobless in a state where we have a fantastic productive soil; in a state when the sun shines when it should shine and when the rain falls when it should fall and this is one area where you should never have a problem.

People are frustrated. Besides, if you look at the 2011 election that brought our governor into office, he defeated the PDP governor by just 33,000 votes. Compare that with Governor Aregbesola who defeated the PDP with 103,000 votes. Come to think of it, you would recall that his triumph at that election was made possible because there was crisis in the PDP and PDP leaders particularly from Ibadan-Senator Teslim Folarin; Afeez Gbolarunmi; Alhaji Yekini Adeojo, Senator Lekan Balogun and  Wole Oyelese-supported him. They all work for Governor Ajimobi; they abandoned their party at that time  worked for him and that resulted in victory for Governor Ajimobi. Unfortunately, all of those who came from the PDP to work for him have gone back to their party because our governor was not grateful enough in action and speech.

What do you mean by ‘grateful enough’?

Well, if you have a benefactor and suddenly, the benefactor turns his back at you, what does that imply? Politics and leadership are about inclusiveness and not exclusiveness; when people work for you, you try to show them gratitude. Again, apart from the people who helped him to win the 2011 election, even erstwhile ACN members like Sharafdeen Abiodun Ali, Senator Femi Lanlehin, Senator Ayo Adeseun and some members of the House of Representatives from the ACN have also left the APC out of annoyance and disenchantment. So, you want to ask, could it be all of these people are bad not the one person who is a governor and who is in the better position to show leadership; he suppose to know the way he will give them the sense of belonging and show that leadership and governance is not about one person.

Again, in Oyo State today, market men and women are not happy with our governor, traders and civil servants are not happy with our governor;  the okada riders are not happy, transporters are not happy and today, if you walk down the streets of Oyo State and they see the symbol of the APC with you, the next thing they will say in Yoruba language is E fe e je tan na.  That cannot be a commendable statement. So, these are things you would see and assess and I know that for the APC in Oyo state, there is fire on the mountain come 2015 elections.

     What is the way out?

Before I answer your question, this would not be the first time, but we hope to pray it does not come to pass because in 2003, the AD lost election, at that time, the flag bearer was Governor Lam Adesina, the party lost in 2003, lost in 2007 and won in 2011 only because of the contributions of PDP stalwarts.  If in 2011, Akala has been change as the flag bearer of the PDP. If they had look for another candidate, who has not offended party members and the electorate, then, the PDP would have won that election.

In Ekiti, we know what happened. During the APC primary election in Ekiti, Fayemi recorded 177,000 votes for endorsement. Unfortunately, he could not score that figure during the governorship election. That led to his defeat.  The way out for us in Oyo State is to appreciate that a second term ticket for Governor Abiola Ajimobi is political suicide.

We cannot win, if he gets the ticket and that is why a lot of PDP leaders, a lot of Accord party members, a lot of Labour Party members are praying for Ajimobi to get the APC ticket so that they can defeat him.The signs are also there for our party members, the signs are there on the wall and it is for us to make hay while the sunshine.

What are your plans for the state?

I have seven cardinal programmes; I have always prided myself as a graduate of Awolowo School of politics. s a student of the great University of Ife, I was a member of a Committee of Friends, which produced the four cardinal  manifesto of the UPN, which was the platform we used for elections in 1979. I have learnt a lot from the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and my manifesto is formulated along his ideals. What were these ideals? The goal of governance must be the best interest of the majority of the people. I would spend greater part of my budget on what would benefit the majority and not on white elephant projects. The programme that touch the welfare of  citizens of Oyo state.

I will implement free education at all levels and I mean it.  It’s unfortunate that, since Chief Obafemi Awolowo left in Yorubaland, we have never had any government which has implemented that programme.

I want to revisit that, you know I want to implement it, I want to show to the world that with the best brain that God has endowed us with we can after all implement free education. What do I mean by that? Education in my government will be completely free at the primary school level; at the secondary school level; at the university level; at the polytechnic level; at the colleges of education level and so on and so forth. I mean government will take over the payment of school fees, I would not want to see a situation where any child of Oyo state is excluded from access to higher education because he does not have the means or his parents do not have the means to finance his education.

I intend to produce a hundred of millionaires in Oyo State by the time I completed my first four-year tenure in office.

What would you do, if you don’t get your party’s ticket?

If the primary election goes in free and fair atmosphere and it is acceptable, I will remain with the party and work for the success of the party no matter who emerges.

•Party welcomes 500 defecting PDP members

THE Oyo State All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Jumoke Akinjide, to desist from playing politics with the lives and wellbeing of the people.

Its chairman, Chief Akin Oke, spoke while reacting to a statement credited to the minister on the flood situation.

Akinjide was quoted to have asked the state government to spend the Federal Government’s N400 million intervention fund on the Apete Bridge in Ibadan, which was flooded a few days ago and reportedly took the lives of some passers-by.

But the APC chairman accused the minister of merely playing to the gallery and seeking to hoodwink the people for the purpose of gaining political advantage.

“The honourable minister was merely playing to the gallery. She is aware that the said money from the Federal Government cannot even construct the slabs on the three bridges of Apete, which together with the road network, is costing the state government about N6 billion. It is such politicking with the lives of our people that Oyo State had been grappling with under the Peoples Democratic Party,” the APC said.

According to the party, the APC-led government was the unfortunate beneficiary of the long years of decadence of the PDP in the state.

“During the August 2011 flood that ravaged Oyo State, 26 bridges collapsed and several roads were destroyed. The cost of reconstructing them runs into several billions. Save for the N400 million federal intervention that came when we had almost attended to the destruction the flood caused, we got no PDP or federal intervention.

“In a state that spends almost all its earnings on payment of workers, we deserve commendation and not condemnation from the minister and her allies,” the party said.

PDP members in Akinyele Local Government area of Oyo State defected yesterday to APC.

The defectors from the council’s 11 wards cited Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s equitable distribution of dividends of democracy to the people without recourse to party affiliation or religious persuasion as reasons for their decision to leave the PDP.

The state’s APC Deputy Chairman, Alhaji Isiaka Alimi received the new members with the secretary, Hon Mojeed Olaoya and the Caretaker Chairman of Akinyele Local Govt, Ope Salami.

Alimi said there was a wind of progress and development blowing across the state which required the support of all citizens to sustain.

He described the over 500 new members as partners in progress, adding that they decided to defect to the APC after seeing it as the only party that is progressive.

According to him, “the laudable achievements of Governor Abiola Ajimobi has attracted majority of the opposition party members.”

He urged members of the APC in the local government area to demonstrate love and spirit of accommodation to the new five hundred members.
