  • Oyo APC factional group calls for fresh congress, new exco

Following the lost suffered at the last general election, a factional group within the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in Oyo state, known as Reformers has called for the immediate dissolution of the party executives from the ward to state level to pave way for a more popular and proactive executives to run the party affairs.

The group also disagreed with the party chairmen at the local government level that the party lost the last election in the state as a result of overconfidence and electoral fraud.

In a statement issued by the group’s secretary, Mr Sulaimon Ramon, the Reformers noted that the party lost the election due to imposition of candidates, lack of internal democracy, internal wrangling and high handed of the governor.

The group further condemns the call by the party chairmen at the LG level to make the party’s governorship candidate in the just concluded election, Mr Adebayo Adelabu the state party leader as well as nominated state candidate for ministerial slot.

The statement reads in parts, “We lost the election to imposition of candidates, lack of internal democracy, internal wrangling, high handedness by the governor and the incompetence of the party executive under Chief Akin Oke.

“What Oyo state APC needs now is a college of tested and patriotic party leaders under the leadership of a tested leader with credibility, sound knowledge of politics, grassroots mobilization, kindness and an army of loyal supporters. It is far from being a responsibility of a political greenhorn like Adelabu.”

The group accused the party chairmen of making the statement as a payback to the former governorship candidate after he released the buses used for the last election at their various local governments to them.

It advised the chairmen to understand that the party is bigger than individual greed and interest of each and every one of them, noting that “this was the way they hailed and shouted Sheu until Ajimobi led us to the present dungeon.”

The APC Reformers however advised the national leadership of the party to note that with the statement credited to the party chairmen at the local government level, they have not learnt from the latest avoidable failure at the election and they are yet to retrace their steps for future success.

It then called for the immediate dissolution of the party’s entire executive from the ward to the state to pave way for integration, harmonization and a fresh democratic congress which will “usher in a pragmatic, populist and proactive executive.”

  • Minimum wage: Ajimobi, Makinde bicker over Labour negotiation

Following his earlier promise to make workers in the state happier as soon as the federal government approves the N30,000 national minimum wage, the Oyo state government said it will on Monday open up discussions with labour leaders on the modalities for the implementation of the new wage.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi had on January 8, this year assured the labour leaders on the implementation when the workers visited his Agodi, Ibadan office during a peaceful protest to demand the implementation of N30,000 as the new national minimum wage.

The new minimum wage was approved and signed by President Muhammad Buhari on April 18, 2019 for immediate implementation.

The notice of the meeting was conveyed in a congratulatory message sent to the labour leaders by the Oyo state government on the successful conduct of its state congress which produced Comrade Titiola Sodo as the new NLC state chairman.

The message was signed by the State’s Information Commissioner, Mr Toye Arulogun.

But, in a swift reaction, the Governor-Elect, Mr Seyi Makinde cautioned the outgoing Ajimobi’s administration against negotiating the implementation of the new minimum wage with the labour unions.

Makinde, in a statement by his spokesperson, Prince Dotun Oyelade “queried the intention and sincerity of the outgoing government to open negotiation with the labour unions on the implementation of N30,000 minimum wage in Oyo come this Monday which is exactly 30 days to the exit of the Governor Abiola Ajimobi led outgoing administration.

The governor-elect stressed that there ”is nothing the lame duck government wants to achieve other than to complicate things for the In-coming government in exactly the same manner it is doing in awarding fresh contracts and rolling out largesse to fellow politicians and friends .”

Emphasizing that he looks forward to a progressive relationship with the new Sodo led NLC excos, Makinde warns against what he described as “any booby traps in the planned negotiation by the outgoing government.”

The Governor-elect pointed out that he was satisfied with the level of rapport he had with the NLC during and after the election and hope that this will be maintained as the new NLC executive assumes the mantle of leadership.

He reiterated his commitment towards ensuring that nothing short of the interest of workers will be acceptable to his administration as he applauded the rancour-free consensus that heralded the new Chairman as a good sign that democratic maturity has always been a virtue of the NLC, saying he believes that the new NLC leadership is circumspect enough to understand the ongoing theatrics.

They also insisted that his relationship with the Head of Local Government Administration (HLA) and other career officers and workers in the council was poor.

