Egbeda, Ona Ara seek fair representation in Oyo

Residents of Egbeda and Ona-Ara Federal Constituency in Oyo State have appealed to the All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders to intervene in their marginalisation and unfair representation.

The constituency, created in 1989, was promised equitable representation, with the seat alternating between Egbeda and Ona-Ara local governments every eight years. However, Egbeda has been denied its turn for nearly 20 years, with the local government being overlooked in 2018 and 2023.

The aspirant for the 2027 election, Mr. Ashimiu Afeez Adio, who made the appeal, called on the party leadership to ensure a free and fair primary and general election, prevent the imposition of candidates, and uphold fairness and justice in representation.

  • 2027: Tinubu will win Oyo convincingly, Ex-Oyo chief whip slams Makinde

2027: Tinubu will win Oyo convincingly, Ex-Oyo chief whip slams Makinde

A former Chief Whip of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Abiodun Adigun-Hammed, has predicted a landslide victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Oyo State in the 2027 elections.

Adigun-Hammed described as “unthinkable” the idea that President Tinubu would entrust the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State to Governor Seyi Makinde.

His comments came in reaction to statements attributed to Makinde during a media chat on Tuesday, in which the governor allegedly claimed that former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike offered to deliver Oyo State to Tinubu—a proposal Makinde purportedly declined.

In a statement, Adigun-Hammed dismissed Makinde’s claim as false, asserting that the governor could not be trusted with any political arrangement. He cited Makinde’s alleged betrayals of former governor and Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin, Senator Sarafadeen Alli, and other political stakeholders who supported him in 2019, warning that such behavior could extend to anyone.

The former lawmaker also raised questions about a contract Makinde said he was awarded in 1997, reportedly valued at $1 million, urging Nigerians to seek clarity on its execution.

Adigun-Hammed further claimed that the APC was gaining momentum in Oyo State, arguing that residents were beginning to see through what he called Makinde’s “pretence and political games.”

“Makinde has proved to be a serial liar and pretender. How can his ally ask President Tinubu to give Oyo State to ‘arrange’ for us, when we have three senators, nine House of Representatives members, three former deputy governors, ex-ministers, and experienced politicians? Such a claim is a lie from the pit of hell,” he said.

He also accused Makinde of failing to acknowledge the support he received from the President and other stakeholders during his re-election bid in 2023, instead repaying them with falsehoods.

Looking ahead to 2027, Adigun-Hammed expressed full confidence that President Tinubu would defeat Governor Makinde—and any candidate Makinde supports—predicting a decisive victory for the APC in Oyo State.

  • Let your voices be heard, Makinde charges Nigerians to rise for true federalism

Let your voices be heard, Makinde charges Nigerians to rise for true federalism

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state, has called on Nigerians to speak up in defence of true federalism, noting that the founding fathers, who negotiated Nigeria to be a federal system had foresight and that Nigerians should not allow the system to be derailed.

He stated this on Friday, at Re-Meritona Hotel, Abakaliki, venue of a birthday party and the public presentation of a book entitled ‘The Seyi Makinde Story: A Testament to Vision, Courage and Leadership’ authored by Ali Odefa.

Governor Makinde said he would consider it his biggest 58th birthday gift if Nigerians, especially the South-East, could speak up for true federalism and make sure their voices are heard.

According to the governor, the South-East must emulate Chief Ogbonnaya Onu, whose singular act of relinquishing the All People’s Party (APP) presidential ticket in 1999 changed the political landscape by ensuring that they contribute towards making the political environment competitive ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Governor Makinde, who noted that he chose to join politics years back to ensure that his voice is heard, said Nigerians can no longer afford to be bystanders, adding that they must make up their minds to participate in politics and ensure their voices are heard with regards to true federalism.

He said, “Well, let me start by saying compliments of the season to all of us, and to wish us a Merry Christmas and a happy, joyous, and rewarding year 2026 ahead of us.

“I want to say thank you for arranging this. When they brought the kolanut, they said I should accept it. And Ali whispered to me that this kolanut understands only one language, and that is Igbo language. And I tried to think in my head, you know, what language would I speak to this kola? But eventually, I spoke in Igbo.

“Kolanuts are actually grown in the western part of the country. But the people that eat kolanuts the most are in the northern part of the country. And that brings me to my only message for today.

“Nigeria was negotiated as a federation. The people that negotiated that federation called it Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is because of something like this. If you go to the North, you go to the West, you go to the East, different cultures, in fact, different nations. And they thought, okay, so how do you have unity in that diversity? And they negotiated federalism. And that is the most important issue that we are faced with as a country today.

“I’ll be 58 in about six days’ time. It would be a great birthday gift for me if quietly we make up our minds to participate and let our voices be heard in calling for true federalism for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“I am in Igboland. You have shown love to me in this state and throughout Igboland, every time I go out, I am always dumbfounded with the kind of reception that I receive in the South-East.

