  • Oyo APC petitions INEC over Ajimobi’s defeat

The Oyo State Chapter of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) has petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission over what it described as anomalies that led to the defeat of the Governor Abiola Ajimobi in his bid to return to the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly.

A petition attached with a police report has been delivered to the registry department of the electoral umpire.

The document was delivered by the Oyo State APC Director of Research and Strategy, Dr Azeez Olatunde at about 12:30, Monday.

According to sources, the document had earlier been brought to the commission’s office on Sunday when the party got winds of some anomalies in some voting areas in the district but was not collected and told to be represented on Monday.

Olatunde who was upbeat about the result noted his party did not lose the election but robbed of victory as political thugs were uses to unleashed mayhem on party supporters in some parts of the state which led to the death of a young boy.

Dr Kola Balogun of the PDP was declared winner by the returning officer, Professor Wole Akinsola after polling 105,720 votes while Ajimobi (APC), incumbent Senator Adesoji Akanbi and Dr Fola Akinosun (ADP), polled; 92, 218; 49, 437; and 13, 149 respectively.

  • I’m not in any alliance against Adelabu- Akala

The governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala, has cleared the air on the plot by opposition candidates to form an alliance against their All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart Adebayo Adelabu.

Alao-Akala, who is a former governor of the state, said he was not working with the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or any other in any form of alliance as being reported in the media.

Speaking through his campaign organisation on Wednesday, the ADP candidate said the reports were aimed at “misinforming and confusing our teaming supporters world over.”

Director General of the campaign organisation, Chief Wale Ohu, said: “At a time, the rumor in town was that he was not serious about his governorship ambition and that he was going to play the role of a spoiler or work for another governorship candidate.

Read Also: I’ll respect gender balance as Governor, says Adelabu

“The most recent is that he is working for the PDP governorship candidate, Engineer Seyi Makinde.

“The Akala Campaign Organization hereby debunks all these insinuations which is the handiwork of the Propaganda machinery of the government in power in Oyo state which is jittery and overwhelmed by the soaring popularity of Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala and to state clearly that the former Governor is committed to taking the people of Oyo State out of the political mess they have been plunged into by the insensitive A. P. C government of Sen. Ajimobi since he left office eight years ago.

“Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala has toured the nooks and crannies of Oyo State, taking the message of hope to the citizenry which was received with enthusiasm by the people.

“His Excellency, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala is not into any discussion, alliance or talks with the PDP governorship candidate Engr. Seyi Makinde or any other for that matter.

“That is like the elephant hiding behind a rat when in the real sense. It is the rat that needs the cover of the elephant.

“It is not in doubt that Akala is a political giant who cannot and would never hide under any candidate or politician in the state.

“Rather, it is expected that, considering Akala’s experience and achievements, other young candidates should come together to support and rally Alao Akala so as to restore the State’s pacesetter position in the Committee of States.”

He added: “What is the sensibility behind Alao-Akala dissipating his energy and financial resources over the governorship election if it is for any other motive other than to govern Oyo State again?

“If it is prominence, Otunba Alao-Akalahe has it. If it is wealth, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala is comfortable for the rest of his life so rather, his pursuit is for the emancipation of Oyo State people.

“The Akala Campaign Organisation thereby reiterates that His Excellency, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala is not advancing the cause of the PDP candidate, Engineer Makinde or any other political party or candidate and consequently advises cheap rumor peddlers who want to profit from Alao-Akala’s large image to desist from cheap gossips and get more involved in issues that can move Oyo State forward.”

  • INEC retrieves election materials from Jigawa, Imo, Oyo, others

•As Lamido, Ohakim, Ladoja, others condemn postponement

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has retrieved sensitive materials distributed in states like Jigawa, Imo, following yesterday’s postponement of the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The Administrative Secretary of Jigawa State INEC, Malam Ahmed Ado Danaji, confirmed the move while fielding questions from newsmen in the commission’s office in Dutse, the state capital.

Malam Ahmed Ado Danaji explained that “immediately after the decision, we were directed to retrieve back all the elections material which already arrived some local government areas headquarters. We safely retrieved back it all and they are now in our (INEC) custody, well secured.”

According to him “at the time the elections were postponed, our materials have arrived six local government areas such as Kiyawa and Taura. We used the heavy security to return them.”

He added that “we (INEC) will keep all the materials in our custody; we will not return them back to the Central Bank where it was kept”.

Also speaking, the former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, expressed disappointment over the postponement, which he described as indication of total failure.

All Progressive Congress (APC) Chieftain in Jigawa State, Hon. Faruk Adamu Aliyu, said the election postponement will not in any way affect the APC chances of overwhelming victory.

Also, the senatorial candidate for Jigawa Central of Jigawa State, Mustaph Sule Lamido, condemned the INEC action, describing it as a demonstration of high level of incompetency of the INEC chairman.

