Adebayo’s death, monumental loss to Yoruba nation – Ajimobi

Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has described the exit of a former Military Governor of the old Western State, General Adeyinka Adebayo (Retd.) as a monumental loss, not only to the Yoruba nation but to the country as a whole.

In a statement issued in Ibadan on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Mr. Yomi Layinka, the governor said that the late General was a bridge builder and patriot who dedicated his entire life to the unity of the country.

Ajimobi said, “Even though Gen. Adebayo departed this world at the ripe age of 89, his exit has created a vacuum which will be very difficult to fulfill. He lived and breathed his last for the unity and indivisibility of Nigeria.

“As the President of Yoruba Council of Elders, the late General rallied his fellow elders to ensure the emancipation of Yoruba land and that the Yoruba nation was given its pride of place in the scheme of things in Nigeria.

“Papa Adebayo was a father of all, particularly those of us who have the opportunity of presiding over the affairs of the states created out of the old Western Region. We have all drank from his fountain of knowledge while his wise counsel has been of great benefit to us. ’’

Ajimobi noted that the family should be proud of its illustrious patriarch whose children have also taken to a life of public service, citing a former Governor of Ekiti State, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, as a quintessential chip off the old block.

The governor said he was proud and privileged to sit in the same hallowed office where great men and patriots like Gen. Adebayo once sat as governor of old Western State, which includes the present Oyo State.

Oyo begins enforcement of environmental laws

Oyo State Governor, Sen Abiola Ajimobi, on Wednesday, led top officials of the state on a roadshow across the state to sensitise the people on the preparedness of the state to begin the enforcement of environmental sanitation laws.

At each stop, the governor said he decided to lead the train to underscore the importance attached to the environmental sanitation and urban renewal flagship programmes of the administration.

The campaign, which took the governor and his team to markets in Bere, Oja Oba, Bode, Molete and Challenge, is expected to continue on Thursday (today) in other areas of the state.

Addressing the traders and residents, the governor warned them to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse, refuse burning and other violations of the state’s new sanitation laws, which he said would be fully enforced beginning from February 2.

Advising the residents to comply with the law, he said that violators would be brought to justice irrespective of their status.

Ajimobi said, “As we have been doing earlier, we have come again on environmental sanitation sensitization to make our people know that Ibadan should be one of the cleanest cities in Nigeria. We want Ibadan to be aesthetically friendly and environmentally attractive to investors.

“We want people to know that this sensitization has three goals; one is the health goal, a clean environment is conducive to good health; the third one has to do with invitation to investors, when investors know you have a clean environment, they will certainly come.

“As you can see now, we are doing road network with dualization of all entrances into the state and major cities across the state. This form of modernization will make our state the preferred destination for investors.

“What is important to us for now is that all our people must join hands with us and make Oyo State a better place. We want a good state that we can all be proud of and I’m happy that my people are very supportive.”

The governor said that the state could not afford to go back to the era when Ibadan, the state capital, was adjudged as one of the dirtiest cities in the country.

The Oyo State Environmental Laws prescribes imposition of fine and jail terms for indiscriminate dumping of refuse, street trading, building structures on the water ways and under high-tension cables.

Ajimobi urges prayer for Buhari, others

Oyo state Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has advised citizens of the country to continue to pray for the well-being of President Muhammadu Buhari and leaders in other levels of government instead of peddling unfounded rumours about them.

The governor gave the advice in an interview with journalists while dispelling the rumour on the president’s alleged ill-health shortly on his return from an official trip to Abuja.

Ajimobi said that he was in Abuja for a scheduled meeting with World Bank officials, stressing that no governor was invited to any imaginary meeting to discuss the health status of the country’s leader as being speculated.

Ajimobi said, “There is no iota of truth in the rumour making the rounds that governors were summoned to Abuja for an emergency meeting to discuss the health status of our dear President. We should desist from circulating callous insinuations aimed at denting the image of prominent citizens.

“Instead of peddling unfounded rumours, I will advise Nigerians to continue to pray for President Muhammadu Buhari and other leaders, including governors, because their well-being is tied to the well-being of the people.

“The rigours of governance require that leaders take time off to relax and recoup for the daunting challenges ahead of them. We should be fair to our leaders, because they are also human beings with feelings.

“It is pertinent to state here that the President only went for a break and to use the opportunity to undergo routine medical check-up. To the best of my knowledge he was not even admitted into any hospital for any ailment.

“There is nothing wrong with the President taking some time off to rest and meet with some people abroad unofficially. I’m reaffirming the fact that our President is hale and hearty.”

Recalling the negative comments that trailed his recent interaction with the protesting students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, in the social media, the governor said it was high time the medium was regulated to forestall its abuse for the good of all.

Acknowledging the importance of the new media for social mobilization and creation of awareness on development issues, policies and other positive intents, he said the medium was also being abused by some individuals.

Ajimobi said, “The social media is a veritable platform to disseminate developmental ideas, policies, mobilization for good intent as well as for entertainment, but some people would always hijack good innovations to destroy the peace and harmony of the country.

“The social media was recently used by the fifth columnists to do a smear campaign against me when they doctored the video where I was conversing with the LAUTECH students on the impasse between them and their management.

“Something drastic must be done before those who have good intentions for the people will be running away from politics just because they would fear some people would be somewhere lurking to unleash the social media on them for imaginary reasons.”

Petroleum Bill: Ajimobi advocate overhaul of operational system

Oyo State Governor, ‎Sen. Abiola Ajimobi has called for a total overhaul of the operational system of the nation’s petroleum industry through pragmatic and practical legislation.

He made the call on Monday evening at the expert session on Petroleum Industry and Governance Bill 2016 organised by the Progressives Governors Forum in Ibadan.

The session was to review the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) and Petroleum Industry and Governance Bill (PIGB) 2016.

Ajimobi said that the black box approach that has characterised the operations of the industry over the years needed to be addressed.

He stated that it was a major cause of the massive corruption and untoward practices in the industry, which has denied the country and people from deriving maximum benefit from the sector.

“I am of the view that these scenario has persisted because of the flaws in the laws and regulations guiding the operations of the industry. Most of the laws were prepared for us by foreign operators of the system at the advent of oil in Nigeria in 1957.The substance of the laws has remained unchanged and the order is the unusual concentration of powers in the hands of the president and the minister in-charge of the industry,” he said.

Ajimobi stated that both the president and minister could easily determine the fate of the nation’s petroleum and gas industry without consulting other relevant stakeholders.

He said that the nation has never sat to decide on a national economic intetest and the role the petroleum industry was expected to play towards its realisation.

According to him,” we have been contented with collecting and spending every revenue handed to us by the one- informed foreign operators.

The governor, who described the country as extremely gas rich said urged participants to profer informed and pragmatic solution to the challenges confronting the industry.

“No quality government is the primary cause of the myriads of problems that has continued to bedevil the realisation of the developmental role of our petroleum sector. This is with, of course the attendant negative socio-economic consequences of our country and citizenry.

“We must articulate the potentials of getting our economy out of the woods through the consequent improved governance within the nation’s petroleum industry,” he said.

Also, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy National Chairman, South, Mr Segun Oni, said that there was need for urgent reformation of the petroleum and gas industry.

Oni, a former Governor of Ekiti State said that it was the reason why the party had taken special attention on the petroleum industry.

He said that the party was optimistic that the industry could be reformed through better legislation and operations.

“The combination of the PIB and PIGB, if specially attended to with world class results, the industry will witness tremendous transformation. This will take the industry and nation greater and enviable height,” he said.
