    Oyo College of Nursing launches four new faculties

    The Oyo State College of Nursing Sciences, Eleyele, Ibadan, has inaugurated four new faculties designed to meet the growing demand for nursing education and actualise the collegiate status of the institution

    The inauguration held on Tuesday, marked a significant step in nursing education at the institution, elevating former Departments of Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health within the College to standalone faculties of Medical Surgical; Maternal & Child Health; Public Health and Community Care, and Psychiatric and Mental Health. 

    The Provost of the College, Dr. Gbonjubola Owolabi, said this elevation, recognizes the college’s long-standing contributions to nursing education and the growing demand for its programs.

    She asserted that the new framework in the college marks a significant milestone for the institution and the nursing profession in Nigeria.

    Dr. Owolabi, therefore, urged the new deans of faculties to work assiduously towards the attainment of world-class products from the college.

    She appreciated the Heads of Departments, who are now Deans of faculty, for their effectiveness and commitment to the progress of the college.

    While commending the Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration, the Provost said the institution had initiated steps to commence degree programmes in collaboration with the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso

    She challenged the deans of faculties to foster nursing education, stressing that the different courses offered must be a tool for advancing the healthcare profession.

    She added, “This development is expected to foster growth and expansion of the nursing program in the College, benefiting both the college and the broader healthcare sector in Nigeria and globally.” 

    The Pro-Chancellor, LAUTECH, Prof. Ayodeji Omole, in his keynote address, described the inauguration as a historic and groundbreaking development.

    He praised the Oyo State College of Nursing’s bold step to infuse new faculties and departments into its academic system.

    He explained that the College’s bold restructuring filled a long-standing gap in Nigeria’s nursing education, particularly among Colleges of Nursing in the country.

    “With this inauguration of new faculties, the College will witness a turning point in nursing education and practice,” he said.

    Commending the Provost for her doggedness, he said that Dr. Gbonjubola Owolabi has redefined resilience as an administrator.

    He reaffirmed LAUTECH’s commitment to supporting the college’s dream to award degree programmes so as to align with global standards and best professional practices.

    Oyo College of Nursing partners NGO to tackle sexual harassment

    The Oyo State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Eleyele, Ibadan and the Gender Mobile Initiative (GMI) are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to aggressively tackle cases of sexual harassment suffered by students at tertiary institutions across the nation.

    The Provost, Dr. Gbonjubola Owolabi, disclosed this after a meeting with representatives of the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, and GMI at the College’s conference room on Tuesday.

    The meeting, which was witnessed by the management team of the institution, agreed to make a measurable impact in reducing or eradicating all forms of sexual harassment at the college.

    Speaking on behalf of the Provost, the Deputy-provost, Mrs. Iyabo Adeleke, said the MoU aims to strengthen existing efforts to prevent sexual harassment, including through policy development, capacity building, and promoting awareness.

    “The initiative is critical to upholding the dignity and rights of our students and staff, and so we key into this policy,” she said.

    She said that the College, under the watch of Dr. Owolabi, had zero tolerance for sexual harassment, abuse of office, and other forms of corrupt practices.

    The Executive Secretary, National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, Prof. Idris Bugaje, in his remarks, said the board, in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation, Gender Mobile Initiative, is committed to fostering safe, inclusive, gender-friendly, and harassment-free learning environments across all tertiary institutions, under NBTE’s purview.

    He said the policy is sequel to a stakeholder engagement on Sexual Harassment Prevention organised by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

    Represented by Mr. Bello Abdul-hakeem, the Executive Secretary, said the College must constitute an Independent Sexual Harassment Prohibition Committee or a gender-based violence response team to oversee the execution of the policy.

    The Executive Secretary also mandated the college to work with the Gender Mobile Initiative and establish clear reporting and response mechanisms to address cases of sexual harassment effectively.

    Speaking on behalf of GMI, Ms. Omotunde Blessing said that the anti-sexual harassment policy was jointly designed by ICPC with the support of development partners.

    She said that the policy involved the use of Campus Pal APP, a discreet online reporting platform with multipurpose resources available for users.

    Ms. Omotunde said the platform could be used by students to report cases of harassment for prompt and effective response by the college.

    She said the NGO will provide mini-grants to the institution to support the technical process of policy design and implementation of the policy.

    She said the rate of sexual harassment in tertiary education institutions was alarming.

    Omotunde said, “The situation of sexual harassment on campuses requires drastic measures to combat. We need to join hands to restore sanity in our educational institutions.”

    Oyo College of Nursing urges freshers to apply for NELFUND

    The Oyo State College of Nursing Sciences has urged all fresh intakes to access the student loan from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund).

    According to the Provost, Dr. Gbonjubola Owolabi, the loan will ensure that life is easy for the students and help them concentrate on their education.

    Speaking with the new intakes at the college on Saturday, the Provost hinted that the ftederal Government through NELFund provided student loans.

    Owolabi stated that accessing a loan is a simple step away for loanees as the NELFund loans create no barriers to any higher educational qualification.

    While urging the students to take advantage of the scheme, the Provost stressed that the institution will continue to partner with NELFund to make tertiary education accessible and affordable to its students.

    He stressed that the initiative is a huge relief for both parents and students who are into self-sponsorship, emphasising that with the NELFund loans, the worries of school fees will be a thing of the past.

    She said: “This is an intervention to cushion the effect of economic hardship on students, the Management of this institution has decided that every new student must apply and access it to further make student life easy for you.”

    She urged the new students to uphold the values of integrity, discipline, and moral uprightness as she warned against social vices such as examination malpractice, cultism, and indecent dressing, among others.
