  • 26 burnt to death, 11 injured in Oyo auto crash

    Two commercial buses collided near the Ibadan end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Saturday, killing 26 passengers.

    The dead passengers were burnt to death while 11 others were injured in the crash.

    The buses collided while trying to overtake from both sides of the road at the same time.

    It occurred at about 7:00 a.m. at a portion where there was diversion due to road reconstruction near a quarry site.

    The two vehicles, which were fully loaded, burst into flames on colliding with each other. The passengers were trapped in the buses.

    The victims were evacuated by a combined team of officers from the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

    The state commissioner of Police, Abiodun Odude, visited the scene of the accident.

    Confirming the accident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Adekunle Ajisebutu, said 26 people died in the accident while 11 others were injured.

    “The fatal motor accident occurred at about 7:00 a.m. on Saturday along the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway by Quarry.

    “The two commercial buses involved had a head on collision and burst into flames. As a result, 26 people died while 11 others including three children were injured.

    “Corpses of the dead victims have been deposited at the Adeoyo General Hospital, Yemetu, Ibadan, for autopsy while the injured have been taken to Ibadan Central Hospital and UCH Ibadan for medical attention,” Ajisebutu said.

    Two people have been reportedly killed in a car accident involving a SUV Utility car conveying relatives of yet to be identified bridal train in Ibadan.

    Our correspondent gathered that the SUV which is among the cars in the convoy conveying the relatives of the couple was involved in the accident that killed the two victims.

    The incident occurred at Academy Area along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

    The occupants of the SUV were on their way to the wedding’s reception.

    An eyewitness told journalists that one of the deceased whose name was given as Saidat (Iya Kola) was the mother of the bride.

    However, the identity of the second dead person has not been revealed.

    Oyo accident caused by speed violation – FRSC

    The accident that killed eight school children and the driver in Oyo State on Tuesday was caused by speed violation, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) said on Wednesday.

    A Toyota Hummer bus conveying the students from Lagos to Kano was involved in a lone accident at about 10:50am around Motunde area of Oyo State.

    According to the Head, Media and Strategy at the FRSC, Bisi Kazeem, the accident occurred at about 25.5km from Ojo.

    Kazeem said, “The accident was reported at 10:50am at Ibadan-Oyo route, Motunde area 25.5km from Ojo. It was a lone accident involving a white Toyota Hummer bus with registration number KN76-A13.

    “18 persons were involved in the fatal accident including four male adults, one adult female and 13 children.

    “The accident was caused by burst tyre and speed violation. Nine persons sustained injuries, which are four adult males, four male children and the adult female.

    “Eight children were killed and the driver later died in the hospital. The injured were taken to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, and the corpses were handed over to the police who took them to the General Hospital, Oyo.”

  • Two survivors of Oyo auto crash ‘in critical condition’

    Two out of the eight survivors of the auto crash involving students from Kano State are in critical condition at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, on Wednesday night as concern grows over their full survival.

    The two are among the five pupils and three teachers that survived the accident and are being treated at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit.

    The accident reportedly occurred on Tuesday while 16 students and their teachers were returning to Kano after representing the state in a quiz competition in Lagos.

    Seven of the students died on the spot, while the driver, who was rescued from the scene, died few hours after arriving at the UCH.

    A reliable source at the hospital told The Nation on Wednesday night that while three of the pupils had been stabilized, two were in critical condition.

    The source added that five survivors would require surgery.

    The three teachers have also been stabilized at the time of filing this report on Wednesday.
