    Oyo First Lady distributes food items to nursing mothers

    Wife of Oyo Governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde has charged nursing mothers across the state on exclusively breastfeeding of their babies for the first six months of their life.

    She urged families, employers, communities and other stakeholders to create enabling environment so as to encouraged breastfeeding mothers.

    Speaking in Ibadan at a programme to commemorate this year’s World Breastfeeding Week, Mrs Makinde, who was represented by the Commissioner of Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, emphasised the importance of breastfeeding, in line with this year’s global theme: “Prioritise Breastfeeding: create a sustainable support system.”

    She said: “Many mothers were forced to stop breastfeeding early due to lack of support from home and at work, that is why we must all work together to create an enabling environment for women to breastfeed their babies without shame.”

    She described breast milk as the baby’s first vaccine, which according to her is rich in antibodies that protect against children illnesses. 

    “Breastfeeding promotes emotional bonding between mother and child, and also helps mothers by reducing the risk of ovarian and breast cancers, and excessive bleeding after childbirth.”

    Makinde commended the state government for enacting six-month maternity leave policy, describing it as a major step toward encouraging exclusive breastfeeding.

    “I want to commend the Oyo State government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, for passing into law the six-month maternity leave. This policy gives babies the healthy, nutritious start they deserve. We urge private companies to adopt this as well.”

    She also emphasized the shared responsibility of all stakeholders in the breastfeeding journey.

    “Fathers must support mothers by helping at home. Employers must accommodate female workers with dedicated lactation spaces and implement maternity policies. Together, we can build a society where every mother feels comfortable and empowered to breastfeed, anywhere, anytime.”

    Executive Secretary, Oyo State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Muideen Olatunji, described the event as one that brings global health priorities to the grassroots. 

    “Breastfeeding is more than a maternal issue it’s a public health and community development concern. And it starts with awareness like this.”

    Also, Egbeda Local Government chairman, Hon. Sikiru Sanda thanked the Mrs Makinde for supporting grassroots women with both knowledge and food items. 

    “These donations and the enlightening health talks will go a long way in encouraging our mothers to stay committed to exclusive breastfeeding.”

    During the event, nursing mothers were gifted food items, baby care kits, other materials to support their breastfeeding journey.

    Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the state government’s gesture.

    World Breastfeeding Week, celebrated annually from August 1 to 7, aims to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and encourage protective policies.

    Oyo First Lady flags off 2025 mosquito net campaign, targets 5.6 million nets for distribution

    The First Lady of Oyo State, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde, has officially launched the 2025 Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITN) campaign in Ibadan to tackle malaria across all 33 local government areas of the state.

    Speaking during the flag-off ceremony on Monday, Mrs. Makinde was also formally unveiled as the State’s Net Ambassador. She announced that over 5.6 million mosquito nets will be distributed between August 1 and August 7, 2025, covering more than two million households.

    The launch drew key stakeholders including top government officials, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, community leaders, and international development partners. The campaign is a collaborative effort of the Oyo State Ministry of Health, the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), and global partners such as the United States Government through its Global Health Supply Chain Program – Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM), and Breakthrough ACTION Nigeria.

    In her remarks, Mrs. Makinde stressed the importance of malaria prevention, particularly among women and caregivers, urging residents to make use of the free nets.

    “Malaria, caused by mosquito parasites, is very common in Nigeria. If not treated on time, it can lead to serious health problems. But it is preventable,” she said. “I encourage all beneficiaries to use these nets, not sell or hoard them. Together, we can wipe out malaria from our communities and secure a healthier future.”

    She also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Health for nominating her as Net Ambassador, and lauded the government and development partners for their commitment to improved healthcare.

    Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, explained that thousands of trained personnel and volunteers will be deployed for house-to-house distribution and community education. “This campaign is about more than handing out nets,” she said. “It’s about educating people on malaria prevention, saving lives, and changing behaviours.”

    She noted that Oyo State is one of the states most burdened by malaria in Nigeria, but assured the public of the government’s determination to reduce transmission through sustained public health initiatives.

    Representing the U.S. Government’s GHSC-PSM, Nigeria Country Director, Jef Imans, praised Oyo State’s leadership. “Over 5.6 million nets worth $21 million have been procured this year alone,” he said. “These nets are life-saving shields, especially for young children.”

    Imans also urged transparency in distribution and called on field workers to ensure no household is left behind. “This fight against malaria is winnable if everyone plays their part,” he added.

    The event featured a symbolic decoration of Mrs. Makinde as Net Ambassador and a live demonstration on the correct way to hang and use the treated nets.

    Dignitaries in attendance included the Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaja Faosat Sanni; Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Toyin Balogun; Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Wasilat Adegoke; representatives from NMEP, USAID, local government chairmen, traditional rulers, and community health workers.

    Oyo First Lady urges teachers to promote menstrual hygiene among schoolgirls

    Wife of the Oyo State Governor, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde, has called on teachers across the state to support and promote menstrual hygiene among schoolgirls.

    Speaking in Ibadan at an event marking this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day, Mrs. Makinde emphasized the need for teachers to ensure that girls have the knowledge and resources to manage their periods with confidence and dignity.

    She encouraged educators to prioritise the well-being of their students, especially during menstruation, and to actively teach and support menstrual hygiene practices in schools.

    The event, which also celebrated her six years in office as First Lady of Oyo State, was attended by the Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni; the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi; and Ibadan North lawmaker, Mrs. Olufunke Comforter, among others.

    Mrs. Makinde urged teachers to educate their colleagues and empower girls with proper menstrual knowledge, while advising students to apply what they had learned to ensure healthy menstrual practices.