  • Ajimobi warns NURTW against violence in change of leadership

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State yesterday warned the members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state to eschew any form of violence and crisis in their effort at changing power.

The advice is coming following feelers from some quarters that a faction in the body is threatening to take over power from the incumbent immediately a change of guard occurs at the state governorship level.

Ajimobi gave the advice while playing host to the National President of the Union, Mr Najeem Yasin, who led other national officers of the union to his office on a courtesy call.

The governor noted that the union must stick to the provisions of its constitution in terms of change of power and ensure that the era of using cutlasses and guns to take over motor parks in the state should be gone forever.

While thanking the NURTW boss for his support to achieving peace in the state chapter of the union, Governor Ajimobi enjoined a strict adherence to the union’s constitution in the selection of its leaders.

Ajimobi said: “Our administration came on board when the state was a garrison command. There was brigandage everywhere caused mainly by the activities of NURTW members. There were so many no-goareas across the state, especially in Ibadan.

“We promised not to interfere in the activities of the union and restore peace to the state which we achieved tremendously. Our administration did very well by whatever yardstick anyone might intend to use and we are the most peaceful, successful and security-conscious administration in the history of the state.

“I am proud to say that whatever we have achieved today in Oyo State, especially in terms of peace and security, Alhaji Yasin and his executives contributed to it.

“On your election, just follow the law and do whatever the law says. Don’t bend it. And leaders must know that anywhere you are, don’t want to be there forever because you cannot be there forever.”

Speaking earlier, the NURTW boss said that nobody or group could take over leadership of the union unconstitutionally, noting that the era of taking over motor parks with guns, cutlasses and violence is long gone in the history of the union in the state.

He added that all transitions at any level of the union would be in compliance with its constitution, calling on members to sustain the peace established under the Ajimobi-led administration.

“Your Excellency, we are here in Oyo State to meet our members and after the meeting, I felt it is important to visit you. We want to appreciate you for the peace that reigned in our union in the state.

“Since the inception of our union in Oyo State, we have never enjoyed relative peace like the one witnessed under your administration. Today, we have forgotten the era of using cutlasses and other dangerous weapons to take over the leadership of the union in the state.

“Anyone who tries to take over unconstitutionally or violently should be ready to face the full wrath of the law. We are now affiliated to the International Transport Federation, and so we have gone beyond brigandage and violence.

“Some people have been going around that by May 29, another leadership is taking over but I have told them that it cannot be because it is against our unions constitution.

“By August, we would have our delegate conference where I will step down for another leadership to come in. In October, we will have state delegate conferences across the 36 states.

“We know the sacrifices you have made in our union to enjoy the current level of peace and stability and we will never allow anyone to take us back. And that is why we have come to thank you”.

  • Ajimobi, three others charged with alleged contempt of court

An Oyo State High Court holding in the Oyo Judicial Division, Oyo has adjourned till May 14 a case of contempt filed against the Governor of Oyo State, the Oyo state government, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development and the state Attorney General.

The ruling which slates the case for hearing on a matter which bothers on disobeying court orders was delivered at Court 1, presided over by Justice Iyabo Yerima on Thursday.

The subject of the litigation bothers on the revocation of contract awarded Rahvet International Limited by the Oyo state government for the construction of a 10,000 metric tonne 4 bin silos projects situated at Oyo-Awe Road, by Awe junction, Oyo town. The projects currently stand at about 85 per cent completed.

In a case with suit number HOY/06/2019 between Rahvet International Limited (the claimant/applicant) and Governor of Oyo State, the Oyo State government, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development and state Attorney General as the first, second, third and fourth defendants/respondents respectively, the claimant (Rahvet Int’l Ltd) had filed an application by way of Motion Exparte for two interim injunctions from the court and which were granted.

The Court in a ruling dated 9th of April in granting the claimant’s motion had in the ruling restrained both the claimant and the defendants from gaining access to the project site or do any kind of work on the site pending the determination of the legality of the contract termination by the government.

The motion ex-parte as sort by the claimant and granted by the court was “interim injunction restraining the defendants by themselves, their assign, officials, commissioners, permanent secretaries, agents, servants, privies or otherwise howsoever from forcefully taking over and breaking into the project site of the 10,000 metric tonnes 4 bin silos project situated at Oyo-Awe Road, by Awe junction, Oyo town pending the determination of the interlocutory application.