In Imo State, INEC’s office yesterday said it has commenced the retrieval of sensitive materials already deployed to local government areas for the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof Francis Ezeonu, said the sensitive materials will be retrieved and returned to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for safekeeping, while awaiting further instructions.

Meanwhile, anger and disappointment have continued to trail the postponement of the election in the state.

Electorates, who had travelled long distance to the respective places where they are registered to vote, expressed dismay over the timing of the postponement by INEC.

When our Correspondent visited one of the Polling Units in Owerri, a handful of voters were seen waiting for the arrival of INEC officials.

One of the aggrieved voters, Mazi Chuks Ofulum, lampooned INEC for toying with the nation’s democracy.

Also expressing disappointment over the postponement, former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, stated that “postponement does not go down well with any patriotic and right thinking citizen of this country.”

Ohakim, who is also the governorship candidate of the Accord Party, advised INEC to take steps to ensure that there won’t be further postponements.

Also in Oyo, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Mutiu Agboke, yesterday confirmed that sensitive election materials earlier distributed across some local governments of the state have been retrieved and lodged at the Agodi, Ibadan headquarters of the commission for safekeeping.

According to Agboke, the commission decided to warehouse the materials at the headquarters office owing to the huge volumes of other materials yet to be sorted or distributed at the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dugbe, Ibadan office.

He added however that the security of the office has been beefed up with security operatives including police, army, civil defence and state security while anti-bomb vehicles, patrol vehicles and surveillance dogs are seen within and outside the premises of the commission.

But mixed reactions have however trailed the postponement of the polls, as a former governor of the state, Senator Rashidi Ladoja called for the probe of the decision after the entire INEC leadership might have been sacked due to what he described as their incompetence in handling electoral matters.

Agboke who noted that just like every other Nigerian and observers, the management of the Commission also felt bad about the need for the postponement, however said it should not translate to apathy of voters on the newly stated date.

“We have started the distribution of our sensitive materials and in fact, some of them have been deployed to the local governments but along the line, we got the news of the postponement by one week.

“Immediately, we retrieved all the materials back. We retrieved them back in the presence of the police.

“What we did was that the retrieval was to the state office because we still have large volumes of cartons of ballot papers at the CBN office, so we are trying to decongest the CBN. What we have done is that those we have sorted out, we are taking their custody here in our Agodi head office and we are fortifying the security around here.

“The Commissioner of Police was here earlier in the day and more policemen have been deployed. The General Officer Commanding (GOC) had been contacted and men of the Nigerian Army have been stationed here. NSCDC personnel are also here. Even at the CBN, more personnel have been deployed to fortify the place for us. I want to assure the people of Oyo State that nothing has happened to any of our sensitive materials. They are intact,” he said.

But Senator Ladoja who was visibly angry at the postponement described it as a sad development which shows the incompetence of INEC leadership.

He said “If you cannot even conduct an election, and you are talking about democracy, what democracy is that? People will read a lot of meanings into it. I want to repeat that it is due to the incompetence of the people that are there, he said.

The Minister gave the admonition on Friday in Ogbomosho, Oyo state at a funeral service of Late Dr Abidoye Ayoola, a foremost Nigerian Engineer in Oil and Gas.

Reacting to question on spate of “get rich quick syndrome, cultism and ritual” among Nigerian youths, the minister told newsmen that “every enduring success must be painstaking”.

He said the youths must take a cue from Ayoola who attained the peak of his career on account of “hard work, tenacity, unusual professionalism and high integrity”.

The minister noted that Nigeria is full of opportunities which are open to those who can be painstaking and assiduous in what they do.

  • EFCC, ICPC should investigate 2016 audit report – CSO

A civic organization, Paradigm Leadership Support Initiative (PLSI) on Wednesday called on the anti-graft agencies the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission to investigate the 2016 Audit Report.

The organization stated that N2.97 billion meant for 30 critical projects in the country was unaccounted for as stated in the report.

Executive Director of PLSI, Olusegun Elemo, stated these at the launch of its Independent Findings of priority projects captured in the 2016 audit report.

Elomo stated that the organization monitored 19 priority projects in 12 states captured under the report this year and found out that most of them have been abandoned.

According to him, ten out of the projects have been abandoned even when monies have been paid for them.

He noted that only one out of the 19 projects had been completed when PLSI visited the states this month.

The monitored states by PLSI include; Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Lagos, Ogun, Kano, Kogi, Kwara, Adamawa, Imo and Enugu.

Some of the abandoned projects include; construction of mini-water scheme phase two, contract for the construction of small earth dam, rehabilitation of two-township water supply schemes, improvement of Olode water supply scheme under the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority.

Others are construction of Weru bridge fencing of Okene water works among others which was supposed to be implemented by the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority.

Projects abandoned under the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing include the rehabilitation of Ikorodu road with about N112.8million unaccounted for, also the rehabilitation of 24km Akungba-Ikare-Omuo-Kabba road among others.