“You have demonstrated that we can actually have that handshake across the Niger. My brother, former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, sent a representative. It is an indication of friendship and it is also an indication that the handshake is in the process of germinating and growing to an iroko status.”

Governor Makinde, who used the occasion to commend the Igbo people for the roles they have played in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy, pointed out how Chief Ogbonnaya Onu’s decision to let go of his presidential ticket in APP changed the political narrative in 1999, saying that the South-East must also ensure that the political environment becomes competitive ahead of the 2027 general election.

“At every turning point in Nigeria’s history, we have had the imprints of Igbo people. Cast your mind back at every point. I can only just go back to the recent turning points, because the democracy we are enjoying today started in 1999.

“In 1999, we were going to have a one-sided election because all the generals were on one side. The elite were all on one side. A single individual had drafted the constitution of all the three political parties. That was the environment we were in at that point. And there came a proud Igbo man, by the name of Ogbonnaya Onu, former governor of Abia State.

“He did something that made the political environment at that time become competitive. He gave up his presidential ticket. He was the presidential candidate of APP. He gave up that ticket so that there could be an alliance between APP and AD. They came together and they created a competitive political environment. Once he did that, nobody could predict the outcome of that 1999 election. The election actually went down to the wire.

“So, I am calling on my brothers and sisters, on this occasion of my 58th birthday, that you play the same role. Make our political environment competitive. I am not talking about A, B, C, D or E. No, I am talking about the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is God that gives power.

“As humans, we may have ambitions, we may aspire, but God’s will always override individual’s will. So, my message is Igboland and Igbo people have a role to play to nudge Nigeria towards the path of true federalism. So, that is what I am going to leave you with.

“People have been talking about 2027, but we have one calendar year, 2026, ahead of us. Let us do our part, play our role.

“For me, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for the reception that I have received here.”

In her speech, the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Princess Patricia Onyemaechi Obila, said her boss asked her and other top government officials to attend to celebrate Governor Makinde on the occasion of his birthday and the book authored by an Ebonyi man.

She noted that the book on Governor Makinde contained a lot of experiences, adding that Makinde has a lot of admirers because he has been doing well in governance, especially in the areas of infrastructure development, education and other areas.

“You have many admirers out there because of the good jobs you are doing in Oyo State. In terms of infrastructure development, you are doing well. In terms of education and health, you are doing well.

“You are part of the governors we pray for everyday. If 80 per cent of governors are like you, Nigeria will be a better place. I always associate you with my boss, His Excellency, Rt Hon Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, who remains the best governor in this country.

“Today, we congratulate you and thank God for your life, because you have weathered a lot of storms, got a lot of experiences but you came, you saw, you touched and you conquered.

“So, on behalf of my boss, we say big congratulations to you.”

Earlier, the author of the book, Odefa said the book is, indeed a testament to the vision and courage of Governor Makinde, a man who has redefined leadership in the country.

He added that he authored the book as a mark of his appreciation to the Oyo State Governor and to immortalise him, just as he hailed his wife, Engr Mrs Tamunominini Makinde, for all she has done for him and his household.

The event had in attendance Wife of the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Mrs Makinde; Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Princess Patricia Onyemaechi Obila; Enugu State Deputy Governor, Barr Ifeanyi Ossai; Wife of a former Governor of Ebonyi State, Mrs Eunice Ukamaka Egwu; wife of the author, Chief (Mrs) Onyinyechi Ali Odefa; and Member representing Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency, Hon. Abass Adigun (Agboworin), among others.

We’ll continue to strengthen security architecture, secure Oyo – Makinde

…commissions Police Area Command rebuilt by Akinyele LG

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state has reiterated that his administration will continue to strengthen the security architecture of the state in order to secure the lives and properties of residents.

The governor, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, stated this on Friday, at the commissioning of the Moniya Area Command Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force, which was reconstructed by Akinyele Local Government.

The governor also commissioned two motorised boreholes situated at the Rehabilitation Centre for the Physically Challenged in Isabiyi Ward 6 and Akuro Community, Olorisaoko, Ward 11.

The governor maintained that the construction of the new Area Command of the Nigeria Police in Moniya is part of the commitment of the government to securing lives and properties in the state.

He said that the government remains ready to proactively combat security challenges.

Governor Makinde highlighted that Moniya and, indeed, Akinyele Local Government, is rapidly becoming a centre of attraction with massive urban expansion due to several vast infrastructure development projects of the state government, including the ongoing Circular Road, the Ilutuntun Business District and the Dry Port, among others.

He noted that these projects have and will continue to attract more people to the council and that the government must expand its capacity to secure the people, a development he noted was demonstrated by the construction of the Police Area Command Headquarters in Moniya.

While stating the strategic importance of the project, the governor added that the infrastructure development has projected Akinyele Local Government economically, noting that it requires robust security to ensure both public safety and a stable environment for investment.

He said: “This project has a lot of facilities in it, which will help the officers to perform their duties effectively. This also comes with a borehole and I want to commend the local government chairman for it.

