    Oyo council worker bags jail term as OYACA warns against corruption

    The Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYACA) announced on Thursday, August 15, the conviction of Adesina Olanrewaju Oyegoke, a local government worker, for the illegal sale of land owned by the State Housing Corporation.

    Ibrahim Tijani, the Agency’s Executive Secretary, released a statement on behalf of the chairman, Justice Eni Esan (rtd.), urging civil servants to avoid corrupt practices.

    Oyegoke, an Assistant Chief Executive Officer in the Estate Department of Lagelu Local Government, Ibadan, was convicted on three counts of official corruption under the OYACA Law 2019.

    Magistrate O.A. Akande, presiding over Special Court 8 in Iyaganku, delivered the judgment on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, sentencing Oyegoke to three months in prison for each count.

    “OYACA uses this medium to warn civil servants to desist from all acts of corruption, as it only plunges the state into underdevelopment and disparages the good image and enviable status of the Oyo state government,” Eni Esan stated.

    JUST IN: Oyo sets new dates for teachers’ recruitment interview 

    The Oyo State government, through the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), has announced adjustments to its interview timetable for teachers’ recruitment.

    The interview session initially scheduled for Tuesday, August 20, was rescheduled for August 26, to avoid a clash with Isese Day, a public holiday in Oyo state.

    The Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Nureni Adeniran, in a swift response to the cultural date rescheduled the interview date to Monday, August 26, 2024.

    In an official statement released on Tuesday, Adeniran emphasised the importance of respecting cultural practices and ensuring that all candidates have equal opportunities to participate in the final stage of the recruitment process.

    “In light of this observation, the affected LGAs whose interviews were originally slated for Tuesday, August 20, 2024, have been rescheduled to Monday, August 26, 2024,” Adeniran stated.

    Philantropist gets Oyo community chieftaincy title

    Oke-Amu town in Ifelodun Local Government of Oyo State came alive recently when a popular Muslim,  Alhaji Chief Adewale Mukaila Oseni, was installed the Asiwaju.

    The  title, bestowed upon him by Oba Kasali Oyeniyi Omotoso, the Olugunwa of Oke-Amu Land, marks a significant recognition of his selfless service and dedication to the community.

     The  ceremony commemorated the 33-year reign of Oba Kasali Oyeniyi Omotoso on the throne.

     The event attracted a host of distinguished guests from across The country and beyond, with many joining the celebration via live stream from the diaspora.

     The installation of Oseni was a major highlight of the occasion, reflecting his outstanding contributions to the growth and development of Oke-Amu and its surrounding areas.

    These royal fathers, along with other notable figures, added to the grandeur of the event, underscoring the significance of Alhaji Oseni’s installation.

    Oseni, who previously held the title of Bobagunwa of Ipapo, has  been a pillar of philanthropy in the community

     His commitment to giving back was evident in the two-day medical outreach organised before the chieftaincy .

     The outreach, funded by  Oseni, provided free medical checks, consultations, and medications to residents, showcasing his unwavering dedication to the health and well-being of his people.

     The Asiwaju title is a fitting recognition of Alhaji Oseni’s extensive contributions to the community.

    Foundation uplifts widows, aged, vulnerable in Oyo

    A charity organisation, ‘Compassion Heights Global Foundation’ has put smiles on faces of over 100 aged and widows in Eruwa, Ibarapa East Local Government Area of Oyo State to cushion effect of hunger being witnessed by many Nigerians.

    The event attracted vulnerable individuals drawn from various communities in the local government area.

    Speaking with newsmen at the event, the initiator of the programme, Prince Adewale Oke, said motive behind the gesture was to provide support and relief to the elderly widows who are facing brunt of the ongoing economic challenges in the country.

    According to the Eruwa-born Prince, concerns for plight of the less privileged, especially aged and widows in the community compelled the foundation to offered the assistance.

    He said: “As a charitable organisation, we felt compelled to step in and offer them some assistance to ease their burdens during these difficult times.

    “As a native of Eruwa, I have witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by the elderly widows in our community. Many of them are living in dire conditions, with limited access to basic necessities like food, shelter, and healthcare. 

    “We felt that it was our responsibility as a charitable organization to step in and provide them with some much-needed relief.

    “Our goal with this initiative is not only to alleviate their immediate needs but also to inspire others in the community to lend a helping hand. We believe that by working together, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of the less privileged in Eruwa and beyond.”

    To achieve strategic implementation of a blueprint for social and economic development of the land, Ogbomoso sons and daughters in North America will host Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandhi Olaoye, at a general convention scheduled to take place in Atlanta from July 26-27.

