  • Police declare Oyo cult leaders wanted

    Following continued loss of lives and property during carnivals in Ibadan, Oyo State, the state police command on Monday reminded the residents of the state that the law prohibiting carnivals is still very much in force.

    It said the three suspects arrested in connection with the bloody Ileya carnival in Ekotedo have been arraigned in court.

    The command also disclosed that two leaders of the rival cult groups that unleashed mayhem on the people during the festival have been declared wanted.

    The two leaders of the rival cult groups are Okungbemi and Ojowelili.

    The state police commissioner, Mr. Samuel Adegbuyi had warned that it would deal ruthlessly with any individual or groups of persons found staging carnival in any part of the state.

    Speaking with The Nation on the effort of the police to apprehend the two cult groups’ leaders, the state police spokesperson, Mr. Adekunle Ajisebutu, said the duo are still on the run.

    “The two leaders have been declared wanted and the police are doing everything possible to bring them to justice. We are still looking for them. The law banning carnival in the state is still in force. And the people are reminded that the police will not allow any break down of law and order in the state.

    “Already, I can tell you that three suspects were arrested in connection with bloody carnival and the police had arraigned them in court , while the two rival group leaders are still been hunted by the police, ” the police spokesman said.

    The police in Oyo State have paraded Olayinka Taiwo (20), who allegedly kidnapped his three-year-old niece, Omolade Abdulsalam and demanded N200,000 from her parents.

    Commissioner of Police Leye Oyebade said Abdulsalam was kidnapped on March 30 at her residence at Adegbayi, Egbeda, Ibadan.

    He said: “Few hours later, the abductors called her parents to demand for N200,000 as a condition for her release. A report was made to the police and the victim was rescued in Adegbayi Alakia.

    “Security operatives stormed the criminal hideout where one of the suspects, Olayinka Taiwo, was arrested and the victim rescued unhurt at 1:30pm on March 31.

    “The suspect confessed to the crime and narrated how he and other members of the gang currently at large planned and carried out the evil act,” he said.

    Confirming that the suspect is her brother, the victim’s mother, Kemi Abdulsalam, said she received a call that her daughter has been kidnapped.

    “I was searching for my daughter all day before I was called by someone in the evening who said my husband owes him some money. I reported at the village head’s house and was told to report at the police station,” she said

    Taiwo, who studies Insurance at the Polytechnic of Ibadan, said:” I kidnapped my niece because my sister’s husband does not give me money anytime I come back from school.

    “I reported to my friend and he was the one who planned it. At first, I was reluctant to be part of the plan but he threatened me and that was why I gave him my sister’s number.”

    Also Olu Adewale (56) was arrested for parading himself as a lawyer.

    But Adewale claimed that he studied Law at the University of Lagos and graduated in 1976.

    “I did not attend the law school. I started practising in Kano where I had my first chamber before moving down to Ibadan in 2000.

    “ I believe that once I study law I can practise. I started practising believing that I can later go to law school but unfortunately I could not.

    “I have appeared in the Magistrate’s Court Iyaganku on behalf of a client before.”

    Oyo State police command has paraded one Olayinka Taiwo (20 years), who kidnapped his three years old niece, Omolade Abdulsalam and demanded N200,000 ransom from his parent.

    The State Commissioner for police, Leye Oyebade disclosed this at the command headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan on Tuesday.

    According to him, Omolade was kidnapped on March 30, 2016 at her residence at Adegbayi area of Egbeda, Ibadan by some kidnappers who took her toan unknown place thereby preventing her parents from having access to her.

    “Few hours later victims abductor called to demand for a ransom of N200,000 as condition for her release. When the report to the police the anti-kidnapping squad of the command immediately commenced investigation. Soon, the location of the victim was discovered somewhere in Adegbayi Alakia area of the state.

    “The discovery made the operatives to storm the criminal hideout where one of the suspects, Olayinka Taiwo was arrested and the victim rescued unhurt at 1:30pm on March 31,2016. The suspect confessed to the crime and narrated how he and other members of the gang currently at large planned and carried out the evil act.” he said

    Confirming that the suspect was her brother, the mother of the victim, Kemi Abdulsalam said he was contacted by someone on the phone, who called her in the evening that her daughter has been kidnapped and demanded for N200,000 for her release.

    “I have been searching for my daughter all day before I was called by someone in the evening who said that my husband was owing them money. I reported at the village head’s house and they told me to report at the police station” she said

    Also confessing to the crime, Olayinka Taiwo who studies Insurance at the Polytechnic of Ibadan, said:” I kidnap my niece because my sister’s husband does not give me money anytime I come back from school.     Olayinka said he regretted his action and seeks for forgiveness from his sister and husband.

    Also, one Olu Adewale (56 years) was arrested for parading himself as a lawyer.

    But Mr Adewale claimed that he studied Law at the University of Lagos and graduated in 1976.

    “I did not only attend the law school or call to bar. I started practising from Zaria in Kano where I had my first chamber before moving down to Ibadan in 2000 when there was a riot. I believe that once I studies law I can practice. I started practising believing that I can later go to law school but unfortunately I could not.

    “I have appeared in magistrate court Iyaganku Ibadan on behalf of a client before,” concluded.

