Oyo, Osun pay N500m to end LAUTECH crisis

The Oyo and Osun state governments have paid N250 million each to the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) to end the crisis rocking the institution.

The Nation confirmed the development from a very top source in the university yesterday.

The source said: “Yes, both states have paid the amount as promised and the sum is now in the kitty of the university.”

LAUTECH students have been at home for eight months due to the industrial action by all categories of workers in the institution.

The crisis peaked last week when LAUTECH students protested to the Office of the Governor of Oyo State  in Ibadan, the state capital.

While addressing them, the governor promised that owner states would contribute a sum of N250 million each to get back workers to their duty posts and build on it afterwards.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi said the sum would enable the institution pay some salaries and reopen for academic activities before end of this month.

Reacting, the President of the Students’ Union Government of the institution, Olatunde Bakare, commended the two governors, saying it was a way forward.

According to him, the sum, though not up to exactly what is needed to clear salary arrears for two months, would help kick-start the process of implementing the short  term solution to the crisis.

Bakare said once the short term solution is implemented, it would pave the way for the

medium and long term solution the financial problem plaguing LAUTECH. He promised to confirm the payment.

  • Oyo targets N107b IGR in 2017

The Oyo State government plans to generate N107 billion Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the year.

Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Planning Bimbo Adekanmbi said this in an interactive session at the House of Chiefs, Agodi, Ibadan at the weekend.

Adekanmbi said the government was targeting the informal sector to boost its IGR, adding that the monthly projection of N5 billion in last year’s budget had been reduced to N4billion.

He was accompanied by the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Toye Arulogun and other top government officials.

The commissioner said  the informal sector is critical in the actualisation of the N207,671,495,300.00 billion proposed Self-Reliance Budget for the year.

Adekanmbi said the budget evolved from a zero based budgeting approach, which made it mandatory that every item (revenue and expenditure) was only included after strong and thorough justification.

He said the state’s priority  shall be on infrastructure, agriculture, and its entire value chain, commerce, industrialisation, education and health.

Other sectors would also be given necessary attention.

The commissioner lamented that the IGR, which was supposed to be the other mainstay of the state’s income, performed at 20.69 per cent of the total revenue performance of last year’s budget and about 29 per cent of the actual recurrent revenue.

He added that  the government’s efforts at improving the IGR had started with the restructuring and repositioning of the Board of Internal Revenue with the proposal of full autonomy.

Olatubosun maintained that the town hall meeting and empowerment programme were in line with the trend as well as honour the mandate of the office he swore to uphold.

“We are elected based on the trust of our people and we will ensure everything we do will be in their interest, though we need to improve on our communication. If you are doing something and the people didn’t know about what you are doing, it’s tantamount to nothing.

“So it’s paramount to use language that they understand. We are patriotic Nigerians, we want the best for the country and we will not do anything that will add to the sufferings of the people,’’ he said.

  • Oyo APC: Ajimobi a priceless gift

Oyo APC: Ajimobi a priceless gift

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has described Governor Abiola Ajimobi as a priceless gift to the state and Yorubaland.

The party called for support and prayers for the governor “in his insatiable quest to take the state to an enviable height”.

In a statement yesterday by the Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olawale Sadare, to celebrate Ajimobi’s 67th birthday, the party submitted that the governor ranked among the best in terms of managerial acumen, leadership skill and passion for excellence which combine to distinguish ideal leaders from charlatans.

“For a governor who assumed office at a critical period in the life of a state, such as Oyo and turned things round with his popular restoration, transformation and repositioning mantra, coming into office could not have been accidental.

“This apparently accounts for the unprecedented realisation of second term in office and subsequent continuation of his good work across the state.

“The incontrovertible astuteness in Ajimobi is recognised beyond the state as he also leads the Southwest Governors’ Forum.

“We can only pray God to grant our dear leader many more years of sound health and mind to enable him fulfill all his tasks to humanity.”

  • Air Force promises enhanced security for Oyo

Air Force promises enhanced security for Oyo

During a working visit to Oyo State, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshall Sadique Baba Abubakar, visited Governor Abiola Ajimobi. He promised more deployment of airmen to the state for security purposes. Assistant Editor SEUN AKIOYE reports

The meeting between the Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi and the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar began and ended like a meeting between friends. They  laughed, shookhands and made promises of mutual benefits.