“Interim injunction restraining the defendants by themselves, their assign, officials, commissioners, permanent secretaries, agents, servants, privies or otherwise howsoever from tampering with or in any way dealing with any or all of the equipment stored by the Applicant within the premises of the project site of the 10,000 metric tonnes 4 bin silos project situated at Oyo-Awe Road, by Awe junction, Oyo town or in any way attempting to install the equipment without the active and direct participation and main involvement of the Claimant and its Technical partners, that is, the Chinese equipment manufacturers, China National Heavy Machine Corporation (CHMC) pending the determination of the interlocutory application.”

During proceedings, counsel to the claimants, Mr Bode Elemide told the court that he was surprised that the defendants could “deliberately, callously, maliciously and flagrantly flout the order of the Court”, just a day after the judgement by breaking into the project site and replacing the padlock with.

He further told the court the names of some prominent personalities and top government functionaries who were part of the team that ‘invaded’ the project site to perform certain fetish ceremonies, adding that filing the contempt proceeding was in accordance with Order 42 Rules 9 and 10 of the Oyo State High Court (Civil Procedures) Rules, 2010.

Responding, Counsel to all the defendants, Mr Nojeem Abiola, a deputy director with the state ministry of justice denied knowledge of the incident and that he was not informed or carried along by the defendants, noting that he could not also ascertain the true position of the claimants on the invasion and disobedience of the court order before the Thursday court session.

Before giving the ruling, Justice Yerima noted that the court does not pry its eyes into the affairs of the other arms of government, wondering why any arms of government should disobey a court order.

She also expressed shock that the Counsel to the defendants could stand to defend the defendants  when he should actually defend the integrity of the profession by encouraging that the court order be adhered to.

She later ruled that the case be adjourned to May 14 for hearing on why the defendants should not be committed to prison for flouting the April 9thcourt order.

  • Two persons die as petrol tanker goes up in Ibadan

TWO unidentified persons were yesterday burnt beyond recognition when a tanker conveying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) spilled its content on Sawmill Bridge, Onipepeye area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The incident, which started at about 2p.m., also destroyed six vehicles, more than 10 motorcycles and many houses.

Safe for the timely intervention of the men of the state fire service, the situation would have resulted in a likely explosion from a nearby gas station around the Onipepeye area as a result of the fuel spill, which also extended to parts of the Onipepeye area.

According to sources, motorists and commuters scampered for safety when the tanker driver coming from Lagos axis end of the expressway lost control of the vehicle just after the Sawmill Bridge.

In a bid to stabilise the vehicle, the driver could not prevent the fuel from spilling on the highway.

In the process, a man and a woman were burnt beyond recognition while trying to escape from the scene of the fuel spill.

The identity and whereabouts of the driver of the fuel tanker remain unknown at the time of filing this report.

A witness, who identified himself as Abbey, said: “It was the fuel spill from the tanker at the main road that caused the fire that sparked from under Onipepeye Bridge. Before we could know what happened, we heard a big explosion. It was terrifying. There were tick flames everywhere. In the process, people started running away from the scene. Two persons were so unlucky, as they were burnt beyond recognition.

”We called the fire service personnel to come and rescue the situation before the fire started. But it took them more than 40 minutes before they arrived. And by the time they got here, the fire had already burnt the two people to death.

“The victims were inside a car, trying to navigate their way to the main expressway. They should be coming from either Gbagi market or Gate axis. We did not recognise any of them. As you can see, they are burnt beyond recognition with all their personal belongings also burnt with them.”

Assistant Director, Oyo State Fire Service Mr. Isiaka Adeleke said his men raced to the scene of the incident immediately they received the call.

He confirmed that the tanker fell down while its content spilled on the highway, leaving no fewer than six vehicles burnt.

Adeleke said: “We just heard that the tanker fell down and that petrol spilled on the road. The driver of the Micra tried to manoeuvre the vehicle but was unlucky. The man and the woman jumped out of the vehicle, but the fire later caught up with them.”

The incident led to a gridlock on the Iwo road end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Officials of the Oyo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Red Cross were seen removing the remains of the two victims.