    The President, Ogbomoso Sons and Daughters in North America, Omo Oba Mathew Oladele, said the convention aimed to use the platform to contribute to the development of the town.

    Oyo boxers grab three gold at Lagos Hall of Fame  tourney 

    Three boxing athletes from Oyo State has secured three gold medals at the just concluded Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame tournament.

    The tournament, held at Landmark Hall, Lagos State was organised by the Global Association for Mixed Martial Arts (GAMMA).

    The trio of Odebode Opeyemi, Abeeb Kazeem, and Taofikat Adepoju clinched gold medals each at different categories.

    The six-day tournament, which involved the six south western states of Nigeria,  featured four weight categories including 48kg, 60kg and 85kg.

    The fourth athlete that participated from Oyo State, Ramoni Folarin sustained injury by solar pole which prevented him from partaking in the tournament till the end.

    Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Oyo State, Wasilat Adegoke, commended the athletes for their outstanding and unique performances, urging the athletes not to relent in their efforts to achieve greater heights in the nearest future.

    She however called on all under 15 athletes in the State to prepare adequately and train vigorously in order to record exceptional performance in the forthcoming National Youth Games scheduled to hold in Asaba, Delta State.

    Oyo opens job portal for 7,000 primary school teachers

    Oyo state government said the job portal for public primary school teachers in the state has been opened on Tuesday, June 25.

    The chairman of Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Nureni Adeniran disclosed this in a statement.

    Adeniran said the opening is part of the Oyo state government’s bid to reduce unemployment among its citizenry.

    The portal, according to him would register, each candidate with his/her email, phone number, and National Identification Number (NIN), among other requirements, to provide them jobs suitable for them, either as teachers or caregivers.

    Adeniran gave the site address as subeb.jobportal.oyostate.gov.ng for the recruitment of 7,000 teachers and 100 caregivers.

    According to him, the application will be on for the next three weeks, from June 25, 2024-July 9, 2024.

    He said: “The government of Oyo state wants to expand the job space in the basic education sub-sector and those who are interested in working as caregivers.

    “Education is a major pillar of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration. We are going to have an inclusive government that will utilize valuable potentials that abound in the State and that’s why we are employing new primary school teachers.

    “Applicants can channel their complaints, or challenges encountered in the process of the online application, through the support service, to the phone number and email provided on the website for free support services.”

    He advised applicants to upload necessary documents, adding that the recruitment will be transparent, fair, credible, and based on merit.

    Dr. Adeniran said the application will involve three processes, including online application; CBT examination; and Oral interview.

    The SUBEB boss advised applicants to be wary of scammers, adding that the only portal for the job application is the one provided above.

    He equally said the application process from beginning to end is free of charge, adding that no person, either staff or non-staff is assigned to collect money from any applicant.

    Oyo yet to record cholera case, rolls out measures

    Oyo State on Saturday said there is no record of cases of Cholera anywhere yet within its shores. 

    Oyo Epidemiologist, Dr Iyabo Kareem when contacted by The Nation said although there were seven suspected reported cases, the sample taken to the laboratory for test has confirmed that five of the results released so far are negative.

    She added that, although the state still awaits the remaining two results, efforts have been put in place to ensure that suspected cases of acute vomiting, diarrhoea and or stooling are promptly reported.

    She said, the Ministry of Health in conjunction with lone ministries, partners and collaborators have heightened sensitisation and awareness across the state so that suspected cases are promptly reported.

    Explaining the measures put in place by the state, she said the Infectious Disease Centre (IDC), Olodo has been reactivated and put on high alert, noting that suspected cases are been moved there while also assuring that possible cases will also be treated there.

    Kareem said: “What we have recently is suspected cases of cholera. We had seven suspected cases. We have received laboratory report of five persons which came out negative. 

    “We have yet to get two results as I speak with you. There is no confirmed case of cholera in Oyo state as I speak with you.

    “However, we are mindful that since the case has been reported in Lagos and Ogun state and due to the proximity of Oyo to the two states that have recorded the case and because of movement of people from the two states, we are putting up serious measures to enaure it didn’t come up here.

    “Oyo state is not relaxing and we are strengthening our detection system. We have strengthen strong surveillance and reporting system. We are sensitising health workers to know case definition and identification.

    “In the communities, we are sensitising our people to report acute diarrhoea and vomiting. We have at least ten community voluteers across all the 351 wards of the state who are helping us monitor and survey the neighbourhood. 

    “Even before cases were reported in Lagos and Ogun state, we have trained our Rapid Response Officers on surveillance. 