It was Air Marshal Abubakar’s first visit to Oyo State where the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has a detachment; and as the governor would put it, the “first CAS to visit Oyo State, even as he called him the “son of the soil.”

The meeting, which held at the Presidential Lodge of the Oyo State government, had all the trappings of warmth and friendliness while the two men appreciated each other and expressed the willingness not only to work together for the development of the state, but also to find mutually acceptable recipes for it.

The Air Chief expressed great appreciation to the governor for the assistance the NAF unit has been receiving from the state government.

“I want to thank the government and the people of Oyo State for all the support we have been getting for our unit here in Ibadan.

“Ibadan, to me, is like a second home. I was here in 2008 at the University of Ibadan after my War College Programme in Abuja. At that time, I used to nurse the ambition to come and settle down fully in Ibadan after I leave the service because the town is peaceful and foodstuffs very cheap. I am still nursing that ambition,” he said.

This was good news to the governor and his several aides who were present at the meeting, as the CAS also promised to help Oyo State in the area of security by strengthening the detachment and deploying more airmen and women.

“We have a detachment here, we want to expand it, and we are looking at the secondary school here too. I have directed the commander that we must do everything possible to make sure that Oyo State is secured because without security, there could be no development.

“Since we have increased the number of people coming into the service, I want to assure you that once the first batch passes out in January, we are going to send more airmen and airwomen to Oyo State,” he further said.

While appreciating Air Marshal Abubakar for the visit, Governor Ajimobi restated that his administration will continue to accord security top priority for development.

“We regard security as the foundation for our development,” he said.  The governor also promised to sign the title deeds to the land acquired by the NAF as soon as possible.

“Regarding the title deeds to your land, I see no problem in signing the documents at all. We will do that,” he assured.

But the Air Chief’s main focus was an inspection tour of the Air Force Comprehensive Secondary School in Lagelu, Ibadan. The school, which was established to cater for the academic well-being of children of the personnel, is fraught with some challenges which the CAS is determined to solve.

As the Air Chief moved from one section of the school to another, he would point out a fault on a building, suggest corrections in a structure or instruct that certain things should be put in place.

The school has challenges concerning electricity, water and classroom infrastructure. The CAS instructed the commander of the unit that everything possible should be done to ensure the challenges are surmounted.

“The kitchen looks nice and neat, but the issue of water is very important. Even if it means drilling another borehole, please just make sure you do it,” he said.

Highpoint of the inspection was a visit to the school’s dining hall where the CAS had lunch with the students.  The CAS insisted on sitting with the children and eating the same food and using the same kind of plates they used. He addressed the students afterwards.

“I am here to find out some of the challenges you are experiencing with regard to electricity, water and so on. I want to assure you that we will address all these challenges so that you can study in an environment conducive to teaching and learning.  But I want you to promise me that you will always put in your best in your academic work, do you promise that?” he asked. There was a resounding yes from the students.

Concerning the visit, the CAS said: “I have not been to Ibadan since I came on board as the Chief of Air Staff because of certain challenges we are trying to address in other parts of the country. But now that we have some breathing space, I decided to come here and see our units here in Ibadan, particularly the secondary school. The commandant and commander of the unit are doing well. We notice a number of challenges and I promised we are going to address them.”

  • Oyo Govt condemns Ibadan violence

•Holds town hall meeting in Saki tomorrow

The Oyo State government has condemned the invasion Kudeti and Isale Asaka areas of Ibadan by hoodlums. It vowed to use the full apparatus of government to deal with any individual who engages in violence that is inimical to the peace in the state.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun said the government had directed relevant security agencies to deal with the hooligans, adding that such acts of thuggery and hooliganism would no longer be condoned.

The government appealed to residents of the affected areas to remain calm and called on security agencies to increase their presence in the areas and other areas too, so as to foretsall a recurrence.

“We assure our people that we value their well-being, lives and property, and we will, at all times, live up to expectations to provide security for them,” the statement said.