At the time of filing this report, officials of the State Fire Service were seen at the scene trying to put off the fire from the tanker. Officers and men of the State Police Command were also on ground to forestall a breakdown of law and order.

When contacted, the command’s Police Public Relation, Olugbenga Fadeyi, a Superintendent, confirmed the incident.

But, Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi yesterday commiserated with the family and loved ones of the victims of the fire incident, describing the incident as depressing.

In a condolence statement by his Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Mr. Bolaji Tunji, the governor said he received the news of the attendant loss of lives and property with grief and sadness.

While the exact cause of the accidents remains sketchy, the governor said he was pained that it consumed lives and gutted houses and vehicles.

Ajimobi said: “I received the depressing news of the unfortunate accident with grief and sadness. I am, especially pained that it led to the loss of lives and property of innocent citizens, who were going about in search of their daily bread.

“I condole with the family and friends of those that died in the accident and I wish those injured speedy recovery. I’m using this opportunity to appeal to vehicle owners to put their vehicles in good condition before hitting the roads during this festive season.

“I also urge motorists to drive carefully and adhere to all safety precautions to avert a recurrence. We should always remember our loved ones and have consideration for other roads users while plying the roads.

“May God grant the soul of our deceased compatriots eternal rest and mitigate the loss of those who lost properties to the accident.”

The Oyo State government has officially taken delivery of 33 Caterpillar Next Generation Excavators from Mantrac Nigeria Limited at a ceremony held at the governor’s office Agodi, Ibadan, the state capital.

The 33 excavators were formally presented to the 33 local government areas by Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

Present at the event was the Deputy Governor, Otumba Moses Adeyemo, top government officials, traditional and religious leaders. A delegation of Mantrac Nigeria Limited, the authorised dealer for Caterpillar Products and Services in Nigeria, led by its Public Sector Manager, Mr. Alex Nwoko was present for the formal hand over.

In his address, Governor Ajimobi said: “The excavators were acquired in order to boost agricultural production, improve rescue operations, urban renewal and for other environmental intervention purposes.”

He recalled that one of the excavators was effectively deployed for rescue operations during a recent building collapse in Ibadan. It helped in rescuing victims from the rubble.

He said: “The latest investment is in addition to the 33 machinery earlier acquired. The earthmovers will be used by the 33 local government areas and the 35 local council development areas (LCDAs).”

He noted that the equipment are of high quality, adding that “we are proud to be associated with you at Mantrac Nigeria, your products and your professionalism. The inauguration of the excavators is another unprecedented feat.”

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Bimbo Kolade said the acquisition of the excavators was not just another first in Oyo State, but in Nigeria.

“There has not been a single government in Nigeria that has, at one time, inaugurated 33 excavators. These are not just excavators but the latest of their kind anywhere in the world. Indeed, this is another first for us. Each excavator comes with full automation, that is, it can be controlled so much so that it can only move within the desired limit,” he said.

The Public Sector Manager, Mantrac Nigeria, Mr. Alex Nwoko described the occasion as “a great honour”

“We are proud to say that this is the highest single investment by any state or Federal Government in road construction in over 20 years. So, we are happy to be part of this partnership.

“As the machines are remotely located, the caterpillar advanced product link technology will ensure their effective monitoring from the state headquarters to help achieve equipment availability. We are committed to offering our support to ensure adequate return on this investment,” he said.

The Chairman Ibadan North West Local Government Area, Bashorun Bosun Ajuwon, on behalf of his colleagues, promised to use the excavators judiciously.

  • Oyo Assembly charges FRSC on modes of operation

The Oyo State House of Assembly on Tuesday charged officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to adopt more tactical and civil approaches in enforcing arrest of erring drivers in their operations.

The charge came following a recent auto crash involving some officials of the Corps and a commercial cab driver which resulted in the death and injury of about five persons in Moniya, Ibadan area of the Oyo state capital city.

The lawmakers also called on the hierarchy of the Road Safety to investigate the incident and prosecute offenders, including their officials involved in the hot chase.

The plenary, presided over by Speaker Olagunju Ojo, reminded the officials of the Corps to “strictly abide by its code of operations which abhorred chasing drivers to death, bearing in mind the need to respect human lives.”