     

  • Fake bank alert: Oyo Police parade four suspects for duping car dealer

    The Oyo State Police Command has arrested four persons for allegedly duping a car dealer in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, with a fake bank credit alert of N1.4million the Friday before last.

    Briefing journalists while parading the suspects at the Eleyele Police Headquarters in Ibadan, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Leye Oyebade‎, said that the car was said to have been advertised on Cheki.com by a car dealer, Mr. Segun Okeowo, who is based in Ibadan.

    Oyebade gave the names of the suspects as Kingsley Thomas, 25, Ifeanyichukwu Nwaegerue, 30, Ikechukwu Egbere, 28, and Uchena Agba, 27.

    The police boss said: “Two among the suspects, who were based in Port Harcourt in Rivers State, signified interest in buying the car on September 15, last month. The car, Toyota Corolla saloon car, which was purportedly stolen through the means by the suspects in Ibadan, was recovered from the accused in Port Harcourt.

    “Having completed negotiation, the suspects sent a manipulated false credit alert of N1.4million to the bank account of the unsuspecting auto dealer, who thereafter released and caused the car to be delivered to the supposed genuine buyer at Port Harcourt.

    “It, however, dawned on the complainant that he had been defrauded when he went to the bank for confirmation and was astonished to hear that no such money was paid. Consequently, upon the complaint, the command’s Special Monitoring Unit set in motion machinery to arrest the culprits.

    “On September 25, 2015, two of the suspects swallowed the bait set by detectives, walked into the dragnet and were rounded up somewhere in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The arrest and subsequent confession of the duo led to the arrest of other members of the gang, who were picked up at different locations in Rivers and Abia States.”

    The second group of the suspects comprised six persons who were alleged to have vandalised and stolen giant generators installed by telecommunication service providers to power their masts.

    They reportedly committed the offence last Tuesday. Items recovered from them included five giant generators, a half engine and one small welding machine at Okebola area of Ibadan.

    The third set of the accused consisted of two persons, Akpan Nyanya, 45, and Ebere Akagba, 43, who were alleged to have trailed one Ambali Lawal from a commercial bank in Iwo Road, Ibadan, where he had gone to collect N500,000. He was waylaid at Olubodun Street in Academy axis of Iwo Road by the two-man robbery gang operating on a motorcycle.

    “The armed hoodlums fired some gunshots to subdue their victim, but the alarm raised by the victim and sympathisers attracted the attention of a police patrol team from the Alakia/Adelubi Division. The prompt response of the policemen led to the arrest of the bandits,” said the police chief.

    Items said to have been recovered from the suspects included one English-made Barreta pistol, three live ammunition, seven expended 9mm ammunition and shells, and one Honda motorcycle with registration number NRK 475 QC.

    The police in Oyo State have arrested three inter-state robbery suspects, who allegedly stole a Toyota Highlander Sports Utility Vehicle in Sagamu, Ogun State.

    Parading the suspects yesterday, Commissioner of Police Muhammed Katsina said the suspects were nabbed by the Ambush Squad at Iwo Road Roundabout in Ibadan about 6pm.

    Katsina said: “Three inter-state robbery suspects who had earlier snatched a vehicle from a woman at gunpoint in Sagamu, Ogun State, were arrested yesterday by the Ambush Squad.

    “They were taking the stolen vehicle to Ikirun, Osun State.”

    Katsina who was represented by the command’s spokesman, Adekunle Ajisebutu, gave the names of the suspects as Azeez Omotosho (25), a native of Agbeye, Odo Otin in Osun State, who is resident in Sagamu; Fatai Ademola (27), a native of Ikirun and resident in GRA Sagamu as well as Jimoh Quadri (25), a native of Ede in Osun State and lives in Egbedore, Awo in Osun State.

    Items recovered included one cut-to-size single barrel gun, one kitchen knife, five cartridges, two phones and some charms.

    Quadri, who introduced himself as a farmer in Ede, said he was invited by his friends to Sagamu on Saturday for the operation they carried out on Sunday evening.

    He confessed that they trailed the woman to her house at Agura in Sagamu and snatched the vehicle as it was moving into the compound.

    His words: “At 8p.m on Sunday, the leader of the gang came to convey us to the place.

    “We got to the place at 9p.m. At the time we got there, the woman was just being driven in. As the driver opened the gate, our motorcycle went in as well. We asked her to come down and one of us pointed a gun at the driver.

    “He surrendered. The woman carried a baby and my colleagues wanted to beat her but I stopped them from doing so. The woman said she was just returning from Lagos where she had gone to carry her grandchild.

    “We entered the car and drove the woman and the driver away from the house. We dropped them at Ogere on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

    “That was my first time in Sagamu and that was the first time I participated in a robbery.”

    Another suspect said Ademola, the gang’s leader, whom he described as a cultist, drove the SUV from Sagamu to Ijebu Ode and handed over it to him.

    He was instructed to take the vehicle to Ikirun where a dealer was waiting for it, adding: “I and Jimoh Quadri were with the car at Ijebu Ode till about 4a.m. Then, I called Azeez Omotosho, whom I know as a driver, to come and help me drive the vehicle to Ikirun. But we were arrested at Iwo Road Roundabout this morning.”