    “To aid testing in our laboratories, we have position our consumables, testing materials to various labs so that we can test any sample taken to them as fast and quick as possible.”

    She added: “In prevention and control, we have also made provisions for our health officers so that they don’t fall victim during the course of duty.

    “On risk communication, we have distributed Information, Education, Communication (IEC) materials to sensitise and educate members of the communities and people in the rural areas. 

    “We have also rolled out jingles on cholera both in English and Yoruba languages in the media and even social media to sensitise people on how to avoid cholera as well as where to report suspected cases.

    “We have also told people about sanitation because cholera is prone in dirty environment and areas where hygiene is not taken seriously.

    “We are encouraging people to take care of their personal health, environment and hygiene. We are telling them how to protect their food, how to get clean water and how to ensure their food is well cooked. We are also encouraging them yo wash their fruits well on their own before eating.

    “We are also discouraging people from taking prepared drinks such as locally made kunu, tiger nut, zoo, pito among others that the source of water for preparing them are not certain.

    “We are telling them that they must ensure that they patronise only approved food vendors. 

    “On the children, we are telling them that it is food that they pack their foods for them to school and not ask them to eat out.

    “We have reactivated the Infectious Disease Centre, Olodo where suspected cases are managed and when there is any confirmation, we will also treat them there.

    “We are working with other line ministries including Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Water Resources, Oyo RUWASSA, World Health Organisation,  UNICEF, and other partners.”

    The Igbo Traditional leader, Onyendu Ndigbo, High Chief Alloy Obi, has begged for collaboration of stakeholders in Oyo State after the Court of Appeal resolved the 28-year-old leadership crisis.

    The leadership tussle, which started 28 years ago, was between the late Chief Alex Anozie and Chief Obi.

    The Court of Appeal judgement of the lower court affirming Obi as the traditional leader of Igbo in Oyo State.

    Obi, while addressing newsmen on Thursday in Ibadan, said all issues relating to the Igbo leadership tussle in Oyo State have been put to an end with the judgement.

    Obi said his victory was not just for him but for all Igbo residents in Ibadan and Oyo State.

    According to him, his agenda was to bring together and unite Igbos in the State, affirming his commitment toward the peace and progress of all Igbos across the state.

    He said: “Going down memory lane, the case started 28 years ago, exactly May 17th 1996 when I joined. Despite my stand against injustice, I tried everything possible to avoid crisis but those who thought that they would benefit from it refused to heed the intervention spearheaded by Chief Onyemaizu result of the 15 member committee set up by Late Col lke Nwosu.

    “Also there were various interventions initiated most especially by the leadership of the South East Council of Traditional Rulers in conjunction with the Ohanaeze Worldwide but all these were all rebuffed.

    “Today the ruling of the Court of Appeal has fully restored the authority of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and South East Council of Traditional Rulers as parent bodies to regulate the activities of Ndigbo and Igbo Organisation Worldwide.

    “I hereby use this medium to call on those who are still in opposition to sheath their sword for it is time for enduring peace and togetherness among Ndigbo in Oyo State.

    “I promise to be a good and impartial father to Ndigbo and lgbo groups in Oyo State.

    “It is a thing of joy for me that throughout the 28years the crisis lasted, no life was lost to it as those who died, died natural death.

    “I also call on the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Oyo State to put to a sovereign lgbo conference in Oyo State to chat a road map and blueprint for a true unity and progress of Ndigbo in Oyo State.

    “On my part, I would work with the leadership of Ohanaeze in the state to put in place a committee that would see to the reconciliation of all parties in the overall interest of the Igbos in Ibadanland and Oyo State in general.”

    Oyo issues alert over suspected cholera cases

    The Oyo State Government has issued a health alert following suspected cholera cases in the State. 

    The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi emphasised the need for heightened vigilance and precautionary measures to prevent a potential cholera outbreak.

    During her visit to a private hospital in Ibadan where two suspected cholera cases were under treatment, Dr. Oluwaserimi highlighted cholera as a highly infectious bacterial infection transmitted through contaminated food or water. 

    She listed the symptoms as severe, acute watery diarrhea, dehydration, nausea, vomiting, and fever.

    The Commissioner identified the suspected cases in Ibadan as male workers from Lagos State, linked to a construction site in Lekki Peninsula.

    She assured the public that the Ministry, in collaboration with partners, is actively managing the situation to prevent casualties.

    Oluwaserimi outlined response efforts, including the deployment of local government Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers (DSNO), media campaigns in English and Yoruba, activation of isolation facilities, intensified surveillance, and community sensitisation.

    She urged the public to drink water from safe sources, practice proper hand hygiene and seek immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms.