    She also expressed gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde for supporting the initiative and approving the program’s implementation.

    In his remark, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Segun Olayiwola, said the theme for Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025, “Period Friendly World,” was to make menstruation a normal part of life by 2030 and have a movement of period period-friendly world where taboos and stigmas surrounding menstruation are history.

    According to him, the theme aligned with several sustainable development goals (SDGs), including SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation), and SDG 4 (Quality Education), adding that it is not just a goal, but a call to action.

    He said, “Raise your voice against any stigmatization around you, support each other, and create a world where no girl is left behind because of her period.

    “Together, we can make menstruation a normal part of life by 2030, and the journey has started long before now. We can join Just Cause today.”

    He thanked Governor Makinde for giving an enabling environment towards achieving all-around education that is gender responsive, commending the governor’s wife for pushing the girls through the challenges, the stress, and expenses of navigating through their monthly flow.

    “The commemoration of this day is a way of reminding all of us that periods are nothing to be ashamed of, rather a call for celebration to which this gathering is committed.”

    Oyo First Lady charges women to lift others, inspire positive change

    Wife of Oyo State governor, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde has charged women, particularly those in position of authority to always lift others and inspire themselves for positive change.

    She said women in leadership position and influence must inspire and change others for the benefit of the society and the state at large.

    Speaking in Ibadan at the 2025 Annual Women of Influence Revival Network tagged: “The Builders Summit” Theme: “Equipping Leaders and Builders for Impact and National Transformation”, Mrs Makinde lamented how people, particularly women struggle in life.

    The governor’s wife called all women of influence to lower their heart and reach out to those in need and help them to be better persons in life.

    She urged women of influence in the state to ensure they leave good legacy behind, noting that true leadership is measured by the life touched.

    At the event, Mrs Makinde was accompanied by Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Mrs Toyin Balogun, Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaja Faosat Sanni and wife of local government chairmen among others.

    Oyo First Lady debunked rumor of alleged disrespect by Makinde’s aide

    The wife of the Oyo state governor, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde, has dismissed rumours that the chairman of the Oyo State Road Management Agency (OYSROMA), Busoye Ogunlade, disrespected her during a recent event in Ibadan.

    Reacting to a report by an online medium alleging misconduct by the OYSROMA boss, Mrs. Makinde clarified that the news outlet misrepresented the situation.

    In a statement issued by her office, she explained that the incident occurred on Sunday, December 15, 2024, during the launch of Pacesetter Transport Services’ Interstate Movement and PTS Express services at Eleyele, Ibadan. 

    The statement emphasized that the claims of disrespect were unfounded.

    “The First Lady of Oyo State was invited to the event and arrived before Mr. Busoye Ogunlade.

    “When Mr. Ogunlade arrived, he was not aware of the presence of the First Lady, among the dignitaries at the high table, among whom was the Hon. Commissioner for Special Duties, Hon. Faosat Sanni.

    “However, when an attendee drew his attention to the oversight, Mr. Ogunlade promptly apologized to those at the high table by prostrating to them,  including the First Lady.”

    The statement urged the public to disregard the news published by WisdomNewsNGR, emphasizing that there is no friction between Mr. Ogunlade and Engr. Tamunominini Makinde.

    The statement warned bloggers to desist from spreading untrue and unfounded rumours about the activities of the First Lady or face the wrath of the law.

    “The Office of the Wife of the Governor is committed to promoting the welfare and well-being of the people of Oyo State  and will not be deterred by false and malicious rumours.

    “The First Lady, Engr. Tamunominini Makinde is a strong advocate for the empowerment of women and girls in Oyo State.

    “She has initiated several programs and projects aimed at promoting education, healthcare, and economic empowerment for women and girls in the state.

    “The office is also committed to transparency and accountability and will continue to work tirelessly to promote the welfare and well-being of the people of Oyo State.

    “The public is advised to disregard any false or malicious rumors about the activities of the First Lady, and to instead focus on supporting the good work that she is doing to promote the welfare and well-being of the people of Oyo State.”

    Oyo First Lady seeks collaboration on breast feeding

    Wife of Oyo Governor, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde has called on stakeholders across the state to join hands in creating a society where breastfeeding new babies is a norm.

    She said all hands must be on deck to ensure provision of a place where nursing mothers feel safe to breastfeed their babies, saying in doing that, ‘we are building a healthier future for our babies.

    Speaking on Tuesday in Ibadan at the World Breast Feeding Week, organised by office of the Wife of Oyo Governor in collaboration with Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board, Mrs. Makinde maintained that breastfeeding is the first step towards giving children best possible start in life.

    She stated that breast milk is a natural vaccine that provides infant necessary antibody to fight diseases, and also provided essential nutrients for babies and strengthen their immune system.

    According to her, constant breastfeeding will also foster unique bond between mother’s and children, thereby laying foundation of life time of love and care.

    She said: “Despite breastfeeding important and advantages, yet some mother’s face some challenges in initiating and sustaining especially in public places and work places and there is need to close this gap and ensure that every child in Oyo state benefit from the life saving nutrition that breast milk provides.

    “Closing the gap need collective effort of all and we all need to share the responsibility to support our nursing mother’s because it is crucial.”

    She commended Governor Makinde for approving six-month pay maternity leave for women in Oyo State which according to her will enable nursing mother’s to focus on breastfeeding their babies, calling on private employer to do the same for babies to have healthy start.

    She thanked the primary healthcare workers in the state for their dedication and hard working, saying they are on the frontline on breastfeeding campaign because they are the first point of contact for mother at PHCs across the state.

    She applauded them for their professional advise and support they provide for nursing mother’s on breastfeeding.