Elomo said: “We visited 12 states over the last six months and monitored 19 out of the 30 priority projects highlighted in this report. While one of the projects had been completed, two were not executed, 10 abandoned, three poorly implemented, another two currently ongoing and one now provided for in the 2018 Appropriation Act.

“The major issue for us is how procurement laws and financial regulations are flagrantly disregarded at the risk of public funds and the negative effect on Nigerians, many of which are in rural areas in terms of access to clean portable water, access roads, quality health facilities.

“A total of N2.97 billion is said to be unaccounted for by different contractors on these 30 projects and we are calling on the anti-corruption agencies to quickly investigate these cases in order to ensure deserved value for money is achieved.”

Also, Project Director, TrustAfrica, Chinedu Nwagu, called on the National Assembly to carry out a review of the 2016 report.

He said it is only when a review of the report is done and recommendations forwarded to the Executive arm of government that the anomalies found in the report could be corrected.

Nwagu said: “There is need for the National Assembly to do the needful by ensuring extensive review of the 2016 audit report of the federation. It is only when this is done and recommendations forwarded to the Executive Arm that these anomalies can be corrected.

“Parliament should equally make effort in sending the new Audit Service Commission Bill 2018 to the president for assent. The new law will go a long way in preventing such illegality from occurring again,” he said.

  • Oyo workers shun NLC/TUC directive, attend prayer programme

Despite the decision of labour leaders under the aegis of Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, Oyo state councils, workers under the employ of the Oyo state government on Monday in their hundreds attended the Annual Interreligious service organised by the government to officially begin the working calendar year.

The labour leaders while responding to an earlier invitation sent to it by the organisers, noted that it resolved at an emergency meeting convened to discuss the matter to boycott the event.

The letter dated January 11, 2019, and signed by Comrades Kofo Ogundeji and Mayowa Falegbe, NLC and TUC state secretaries respectively also added that members have been “directed to continue with their daily communion with their creator.”

But the event was not only well attended by the workers from across all the local governments of the state, it also saw 47 workers bagging the awards of “Most Efficient Civil Servants/Public Servants”, from across the government Ministries, Agencies and Departments.

The award also attracted cash prizes to promote and encourage efficiency among the government workforce.

The event was also attended by government officials, members of the state executive council, members of the state house of assembly, representatives of the judicial arms, permanent secretaries among others.

At the event which was the last for the Governor Abiola Ajimobi administration saw the Governor bidding the workers farewell while charging them to sustain the tempo and culture of efficiency and effectiveness which his administration has brought into public service.

However, the labour leaders cited many anomalies and maltreatment of the workers as the reasons for directing the workers to ignore the prayer programme.

The letter of the labour leaders reads in parts, “that the tense atmosphere among the workforce in the state where promotion was earned and treacherously withdrawn will not attract workers to honour any prayer programme organised by the state government.

“That where the issue of unpaid 3-18 months arrears of salaries of tertiary institution was not generally addressed will not convince our members to attend such prayer programme.

“That the suffering and anguish of retiree Primary Schools teachers and retired local government employees arising from unpaid arrears of gratuity and pensions will not allow attendance at such prayer programme.

“That the hostile stance of government towards the workers of the state cannot attract our members to the programme.

“Based on the above, labour movement in the state is not interested in the prayer programme and had resolved to boycott the event. Instead, our members have been directed to continue with their daily communion with their creator.”

While addressing the workers, Governor Ajimobi urged them to be diligent, hardworking and efficient, saying such was a factor to attain greater height.

He pointed out that laziness, truancy, misappropriation, disloyalty, negligence have their rewards while hardwork, innovativeness, creativity, diligence, professionalism, dedication enjoys spiritual and material benefits.

Ajimobi said, “My speech this afternoon shall be in two-fold; to appreciate the good people of Oyo State and to bid you all farewell. There is a saying that there is nothing that has a beginning without an end.

“The journey which is gradually coming to an end in the middle of this year started with a bold step on May 29, 2011. In the face of many challenges, ups and downs, we were still able to sail through, courtesy of the wisdom of God as well as perseverance and endurance of the good people of Oyo State.”

The governor said that his administration which remained 135days and 10 hours has successfully delivered on the benefits of democracy in the state, noting that he has also succeeded in changing the attitude of the civil servants which has helped the workers improve tremendously.

Earlier in her welcome remarks, Oyo State Head of Service, Mrs Hannah Ogunesan, appreciated the governor for his unparalleled achievements as governor of the state, saying he has raised the bar of good governance.

Ogunesan challenged workers in the state to ensure they all earn their pays through rededication to service, continuous self-development and commitment to enhanced productivity.

The awards recipients including Miss Modupe Fehintola, a Senior Reporter with the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State(BCOS) and Mrs Ojo Aboyede, a Senior Information Officer, with the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, expressed gratitude to the state government for the award, promising that the honour would spur them to do more.