During an ensuring deliberation which followed a motion brought before the House by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Abdulwasi Musah and the Majority Leader, Mr. Kehinde Subair, the lawmakers noted that FRSC rather than chase erring drivers, could simply take note of such number-plates and subsequently arrest drivers of such cars later.

The motion had described as “unwarranted overzealousness” the hot pursuit of the commercial car that refused to stop at a checkpoint manned by FRSC officials around Ojoo which left at least one person dead and three others injured.

Furthermore, the motion urged the FRSC to be more tactful in its operations of minimizing accidents, ensuring that safety measures are observed by road users, including getting their particulars.

In their separate contributions, Mr. Fatai Adesina and Mr. Oyaleke Oyatokun bemoaned that FRSC officials rather than stick to their statutory duties were known for undue harassment and extortion of drivers.

Mr. Gbenga Oyekola said the FRSC officials should be keener on ensuring that drivers have the right vehicle particulars.

Wrapping up the deliberations, the Speaker urged the FRSC to remain diligent in its duties and not dent their image, while also urging the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and other drivers’ unions to prioritise training of their members on the need for them to be up to date with their vehicle particulars and adhere to rules of road usage and traffic signs.

  • Shittu a serial betrayer, dictator, says Oyo APC

The All Progressive Congress, Oyo state chapter has described the Minister of Communication, Mr Adebayo Shittu as a serial betrayal, dictator and failed politician.

The party in reaction to the Ministers remarks that the aggrieved members of the party under the aegis of Unity Forum that joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a fallout of the APC state congress and primaries ahead of the recently concluded general elections, were still members of the APC.

In a statement signed by the state Publicity Secretary, Dr AbdulAzeez Olatunde, the party noted that the Unity Forum led by Shittu and those it described as his co-travellers could not win a mere state parliamentary seat despite leaving the APC with two senators, six federal House of representative members and eight states parliamentarians, an indication of their self over-bloated popularity.

The statement reads “What an interesting ‘vomit’ coming out of a serial betrayal, who betrayed the then Ifedapo LG State Constituency and Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) who gave him life time opportunity, freshly coming out of School, when his colleagues were thinking of National Service before beginning to apply for job, to go and represent them as Member of Oyo State House of Assembly in 1979 to 1983.

“He thereafter ditched UPN in 1983 general election to work for the emergence of NPN Government of Dr Victor Omololu Olunloyo in 1983, for lesser portfolio of state commissioner, a reminiscence of 2019 that he, Barr Adebayo Shittu boasted that he would lead his co-travellers in the Unity Forum to work against the Party, APC that he is benefitting as a serving Minister.

“Of course, we are not surprised about Barr Shittu behaviour because he has only revised his 40 years old betrayal tactics or antics.

“Barrister Adebayo Shittu’s Unity Forum which the whole world knew metamorphosed to Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) is again claiming that they never left APC, because with their four-fold figures of the APC as their membership strength, yet they found it difficult to win just one state parliamentary seat.

Read Also: ICT mainstay of economy, says Shittu

“They left APC with two Senators, Six federal house of representative members and eight state parliamentarians but after 2019 general elections, they ended up with nothing, Unity Forum indeed has four fold strength of Gov Ajimobi led APC.

“Yoruba adage comes in handy, which translate thus that, a farmer who planted 100 heaps of yam but lied to have planted 200, after harvesting the real and authentic 100 will certainly suffer from the 100 unplanted lies of heaps as Barr Shittu and his co-travellers were brought down from their fantasy Island after the 2019 general elections.

“That APC lost the gubernatorial election is an ill-wind that does not profit anyone but the whole world has known the ‘leper-like’ parasites pretentious characters who have overvalued their public image that were using APC to embellish themselves.

“Who should have been referred to as a failed politician than Barr Shittu who had failed to win any election since 40 years ago that was used to sample-test his integrity.

“Again, who is a dictator than Barr Shittu who find it difficult to maintain backroom staffs. Can Barr Shittu tell the whole world why he can’t pay the peanuts he promised Victor Oluwadamilare, Sikiru Olubodun, Sheikh and others?

“It is hoped that Barr Shittu would be so honourable to behave like former Minister Kemi Adeosun and keep his peace but if he wouldn’t, we would be ready for him as long as he chooses not to behave as expected of his status.”