“As a community, I want to urge us to say something when we see anything strange. In Oyo State, we have decided to really confront insecurity head on. Most of the needs of the security agencies are being met regularly to the extent that if you see any car carrying the logo of the Nigeria Police Force, just know the state government donated it.

“I attend the NEC meeting on a monthly basis and I keep interrogating at the higher level in Abuja; look, you say it is the Nigeria Police Force but go to the states, in terms of equipment, mobility, the only thing states do not do is to buy arms and ammunition.

“The rest of the responsibilities are being done by the state governments and we will continue to do this in Oyo State. This is because we are appreciative of what the Police Force is doing for us in terms of security.

“For this Area Command, if there are things that must be put in place beyond the ability of the local government, please escalate it to the state government.

“The contract for the road in front of this place has been awarded and they have started working on it, and it would be completed in due course.

“In the whole of Southwest, Oyo State stands as the safest; we have the statistics and records, and we are proud of the status in South-West Nigeria.”

Earlier in his welcome address, the chairman, Akinyele Local Government, Akinwole Akinleye, said the Area Command of the Nigeria Police Force in Moniya is meant to reposition the command to secure borders and safeguard the people of the state in the face of mounting insecurity in the country.

He added that the newly built area command has facilities that will enable policemen to effectively perform the task of tackling security issues associated with urbanisation as represented by the opening up of Ilu-Tuntun Business District and the ongoing Circular Road Project in Akinyele Local Government.

While commending Governor Makinde for strengthening the security architecture of the state, he assured the people of the state of more dividends of democracy.

Also in his remarks, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Femi Haruna, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Isiaka Salahudeen, urged the residents of the state to cooperate with the government by providing useful information to the security agencies to tackle insecurity and other social vices in their communities, adding that securing the state is a responsibility for all.

He assured of the police’s readiness to work with other security agencies to support the government to progress and achieve good results.

In their separate goodwill messages, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Segun Olayiwola; the Chairman of Local Government Chairmen in Oyo State, Sikiru Sanda and an elder statesman, Engr Julius Akinsola, lauded Governor Makinde’s initiatives on security.

They equally commended Akinleye for complementing the efforts of the government through the projects.

They charged the Police Force and the people of Akinyele Local Government to utilise and maintain the projects to reduce the menace of insecurity in the state.

  • Oyo approves N3bn for Cocoa rejuvenation

Oyo approves N3bn for Cocoa rejuvenation

Oyo State government on Tuesday expressed its commitment and readiness to restore the glory of cocoa production as one of the state’s major economic pillars.

To this effect, the government said it has approved a total of N3,030,292,472 for the establishment of Cocoa Rejuvenation Project to be driven through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

The project is to be coordinated by the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA) and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, said the approval was given at the State Executive Council meeting which held on Tuesday.

The Commissioner explained that the state government is taking this initiative because Oyo State ranks fourth in cocoa production among the 18 cocoa-producing states in Nigeria.

He said, “The state is also being proactive by seizing the opportunity created by disruptions in cocoa production in major producing countries like Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

“It is the intention of Oyo State to fill the supply void as a result of the production problems facing the West African countries.

“The Cocoa Rejuvenation Project, which costs two million, seventy-five thousand, five hundred and forty-seven dollars ($2,075,547), will be funded in three tranches over the next three years.”

The Commissioner added that the Council also backed the call by Southwest governors on their call for State Police and observed that the lack of enthusiasm by the youths to join the military makes the domestication of local policing more urgent.

“The Council lauded the foresight of Governor Seyi Makinde to procure two surveillance aircrafts for the state security apparatus to track and monitor movements in dangerous areas and the continued support for Amotekun that has made it the best staffed and equipped in the Southwest.

“Additionally, the Council approved €50 million for the Oyo State Health Care Initiative. This loan from the French Government, which Oyo State initiated about three years ago, was finally approved by the Federal Ministry of Finance in a letter dated November 10, 2025.”

Oyelade explained that the loan, intended for infrastructural upgrades and equipping state hospitals, among other purposes, has also been approved by the State House of Assembly to enable the state government to access the funds.

He added that the Oyo State Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Policy was also approved by the council.

The approval according to him will unlock financial opportunities and allow the state to access funds from the Federal Government, the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and other international partners.

He added that the objective of the fund is to eliminate open defecation, achieve universal access to safely managed sanitation, and integrate hygiene promotion into communities.

The Commissioner said that the Council at its meeting also approved the establishment of the Oyo State Climate Action Plans and Policies, which will allow for the engagement of a Green Energy Agency.

He said that the approval authorizes the engagement of a Green Energy Agency to implement the policies, backed by a N270million guarantee from a reputable bank.

The Council further approved the Business Enabling Reforms Action Plan for 2026, a mandatory requirement for state participation in the State Action on Business Enabling Reforms (SABER), adding that the sum.of N400million was also approved to meet the eligibility criteria.
